This is the best DIY walkthrough I’ve seen to build an insert. Thanks for taking the time to document it for those of us always trying to tweak our setup!
Hey Man. Thanks a million on video and explanation. It’s guys like you that save us from shelling out hundreds of dollars. I have saved this video, as my sim construction starts in June. Grazie Mille.
I’ve made the mistake of shelling out lots of money for poor products which is how this channel was born so I’m glad it’s helpful! Feel free to drop any questions or comments while you start your journey - and enjoy!
This is great! I am going to build my simulator in about a month and will definitely be doing this! I was going to buy the Gung-ho Holy Grail insert but I love that this one is replaceable and easily serviced.
Looks great. It’s so hard to find one pre made online that isn’t a fortune. Just finished with my simulator with a mevo plus after being inspired by your set up. Keep up the good work!
Great video, ended up glueing the foam part to my wood floor and using Velcro to attach it to the plexiglass. If you have extra plexiglass you can put a piece a couple inches behind your ball to make sure you aren’t chunking. Kind of like the eyeline golf speed trap.
Great video. Just installing my 1st simulator & have really appreciated everyone’s video’s/guidance on how to maximize the space & make the most of the set up
This is awesome. I ended buying a monster mat but wish I had built something like this instead, it’s just not soft enough. Thanks for the detailed video!
awesome design. certainly admire the thought, care and integrity you not only put into your craftsmanship, but your subscriber community as well. thanks
Great description, I’ve been struggling with coming up with a suitable mat, tried using different materials under a the mat but nothing seems to work. Can’t wait to make this mat and try it out . Thanks for the video
That is a great design! I'm in Mesa, AZ and I'm currently puting a chipping\putting green in my backyard with multiple hitting matts in various places and lengths around the yard and I'm going to put one of these in every hitting matt. Thank you for sharing!
Thanks - I am in Phoenix, AZ and am doing a building addition where I am going to have a simulator. I have been thinking that this is a great solution for the “consumable” pieces of the hitting mat.
Such easy to follow instructions. I think that even I can follow them. Recently got a matt but not satisfied. It will be great to have control over material.
This is awesome. Was looking for some videos on indoor golf simulators and came across your channel. Looking forward to watching more videos from you and continue to learn! :)
Awesome video, just in the process of setting up indoor mevo+ sim, and the best hitting mat insert by far. Have looked at plenty that seem to either be hitting off a rock or hitting off a bedroom pillow, you’ve obviously researched the foam densities and come up with the perfect solution.. will be stealing your setup materials and looking forward to your next video. (Hopefully on putting mat solutions for mevo+ sims!) 👌
After a successful proof of concept, I put together my actual hitting strip today. Honestly found the 1" foam you linked a little stiff. Not bad, but I felt like there could be some more "give" to it. Fortunately was building mine into a 3/4" sheet of melamine. So I had to go with a different foam anyway. This one came out awesome! Unlike any mat I've ever hit off of. And I've tried a bunch. Including the high dollar gel mats. I also set it up so that I can easily replace it. Drilled a few holes at each end of the polycarbonate. Then screwed it to the melamine with some truss screws and rubber washers. Will be super easy to replace when the turf wears out. It also simplifies the build and saves having to buy a gym mat (or similar) to go on the ends of the Lexan. This DIY mat is definitely the way to go. Awesome to hit off of, and can't beat the price. Spent $45 on a 15' strip of turf, $10 on the foam strips, and $15 on the polycarbonate sheet. Everything else I already had on hand (melamine base, screws/hardware, and construction adhesive). I also made a stance mat with some of the turf. But still have enough left over materials to make 3 replacement strips!
Have you gone to using the standard rubber tees that you see sticking through the mats at a driving range? If not, what type of foam do you use to put under the mat for your tee. Thanks
Been doing these and loving it. Thanks for the video! However, I'm looking for turf recommendations! I don't love the turf Ive been using as it really doesn't last. I have to keep the vacuum near for all the turf shards that come off during a session. Anyone out there have turf they've been liking for this DIY insert build?
just built a golf net myself from scratch! also bought a swing caddie sc300i ! i would love this as an amazing custom made DIY to my at home simulator :) pls pls pls !!!
Quick question as I’m considering upgrading from fiberbuilt stance mat. How level does this sit to the rest of your putting turf? I’d imagine the thickness of the acrylic panel. My current launch monitor needs to be same height. Thanks…BTW, low the channel.
What about gluing one of the rubber tee holders to the bottom of this? Then either cutting it flush with the turf or leaving it set up a little bit? Rather than sticking into foam?
Thanks for the vid. If my gym mats are about 1/2” to 5/8” thick will this still work. Or will I have to double up the thickness to about 1”. Will the acrylic break if it’s not 1”? Thanks
Thanks for sharing! Been working on sourcing all the parts to make my own. So this is great timing. Had figured everything out, aside from what type and thickness plastic to use for the turf base. Was debating between polycarbonate and ABS in the neighborhood of 1/8”. Think I’ll end up ordering both to test out any differences.
@@PixelGolf I ended up picking up some Polycarbonate at HD (.095-ish thickness ). Basically because I'm eager and didn't want to wait on shipping. Kind of glad I did. I think 1/8", while not much thicker, would be a little too stiff. I also think the foam is what has the biggest impact. Already put one together for testing. Have a second sheet of PC that'll be used for my final product. Going to actually screw it into a OSB base. As opposed to using adhesive or velcro. Figure this will make it easy to swap out the sheet.
Any reason why just the 3 strips of low density foam? Seems more would give added support if the ball was hit in a spot that was between the strips? TIA
how do you feel about the turf here? it looks similar to the putting turf i have from home depot i used as my flooring i put over some workout foam. i just wonder if its a little thin and if some turf with another half inch or so of foam would be helpful at all? i plan to build a new mat to put on top of my existing turf (currently have a 5x5 rawhide but my elbow is killing me)
Play dough or modeling clay works good under the mat to hold a tee. Just found it hard to drill a hole in the plexiglass without it breaking. Will use a cutting tool next time.
Hey, I am all about getting creative and trying new things! Especially if it is repurposing old items, we throw enough things away in this world anyway😬 Let me know how it goes!
So, I have had a go at making my own mat from following your guide, and think it is close to yours. One thing, that might sound like a daft question ..... but ..... do you find that when hitting, it is quite loud? Obviously, not going to be totally quiet, as you are hitting plastic/perspex with the club ... but .... there is def a good THUD when hitting
Hmmm, I don’t really notice anything offensive… But, I suppose it would be somewhat louder. May yours is sliding. Make sure it’s a snug fit front to back.
Do you actually have to cut the acrylic? Couldn't you just keep ot that size and Push the hitting strip up through the hole in your mat, if using a hitting mat? I'm asking because I've seen some people's strips jump out of the hole they've cut after they hit.
@@PixelGolf Thanks for the heads up. Peter Igogo is the name tied to scammer's Paypal account. He game me an email address as well if you have a way to report him to Google.
Hey guys, one I thing I noticed is that acrylic you mentioned. Lexan is a polycarb that is specifically meant for containing impacts and durability. Its a much better option to choose compared to acrylic.
It works perfectly, though I changed the design of the tee. I basically bought one of those rubber tees and drilled a hole using a step drill through the lexan the width of the tee and just simply insert the tee underneath.
Awesome idea. How does it affect spin numbers? I consistently get low spin numbers on my mat compared to on course. Which result in too much carry and roll with my irons. Using a GCQ so I know spin is accurate.
That is a hard thing to tell, but I’ll see what I can do! It does produce similar launch angles as real grass, which is a huge plus compared to others I’ve bought and tried.
Great video! Keep up the great work. Just purchased my Skytrak! Instructions were clear and easy to follow! Hopefully I can win so I use it for my simulator 😉! Cheers!
I hit thousands of shots with no issue at all. I’m using Lexan and have the tee hole set about 2” to the right of the normal hitting zone. Make sure when you drill the hole it’s a clean drill. You can go a step further and sand the drilled edge with a dremel.

