I just completed the simulator following the process by Builds by Maz and I purchased the parts using his suggestions. Just an FYI for those looking to build this and you're looking at his cost of $758.00. The fee being advertised does not include sales tax, possible shipping fees or miscellaneous items. For example, to cut the pipe you may need to purchase a pipe cutter (which I recommend in lieu of the recipricating saw). I also needed 2 cans of primer and 3 cans of paint, but this may be do to my good painting skills. I also needed to purchase contractor paper for the painting process. With that said, his directions were easy to follow and the simulator was easy to build (I built mine by myself due to a lack of friends). My total cost which includes sales tax and shipping was $886.74. I am very pleased with the outcome and looking forward to years of use. Thank you to Builds by Maz!!!

Thanks for watching and good luck with your build! The duck canvas has actually been solid ever since I switched to tying it back with the grommets and string, but I think that poly satin fabric that I used to cover the cushions would also work really well for the entire enclosure.
@@buildsbymaz don't thank me, it's pretty obvious. People on a budget are looking for a cheaper way of enjoying an indoor setup without spending thousands and not having to draw up a crazy blueprint to do it. You simplified it allowing people to use this as a great guideline. 👍

This is a fantastic DIY project build for folks who have the time and patience to build. I’d like to offer some added tips… 1. Consider buying some wire shelving that has the hanger extension so you can lay a piece down in front of the screen under your turf so it will create a ramp. This will eliminate balls hitting the bottom bar and help balls roll back to you as well. It will also help with the lifespan of your screen because one of the highest stress points is at the bottom where you’ve attached the screen around the bar with grommets. Over time that is where you will see rips develop. 2. I would recommend either folding over the edges or adding some other material as a second layer around the perimeter before you add your grommets. Again, I believe over time these grommets will work loose and pop out of the material or cause ripping. I’m in no way being critical. I think this is a great video, but I know from lots of experience exactly how continuous impact on a screen can create stress on the connections and eventual failure of screens. 3. In general people will tend to try to overtighten their screen to get that perfect flat look. For extended screen life, I strongly recommend you let the screen relax more and live with a few small sags. It will add years to the life of your screen, and when the projector is on, will hardly be noticeable.
I need part 2 now though! What projector do I buy? Can I run everything off a basic laptop? Not basic but mid grade. Also, do I need wifi? My garage is detached and pretty far from my house wifi.
I'll try to have part 2 done in the next 2/3 weeks. But I will say if you want to just use a laptop instead of a desktop, you will probably need a high end one. Wifi will be required as well, my garage is detached too but I use a mesh wifi system and it has great range.
@buildsbymaz hell yea. Thank you for getting back to me! I'll get the mesh set up and try out the laptop I have. If it doesn't work I'll get a better one. If you got the specs to recommend that would be great. Flightscope doesn't give the information, at least not that I can find.
@@kylec2615 If you are wanting to run the FlightScope app on PC, you will need an i5 with 8gb ram, and Nvidia 1070 graphics card or equivalent. You can see more detail on their website if you search for the software, and then click the box that says 'requirements'. If you want to run GSPro, which is another popular software, those requirements are listed on the GSPro website as well.
The Mevo Plus isn't as easy as turning it on. Connections issues are my biggest issue with this unit! First tiem setting it up was a nightmare. Nothing on TH-cam shows it and there are zero instructions included with the sim. I do find that it is very accurate and rarely misses picking up a shot. I highly recommend buying the Titleist RCT balls vs putting the metal stickers on balls.
Do you still have connection issues after the first time? After the initial setup mine always connects without issue. I will say their customer support is also great, so if you are still having any problems I definitely recommend reaching out to FlightScope!
My Mevo Plus always have connection issue with my PC setup. I installed a 2nd wifi usb adapter and use it to exclusively connect to the Mevo. My main wifi connects to the home internet so I can do sw updates, browse, etc. It takes a bit of time to detect/connect. Sometimes, I have to go to wifi settings to unconnected and reconnect to the Mevo. What a pain.
The height doesn't really matter too much for the Mevo, it's more just making sure you have enough distance between your hitting area and the screen. But make sure you do some practice swings down there and you aren't hitting the ceiling with your club.
You're welcome! I know, I spent a long time searching for a video to help me with my build and couldn't find one. Glad this will be able to help others
This is the best instructional golf sim video I've seen by a long shot. And the finished product looks great. Any thoughts on a video showing the rest of the set up?
Has the duck canvas held up with taking shanks? If you could do it over, would you prefer the poly satin for the enclosure? Or keep the duck canvas? Thanks in advance!
