1:00 Canon R5/R6 overheating problem was fixed long ago. 2:25 doesn't sound too real. Sony A1 users still await a decent update. Cheaper Alphas have features that A1 doesn't. You could also warn your audience that switching is very costly and differences between systems are not worth that money. Nice video, although it feels like some talking points were suggested by Sony's marketing department 🤣
Hey friend! That’s awesome to hear they have adjusted the overheating concern! I don’t know it seems that Sony is constantly releasing more and more cameras to compete in this space. I’m sure Canon will have some exciting releases soon! This video wasn’t to influence anyone to switch systems. This was an experience based, subjective topic that I felt was warranted considering how heavily I was demonstrating canon cameras within the wedding filmmaking space. Switching systems is very expensive and I even mentioned that Sony isn’t that much less expensive. Thanks for your feedback! Man, do I wish Sonys marketing team was sponsoring. I’ll take some free camera equipment any day haha. Maybe one day ;) Thanks again!

In Canon's defense the R6/R5 was like their first "pro" mirrorless camera and it is still competing with the big boys. When Sony released their mirrorless camera's they didn't get it right till like 5th-6th model. Their very first mirrorless cameras it overheated, was only 8bit and 4k crop and the camera wasn't even full touchscreen. At the end of the day is not about the gear but the artist.. look at Sculpting with Time, they are hands down the best wedding videographer and they have shot with the Canon 1DX II for a long time. I believe they shoot on the R5/R5C and C70 now
Oh 100%! Its never been about the camera. However, because of the modern world we now live in, because we have variety and choices, we can all be a bit more selective and intentional in the tools we choose. I shot with a T3i for 3 years into my wedding business. I think we all reserve the right to experiment with all of these options, make our own calculated decisions based on specs, budget, functionality, reliability, and what will help us create freely with no barriers.
Shooting an r3 r6II combo for hybrid coverage. whilst some of the Sony features (and I previously shot photo on Sony) are very appealing the ease of use of the canons (for me) is the most simple way for me to shoot both.
Totally! Ive been seeing awesome things about both of these cameras for hybrid coverage and I love that! I think Sony's menu system is a bit more in-depth but once you get used to it, it's awesome! The A7IV makes it so easy to switch between photo and video without losing settings or quality.
I love your videos! they are exceptional, your clearly a talented film maker... Disagree with the take on canon moving from EF to RF lenses though... RF is a great improvement and I haven't needed to get rid of any EF lenses they all work great on Canons mirrorless cameras. But to each his own :)
I just subscribed to you channel bro! I've been a Canon user for more than 4 years already. Then the R6 and the A7iv came out. Despite being a diehard Canon fan, I risked it and bought the a7iv instead. It was the best decision in my life! The low light performance is out of this world even at ISO 12,800! The dynamic range is topnotch. And most important thing of all, the ecosystem. I love the fact that there are tons of third party options for the E and FE mounts. While this is also the case for the Canon, you still have to use and EF adaptor just so you can use third party lenses which is pretty outdated for me. You deserve my subscription, brother! Really? Better IBIS and reliability than Canon? Canon IBIS beats everyone, including NIkon. The Sony lens mount is just too small of effective or comparable IBIS to Nikon or Canon. And reliability? Yeah, talk to me about the A7 camera massive class action lawsuit on the premature failing shutters and the Sony "weathersealing".
Hot take I know and very subjective because everyone’s experience is different. While those things are awful that just hasn’t been my experience with the A7Siii and A7IV. The IBIS is debatable, if I had to choose LUMIX has everyone beat with their IBIS.
Whatever you choose - canon has better image and colours finally. That’s true! Your canon footage in comparison with Sony footage is night and day…nice video nice work❤I can totally understand the simplicity of an all around and professional camera as the a7siii.
Same story for me, I recently switched to Sony, the most difficult part are the lenses. You have to sell your lenses at a cheaper price to buy E mount lenses. The adaptors dont work that well. I have a Sigma EF to E adaptor although it works fine with the autofocus but its only limited to Sigma lenses in video. Also you get a high flange distance and due to that I see weird focus shifting on the sides in the image due to that.
