Having researched many more complicated and traditional ways of providing backup power for my sump pump, I decided to actually give this -- the simplest option -- a try. And it worked! My pump is a Liberty model 247. Only 1/4 HP. Listed as 6 amps, no idea what the starting draw is. Additionally I use the HydroCheck Hi-Lo pump controller switch. Fyi this allows you to set the exact on and off points for your pump, so it runs longer cycles, less frequently. This is better for your pump. Additionally it eliminates the possibility of float switch failure. Anyway, the pump plugs into the hi lo controller, and then I plugged that into the EcoFlow River Pro, via a heavy gauge extension cord. The hi lo controller sensors themselves draw virtually no power. The output was listed at 0 watts. These days, my pump cycles once every 90 minutes or so, and I have the sensors set to run it at 18 seconds per cycle. Sure enough, at the 90 minute mark, the pump kicked on and the EcoFlow did its thing. The fan kicked on immediately due to the startup draw I assume, and the pump cycled normally. After the cycle, the power remaining on the RiverPro dropped from 100% to 99%. For those who don't want to go the generator route, or the deep cycle marine battery and inverter route, or the water powered backup pump route, I recommend this extremely simple and apparently solid option. Caveats: this battery is brand new. A few years from now it may not be as robust. Also: this is not a set and forget option. You can't simply plug your pump into this, and this into the wall, and forget about it. If you try to do that, when the power goes out, the RiverPro will indeed take over which is great BUT when the power comes back on and/or the battery drains (regardless of which comes first) the RiverPro will NOT hand power back over to the grid. Your pump will be dead until you physically plug it back into the wall. So, if you choose to go this way, you'll need to be physically present in a power outage to plug your pump into the RiverPro, or have a friend with keys to your place who will come over and do that for you.
Look into basement warchdog kits. Mine has never failed me. Can run for a week without power. 3 days on really heavy rain days. And the backup pump sits very low so almost completely empties my basin and the float sits higher than my main so if the main fails, this kicks in. Years of service with no issues besides every 5 or more years you have to get a new battery, but you can extend that by proper maintainamce of the battery. My current one is at the 6.5 year mark. Ive only had to go through 3 days without power but it did just fine and battery wasnt even close to dead when power returned. And when my main failed once for I don't know how long the unit screamed at me that the main pump failed. Sure enough it did. Must have been over a day by the time I got the alarm and figured it out. Another day to get and install new pump. Again zero issues.
Thank you for showing this solution for sump pump back up power. The illustrated calculations allowed me to fill in the values specific to my situation and spec in an appropriate battery system. Keep the pump pumping!
After watching this video, I decided to try this out to power my new Zoeller M98 sump pump. The Ecoflow is a nice unit, but the M98 is not the right match. I just finished spending the day mopping up my basement because my pump didn't come on after a big rain storm. After talking to support at Ecoflow, we found that the M98 sends a strong electrical surge when coming on that kicks the battery circuit breaker. You really need a larger battery with this unit.
I already watched the vid on the M98 pump and I'm getting ready to install it. And just happened to wonder how to battery operate it. Well here it is. Thanks for this one!!
You have answered every question i had. Since we aren’t always home and we do sleep at night, i want thru power-charge and plug at the same time. Power went out last December during a snowstorm and the pump was working hard because the water table was high. We had a flood. Wrecked the finished part of the basement. This year, its November and the sump pit is dry. Im doing my research now to avoid damage to the new basement room.
Look up basement watchdog kits. I've had mine for years. You can even get them now all together with a main pump and a backup pump. Mines older and just the backup pump, controller and yacht battery. Mine will run for almost a week without power. Less if it's rainy season but at least 3 days.
Great video, thanks you for sharing. Lots of good information about factors to consider with these portable power packs. My HOA doesn't allow true generators, so this is the only kind of thing that I'd be able to use, and my highest priority would be keeping that sump pump going.
Great information and test, thanks! It's nice to know this unit can act as a UPS, and if there is power it will act as a passive pass thru without using the battery. I do worry about my use case a bit, as we get a ton of runoff from the hill behind us, and during heavy rains, the sump is coming on every minute or so. It is expensive, but seems to have excellent features.

For a backup, the only question is if it is reliable over a long period of time (I realize the batteries need replacing after several years, depending on effective number cycles, etc.)... Having a second pump is also a form of 'backup' -- in case of a pump failure (it's safer to fly on a plane with two engines than one engine)... Whatever the system used, aren't there many points of potential failures? Redundancy of various elements seems to be the key (redundant power (batteries or generator), redundant pumps, redundant 'floats'...).... Very good channel by the way!

The video is an interesting alternative to traditional sump pump backup solutions. Please demonstrate the UPS backup function of the unit if the Ecoflow River Pro is plugged directly into the AC outlet and the sump pump is plugged directly into one of the Ecoflow River Pro AC inputs. Will the sump pump run if the power fails? I realize that there is a 30ms delay. You can test it by shutting off your breaker switch to the sump pump outlet. Thank you.

