- Fishing line is very dangerous and often has fatal consequences for wildlife like ducks, shorebirds and even the mighty merganser. Please join me as I walk along the river and hear a frightened squawk from a small island in the water. Upon investigation, I discover a merganser that has become entangled in a very fine fishing line and had it's neck severely constricted with many coils of tight fishing line as well as its little webbed feet and wings tangled up. I took off my boots, rolled up my pants legs and waded to its rescue. Although it vomited water at one point, upon its release he gave me one mighty squawk in appreciation for my timely help and then disappeared over a small waterfall downriver.

What a happy coincidence that you happened along Chigg. That female merganser is lucky to be alive. We have a lot of mergansers on the rivers near our home and the females have the reddish head. People who leave fishing line behind like that really need a whack up along side the head. Either that or tied up in fishing line so they know how it feels. Of course I am just venting my anger and wouldn't resort to such violence, but it sure pisses me off to see a helpless creature entangled like that. It's bloody thoughtless of someone and no joke. So glad you saved her and just in time too. She couldn't possible catch fish in that condition and would have soon strangled or starved. I'm so delighted you found her, and yes she did know you were trying to help!

I collect my (and others) fishinglines and cans from riversides. It's shame, that people carry stuff and leave junk there..
Same here. It's a shame when you know people have been there and not bothered to pick it up even if it is someone else's. I understand loosing line but at least when you see some around banks and rock everyone should pick it up. I've actually filled a plastic shopping bag one time. I have plenty of stories. One being a man fishing was to worried or grossed out to touch three inch trout (this is a creek in the sierras so no farm fish, although it doesnt matter) so he was stepping on them to remove the hook and kicking them back in of the rock he was fishing from. He was there in remembrance of his father. I couldn't take it after a few so I went and educated him on proper care of trout catch and release which is stressful enough on them already. I think he felt bad because after a few more casts he awkwardly left. Pick up you trash and care for what we have. It's all we have people's.

Fishing line is dangerous for everything. Every year it seems that a number of swimmers drown getting caught up in trash line. Always pickup fishing line if you come across it. Also if your fishing use a section of leader line that is weaker than the main line. If you end up caught up in something and end up needing to snap the line to get free, then you wont run the risk of leaving 50 yards of line just floating out in the water.
Chigg you've got a special place in heaven for how many animals you and your wife help! Thank you for caring!!

So glad you were there to rescue that precious little duck. It will never forget you. My husband and I rescued a baby bird that fell from the nest on a cold night. Took it in, fed it bugs and organic gruel, kept it warm and placed it in it's nest at daylight. For fifteen years all the decedents have flown near to Thank us.
He was shaking his neck a few times and felt it was removed. Dipped his head for quick wash so the healing begins.... Great job Chig... 👍

I once rescued a great horned owl from a soccer net in Castle Rock, CO. I was the only person at the game with leather winter gloves and WOW were they required! The talons on that owl were incredibly sharp and it gripped one of my hands super tight, which left only one hand to work the knife. A couple other guys were helping too and being careful to stay away from the sharp bits. In the end the owl was OK and flew off after he realized he was free. The soccer net, however, died of its wounds.
Beau you're amazing! Thank you so much for taking the time to rescue that poor little guy! I always pick up any fishing line I see! If anyone goes fishing, or you are just out and about and have the means please pick up any loose fishing line you see! It saves lives!

I was a Park Ranger and we all carried nail clippers just for that reason. Fishing line is a big problem for animals. That last piece you took off was wrapped so tight the skin was beginning to grow around it. Thanks for being there.