Yeah I wish there were such a thing as Universal lenses that work with any camera/any mount and you still benefit from the cameras features. Maybe one day someone much smarter and wealthier will design it lol

If you're a person who almost exclusively shoots video sony is better. You don't need as nice of lens for video, you need a lighter body for long term work, and you get more shooting formats in video that make it dummy proof for post and make this a point and shoot. I think canon is more a purist and technical setup for people who really want to control all aspects of the process rather than having the camera tell them what it should be. Both fine mentalities, but different.
Thanks for this video, Jaired. I plan to buy an R6 Mark II over an FX30+lens (that's my current budget), but why do I feel that I would be messing up so badly? For instance, I shoot 1080p with A Cam EOSR, B Cam T7i, and C Cam XA11 Camcorder. The XA11 is having technical failures, its image is too soft, the colors are dramatically different compared to the other cameras, and my computer struggles to process the clips. The T7i is terrible in low light unless I use a prime lens, has no Kelvin white balance, and my computer also struggles to process the clips. The EOS R has been great but I am getting noisy image from Clog when grading, which I guess is due to the footage being 8-bit and not 10-bit. I also think I am falling behind the wedding industry by not shooting 4K. Also, I want a sharper, brighter, and cleaner image. Only my EOS R can shoot 4K but with a 1.7x crop, bad rolling shutter, and only 30p but I can deal with this. I want to add another 4k camera to use with my EOSR. I only have about an 80k MXN budget (which is around 4k USD), including body, lenses, batteries and SD cards. I considered the FX30 or the R6 II, but while Sony is in overall better than Canon in video, I think I can get more benefits from the R6 II (I already have lenses, full frame, easier to match colors, my wife shoots photo with EOSR and many Canon lenses, so she can benefit from the R6 II when I would not be using it).
Sony is just in a comfortable position by pushing the brand with influencers and also the fact that canon is blocking third party lenses. Otherwise the game could be more exciting. Hope Canon comes back asap.

I actually agree with you on this. Sony looks like it’s more geared toward commercial, corporate, and news media work, while the Canon has a more cinematic look. I always feel like I’m watching a movie or tv show with Canons, and then with Sony I always feel like I’m watching a Super Bowl commercial or documentary. Kind of like watching one of those true crime documentaries. The interviews look like Sony footage and the re-enactments look like Canon footage haha.
Here I am switching from Sony A7siii to Lumix S5ii! I did love my Sonys for a lot of stuff, but there are a few things that the Lumix does than just make life easier on a wedding day (for my way of shooting at least)
@@WaywardNorth It's a great camera for sure - it has its quirks, but they all seem to. I really like the colours, the IBIS is solid, and I find myself shooting a lot in 6k open gate. For a camera with great autofocus, it's also a joy to manually focus with - something I couldn't say about Sony...
Definitely depends on budget but if you aren't budget conscious I would say the A7Siii and A7IV are my top two that I use. The Sony FX30 is also under 2K and is getting a lot of positive buzz. If you were budget conscious, the Sony A7S mark ii can be found used for around $1000 and is still a great 4K option, as well as a B or C cam with the Sony EV-10 that just released.
So good! Love how intentional your approach to gear is. All these cameras are amazing and just tools. You just picked the right tool for you and your artistry 💪🏻
Dudeee exactly! It was a tough decision because I felt committed to Canon and honestly comfortable with their systems. I was so close to the C70/R6 route but decided on pulling a hail mary and going outside my comfort zone. Thanks my friend!!
I think that it’s cool that you found Sony to be a better suit for your workflow, but I don’t think some of your claims are accurate. Sony doesn’t have better IBIS than canon, it’s not more “reliable”, the overheating issues you are pointing out were fixed some time ago. It’s like pointing issues today that Sony fixed on their firmware updates. I currently use an r5, r6, r6mk2, and a Sony a7IV for weddings and I can say that my r6mk2 is much better than the a7IV in a lot of areas for the same price. Better IBIS, much better screen, faster, better menu, better colors in general (that’s subjective), 4k60 no crop, no overheating (my a7IV overheats at 4k30 and 4k60). I’ll admit that the a7IV has better dynamic range, but that’s basically the only thing that’s better than the r6mk2. I love your videos btw, I just also wanted to comment my experience with both brands. Your footage looks great anyways with canon or Sony 😂
fanboying loll, a7iv is 1.5 years old, also you kinda missed autofocus, I think R6ii has versatile autofocus at least while taking pictures. I never had any overheating issues, 4k60 crop is a big downside but they'll come up with A7v and then a year later canon will come up with R6iii, it's a cycle but R6ii and A7iv are here to stay, 3 years later if someone gets this cameras for like sub 1800$, my god it'll be perfect for someone entering a system. the next race will be to introduce stacked sensor in Midrange products. What I'm trying to say is that, this decade is when we stop fanboying and start exploring. Cheers
Traitor! Lol, but on a serious note: i do feel some of your arguments only relate to specific cameras. I rock two R3s and this camera is an absolute beast. It does everything you throw at it. Now saying that, Canon is weak in the RF selection lineup, that is 100% true and Sony are a gr8 product, especially the Fx3. I do feel it is not about what is best, but what suits you, your budget and workflow. For me, changing to Sony means swapping all my lenses. That is not practical for me, no matter what i would have I would make it work. These are all great products, if you can't get a pro look out of these cameras, it is not the gear, it is you. P.S. i shot in Clog.