I have been happy with the duck canvas ever since I switched to the grommet method. I think either fabric is a good choice - the poly satin might be a little more opaque which will help prevent ambient light from getting in. As for durability, you really have to shank a shot pretty bad for a ball to end up hitting the sides, so it's really only happened once or two times, but the canvas has held up fine.
Great build vid. Only thing i would really critique is i would add double the gromments on screen and some self tappers on outside of tubing to hold bungies in place, your screen was quite a bit wavy. I will be saving vid though for future reference, great info and who doesnt wanna save money.
@@buildsbymaz Absolutely you can. Its a great build i seriously will most likely follow. For myself i think i would actually just buy the corner padding for $200 as well, but overall i love it. My buddy and i are upgrading sim room in the next few weeks and i was debating on what to do about a larger screen, this video may have answered that question. Whats even better is i too am going 9x12 so i can literally follow step by step with my own tweaks. Bravo!
The screen width is the same width as the enclosure, so my screen is 12 ft wide, and you should get a 10 ft wide screen. Let me know if I am misunderstanding your question.
@@buildsbymaz At 10:11 you say that the frame should be 3 inches wider than the width of my impact screen. So does that mean I should cut my frame to 10'3" for a 10 ft wide impact screen?
Hey go to about 10:30 in my second video here- th-cam.com/video/OdptnccvFUA/w-d-xo.html That's where I start talking about projectors, and I explain in detail how you should set it up with your enclosure. Hope this helps
How is the impact screen durability? I ask because i have the carls place screen and put a hole in the bottom of it. Also the ball leaves burn marks on the screen. Wondering if im the only one
So far it's been great, but it's only been about 3 months. There are some very light ball marks on my screen as well, but you can't see them at all once the projector is on.
Looking back at it now that it's finished, is there a different material you would have went with for the sides? Or are you still happy with the duck canvas?
Since I switched to the grommet method, it's been solid. I do think the poly satin fabric I used for the cushions would have also been a great option, it's a little more opaque so would block light better than the duck canvas.
LOL - you listed the entire build list sans the flooring. I appreciate this video - gave me the courage to just do it mostly myself - save me thousands of dollars. Thank you.
The foam absorbs the impact well. I've had a couple of balls get caught behind the top cushion, but I just stick a club up there and they fall out. Nothing has gone all the way through the corners.
I do, as long as you get at least 1 inch thick EMT. If you are worried about sagging, you could also run some 3/4 or 1/2 inch EMT through the middle of the 1 inch pipe to help bridge the connection, if that makes sense.
@buildsbymaz question, when you said to cut your enclosure frame 3 inches bigger than your impact screen, does that mean the dimensions of your enclosure are 12.5feet wide and 9.5feet tall ?
Hey man sorry, I told you wrong in my last comment. The width only needs to be 3 inches wider total than the screen. So for your 10 ft wide screen, make it 10 ft 3 inches wide (measured from the insides of the EMT pipes). The height just needs to be 1.5 inches taller since the bottom of the screen will go all the way to the floor.

@@StickyPickle-w4i Glad to hear it. You'll enjoy the new sim room I'm sure!
Amazing video sir ! Eagerly waiting for the Part 2.
Thanks! Part 2 will be out next weekend.
Hey, great video. What width of screen did you get for your 12ft enclosure? And what width should I get if I’m making mine 10 feet wide?
The screen width is the same width as the enclosure, so my screen is 12 ft wide, and you should get a 10 ft wide screen. Let me know if I am misunderstanding your question.
@@buildsbymaz At 10:11 you say that the frame should be 3 inches wider than the width of my impact screen. So does that mean I should cut my frame to 10'3" for a 10 ft wide impact screen?
@@Cesar-zb6zf Yes that's exactly right.
I have a projector, how did you mount that in relation to the enclosure?
Hey go to about 10:30 in my second video here- th-cam.com/video/OdptnccvFUA/w-d-xo.html
That's where I start talking about projectors, and I explain in detail how you should set it up with your enclosure. Hope this helps
Well done mate
Thank you!
Quick question: can I get a 4m/12ft long pipe? Or would you recommend getting 2x 2m/6ft and have a joiner in the middle for extra rigidity?
I think a 12ft pipe would be stronger actually, but 10ft was the longest I could find at a local hardware store.
Lace tightening was a great idea
Thanks!
use a serrated knife to cut through foam easier.
@@buildsbymaz thanks for the reply!
LOL - you listed the entire build list sans the flooring. I appreciate this video - gave me the courage to just do it mostly myself - save me thousands of dollars. Thank you.
