I'm in ottawa Canada I heard the strangest sound coming from a tree , likeca deep croak guttural sound , all the other birds were flipping out , I check it out and spot a black hooded almost looked like a piliiated woodpecker but apparently this is what it was, strange to see it in a tree it was small must have got lost. Thought it was someone's parrot or something . Anyway thanks for the video .

I knew Wood ducks went in trees but until I started keeping ducks, I didn't realize how many others do it.

Why did you pull the feathers off if you wanted to help it?

Keeping them from flying keeps them from hurting themselves flying into the enclosure until they are use to their new surroundings. Pulling some feathers from one wing keeps them from being able to fly for a bit over a month. I sometimes clip feathers that keeps them from being able to fly for about 7 months.

I couldn't find a pair anywhere it took a couple of months. So I got them from separate places. This was the last hen I was able to find anywhere. She had to travel from WA TO CT total opposite ends of the country.

Thanks for the reply. I guess I’ll have to wait until next season. I have a pair now but wanted some more. Best of luck with your pair!

I have clipped wings then they can't fly until they molt which is around 8 months from when I get a duck. Pulling the feathers hurts much less than you think, and the duck can fly in a month. I usually don't do either, but some ducks don't settle down for a while and can hurt or kill themselves flying into the netting. I had a Wood duck that almost died hitting the netting that was in the aviary for a week, I clipped him after that.

They need high protein, so I feed Mazuri duck starter. I also give mealworms.

Now I'm not trying to be rude or anything but wouldn't this be illegal as HOMES are native species

Our ducks are from captive bread ducks from permitted breeders. I have permits to sell them the person I sell to has paperwork to prove they are captive bread and where they got them. The ducks are also marked per federal mandate.

@@the-eu8xp Didn't seem rude to me. That's why there are comments, so people can ask questions. Most people don't know you can have North American waterfowl. As long as they come from a licensed breeder it's all fine. You can't sell birds or eggs without permits.