Thats true, I do mostly reference the R5 and R6 being they were the first mirrorless cameras I incorporated. The R3 and R5C both look incredible. Maybe if I had been more patient I would have stayed and rocked with the R5C and C70 combo but the budget was also a HUGE factor. I could essentially get 2 Sonys for the price of one C70. Add in RF Lenses or adapters and It just wasn't within my means at the time. 100% its never about the camera!
Great job articulating all of that! I’ve definitely been disappointed with my R6 too. I just feels like it could be so much more. C70 on the other hand, my gosh, I love that camera.
The amount of time I hardcore struggled with deciding between the A7Siii and C70 haunts me to this day. I really loved the C70 but it came down to budget being the deciding factor. By the time I invested in the C70 and accessories I could buy two Sonys and it just made more financial sense. :( Still think about it all the time haha
Great video! I switched from the R6 to the R5C, loving it. The R6 still has its fit for B & C cams but the R5C has everything I’ll ever need & more. Sony obviously doing great things as well- like you said you really can’t go wrong!
Nice! I am invested in the R system too much, do also a lot of photography, but I dont like my C70, want to try a Sony. Hoe is swithcing between photo and video with Sony?
The Sony A7IV has been magical in regards to both photo and video and is one of the best hybrids that I have used! Great image quality for both video and photo which so helpful for weddings and youtube.
Why I went canon....Sony electronic company it's digital look confusing menu and overall you use 4k60 it's crop no matter what lens used...output be pointless and rolling shutter warp and overheat possibility not true unlimited sony recording. I fine use rf ef adapter r6 r6mk2 m50mk1 bodies I have now. Only way I switch to sony once they have 4k no crop...maybe future a7v in few years.
Unfortunately sony has very big issue ; The life shutter it's very short. Official sony said they rate it at 200,000 actuations. In practice the shutter is dying after 70.000 times. Let's also not forget that sony hasn't made an update for some time that doesn't have new functions. They are very focused on the new models and sony A7IV users were left behind. The last update was a bad joke from Sony. I am very disappointed with sony.
As a 13+ year Canon user, I originally gravitated towards Canon because of their lenses. Now, that seems to be the primary reason I am thinking of leaving Canon. The inflated cost of RF glass and their almost total refusal to license 3rd parties to use the RF mount is becoming a deal breaker. If I was still shooting weddings, I would 100% be using Sony. For now, photography has become a side business, and I am primarily shooting family portrait sessions. Video is not a necessity for me, and as such, my R5 (and even my tiny gem X100V) satisfies my requirements. Still, I have my eye on Sony.
@@davper8619 I have one. I used it for a short time with my EF lenses, but it's far more cumbersome than you might imagine, especially when you have a collection of EF and RF lenses. Then, the added bulk essentially negates any size reduction you are getting with a mirrorless system.
Coming from the R6 to the A7Siii, that’s just my opinion based on my own personal experience. Seems silly for me to lie about my own experience wouldn’t you agree?
💯 Sony might as well leave ibis out of their cameras and make them cheaper, because you’re gonna need a gimbal for it anyways. It’s okay for photos but it’s like it does nothing for video.
@@WaywardNorth you have a right to your opinion but you can't debate facts. Sony has the worst ibis out of Nikon, Canon, and Panasonic. There are ton of video proof on youtube of that. Plus, I have first hand experience as well with the Nikon, Sony, and Canon Cameras.
