      @bane2201 3 ปีที่แล้ว +52

      @jo gr I always find that so impressive. Twice in history, the prevention of World War III was the result of one person. Both times they made the right decision. Not only that, but they did it against opinions to the contrary within a collectivist society - Arkhipov didn't succumb to peer pressure, and Petrov didn't launch the nukes despite 5 nukes supposedly heading towards them. They also both knew it could hurt their careers. Their courage is honestly an inspiration to me even now, 58 years after the missile crisis and 37 years after Petrov didn't push the button.

Second, the Soviet Union did not really achieve the ability to destroy the US with nuclear weapons before 1968. In 1962, the Soviets had a handful of ICBMs launched from pads and a couple hundred bombers able to make a one-way trip to the US. The only other weapon that could threaten the US was a nuclear armed torpedo that could attack ports. In 1962, the US and Canadians not only maintained the most sophisticated early warning and air defense command system ever deployed, it was supported by hundreds of all-weather, radar and missile equipped interceptors and thousands of surface to air missiles across the US. Soviet ICBMs and IRBMs had accuracy problems, which required large, single RV warheads. Few, if any bombers would get through. The ICBMs would destroy perhaps twenty US cities. This is not insignificant and would be quite damaging. But on the other end, over a thousand SAC heavy (B-52) and medium (B-47 and B-58), supported by a hundred or so British medium bombers and a couple hundred USN and RN nuclear armed light carrier based bombers would hit the USSR. The USSR had over a thousand fighters, but most were day, point defense aircraft. They had thousands of SA-2 and SA-1 SAMs but they had to cover a much larger area than the US and Soviet tech was barely better than German WW2 sir defenses. This doesn't include the hundreds of US and NATO IRBMs and tactical missiles and a couple thousand US and NATO nuclear equipped fighter-bombers. Europe would be hit hard with the Soviet IRBMs and light and medium bombers, perhaps as hard as Germany in WW2 but with mostly nuclear weapons, though the Soviets still hadn't miniaturized their warheads or improved manufacturing processes so at this point they had far fewer bombs. But the USSR and China would cease to exist as organized societies. What would be left for the US and NATO to occupy? Mostly people and places far from the industrial, military and population heartlands. The number of weapons used would create a limited and temporary shadow and radioactive clouds and rain, but not to the extent feared by this video, which is really based on the MAD situation that arose in 1968 when both asides achieved nuclear destructive equivalence. 1962 was probably the last point in history where someone might actually fight and "win" a nuclear war.

      So while it would have been horrible disaster _in_1962_ and for people living in or near Russia, for the ones farther away things would quite possible get better than it did IRL.
      As is it's quite likely Russia, the USA, or possibly China will push the button within 50 years pretty much ending humanity. If that button had been pushed in '62 I'd say that would be extremely unlikely to happen again - a couple of 100 million dead would be a pretty strong reminder.

    • @jackschulte6185
      @jackschulte6185 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Yeah I agree. I also think it's unlikely the conflict would have escalated to a global scale.
      Recall that for much of the cold war, the Soviet military doctrine assumed that nukes were only to be used in specific circumstances. The Soviets (probably correctly) assumed that NATO was bluffing, and that "an attack against one" would not be "an attack against all." No state in Europe had any incentive to engage in a nuclear exchange with the USSR due to an attack against a fellow member. It would have been suicide. Similarly, the USSR, as stated by Michael Snyder, would have been extremely disadvantaged in an exchange with the US (even if just the US acted alone). Thinking at the time (especially for the Soviets) was that there were only two ways the nukes were to be used: (1) by a nuclear state against non-nuclear state(s) that could not retaliate in kind, or (2) by one nuclear state to defend against a full-scale attack by another state (nuclear or conventional).
      If the Soviets were to respond to the invasion of Cuba, it is likely that response would have been limited to an invasion of West Berlin with purely conventional forces. At worst, the Soviets may have tried to seize the whole of West Germany (or the conflict may have spilled over into the West due to more bad decisions from the Kennedys if that's the scenario we're running with). In this case, the Soviets may use a few nukes to bottleneck US troops and delay US reinforcements in Germany, but it isn't likely they would actually drop the nukes on US positions and bases, as that would be too risky and could invoke full-scale US retaliation. The Soviets assumed that Poland would possibly fall to a similar nuclear fate by US / NATO bombing, as the open Polish plains were the best land route into Western Europe from the East, and the Soviets decided in the early 1950s that such a contingency was not worth reacting with a full nuclear exchange. NATO at this point, I suspect, would have fallen apart for the reasons outlined above. None of the NATO partners would have backed further escalation and confirmed the utter destruction of the European continent with an all-out nuclear exchange. "A nuke for a nuke" is not a feasible policy. NATO states would have likely began negotiations to resolve the crisis (unilaterally or as a whole), even if the Kennedys were pushing for total war against the Warsaw Pact. Even in our timeline, President Diefenbaker of Canada was quite impatient with Kennedy when the Cuban Missile Crisis had emerged, as he felt that he was not kept sufficiently informed by the Americans and that the Kennedys were prodding the world towards war without appropriately consulting other world leaders.
      Meanwhile, in the Western Hemisphere, I find it hard to believe that the 100 tactical nukes deployed there would have actually been useful to the Cubans, who didn't really have a delivery method for them in 1962. Cuban troops hadn't even been trained how to use them as of their withdrawal in late 1962. As a nuclear state fighting for its survival, Casto's regime **could** have been willing to use these devices under the circumstances, but it's really not likely that they had the ability. Additionally, the Cubans would have been probably acting alone, as the USSR would have likely opposed the Cubans making last-ditch nuclear attacks which would jeopardizing global stability and condemn the 60,000 Soviet soldiers stationed there to their deaths. Perhaps Cuban nukes could have been used to delay US advances by blocking the mountainous passes of Cuba and creating fallout. Or perhaps they would have been used as suicide devices, left behind with a small number of Cuban troops for US troops overrun, then detonated to inflict casualties on US personnel. However, the idea that they would rain down on advancing US forces is unlikely, and detonation of the weapons on Cuban soil is at best a double edged sword. The single IRBM that was ready posed a significant threat if not eliminated by US air attacks, and may very well have been launched at any city on the Eastern seaboard including DC. If time had been provided for a buildup of US military personnel in advance of the invasion, perhaps there could have even been a handful of IRBMs in operation. But even then, I find it unlikely that the US would have chose to escalate with a full-scale nuclear exchange with the Soviets, as the US would have sustained additional losses (several orders of magnitude greater) in an all-out exchange. It is most likely the US would have detonated its own devices only on Cuba in such an event. Furthermore, from the Cuban perspective, none of its potential nuclear options would do anything to guarantee the survival of the Cuban regime; if anything they would hasten it, and the Americans would use their arsenal to level what remained of the island. To ensure their survival, the Cubans would have been far better served to attempt to work out a deal with the US (and the USSR) rather than use its nuclear weapons. And, again, even if an exchange occurred in Cuba, the Soviets we not going to be eager to bomb the USA in Castro's defense, because the Soviets themselves would also fear US retaliation (it wasn't worth the price of a US nuclear attack on the USSR, and it wouldn't change Cuba's fate).
      In short, a peaceful deal, whether initiated by Kennedy or any of the other parties involved, was the most logical outcome. Everyone had little to gain from a nuclear exchange of any magnitude, with nearly everything to lose. This would only become more apparent the more nuclear weapons were used. Conflict, if initiated, would have been short, limited in scope and scale, with nuclear exchange only likely in Cuba, Germany, perhaps Poland, and (at the very worst) a few Eastern US cities. While it is frequently heralded as the time the world almost ended, I have always had trouble believing that this was a reasonable possibility. It was a serious situation, but not nearly as grave as it is often portrayed. It gets a lot of attention largely because Kennedy was basically martyred 13 months later, but JFK's role in the whole thing I believe is very frequently exaggerated, and certainly not the only thing that prevented complete nuclear annihilation.

