Just started watching your videos about a week ago and by far the best I’ve seen. I’m just starting my Sim build and following your instructions to a tee including most of the materials used. Thanks for the inspiration!
I've done so much research to be able to do my own simulator and came across your video yesterday and it is by far the best I've seen. Definitely going with this version of a simulator for my space. Thank you for all the details and explanation!
Duuuuuude…I just made this for my setup and its super. I spec’d it to fit in my Fiberbilt mat insert (which was killing my elbow) and it feels great. Was considering buying a name brand one but this fits the bill. Tip of the cap. Happy New Year.
My man! After we have talked, I’ve picked up a BLP and we start new flooring next month. So nice to have you on the other side of the valley to pick your brain!
Another great video, dude. Thanks for all your knowledge. I'm in the process of building mine now, and I really love how you've put it together and made common-sense decisions. If I don't win this... definitely making one for mine as I work thru the final flooring over the next week or two.
Like, comment and new subscriber. I received a Garmin R10 for my birthday and have been using it at the range. As the weather gets cold, I’m looking to create my own indoor sim. This channel is awesome, thanks!
Awesome, glad to hear it! Check out my latest video for the new golf sim projector, it has wireless support for ipads and phones and may make it easier for you to get up and running!
Love all your videos. Older guy putting in my first simulator. Any thoughts on this DIY hitting strip vs a Sigpro Softy with regard to avoiding injury? The advantage of the DIY option is huge with regard to thickness if you want to putt on, which I do. Thanks for the awesome videos.
Super helpful! Literally in the process of this as we speak! Only issue for me is I can't find a good turf at a local shop to use for the swing pad.. Thank you for sharing!
Hello! This is great, thank you very much for making this video. I had two questions if you would be so kind to answer. 1. On the outside of your foam strips there is no support, is there a reason for this? I am considering 60x40 (~16"x24") so I have plenty of room for a tee and iron shots, but I'm unsure as to why the strip isn't supported on the sides. 2. The plastic you used for the ends - can this just be wood? Thanks again!
Hello, with the rigidity of the Lexan board and the foam strips underneath offering support, it really isn't necessary as it doesn't sag. You could always use additional foam strips on the sides to support it if needed though. Definitely check your hitting window of your launch monitor to ensure you it supports a width of that size before making it bigger without needing it. Also, yes you can absolutely use wood! I used plastic for the video to make it look overall more professional, but would is an easier and more affordable option. I'd probably go with MDF.
@PixelGolf Thank you for coming back to me so soon and for the advice. I'm using a Garmin R10 so I have a reasonable shot window to operate in. I've ordered my polycarbonate sheet and materials, I'll let you know how I get on!
Fantastic video! I just started my simulator build process and have taken quite a bit away from watching your videos. I'm hoping you might be able to shed some light on the turf material and replacement process. I plan to order a little extra putting turf so I can use the excess to make a hitting strip that matches the rest of the floor. Have you found that the putting turf works well as a hitting strip cover? I'm guessing it doesn't last super long, so how often do you swap the old turf for new on the hitting strip? Is replacement as simple as peeling off the old and gluing down the new?
Hello, sorry for the late reply... The putting turf works great and the Money Putt is like 3 months in and still looks awesome! My last affordable putting turf needed replacement every 3 months. It is as simple as peeling it off and gluing on a new piece.
You know, I did think of trying that, but honestly the glue I used to adhere the turf holds perfectly and when it needs to be replaced it pulls off easy without a mess. It has been holding up exceptionally well. I did have an issue with the riser end pieces coming loose, I had to scuff the surfaces better and re-glue, but still great after months of use!
The plastic board piece you linked is 3/8in thick. Is that the correct thickness? I’m assuming after you add the gorilla tape and Velcro that adds to 1” total thickness?
Great looking insert looks easy to make im not sure if i can get lexan in Australia but i will have a look on line, i was looking at maybe the purchase Sigpro softy its expensive and they dont ship to Australia, i haven't seen a post since pine hurst cheers mal
I had a commercially manufactured hitting insert similar in construction to what you have described here. I don't know what type of plastic material they used for the actual board, but after a few weeks it started to curl up a bit on the edges. What has your experience been with the material you have used?
@@PixelGolf Thanks so much for the reply. I will try the Lexan with the new insert I'll be putting together. And.... thanks so much for the time and effort you put into this endeavor.
Why not do the lexicon board and foam strips under your existing turf? Why did you need a new turn, is it thicker? I would think the hollow area and foam would be the softening point. What turn did u buy and how was it different from the existing turn you cut out? Just realized is your service more of a putting surface and not a hitting surface. I currently have a hitting mat so I’m thinking I could just simply cut out a section of the hitting mat 12 x 24 and the foam workout mat under it, which I also have and create this hitting strip using the original turf, I cut out and replacing the workout mat with the foam strips and the lexicon board. That should achieve the same thing am I correct? Planning on making this vs buying a SigSofty for $300
Hello, I think a lot of questions you have can be answered in this video, th-cam.com/video/-p3kcerMwy8/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AVBRmFmJtE0-GpBf Check it out and let me know if you have additional questions. You are also welcome to give me a call. My number is on our site, pixelgolfco.com
How does hitting on this foam feel? Would you say it gives a good fairway feel? Do you get much truf shock? It seems like this set up might be really hard on your wrists.