@@kifley19 The A7Siii, A7IV, FX3, FX30 have solid IBIS. You can choose between Standard (which, yes, is bit more prone to jitters) but Active Stabilization I haven't had any issues. Maybe I just have a steady hand but I've always been able to get really great stable shots. Im glad you have found better results with those brands thats great! You should definitely use what suits your needs best.
@@novainvicta The low light in wedding receptions, the 30 min record limit during the long Catholic Ceremonies and the over heating during summer is definitely enough for me to switch, and I have the R, R6 and R5 so I will be loosing a lot of money.
Another awesome video, Jaired. I'm currently shooting weddings on a BMPCC4K, but it's hard to ignore the work Sony is doing. Have you ever considered doing a short video on how your approach towards filming elopements/micro-weddings differs to shooting "normal" large scale weddings?
Black Magic has some amazing capabilities. I used the BMPCC4k for a music video shoot one time and was really impressed. Sony does stay on top of it, there's no denying that. Also, totally! I haven't filmed a ton of elopements this year but the process is a bit different than the traditional wedding day. Great topic for sure!
Seriously dude if you cannot film professionally on the Canon R5 and the Canon R6 MKII then there is something wrong with you not the hardware. Having worked at Panavision for 35 years the equipment has got to such a level that you have to be unfit for cinematography to not get great results.
I think you are misinterpreting the message my friend. The Canon R5 and R6 are incredible cameras as stated in this video along with showcasing example footage I captured with these cameras. I have personally, professionally, and commercially used them both. Got wonderful results. At the end of the day these are tools, we all choose which tool we want to help us tell stories.
The S5ii looks incredible. How have you been enjoying it so far?
@@WaywardNorth It's a great camera for sure - it has its quirks, but they all seem to. I really like the colours, the IBIS is solid, and I find myself shooting a lot in 6k open gate.
For a camera with great autofocus, it's also a joy to manually focus with - something I couldn't say about Sony...
No for me, I don't like yellow tones
As a starter for filming wedding what sony camera would you recommend? As of now I have a sony a7II.
@@WaywardNorth Awesome! Thank you!
@@WaywardNorth for sure! The C70 is definitely not a cheap camera 😂
Your wedding footage looks stunning. Which mist filter are you using on your outside shots?
Thanks so much friend! I am using the Tiffen 1/8 black pro mist filter!
Philip White is unique, he's using leica for videos but his work is one of the best
Great video! I switched from the R6 to the R5C, loving it. The R6 still has its fit for B & C cams but the R5C has everything I’ll ever need & more. Sony obviously doing great things as well- like you said you really can’t go wrong!
Yeah the R5C is a powerhouse! I have used it a few times and its such a cool camera!
@@WaywardNorth definitely a little overkill for weddings, but I like it for sure
There is an adapter
@@davper8619 I have one. I used it for a short time with my EF lenses, but it's far more cumbersome than you might imagine, especially when you have a collection of EF and RF lenses. Then, the added bulk essentially negates any size reduction you are getting with a mirrorless system.
@@occipitalexposure5059 yeah I could image back and forth is probably exhausting
i switch back to canon colors are just to good especially in skin tones and canon glasses are way sharper then sony glass
im in love with my C70 + FX3 Combo :)
Thats a sweet combo right there!!!
Sony does not have better ibis. That's a lie.
I am thinking about switching as well.
A lot of thought and prayer went into my decision for sure because I love Canon and always will! Worth it to experiment!
Will that improve your photography / cinematography. Equipment is just a tool only as good as the person using it.
In Finland Canon R5 + RF 24-70 f2.8 kit is 4400€ today and A7s3 is 4500€ body only. 😱 Am I switching back to Canon? Not 🤔
R5 is so close to be perfect hybrid! But no 3rd party lenses and bad shadows in video is too big cripple for me.
Yes if use ef efs rf adapter for now and maybe buy several for 3-4 common zoom lenses used ....16-35 24-70 70-200 and 150-600 sigma
Waiting for the next episode: why I left Sony for Nikon 😅
Hahaha 😝 stay tuned
Why I Left Pizza For Burger
I have left my r5 to sony as well! haha!!
Welcome to the abandoned ship club!
Dunno why ppl make this kind of video 🙄
Meh
I apologize if this video caused any distaste for you, it was merely a transparent discussion on my own personal experiences and choices as a wedding filmmaker. All the best!