Or maybe it doesn't need to because the grid will start supplying power to the EcoFlow which will be continually charged and will also continue providing power to the sump pump? This was an excellent video ! Well done! I have a Ecoflow river pro. I have a dual sump pump arrangement the battery backup being a Zoeller 508 fit and I estimate it will run 2 days. We had a 500 year + rain event this year and I was shocked to find both my primary pump and my back up pump had to run at the same time. I panicked because if there was a power outage it was clear the backup would not be able to handle the record water coming into the pit. At the time I was thinking if an outage occurred I could plug my River Pro into my primary - and you have confirmed this. Thank you. One thing to note for selection of your primary pump - Zoellers are work horses but they are not as efficient as sumps from other quality companies like Liberty, Ion, and Pro Series pumps which use split capacitor motors. Less amps/watts means more run time if you use the RIverPro.
I'm thinking my next car will definitely be a hybrid of some sort. Not only do I like the idea of stealth camping to save on hotel rooms, but I also like the idea of having an efficient quiet gas generator for emergency power outages. If my power went out during the rainy season for a long I would be screwed.
I just bought the eco flow max and just unboxed it an hour before watching the video which couldn’t be better timed and helpful. Thanks for the calculations. I’m going to create a spreadsheet to plug in different device parameters. The only possible drawback to this model of the eco flow is the use of NCM batteries vs lithium. But I am not sure how big a deal that is. The top end eco flow uses lithium phosphate batteries and I’m not sure I want to spend that amount pretty expensive. Thanks for the video!!
I had a big rain storm last night. My sump pump had to run 5 1/2 times more than yours in an hour. That’s something people here need to keep in mind is you need to account for worst case scenarios because that’s when your power will go out and when you will need it most in an emergency. In this scenario your battery would have only lasted a little over 4 hours before my basement flooded. I know every area is different and water of those amounts is not typical but my point is we need to prepare for the worst scenarios. Some people in this area lost their power for days so you would need a much much bigger battery than this
Oh another update is most people in this area that lost power lost it for 2-3 days. Some lost it for 9 days but you’d want at least 2 days worth of power for it which means you’d need something with 12 times more battery space to last 2 days only for a sump pump. Time to invest in an expandable eco flow system or something even bigger
Im gonna guess that you’re in the bay area or CA. I am also debating getting this since the last couple storms recently. I have 1 1hp and 1 1/2hp pump that i need to run. Hoping this would work.
I recently replaced my old 1/3hp sump pumps for one 1/2hp and one 1/3 hp sump pumps (Zoeller). During heavy non stop rain lasting more then a day (happens a few times during spring and summer) my m98 pump will run up to 4 cycles per minute. That’s due to a low spot on one side of my home. It’s bad. Not sure if I should probably spend more on bigger generator just in case. I do have a natural gas generac whole house generator but if that fails then I’m screwed.
During massive rains where I live, my sump pump will fire off about every 3 minutes. I’ve been looking for something that will let me sleep and then fire up my generator in the morning if need be. My big concern is not being home in a power outage. Has anyone found a way to use it as a UPS for sump pump? I watched a great video showing a marine grade battery backup from This Old House, and it seemed to only give a few hours and also required a 12v pump to be installed. Nicely done. So logical and very easy to understand. I've always thought inductive load (e.g. a motor) vs resistive loads makes a significant difference in power consumption calculations.. Guess not ! ... Curious since today is 2+ years later, how has this solution held up ? How often do you need to use the Ecoflow.. My concern with these is the longevity of the batteries and how well it retain charge over time.
Nice video and calculations were helpful. However, sump pumps always need a permanent battery backup because people aren't always around ( or awake) when the power goes out. A battery backup system also requires an automatic power transfer switch to go back and forth between battery and utility power. The battery also requires the continuous presence of a battery charger connected to the utility side so the battery can automatically be recharged when power returns. Without a complete system install, plan on mopping out the basement. If you're using the battery as a tool for other purposes, you're just shortening the life of the battery and defeating it's longevity of use as a power backup to the pump.

I was wondering if a portable power station in the River Pro’s price range, would actually start and run a sump pump like the Zoeller M98, now I know! Our pump is the Zoeller M53. It has a bit more amperage requirement at 4.8 to 9.7 vs the M98 at 4.7 to 9.4. Whether an increased power delta of 0.1 and 0.3 would make a difference, I would only be WAG’ing. Having this sort of power outage back-up would be great. Obviously though, if the pump fails (rather than a power failure), zero A/C power is the least of one's problems. Our water in-flow needs weren't high, so we went with a water powered pump (the Liberty SJ10) for back-up purposes. There are several other brands to choose, including Zoeller and Base Pump. However, having a portable power station would be handy for not only a sump pump, but for other purposes. BTW, the River Pro has a new Pro 2 offering. It is similarly priced, but has a different (supposedly better) battery (LFP ) technology, with a longer warranty period from 3 to 5-years. I do wonder if the new River Pro 2's output and inverter would handle the start-up and run demands of the referenced Zoeller M98 pump as well as its previous sibling?
How did you make out I'm getting a system installed with a Zoller 53 next month, i have a 2000 watt 4500 surge sola generator end was hoping this would take care of my needs. I did comment above before iI seen this, so the pumps do not continuously run run I figured on 2 hrs if that? My math so far I could find the average amp draw is 9.6amp at 110volts so that's 1056 watts average run time. The start-up amperage is 25.9amp at 110 volts that 2849 watts max draw.
That pump will draw that 9.4 amps. I test them all the time. There are other brands that only use 4 amps try one of those. Ion wc33i or some pro series pumps.

This will not work as a ups. Your pump draws more than 600watts and the eco flow ups function will not work. I noticed there is no video of you demonstrating the ups function.
Well the river pro plugged on the main house grid and the sump pump plugged on the River Pro, while there's power in the grid it won't use the battery power but once that grid power goes offline the sump pump will be using the River Pro battery, yes its not fully Uninterrupted because it'll have very few milliseconds for this to start which in sump pump i don't think it'd matter much.
With X-Boost turned on EcoFlow states it can run appliances up to 1800 watts. The only downside it's the voltage drops significantly so sensitive electronics wouldn't work but I don't think it would hurt this pump.
@@desupernoodle It can run the pump under normal conditions but the manual says the UPS function over 600 watts will not work so if a power failure happens the pump won’t come on.
what about adding a secondary sub pump in the basin, such as you had in the original? I'd be more concerned about having a primary pump failure than I would a power outage
Anyone else in a similar situation? My sump pumps (Zoeller 1/2hp) cycle on 2-3 times per minute during heavy non stop rain lasting more then a day. (I have a negative slope in my yard so French drains do not work in my situation) I do have a generac whole house generator but I was also looking into the delta max 2000. Planning on using it for camping trips and if one day my generac doesn’t kick on at least I’l have another back up system to keep the sump pumps running a few hours…
Yes mine runs like that, PLUS I have to run 2-3 submersible pumps to bring water that runs in from the other side of the basement down to the sump pump!
The associated article mentions UPS mode didn't work for you as your sump pump's startup wattage was too high for the power station. I'm assuming that if you used a higher wattage power station that can handle the startup power surge, the UPS mode should work?
Also the back up pump is usually a smaller and weaker pump. Whereas with this it’s using the main pump. Obviously it all depends on your needs. Some situations will be fine with a smaller back up. Others may need the power of the main pump.