Hey John, check out part 2 of this video on my channel- I have the flooring listed out as well as all the other parts of the simulator. Best of luck
@@buildsbymaz Thanks Maz - turns out those were the exact ones I purchased - Just in 1". Thanks again for the build.
Really nice job!
Thank you!
I’ve tried it out and it’s awesome!
Just curious if after using the screen for a while if your noticing any fraying or pulling around the grommets?
None at all so far
great video. nice job.
U r awesome and a perfectionist. Gonna try making this.❤
From India.🎉
Thank you and good luck!
What distance is the ball to screen? Is 8 feet enough in your opinion?
8 feet is the recommended minimum. If you can get more like 10, that would be even better.
I can make 10 happen. Thanks @@buildsbymaz
I’ll be interested to see how the grommets hold up without support
How does the foam handle a shank? Have you had any balls find their way through the corners?
The foam absorbs the impact well. I've had a couple of balls get caught behind the top cushion, but I just stick a club up there and they fall out. Nothing has gone all the way through the corners.
You can use a heat gun to remove your pricing stickers
This could not have come at a better time for me, so thanks
No problem. Just in time for winter!
@@buildsbymaz Right you are, looking forward to part 2
Great video thanks!!!
You're very welcome
Exceptional video.
Thank you sir!
Wow 300 yard drive 😮
Do you think this framing would be conducive to a frame mounted projector?
@@buildsbymaz oh perfect got it! no problem at all! Thank you for the help!
Hey man ! Did you ever cut the bottom like the sides with bungees?
Hey sorry I'm not sure I understand. Cut the bottom of what exactly?
@ the bottom of the screen. Similar to the sides with tension and a small gap!
@@JoeHartREI just tucked it under and attached it with the eye bolts. Check out 10:40 and 18:30 in the video.
Did you havw to secure the sim enclosure to the ground / walls?
Nope! It's plenty sturdy on it's own, it won't move at all just from hitting balls at it.
The screensot shows $758 but that doesn;t include the $2k launch monitor or the projector . What is the projector you use?
The $758 is just for the enclosure, but I have another video coming out next weekend that will include everything needed for a simulator with a price breakdown for each item. My projector is the Optoma GT1080Darbee.
How did you attach the top portion of the duck canvas?
The same way I did the sides - I put grommets in the front and then ran the string in a zig zag pattern attaching it to the top back EMT pipe.
@@buildsbymazthanks for the quick reply!
How about the projector and Pc you are using
Check our part 2 of this video on my channel - it covers everything needed for this setup including projector details and setup. The PC was built for me by a friend.
How much do you have in the whole setup. Enclosure, monitor, projector etc. everything?
If I have to wait for part 2 to a see this question I’m good with that. Can’t wait lol
@@JStubbsGolfs I haven't actually added it all together yet, but I know it's under $5k (including launch monitor). I will definitely have an exact answer for you in part 2 though!
How did you get the impact screen for $230? When i look at the website, it is $297 for the 10' x 12' option, just wondering.
I think there was a sale going on when I bought it. There may be a black Friday sale happening if you are able to wait a couple of weeks
shoot ok thanks so much! And also I noticed the duck canvas was out of stock… do you know anywhere else I could get the same stuff? If not it’s fine but thanks!
@@cavettbird1059 You can try Hobby Lobby or maybe a local craft store. One of those should have it.
use heatgun to get stickers out
A heat gun will also help remove those price stickers
use a heatgun/hairdryer for the stickers
Definitely should have done that, good idea.
Incredible
Did you use spectrum golf website for your screen? I used your link and purchased. I’m not hearing anything from them. No email confirmation. No phone calls answered and no email replies.
Hey yes I did order directly from the website that I linked to. You should get an order confirmation, I just checked my email and it came from optishotgolfsimulator@gmail.com.
Use a heat gun or hair blower to get the stickers off.
Dont get the mevo plus. Its terrible at reading shorter chips and putts. Go with the uneekor eye mini light
I don't do any putting on my simulator, but I have never had problems chipping with the Mevo, even doing short 2 or 3 yard chips.
pricing stickers. use a heat gun and they peel right off
Using a heat gun on the sticky side of the Velcro will make it stick much easier
Doesn’t take much just until you see it start to change color
@@michaelbrock7710 good tip!
Man I wish my garage was this tall
Great job. But that is a LOT of work and preparation for the average guy!
Worth it though!
Iron on velcro strips
Im realising there are two types of people in this world. People who love grommets and people who dont know what they are.
Haha yes they really are great. The star of this build!
If I had a dollar for every time you said 'Grommet,' I'd be booking a first-class trip by now!
Haha yes they got used a lot