This is almost identical to the hitting strip I purchased, very good information and great build. Thank You !!
How did the tee insert work? I would worry a tee would break off in it and you wouldn't be able to use it.

I would build around atleast 1”. Less than that wouldn’t benefit from the divot style inserts.
Great tutorial. Thanks! What is the reason you used three strips on the bottom rather than a full piece?
That foam isn’t sold in the sheet, and cost. I don’t feel it’s necessary to have the whole underside filled in with foam.

One of the best options I've seen for a reusable hitting mat in a simulator 👍
In the process of building my hitting mat. Thankyou for the great tips

Yes, you are correct! Poor choice of words! Doing a follow video showing it in action and will make sure to address this. We use Lexan polycarbonate
Nice! Looking for something to improve my (new) simulator space; great content for new guys to chew on.
Hi question about the DIY. Does the foam strips have to be same height as the foam gym mats? Or should it be 1/4 smaller in height?
Same height. You basically want to make it so the end product is level. This will be dictated partly by the foam strips, but mainly by the end pieces.
Building the home simulator this tutorial is gonna help so much👍👍
I can only find .06" and .118" thick sheets in my area. Should I go a bit thicker or thiner than yours?
I would go .118”, that should be fine.
Great design. This idea would save a lot of wrists! I’d love to use it.
Good video! Going to build one myself (unless I win this one of course), just trying to find good turf.
Where do you get the turf. Looks relatively thin.
Which putting turf did you use? That company lists several putting turfs. Nice set up!
how did the hole for the tee work out? I want to try it as well. I built the one you made in the video
It works perfectly, though I changed the design of the tee. I basically bought one of those rubber tees and drilled a hole using a step drill through the lexan the width of the tee and just simply insert the tee underneath.
thanks. Ill do the same@@PixelGolf
So cool, lot more simple then I thought it'd be.
Nice! How critical is the thickness of the lexan? Would too thick = too stiff and/or too thin = broken lexan?
Too thick and it defeats the purpose. I found this thickness up too 1/4” is good. Probably thicker if doing a longer run.
Awesome idea. How does it affect spin numbers? I consistently get low spin numbers on my mat compared to on course. Which result in too much carry and roll with my irons. Using a GCQ so I know spin is accurate.

Great video. How long does the “springiness” last before you would have to build another one?
With how this low density foam works, I would imagine it will last until it starts to rip, if that ever happens…
Great video! Keep up the great work. Just purchased my Skytrak! Instructions were clear and easy to follow! Hopefully I can win so I use it for my simulator 😉! Cheers!
is it possible to use Gym Mat to build a hitting mat ? Just working if it is too hard surface for golf mat
I would not recommend it as it is a very dense material… You can make one, but I would add a diy hitting insert.
