I saw the stream live as it was being made! It was definitely very cool and I had fun playing what is a very interesting take on Tetris and Scrabble combined :) PS: 0:33 EliGabRet cameo!!!
The game is fun, but I'd like to make a few suggestions: First off, I should mention there is something called the "Tetris Guideline Rules" for how you should make a Tetris game, written by the Tetris Company. It dictates how randomizing pieces and default controls and kicks and such should work. Of the things in the guideline, The controls, and piece kicks, (basically how the piece is moved after a rotation if it can't rotate in place) are arguably the most important changes you can make. Additionally, another good change would be being able to rebind the controls. Gameplay wise, I feel like it's worth having more smaller triminoes and dominoes over the 4-length pieces. Additionally, grouping characters together in ways that make sense for a word would drastically make the game much easier and more rewarding to play, and the challenge would then come with levels and higher fall speeds. Speaking of fall speeds, Those are mentioned in the guideline, but the main thing to add is a grace period when the block touches the ground, and resetting it after a movement. (but not forever) An idea to try is wildcard tiles, which count as any letter and might make it a little easier. Maybe use an asterisk (*) or something? Overall, quite a fun mashup!
The 'boring' 3-letter version has a piece with three exclamation marks on it which is a sort of wildcard, in that it'll cause an explosion where it is placed.
The game is really fun! I think it gets a bit too hard when they start dropping faster though, there's not a lot of time to make strategic decisions. It would be really fun if you added a 'puzzle' mode where you have unlimited time to decide where to drop the pieces. The difficulty increase over time could instead be getting less of the smaller blocks or more evenly distributed letters rather than speed ups.
@@tbird-z1r sad part is that I could actually see the "look" of a scrabble piece being claimed as IP, and nobody wants to spend the money to fight it in court.
@@davidkinkade81 that was not the point, the point was that Cary mentioned that no two letter words contain a "C" or a "V", so I provided a counterexample by guy reaction
Awesome! Saw this in Hank & John Green's "We're here" newsletter the last week (replacing Hank's "Nerdy Connections"). Don't think my brain can think fast enough for this, but it looks amazing!
Wow, this Scrabble Tetris mashup is incredibly creative and fun to watch! Combining the classic mechanics of Tetris with the strategic wordplay of Scrabble adds a whole new layer of challenge and excitement. Watching you and Polymars go head-to-head was intense, and it's clear you put a lot of thought into balancing the game modes with those explosive four-letter words. Your passion and dedication during the 5-hour coding stream really paid off, making for a unique and engaging game. Can't wait to see who hits that 700-point milestone first! Keep up the awesome work! 🚀🎮📚
10:06 I just looked it up, and... it might be? It's a skateboarding slang term from the 1980s, used to describe someone with a nihilistic and reckless attitude. Slang and jargon is weird when it comes to word lists, it's kind of a guessing game which ones are included and which aren't.
This seems really fun! I have a suggestion on the letter generation: instead of picking a random letter for each tile based on the letter distribution in the english language, it would be interesting to see what changes using this procedure: 1 pick a random tile in the tetromino 2 pick a random letter for that tile based on the letter distribution 3 pick an adjacent tile 4 pick a letter from that tile NOT based on the standard letter distribution, but based on how often each letter appears next to the already chosen one 5 repeat 3-4 until done This could be improved further using sequences of 3 or 4 letters instead of 2 when the tiles which already have a letter and the new tile are aligned. I feel like this would increase the probability of making words and reduce the game difficulty, which might or might not be desired, so it could be an optional game mode Great work anyway!
Nice stream! I really like how this turned out, and also having PolyMars in the stream made an EPIC crossover! (Also nice xkcd reference! I didn’t even notice! Thanks @SquidCoder)
Great game, always fun building something you can then enjoy! Some constructive feedback: Rarer letters should be worth more points 6 letter words give double, as well as 2 words at the same time! Floating letters should fall (and give chain reactions checking each square it falls) Freeze time for half a second after you spell a word (while animation is going or pieces are falling, both rewarding to see and giving you a short breather) Good stuff as always sir!
Personally I'd find it a lot easier to play if there was an additional option to change it so the directions were on the arrow keys instead of random letters, as the arrow keys (with my right hand) are totally instinctive to me from far too many years of scrolling with the arrow keys, but using letters on the far left of the keyboard with my left hand (or even physically shifting the keyboard across and using my right) was not. I kept accelerating a piece down when I was trying to rotate it and shifting it to the right or left when I wanted to accelerate it down etc etc.
As a proud NZ-er, I can confirm Tui is a native bird, and they are so cute. And.. LETS GO! I am proud to say that I watched the amazing versus game and got name mike boomed by polymars.

Cary you've gotta let me rebind these keys! I need my arrow keys with z/x for left/right spins in single player!! Cool concept regardless :) I got 673 on my first game!
i think if you make a three letter word it should make the letters glow slightly, yielding more points if you clear all of them at once (e.g. "ban" becomes glowing "ban", giving one extra point if you clear the whole thing by turning it into "bane") great game either way though
What's the dictionary used? CSW21 or NWL23? Looks like neither, 11:06 ROOS didn't get cleared even tho it's in both lexicons. Does anyone know which Scrabble dictionary this game uses? Edit: I found it by comparing the 2-letter words in the fillability website to that in the 2-letter word list. It's the *OSPD4* lexicon. Not only is this lexicon outdated (most recent is OSPD7), but it's also not common. The common ones are CSW21 and NWL23.
oh my gosh, I love the game analysis near the end of the video! I wonder how much effort it took to realize all of those and show the charts for the available words...
for a suggestion, it would be cool to have the default control scheme as used in Tetrio, with Z and X being usable for rotation and C for holding a piece (and A for 180 if that's good). good for playing with both hands and is more intuitive when there is little standard on what the up arrow's behavior usually represents across tetris games and clones across the internet