Yes, you could keep it running for days with solar. With that said for the price I would step up to the Delta 2. That unit has more battery capacity, power output, solar input, and you might be able to run your refrigerator and sump. You can usually find the Delta 2 on sale for around $700 amzn.to/3wSCM8h
Hi, if you want the battery to last even longer, I recommend using HydroCheck Sensors V2 to override your float. I did this with my Liberty 257 (with KMF switch) and now my pump starts once every 25 minutes in rainy condition, instead of once every 5-7 min. In the winter, I am now at 4 hours interval! I configured my setup to let the water go higher in my pit, but the pump then starts less often but runs a bit longer. It means more running amps vs surge amps.
Hey, Thx for your detailed presentation. I did hook up my Ecoflow River pro to the sump pump. It worked great with the AC power and also with battery alone. There was a power outage for a second or two and was curious and went to basement and saw water puddle. I think AC switch did not turn back on when the power came back on. Is there any settings that need to be done?
Great video. I'm surprised since the Zoeller M98 has a starting AMP of 29.2, and I was expecting you will need 3504 watts boost. Though, I see your reply to D. Hall, which may explain the Zoeller needs larger unit.
I found out the hard way that this unit is not powerful enough to handle the M98. When the M98 kicks on, it sends a surge to the battery that kicks the battery's circuit breaker. You defiantly need a larger unit.
So for the same price or probably less as the power bank, why not put in a basement watchdog system? Mine is just the backup pump, controller and big yacht battery. Can usually get about a week of running of runs normally. I have never lost power that long. And always keeps batter topped up when you have power.
Because your system has one use and one use only - as a basement watchdog system. The EcoFlow has multiple use case scenarios both at home and on the road!
Does the app have a notification function to let you know when it is experiencing high draws (example power goes out and it has to run your sump pump)?
I read that this is NOT a good UPS system, because if the battery empties, then the house power comes back on, the battery's outlets must be re-activated manually, so the pump would remain OFF, though the house has power.
It's still great considering it gives you time when the power goes indeed to off. Much better than having no back up at all. I rather have this. Would give me a solid day to react with a real generator if required.

In other words, you go on vacation, the power goes out, this thing will kick in, and keep that water flowing... 10:40 can you confirm that this works automatically?
Great video. I have become super paranoid about sump pump failure scenarios. Essentially there are two points of failure: the pump itself and/or the power fails. I would like to be able to swap in a backup pump in an emergency in the event it fails, but not run two simultaneously, i.e. a quick manual swap. Is there a best practice for this in terms of setting up the pipes so I can easily swap in another unit? My setup now is all PVC top to bottom with no easily removeable sections.
Sounds like a transfer pump would fit your purpose: connect garden hose pipes to input & output ends, and then in an emergency, just put the input hose in the sump pit, turn on the transfer pump, and discharge water from the output end (either to your discharge pipe or stick it out of the window. This should be way easier than swapping a sump pump in an emergency
@@tonywu9517 When you use the term "transfer pump", is that similar to a submersible pump? I was thinking of doing as you've just suggested using a submersible situated on the floor just above the sump pit.
EcoFlo just told me their River Pro will not power properly a Zoeller 0.3 h.p. ( M53) 1035w, and you have the stronger .5 HP. (M98). "OVERLOAD" condition trips most of the time. Am sending two River Pros back to Eco Flow.
I just bought a Delta 2 which you can find for $800 and that outputs 1800W(instead of the 600W the river can do) while being used as a EPS (Emergency Power supply) which is what I'm planning on doing. Hope it works.
Have watched a lot of your videos and appreciate your work. However, this video isn't adding up. The Zoeller M98 you mention and show in a previous video doesn't match the specs listed. The M98 uses 9.4 running amps & 29.2 starting amps, which equates to 1128 running watts and 3504 starting watts. The specs you listed on this video (4.7 min/running & 9.4 max/starting) seems to match up with a Zoeller M264 Sewerage pump. If you ran the M98 using the Ecoflow River Pro (or even River 2 Pro), the circuit breaker would trip on startup. Can you confirm what you used?
Did you do something to the plug of the sump pump? My sump pump plug is 3 prong and the AC input plugs on my EcoFlow have only 2 prongs so when I plugged it in it doesn't even register power
What about making your sump pump quieter? My sump pump is right under our bedroom. It wakes me up so many times! Is it possible to have the pipes too well secured. I noticed your pipes shake a little when the pump cycles. My pipe doesn’t shake at all. Maybe the sound is resonating through the floor joists? Sorry, I got off topic there. I have a battery backup pump because we leave our house unattended for long periods. I’m more concerned about the pump failing rather than a power failure. I also have a camera on it so I can monitor the sump. I had to call my son once when the sump pump actually got stuck on and kept running.