about 1 1/4" thick. Though, you can change the riser thickness if yo need it taller. You can simply use wood for the end pieces instead to save money and have more flexibility on height.
I actually helped a viewer who put them right on the carpet and he said they worked great, though I don’t have any first hand experience… You could also try and then add a wood underlay later.
Hey thanks for the info and the update. Quick question from your original build video you were using a putting turf you got from your local turf supplier, did you switch the turf for the entire flooring? If so what were the reasons you switched? From the links it shows you went with the SIG Money Putt Turf.
Yes, I switched from the Supreme Putt I sourced locally, to the Money Putt Turf for the whole surface. The main reason I switched is because after 3 years the turf was showing wear where my feet were and the hitting insert would show green residue on my irons, not terrible though and easily wipes off... With this new turf, no residue and it looks great after 3 months on the turf and insert!
@@PixelGolf Thanks for the quick response. I will essentially be building out the same type of setup you have. One additional question: how far from the screen do you hit? standard 10 feet? or more?
So ive built both styles of your hitting strip. I understand why you moved to the 3/4in hdpe since its heavier and slightly lower than the mat to account for the plexiglass. But the 2nd version of your strip the front hdpe strip keeps breaking free from the double sided tape. If i switch to glue ill lose some of the height the tape creates. Do you have this issue? Is this why you use 36 instead of 24 length?
Hello, I believe we spoke on the phone, but I'll post it here as well for others. The plastic board used in the video, I went with to make the whole thing look more professional, but the material is very stubborn to stick. You could use wood instead as you won't see it anyway and it is a cheaper option. But, what I did on mine to reinforce it is drilled 3 small holes through the turf and Lexan through to the plastic end pieces and used flat top screws to drill straight in. This worked great for anyone having this issue.
Just what I was looking for sir. Nice info. Question, a link in the description for the high density board is 3/4. Is that correct? Just about to finish up my SIM. Really looking forward to it.
Great video and easy to follow..I hope. Lol ..Currently using a mat from rawhide. A little rough on joints. Looking to make one like yours and place it into my current mat. Of course question... plastic end pieces are 3/4 " thick but foam tape runners are 1" thick. ?? Am I missing 1/4" somewhere. Probably a joke in there as well. Thank you again for you quality videos.
The end pieces are 3/4” and the foam is 1”, but the 1/4” difference is negligible and with the adhesive under the turf and the end pieces as well as the velcro, it ends up being about perfect. Also, you can just use 3/4" wood for the end pieces as well and save some money.
Thank you! I've tried the Fiberbuilt, great mat for joint pain, but I dint like how easy the club went through the ball... This was years ago though, so they may have made some revisions. Never tried the SigPro Softy. If they see htis, hopefully they send me one to test, lol.
@@PixelGolf I understand. I ended up buying everything you did for the computer build so I could follow step by step. Now, I may also still this hitting insert idea. Just so I am totally certain, I need the underlayment to be 1" total in thickness and then the turf height doesn't matter as I am using that as the hitting turf, correct? I am using the TFD Putting Elite which is 7/16" thick if that matters.. Thanks for all of your help!
I am curious, why just 3 of the 1 inch soft foam strips? Would it not be better to have the entire board between the end pieces covered in the soft foam?
I personally like the insert option as it looks cleaner and doesn't take up as much space, which leaves room in the area for putting in my case... It's also easier and more affordable to replace.

Just wanted to try something new really. You could use gym mat, wood, or whatever you want to get the height correct.

It is 1.5” tall. However, you can change the height by putting a piece of wood under or it if you need it higher.
