The only way I know its Friday. A man with an energy drink is playing old Nintendo games whilst ranking them with pure science.
Today is Friday in California.
Basically Einstein ranking NES games.
@@furrymessiahSHOOT! *blam*
This series is actually kind of important documentation lol
yeh, jeff the historian educating the gaming world
Existential crisis, brought to you by "The Black Bass"
that's how i imagine Shaggy 2 Dope looked like as a child
Kid Klown totally has a spot at The Gathering
Kid Klown has that "colorized Game Boy port" look for some reason...
22 eps deep, in it for the long haul.
This series is incredibly entertaining to watch. Thanks Jeff.
The Black Bass USA perfectly captures the lack of excitement of real fishing.
I know that it was an old Russian song, but was jarring hearing the Tetris theme played during a sex scene on 'The Americans'.
Also, this series of yours has inspired me to do something similar with my PC Engine "collection"...I don't stream or anything, I just play, rank, and do my best Jeff Gerstmann impression while folks in the next room wonder why I'm talking to myself.
Get Danny O'Dwyer in for the Amiga stream, he'll look after you 👍
Tetris Music 3 is giving "core memory unlocked" levels of nostalgia. I love this ranking project for that. Honestly, I forgot I even played many of the Nintendo games so thanks for another awesome reminder.
I was raised in a music 3, level 5 to start house. Mom was a Tetris addict… and passed said addiction on to me.
Seeing "The Black Bass" pop up here made me recall how I am looking forward to seeing the notably superior "The Blue Marlin" make an appearance...
Kid Klown is how I imagine Hell is, just playing that game over and over again until the end of time. And after time ends you have to play Black Bass USA to crush you even more
Governing at Night is my favorite R.E.M song.
I'm so glad you dug Krazy Kreatures! I grew up in a small town with a gas station that sold only these unlicensed games, and I always thought this was the best one. These unlicensed games, whether they were good or not, always felt surreal.
So, basically, you lose when you run out of matches during the "filling" portion of the stage. The board won't stop filling until you make the required number of matches (the number that counts down on the bottom left). Once you knock that down to zero, it is replaced with the foot tapping timer and the board stops filling.
Now you need to play the unlicensed Dudes with Attitudes!
1:19:23 'i do my best governing at night' lmfao
Loving this series Jeff!
Funny Story, I did my own ranked list videos on twitch late last year, specifically ranking different console versions of Tetris. When factoring in differences in ruleset, aesthetics, hardware, and heavily favouring tight controls, the winner wound up being Tetris DX for the GBC.
Yeah Tetris DX and Tetris DS are faves
i'm just here for the good ol' ████ shirt. Tetris is a plus
I've never heard of Krazy Kreatures before now, and I gotta say, I think it's a really neat thing. I would have enjoyed this. I especially liked the animations of everything. Just a neat little game.
Night Mayor is no Mr. Magic
The fuel orbs in Roadblasters makes Kramer’s dream of big balls of oil a reality in the future
Let me say right now, that Tetris is not okay. This is a Puyo Puyo household.
Tetris Effect is AMAZING.
Playing on the Quest 3 is dope as hell
What a bizarre batch of games this was. Excluding Tetris, of course. That version of Tetris is the one I played the most growing up and it's still my favorite version of it. Raid On Bungeling Bay and RoadBlasters both passed me by like Pharcyde when I was a kiddo, but they both seem fun too. I'll have to load them up in RetroArch myself one of these days. And while I did play The Black Bass way back when, I don't think I managed to catch a fish at all. Was nice to see it actually happen (even if it was too small).
These Fridays are getting Professional, and I must say I kinda like it. But... are they better than Dynowarz: Destruction of Spondylus?
I kinda figured maybe you would talk more about comparing Raid on Bungling Bay to the C64 version. Frankly, as an Atari 8-bit owner, I'd always assumed it was pretty good, as I always saw it advertised and talked about frequently in that shared space, so I wondered if this was just a poor port or representative.
Roadblasters arcade is definitely more fun, if also more challenging. You definitely gotta get the right upgrades and it's a little harder to drive fast, hit enough fuel bubbles, and not hit other things, so that you make it to the end of the level before running out of gas. It definitely is easier to miss the cars and you don't seem to run out of gas as quickly in the NES version.
That offhand comment about the first WarioWare is my actual opinion. Yes, the first WarioWare IS the best game ever made.
Psycho Pinball on Mega Drive ain't got nothing on the MS-DOS version! Great show of taste Mr. Gerstmann.
Spectrum Holobyte's DOS Tetris with Soviet propaganda art always was my jam, despite the lack of music
The Black Bass USA made me miss Kid Klown's soundtrack. Holy _fuck_
"let's not get crazy", says the crazy man
I've been playing the original WarioWare recently with my daughter (6) and can confirm: it is definitely the best game ever made. But Tetris is good too.
Watching these on TH-cam and being quite a bit behind, my thought seeing this thumbnail was "the Kid Klown game for SNES is great, how bad can the NES one be?" Real bad, it turns out.
I'll give Kid Klown some credit, when the shrill sound effects aren't overlapping the music, some of those tunes were pretty good. The title screen and stage select songs were classic kemco chiptunes
Bad music is so easy to come by so I feel like good music alone almost puts a game near the middle at least
It ain't no Yoshi's Cookie.
Never played Raid on Bungling Bay before, even though I have a copy of it :P. Pretty cool though looks like an 8 bit version of the EA Strike games.
I'm so proud of Luigi for making a Yoshi
Bungeling bay seems like a cool game, never heard of it
Was just playing Yoshi 2 nights ago. Simple. Like it more than Yoshi's Cookie. I quickly got like 10 cheevos. And yes 2 player mode you did fling extra trouble over to the 2nd player for like 3 rounds.