I have a system being installed with a Zoler lr 53 pump. I have a similar solar with ups but rated to 2000 watts and 4500 surge. I guess I don't understand how the pump actually works or kicks on or my math is really off. I thought I only really had a max almost 2hrs if that , so they do not continuously run? Basically my Math based off the conversion for wattage alone I could find the average amp draw is 9.6amp at 110volts so that's 1056 watts average run time. Did you ever figure this out? I had incorrectly purchased weaker River 2 Max w/ 1000W max output so I decided to reach out to the manufacturer of my pump and the numbers they gave me worried me! The "inrush current" for a pump, is around 4x the nameplate amps. The pump you have there, uses a few different motor vendors. So please verify the Amps on the model tag for your pump. I believe the highest amps, of our vendors is 13 Amps. The inrush current would be approximately 52 Amps. If you are looking for watts, Amps x Volts = Watts. So 52 x 115 = approximately 5980 watts at startup.
I Used mine the other day when the power went out and it kept saying overload on the echo flow unit. the pump I have is a Zoller 1/2 horsepower it says 9.4 Amp on the pump. What’s the issue? I bought this because you sold me on it. 8’ to discharge.
Hi Rodney...received a 2200 watt inverter from Giandel yesterday. Hooked it up to provide backup power for my Zoeller pump 1/3 hp which is rated at 6.8 amps. I also got an overload reading. Tech support said they thought the initial surge on the pump may be much higher than the 6.8 amps stamped on the sump pump label. They said I may need a much larger inverter...perhaps as big as 4000 watts. The unit you bought is rated at a max of 1200 watts.
How do you run this permanently attached so it acts as a ups backup in a power outage, then returns to normal power after the outage is over, without manual changes?
The thing that you can't determine is how many years will this power unit last compared to a to a acid battery package. Last in years and years. Not in one pump cycle.
Does this unit have the "automatic restart" feature? Meaning that it will switch from battery power back to permanent power once the electricity is restored? Or do you need to be home and manually press a button to do this reset?
I have the older Delta Mini (882wh), and that is exactly why I bought it. My power [normally] only goes off for less than an hour, but at times it has been longer. I just wanted something to run the sump pump long enough for me to assess the outage and then get the generator up and running if need be. My pump (1/3 hp Ridgid) pulls like 495 watts when pumping. The Delta Mini can easily handle that draw for hours...kicking on and off, obviously. Plus, being honest, as a Senior, the Mini was the largest one that was still within my capabilities to carry around, lol. Its only 23 pounds.
Watched this a few times when we purchased our first home with a sump pump. Currently referring to it as we have no power in NoVA. There's a great deal for the 256kh on Amazon but don't know if it would be powerful enough for a 1/4 HP sump pump. Any ideas??
I've tried this in a EPS setup (power cord connected). The problem I've experienced is that after the pump works for a cycles in minutes, the AC outlet on the battery would automatically shut off (a terrible scenario). Do you have similar experience, and do you know why? I read somewhere that X-boost do not work when battery is being charged. I also used an extension cord to charge the battery continuously. Could either of these be the reason?
I just want to verify. You mentioned that If I connected sump pump to the battery which connecting to an outlet, then, endlessly sump pump would run unless the power outage continues. In this connection, the battery is automatically charged without overcharged as well. Is it true?
$650 for 720 Wh (6 Ah @ 120 VAC) for a dedicated, stationary use does not seem like a good value to me when you can buy a 1200 Wh (100 Ah @ 12 VDC) battery and a combined controller/ inverter/ charger for $450. It seems more reasonable for someone who values the portability, but that seems irrelevant when used for a sump pump back-up.
You can't get 100% of the rated capacity from the battery. For calculations, estimate that you can get 80% of the stated capacity and you'll be much closer. Some are higher, some are lower.
So the batteries capacity is 720Wh, the AC load is 564W, but for the inverter to produce 564W of AC output, the input power will be higher due to inverter conversion loss, so 564W/0.85 = 663W draw from batteries (most inverter has eff. of 85 ~ 90%), plus when the inverter is on but no load is running, I.E. the pump not running, the inverter will still drain the batteries so you have to factor all that to get closer run time. I have Bluetti EB70, the standby current draw is about 15W when inverter is on but the AC load is not on. I wonder what the standby power draw of the inverter (inverter is on but no AC load) of Ecoflow, did you try leaving the inverter on with no load to see how long it takes to drain down the batteries with ECO mode off.

seems the 1/3 hp model has almost the same specs regarding amps and volts so would I be OK running that model with, rather than a power station, a separate inverter rated for 1500 watts coupled with a 50 amp hour lithium battery. Cost of those 2 items roughly 300$ but not sure as to the inverter running with a lithium type battery as some of the inverters imply they'll only work with lead and acid. What do you think ? Finally got to test my system yesterday late July, we had a very dry spring in Chicago suburbs. Anyway it worked great , ran it for 2 hours and the battery a 50AH lithium never flinched as the converter showed the same voltage after the 2 hours of pumping 13.2 prior and 13.2 after. The water pump I was using is only ,as recall 350 watts but it seemed to be plenty powerful enough as it was pumping about every 4 minutes about estimate of 8 gallons up about 5 feet. Cost of battery and converter $260 pump was $50. Our HOA does not allow gas generators
With solar generators, they shut down if there is no power draw. So you have to physically turn on to run your sump pump, you just can't leave the sump pump plugged in to the solar generator and expect to come on when it rains. The solar generator would have to be already powered on. I wonder if you kept a low power draw device (like a small fan) plugged in to the solar generator along with the sump pump. If you keep the fan running, the solar generator would already be powered up if sump pump was needed.

Great video. Question I have 2 sump pumps one is 3/10 HP and the other 1/2 HP I have a Ryoby 1800 inverter but when e got 3” in an hour it did not last 20 min with 4 40 watt batteries. But It will not run off 120 volt. the one you showed is nice but like you said pricy would a Ace cyber power 1500 VA run my 1/2 hp pump you think?
did you watch the ace hardware you tube video on that unit ? I too am thinking of getting that product as have a .3 hp pump but noted it had 2 9AH lead type batteries that need replacement after only 2 years. Thde replacing video is on you tube and is somewhat of a hassle
Just curious how to see if this is still running well. Looking to do something similar but called ecoflow and they said the river could not run my sump pump despite it being a Zoeller as well, not sure if they were trying to upsale me to the delta model or not.
Worked well but using it as a UPS and just keeping it plugged in to the wall and then the sump pump plugged into the Ecoflow did not work. In this configurations the Ecoflow was not able to use the XBoost mode which is actually critical for the Ecoflow to run the sump. So UPS not going to work but if the power goes out and I am home I will be able to depend on the Ecoflow to run the Sump Pump and hopefully avoid a tough situation.

@@mcsisawesome No it does not. Further, the river unit in this video will not run as a UPS( more accurately an EPS ((Emergency Power supply)). When plugged in to AC the wattage booster does not work so the sump pump will not work. I just bought the Ecoflow Delta 2 which can easily be found at $800 and that can do 1800w while plugged into AC so I'm hoping/ assuming that will work. The auto transfer switch would be used more for the Delta pro where it can handle a larger portion of your home(at least that is my understanding being fairly new to this stuff).
I does, but be careful to know how much power your sump pump pulls. The XBoost feature which I needed to use on this video does not work in the UPS setting. The next River 2 Pro would do it for me compared to this older version (seen on this video). You could also look at the Delta 2 amzn.to/3YTQodr. That would easily do it, more capacity, and looks like Amazon has a $200 coupon right now 👍 Best of luck.
Having researched many more complicated and traditional ways of providing backup power for my sump pump, I decided to actually give this -- the simplest option -- a try. And it worked!
My pump is a Liberty model 247. Only 1/4 HP. Listed as 6 amps, no idea what the starting draw is.
Additionally I use the HydroCheck Hi-Lo pump controller switch. Fyi this allows you to set the exact on and off points for your pump, so it runs longer cycles, less frequently. This is better for your pump. Additionally it eliminates the possibility of float switch failure.
Anyway, the pump plugs into the hi lo controller, and then I plugged that into the EcoFlow River Pro, via a heavy gauge extension cord.
The hi lo controller sensors themselves draw virtually no power. The output was listed at 0 watts.
These days, my pump cycles once every 90 minutes or so, and I have the sensors set to run it at 18 seconds per cycle.
Sure enough, at the 90 minute mark, the pump kicked on and the EcoFlow did its thing. The fan kicked on immediately due to the startup draw I assume, and the pump cycled normally.
After the cycle, the power remaining on the RiverPro dropped from 100% to 99%.
For those who don't want to go the generator route, or the deep cycle marine battery and inverter route, or the water powered backup pump route, I recommend this extremely simple and apparently solid option.
Caveats: this battery is brand new. A few years from now it may not be as robust.
Also: this is not a set and forget option. You can't simply plug your pump into this, and this into the wall, and forget about it. If you try to do that, when the power goes out, the RiverPro will indeed take over which is great BUT when the power comes back on and/or the battery drains (regardless of which comes first) the RiverPro will NOT hand power back over to the grid. Your pump will be dead until you physically plug it back into the wall. So, if you choose to go this way, you'll need to be physically present in a power outage to plug your pump into the RiverPro, or have a friend with keys to your place who will come over and do that for you.
Look into basement warchdog kits. Mine has never failed me. Can run for a week without power. 3 days on really heavy rain days. And the backup pump sits very low so almost completely empties my basin and the float sits higher than my main so if the main fails, this kicks in. Years of service with no issues besides every 5 or more years you have to get a new battery, but you can extend that by proper maintainamce of the battery. My current one is at the 6.5 year mark.
Ive only had to go through 3 days without power but it did just fine and battery wasnt even close to dead when power returned.
And when my main failed once for I don't know how long the unit screamed at me that the main pump failed. Sure enough it did. Must have been over a day by the time I got the alarm and figured it out. Another day to get and install new pump. Again zero issues.
This model when used as an uninterrupted power supply times itself out at 12 hrs. And shuts the a/c output off. owners manual p.3 note 9.

After watching this video, I decided to try this out to power my new Zoeller M98 sump pump. The Ecoflow is a nice unit, but the M98 is not the right match. I just finished spending the day mopping up my basement because my pump didn't come on after a big rain storm. After talking to support at Ecoflow, we found that the M98 sends a strong electrical surge when coming on that kicks the battery circuit breaker. You really need a larger battery with this unit.
I already watched the vid on the M98 pump and I'm getting ready to install it. And just happened to wonder how to battery operate it. Well here it is. Thanks for this one!!
You have answered every question i had. Since we aren’t always home and we do sleep at night, i want thru power-charge and plug at the same time. Power went out last December during a snowstorm and the pump was working hard because the water table was high. We had a flood. Wrecked the finished part of the basement. This year, its November and the sump pit is dry. Im doing my research now to avoid damage to the new basement room.

I've had mine for years. You can even get them now all together with a main pump and a backup pump. Mines older and just the backup pump, controller and yacht battery. Mine will run for almost a week without power. Less if it's rainy season but at least 3 days.
Great video, thanks you for sharing. Lots of good information about factors to consider with these portable power packs. My HOA doesn't allow true generators, so this is the only kind of thing that I'd be able to use, and my highest priority would be keeping that sump pump going.

I do worry about my use case a bit, as we get a ton of runoff from the hill behind us, and during heavy rains, the sump is coming on every minute or so. For a backup, the only question is if it is reliable over a long period of time (I realize the batteries need replacing after several years, depending on effective number cycles, etc.)... Having a second pump is also a form of 'backup' -- in case of a pump failure (it's safer to fly on a plane with two engines than one engine)... Whatever the system used, aren't there many points of potential failures? Redundancy of various elements seems to be the key (redundant power (batteries or generator), redundant pumps, redundant 'floats'...).... Very good channel by the way!

The video is an interesting alternative to traditional sump pump backup solutions. Please demonstrate the UPS backup function of the unit if the Ecoflow River Pro is plugged directly into the AC outlet and the sump pump is plugged directly into one of the Ecoflow River Pro AC inputs. Will the sump pump run if the power fails? I realize that there is a 30ms delay. You can test it by shutting off your breaker switch to the sump pump outlet. Thank you.

This was an excellent video ! Well done! I have a Ecoflow river pro. I have a dual sump pump arrangement the battery backup being a Zoeller 508 fit and I estimate it will run 2 days. We had a 500 year + rain event this year and I was shocked to find both my primary pump and my back up pump had to run at the same time. I panicked because if there was a power outage it was clear the backup would not be able to handle the record water coming into the pit. At the time I was thinking if an outage occurred I could plug my River Pro into my primary - and you have confirmed this. Thank you. One thing to note for selection of your primary pump - Zoellers are work horses but they are not as efficient as sumps from other quality companies like Liberty, Ion, and Pro Series pumps which use split capacitor motors. Less amps/watts means more run time if you use the RIverPro.

I'm thinking my next car will definitely be a hybrid of some sort. Not only do I like the idea of stealth camping to save on hotel rooms, but I also like the idea of having an efficient quiet gas generator for emergency power outages. If my power went out during the rainy season for a long I would be screwed.
That is a real decent run time for your sump pump. Will give you some time to figure out what to do if the power is out for longer.

I just bought the eco flow max and just unboxed it an hour before watching the video which couldn’t be better timed and helpful. Thanks for the calculations. I’m going to create a spreadsheet to plug in different device parameters. The only possible drawback to this model of the eco flow is the use of NCM batteries vs lithium. But I am not sure how big a deal that is. The top end eco flow uses lithium phosphate batteries and I’m not sure I want to spend that amount pretty expensive. Thanks for the video!!