A banner week for games with the letter 'K' replacing the letter 'C'!!!
So what you're saying is: they broke Tetris.
Wait, so Yoshi is a 1991 NES game when 1990 is when Super Mario World came out on the SNES. How long were NES games still coming out after the launch of the SNES?
The NES Tetris is a fine 'classic' version of the game. There is really nothing wrong with it. But Tetris just feels more at home on the GameBoy. Tetris is perfect for handheld devices.
Yoshi is certainly no Yoshi's Cookie
A klown's gotta do what a klown's gotta do
i always thought the broderbund logo looked like a face
I swear I played a game super similar to roadblasters. Fuel orbs, shooting, similar flashing grid at the end. But this UI and overall style seems unfamiliar to me.
Jeff for the real win.❤❤❤
It's a shame Hebereke/Ufouria never came out in the US so it's not eligible. I bet it would end up pretty high on the list.
it really doesn't feel like the name of that game variation in the Stuff? menu was an accident when the main game title has the first two K's.
The Helicopter rotates smoother than Tetris and you rated it lower??? Your Science is Flawed, Sir!
Man I want Kid Klown but its astronomical in price. The Mickey Mouse game it's a reskin of for the Famicom is at least human in price
Fuuuuck, I forgot about Black Bass USA, I dunno why I played a lot of it as a kid...but I did. I must have put it out of my memory but man it all came flooding back when I saw you boot that shit up. Fuck was wrong with me
It's about time DICE stopped messing around with Battlefield and went back to pinball.
I had Yoshi on the GameBoy and I kinda liked it there, but it more or less is the same game as the NES version.
Krazy Kreatures gives me an Apple ][ vibe. The visual presentation reminds me of Number Munchers in a way. But I think Number Muchers is a better game overall.
Back to back shrill awful audio in Kid Klown and Black Bass. Super big headache.
Could you imagine Black Bass with Tim Follin's audio? I think this game stays bad but somewhat tolerable for a fishing sim.
Typo on the title for game 2, "Raind"
This just hit me: night mayor = nightmare
man can't wait for you to eventually do SNES games for science and piss off a LOT of yoshi's island fans lol
1:29:00 sounds like the battletoads rat race song
Man I loved Raid on Bungling Bay for c64. Had no idea Nintendo had a version too. Not quite as good as c64 version. Sounds are pretty bad. Still pretty good though.
Yoshi's probably alright.
Good for younger kids to be honest.
It still bothers me that it's "Spondylous" and not "Spondylus" on the list. 😅
I didn't watch all the Kid Klown segment so it may have been mentioned, but I think that game was a Mickey Mouse game in Japan.
What was it with Kemco and IP shenanigans with their games between regions? Ironically they created an original IP for the west with this one.
My recollection of Game Boy Tetris is that it's basically exactly like this NES version. Maybe it "felt" better on GB or something, but I'm not sure where Jeff is seemingly drawing such a distinction between the two.
I think most of the love for GB Tetris came from the 2-player simultaneous mode and being able to stack lines on the opponent.
the only gameplay differences I can think of are the reduced stack height, the i piece rotating to the left, and maybe the randomizer?
gameboy tetris has the correct music, which i just learned right now from googling it was originally russian folk music
Tetris the Grand Master rules, but Ace... I dunno
In japan kid klown is actually a mickey mouse game.
But is Hexic better than DYNOWARZ: DESTRUCTION OF SPONDYLUS?
Jeff trying to drop one of his hot controversial takes, repeatedly saying that Yoshi sucks. Despite the fact that Yoshi's Island is a top five game on the SNES.
There's like 300ish North America NES games right? We're pretty far in
More like 700
More like Raid On Bunghole Bay
my god. That repetitive Bungling Bay music... I think I'm going to need mental therapy now. lol.
gameboy tetris is way more brutal, there is no delay between pieces appearing giving you even less time to react, there is 1 less row and the lock delay is shorter -
the piece RNG is also busted and isn't equal across all pieces, and it can also get stuck in loops where you get spammed with the same piece over and over.
game boy tetris is actually really rough, NES is much better.
Oh shit, it's like a mediocre Blue Max!
First off, I love this series! The way the games are seen as they are by a person who's been around + plus the familiarity of reviews is purely uncanny. Not that I have to agree though I generally see the point, for the most part.
I gotta say tho.... Strongly, strongly disagree with the Tetris dialogue. To keep it short, while giving support to my thoughts, I'll keep it brief:
- you touch on clones and the difficulty to reproduce that "feeling", it's one of the best feeling Tetris' ever. That's not always easy to do and this version completely dictates what a good Tetris is. Although not the first version, it's such a significant yet early version that this only solidifies the game moving forward.
- it's a zone out and decompressor though you def just kinda entered into this one without the same clear mindset you seemingly did with others such as SMB, Rygar, or even Kickle Cubicle
- it seems like the mind was made up prior to playing acknowledging this isn't the prime version due to updates and options future versions would include. It didn't sound like you took it for what it was.
The science and the scientist is usually very sound! Also, is your list, not mine. I just happened to strongly disagree with the scientific method this time around. 😅
I just figured out that Knight Rider on NES is a ripoff of Roadblasters.
Great stuff! Some of the worst music and sound effects I’ve ever heard in this episode.
this boring Yoshi game makes me wanna fire up Yoshi's Cookie on gameboy emulator. now that's a videogame (or at least i remember it being fun when i was like 8)
That fishing game seems MISERABLE. And this episode has contained some of the most obnoxious sounds the NES ever emitted.
this episode is full of bad sounds :(
That seems quite high for Kid Klown. That game looked and sounded pretty terrible.
clown games not fairing well so far