Great video. I was looking at getting the Delta Max but seems like it will be overkill and I can consider the River Pro.
I had a big rain storm last night. My sump pump had to run 5 1/2 times more than yours in an hour. That’s something people here need to keep in mind is you need to account for worst case scenarios because that’s when your power will go out and when you will need it most in an emergency. In this scenario your battery would have only lasted a little over 4 hours before my basement flooded. I know every area is different and water of those amounts is not typical but my point is we need to prepare for the worst scenarios. Some people in this area lost their power for days so you would need a much much bigger battery than this
Oh another update is most people in this area that lost power lost it for 2-3 days. Some lost it for 9 days but you’d want at least 2 days worth of power for it which means you’d need something with 12 times more battery space to last 2 days only for a sump pump. Time to invest in an expandable eco flow system or something even bigger
For a long term solution, I've added a Predator 2200 generator to charge the Ecoflow. Which it'll do 80% in about 1 hour.
Im gonna guess that you’re in the bay area or CA. I am also debating getting this since the last couple storms recently. I have 1 1hp and 1 1/2hp pump that i need to run. Hoping this would work.
I recently replaced my old 1/3hp sump pumps for one 1/2hp and one 1/3 hp sump pumps (Zoeller). During heavy non stop rain lasting more then a day (happens a few times during spring and summer) my m98 pump will run up to 4 cycles per minute. That’s due to a low spot on one side of my home. It’s bad. Not sure if I should probably spend more on bigger generator just in case. I do have a natural gas generac whole house generator but if that fails then I’m screwed.

During massive rains where I live, my sump pump will fire off about every 3 minutes. I’ve been looking for something that will let me sleep and then fire up my generator in the morning if need be. Nicely done. So logical and very easy to understand. I've always thought inductive load (e.g. a motor) vs resistive loads makes a significant difference in power consumption calculations.. Guess not ! ... Curious since today is 2+ years later, how has this solution held up ? How often do you need to use the Ecoflow.. My concern with these is the longevity of the batteries and how well it retain charge over time.
Nice video and calculations were helpful. However, sump pumps always need a permanent battery backup because people aren't always around ( or awake) when the power goes out. A battery backup system also requires an automatic power transfer switch to go back and forth between battery and utility power. The battery also requires the continuous presence of a battery charger connected to the utility side so the battery can automatically be recharged when power returns. Without a complete system install, plan on mopping out the basement. If you're using the battery as a tool for other purposes, you're just shortening the life of the battery and defeating it's longevity of use as a power backup to the pump.
So this battery cant be on all the time as a backup?

I was wondering if a portable power station in the River Pro’s price range, would actually start and run a sump pump like the Zoeller M98, now I know! Our pump is the Zoeller M53. It has a bit more amperage requirement at 4.8 to 9.7 vs the M98 at 4.7 to 9.4. Whether an increased power delta of 0.1 and 0.3 would make a difference, I would only be WAG’ing.
Having this sort of power outage back-up would be great. Obviously though, if the pump fails (rather than a power failure), zero A/C power is the least of one's problems.
Our water in-flow needs weren't high, so we went with a water powered pump (the Liberty SJ10) for back-up purposes. There are several other brands to choose, including Zoeller and Base Pump.
However, having a portable power station would be handy for not only a sump pump, but for other purposes.
BTW, the River Pro has a new Pro 2 offering. It is similarly priced, but has a different (supposedly better) battery (LFP ) technology, with a longer warranty period from 3 to 5-years. I do wonder if the new River Pro 2's output and inverter would handle the start-up and run demands of the referenced Zoeller M98 pump as well as its previous sibling?
How did you make out I'm getting a system installed with a Zoller 53 next month, i have a 2000 watt 4500 surge sola generator end was hoping this would take care of my needs. I did comment above before iI seen this, so the pumps do not continuously run run I figured on 2 hrs if that? My math so far
I could find the average amp draw is 9.6amp at 110volts so that's 1056 watts average run time. The start-up amperage is 25.9amp at 110 volts that 2849 watts max draw.
The ecoflow delta pro would at 3500 watts more for surge maybe the ecoflow customer service could help

That pump will draw that 9.4 amps. I test them all the time.
There are other brands that only use 4 amps try one of those. Ion wc33i or some pro series pumps.

I have a bo0geRV 1500. Only problem with my back up battery is that if there is not a constant draw it shuts off to save battery.
This will not work as a ups. Your pump draws more than 600watts and the eco flow ups function will not work. I noticed there is no video of you demonstrating the ups function.
Well the river pro plugged on the main house grid and the sump pump plugged on the River Pro, while there's power in the grid it won't use the battery power but once that grid power goes offline the sump pump will be using the River Pro battery, yes its not fully Uninterrupted because it'll have very few milliseconds for this to start which in sump pump i don't think it'd matter much.
With X-Boost turned on EcoFlow states it can run appliances up to 1800 watts. The only downside it's the voltage drops significantly so sensitive electronics wouldn't work but I don't think it would hurt this pump.
@@desupernoodle It can run the pump under normal conditions but the manual says the UPS function over 600 watts will not work so if a power failure happens the pump won’t come on.

Anyone else in a similar situation? My sump pumps (Zoeller 1/2hp) cycle on 2-3 times per minute during heavy non stop rain lasting more then a day. (I have a negative slope in my yard so French drains do not work in my situation) I do have a generac whole house generator but I was also looking into the delta max 2000. Planning on using it for camping trips and if one day my generac doesn’t kick on at least I’l have another back up system to keep the sump pumps running a few hours…
Yes mine runs like that, PLUS I have to run 2-3 submersible pumps to bring water that runs in from the other side of the basement down to the sump pump!
The associated article mentions UPS mode didn't work for you as your sump pump's startup wattage was too high for the power station. I'm assuming that if you used a higher wattage power station that can handle the startup power surge, the UPS mode should work?
So how does the 17 hours compare to if you added a traditional battery backup sump pump to your system? $575 is definitely more expensive than those.
But the battery could only charge the pump then. With the power station, you can charge more.
Also the back up pump is usually a smaller and weaker pump. Whereas with this it’s using the main pump. Obviously it all depends on your needs. Some situations will be fine with a smaller back up. Others may need the power of the main pump.

Yes, you could keep it running for days with solar. With that said for the price I would step up to the Delta 2. That unit has more battery capacity, power output, solar input, and you might be able to run your refrigerator and sump. You can usually find the Delta 2 on sale for around $700 amzn.to/3wSCM8h

Hi, if you want the battery to last even longer, I recommend using HydroCheck Sensors V2 to override your float. I did this with my Liberty 257 (with KMF switch) and now my pump starts once every 25 minutes in rainy condition, instead of once every 5-7 min. In the winter, I am now at 4 hours interval! I configured my setup to let the water go higher in my pit, but the pump then starts less often but runs a bit longer. It means more running amps vs surge amps.

There was a power outage for a second or two and was curious and went to basement and saw water puddle.
I think AC switch did not turn back on when the power came back on.

I found out the hard way that this unit is not powerful enough to handle the M98. When the M98 kicks on, it sends a surge to the battery that kicks the battery's circuit breaker. You defiantly need a larger unit.
So for the same price or probably less as the power bank, why not put in a basement watchdog system? Mine is just the backup pump, controller and big yacht battery. Can usually get about a week of running of runs normally. I have never lost power that long. And always keeps batter topped up when you have power.
Because your system has one use and one use only - as a basement watchdog system. The EcoFlow has multiple use case scenarios both at home and on the road!
Your calculations are missing to account for the spikes in consumption when its motor starts every time of the 20 cycles.
the pump is oversized, as you noted, the most significant electrical consumption is during starting.
Does the app have a notification function to let you know when it is experiencing high draws (example power goes out and it has to run your sump pump)?

I read that this is NOT a good UPS system, because if the battery empties, then the house power comes back on, the battery's outlets must be re-activated manually, so the pump would remain OFF, though the house has power.
It's still great considering it gives you time when the power goes indeed to off. Much better than having no back up at all. I rather have this. Would give me a solid day to react with a real generator if required.
WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO REACTIVATE?
The app has been updated - so that when electricity is restored, the unit comes back on with the AC function on. A great improvement.

Great video. I have become super paranoid about sump pump failure scenarios. Essentially there are two points of failure: the pump itself and/or the power fails. I would like to be able to swap in a backup pump in an emergency in the event it fails, but not run two simultaneously, i.e. a quick manual swap. Is there a best practice for this in terms of setting up the pipes so I can easily swap in another unit? My setup now is all PVC top to bottom with no easily removeable sections.
Sounds like a transfer pump would fit your purpose: connect garden hose pipes to input & output ends, and then in an emergency, just put the input hose in the sump pit, turn on the transfer pump, and discharge water from the output end (either to your discharge pipe or stick it out of the window. This should be way easier than swapping a sump pump in an emergency

EcoFlo just told me their River Pro will not power properly a Zoeller 0.3 h.p. ( M53) 1035w, and you have the stronger .5 HP. (M98). "OVERLOAD" condition trips most of the time. Am sending two River Pros back to Eco Flow.
I just bought a Delta 2 which you can find for $800 and that outputs 1800W(instead of the 600W the river can do) while being used as a EPS (Emergency Power supply) which is what I'm planning on doing. Hope it works.

Have watched a lot of your videos and appreciate your work. However, this video isn't adding up. The Zoeller M98 you mention and show in a previous video doesn't match the specs listed. The M98 uses 9.4 running amps & 29.2 starting amps, which equates to 1128 running watts and 3504 starting watts. The specs you listed on this video (4.7 min/running & 9.4 max/starting) seems to match up with a Zoeller M264 Sewerage pump. If you ran the M98 using the Ecoflow River Pro (or even River 2 Pro), the circuit breaker would trip on startup. Can you confirm what you used?

What about making your sump pump quieter? My sump pump is right under our bedroom. It wakes me up so many times! Is it possible to have the pipes too well secured. I noticed your pipes shake a little when the pump cycles. My pipe doesn’t shake at all. Maybe the sound is resonating through the floor joists?

I also have a camera on it so I can monitor the sump. I had to call my son once when the sump pump actually got stuck on and kept running.
Is it the Sump Pump motor sound that is loud or the check valve closing (loud knock) at the end of the cycle?
@@EverydayHomeRepairs it’s definitely the sound of the motor. We can hear it through the entire cycle. Do they make pipe insulation to wrap 1 1/2” pipe? Maybe rubber mounts?
I have a system being installed with a Zoler lr 53 pump. I have a similar solar with ups but rated to 2000 watts and 4500 surge. I guess I don't understand how the pump actually works or kicks on or my math is really off. I thought I only really had a max almost 2hrs if that , so they do not continuously run? Basically my Math based off the conversion for wattage alone I could find the average amp draw is 9.6amp at 110volts so that's 1056 watts average run time. The start-up amperage is 25.9amp at 110 volts that 2849 watts max draw. I hope you see this because I really do not want to buy a battery back up system. I have gas generators that could def handle the load but I was looking for something easy really easy like this that even my wife could handle if needed.
Did you ever figure this out? I had incorrectly purchased weaker River 2 Max w/ 1000W max output so I decided to reach out to the manufacturer of my pump and the numbers they gave me worried me!
The "inrush current" for a pump, is around 4x the nameplate amps.
The pump you have there, uses a few different motor vendors. So please verify the Amps on the model tag for your pump.
I believe the highest amps, of our vendors is 13 Amps.
The inrush current would be approximately 52 Amps. If you are looking for watts, Amps x Volts = Watts. So 52 x 115 = approximately 5980 watts at startup.
I Used mine the other day when the power went out and it kept saying overload on the echo flow unit. the pump I have is a Zoller 1/2 horsepower it says 9.4 Amp on the pump. What’s the issue? I bought this because you sold me on it. 8’ to discharge.
Hi Rodney...received a 2200 watt inverter from Giandel yesterday. Hooked it up to provide backup power for my Zoeller pump 1/3 hp which is rated at 6.8 amps. I also got an overload reading. Tech support said they thought the initial surge on the pump may be much higher than the 6.8 amps stamped on the sump pump label. They said I may need a much larger inverter...perhaps as big as 4000 watts. The unit you bought is rated at a max of 1200 watts.
I think I finally understand the calculations. But if you had to back 2 M98s, would you need a second River Pro? Or upgrade to the Delta?
How do you run this permanently attached so it acts as a ups backup in a power outage, then returns to normal power after the outage is over, without manual changes?

Hi. Plug the Ecoflow into the wall, plug the sump pump into the Ecoflow and turn on the AC (alternating current) button. It's that simple.
The thing that you can't determine is how many years will this power unit last compared to a to a acid battery package. Last in years and years. Not in one pump cycle.
Does this unit have the "automatic restart" feature? Meaning that it will switch from battery power back to permanent power once the electricity is restored? Or do you need to be home and manually press a button to do this reset?

Yes - there is a function on the app that allows the AC to be active when the battery is recharged.

I think the Delta 2 is a great mix of capability and cost.
I have the older Delta Mini (882wh), and that is exactly why I bought it. My power [normally] only goes off for less than an hour, but at times it has been longer. I just wanted something to run the sump pump long enough for me to assess the outage and then get the generator up and running if need be. My pump (1/3 hp Ridgid) pulls like 495 watts when pumping. The Delta Mini can easily handle that draw for hours...kicking on and off, obviously. Plus, being honest, as a Senior, the Mini was the largest one that was still within my capabilities to carry around, lol. Its only 23 pounds.

Watched this a few times when we purchased our first home with a sump pump. Currently referring to it as we have no power in NoVA. There's a great deal for the 256kh on Amazon but don't know if it would be powerful enough for a 1/4 HP sump pump. Any ideas??
I've tried this in a EPS setup (power cord connected). The problem I've experienced is that after the pump works for a cycles in minutes, the AC outlet on the battery would automatically shut off (a terrible scenario). Do you have similar experience, and do you know why? I read somewhere that X-boost do not work when battery is being charged. I also used an extension cord to charge the battery continuously. Could either of these be the reason?
I just want to verify. You mentioned that If I connected sump pump to the battery which connecting to an outlet, then, endlessly sump pump would run unless the power outage continues. In this connection, the battery is automatically charged without overcharged as well. Is it true?

Will this work with my existing pedestal sump pump. The vertical distance is less than 5 feet.
$650 for 720 Wh (6 Ah @ 120 VAC) for a dedicated, stationary use does not seem like a good value to me when you can buy a 1200 Wh (100 Ah @ 12 VDC) battery and a combined controller/ inverter/ charger for $450.
It seems more reasonable for someone who values the portability, but that seems irrelevant when used for a sump pump back-up.
You can't get 100% of the rated capacity from the battery. For calculations, estimate that you can get 80% of the stated capacity and you'll be much closer. Some are higher, some are lower.
Can you “daisy chain” a standard AGM deep cycle battery to this unit or do you have to buy a whole other eco flow ?
So the batteries capacity is 720Wh, the AC load is 564W, but for the inverter to produce 564W of AC output, the input power will be higher due to inverter conversion loss, so 564W/0.85 = 663W draw from batteries (most inverter has eff. of 85 ~ 90%), plus when the inverter is on but no load is running, I.E. the pump not running, the inverter will still drain the batteries so you have to factor all that to get closer run time. I have Bluetti EB70, the standby current draw is about 15W when inverter is on but the AC load is not on. I wonder what the standby power draw of the inverter (inverter is on but no AC load) of Ecoflow, did you try leaving the inverter on with no load to see how long it takes to drain down the batteries with ECO mode off.

seems the 1/3 hp model has almost the same specs regarding amps and volts so would I be OK running that model with, rather than a power station, a separate inverter rated for 1500 watts coupled with a 50 amp hour lithium battery. Cost of those 2 items roughly 300$ but not sure as to the inverter running with a lithium type battery as some of the inverters imply they'll only work with lead and acid. What do you think ? Finally got to test my system yesterday late July, we had a very dry spring in Chicago suburbs. Anyway it worked great , ran it for 2 hours and the battery a 50AH lithium never flinched as the converter showed the same voltage after the 2 hours of pumping 13.2 prior and 13.2 after. The water pump I was using is only ,as recall 350 watts but it seemed to be plenty powerful enough as it was pumping about every 4 minutes about estimate of 8 gallons up about 5 feet. Cost of battery and converter $260 pump was $50. Our HOA does not allow gas generators
With solar generators, they shut down if there is no power draw. So you have to physically turn on to run your sump pump, you just can't leave the sump pump plugged in to the solar generator and expect to come on when it rains. The solar generator would have to be already powered on. I wonder if you kept a low power draw device (like a small fan) plugged in to the solar generator along with the sump pump. If you keep the fan running, the solar generator would already be powered up if sump pump was needed.

This model when used as an uninterrupted power supply times itself out at 12 hrs. And shuts the a/c output off. owners manual p.3 note 9.

Great video. Question I have 2 sump pumps one is 3/10 HP and the other 1/2 HP I have a Ryoby 1800 inverter but when e got 3” in an hour it did not last 20 min with 4 40 watt batteries. But It will not run off 120 volt. the one you showed is nice but like you said pricy would a Ace cyber power 1500 VA run my 1/2 hp pump you think?
did you watch the ace hardware you tube video on that unit ? I too am thinking of getting that product as have a .3 hp pump but noted it had 2 9AH lead type batteries that need replacement after only 2 years. Thde replacing video is on you tube and is somewhat of a hassle
Just curious how to see if this is still running well. Looking to do something similar but called ecoflow and they said the river could not run my sump pump despite it being a Zoeller as well, not sure if they were trying to upsale me to the delta model or not.
Worked well but using it as a UPS and just keeping it plugged in to the wall and then the sump pump plugged into the Ecoflow did not work. In this configurations the Ecoflow was not able to use the XBoost mode which is actually critical for the Ecoflow to run the sump. So UPS not going to work but if the power goes out and I am home I will be able to depend on the Ecoflow to run the Sump Pump and hopefully avoid a tough situation.

@@mcsisawesome No it does not. Further, the river unit in this video will not run as a UPS( more accurately an EPS ((Emergency Power supply)). When plugged in to AC the wattage booster does not work so the sump pump will not work. I just bought the Ecoflow Delta 2 which can easily be found at $800 and that can do 1800w while plugged into AC so I'm hoping/ assuming that will work. The auto transfer switch would be used more for the Delta pro where it can handle a larger portion of your home(at least that is my understanding being fairly new to this stuff).

I does, but be careful to know how much power your sump pump pulls. The XBoost feature which I needed to use on this video does not work in the UPS setting. The next River 2 Pro would do it for me compared to this older version (seen on this video). You could also look at the Delta 2 amzn.to/3YTQodr. That would easily do it, more capacity, and looks like Amazon has a $200 coupon right now 👍 Best of luck.