      And let's not forget the economic impact on this, economic sistems on the region will need to be reworked as dollar is now worthless, and all the money businessmen and corrupt politicians had in countries like Switzerland is now gone.
      The industry will need to be rebuilt in order to start producing what can't be imported anymore, and I can tell you, people will revolt, they've revolted for less.
      However, if governments manage to keep things stable (Which I can see happening, especially in countries like Chile, Argentina or Brazil), in 20 years or so life here won't be any different from today, perhaps even better.

Let’s look at the facts shall we? The 2 issues that currently trouble the USA in this context are ISIS and North Korea. Neither of these exist because of Trump, and both grew stronger under Obama’s watch.
      So you ask, what has Trump done about these threats? Has he launched the nukes? Sent the invasion force? Declared War?
      The answer is No. ISIS pretty much no longer exists, due to a much needed aggressive strategy from the White House. North Korea is another matter all together. Trump has two choices, ignore them, like the useless Obama did, and let them grow stronger, or oppose their activities with the strongest means possible outside of War. Thankfully, Trump Chose the later.
      Do some independent research before making ridiculous comments. Whenever anybody mentions a past US president, there is always some sad little snivelling cunt, who can’t resist being like “Trump is a bad man......my my my feelings are hurt” 😭

    Thanks for the video. I have to say I have a different view on a possible 'nuclear war in 1962' thing. While Wikipedia isn't the greatest 'source', at least the 'US-Soviet Relations' section of en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuban_Missile_Crisis has some footnotes.
    Yes, the Soviets had warheads, but in 1962 the lacked the ability to deliver them to the US. The Soviets had maybe up to 75 ICBMs - the same rockets that launched Sputnik (the R-7). R-7s take many hours to prep for launch.
    In your scenario, within minutes of the Soviets using tactical nukes against a US force invading Cuba, the US would use submarine-launched Polaris missiles (the US had 9 Polaris subs - each with 16 warheads - in commission by Oct 1962; 2 or 3 would be on patrol) and bombers to target Soviet R-7, tactical missile and bomber bases as well as tactical nukes to target any operational nukes in Cuba.
    Some Soviet warheads would get through to America: it depends on how quickly after Soviet nukes war used against the invasion force in Cuba Kennedy decides to go full nuclear. If that decision-making time is measured in minutes, rather than hours or days, some millions of Americans - and more Western Europeans - would die, but not 100 million Americans.
    In 1962, the US arsenal was much, much larger than the USSR's and could be much more effectively delivered.
    BTW, I'm not arguing the US 'should' have invaded Cuba or gone full nuclear: the late 50s and early 60s was simply an era in which US nuclear delivery capability comprehensively outmatched the USSR's. The Cuban Missile Crisis was a huge risk - by Khrushchev.

Furthermore, by this point too many resources had be committed to simply 'stop' without HUGE uproar. Many wanted to keep fighting. Both of you are incorrect, the war would've lasted approximately two years longer, with the only Axis power still existing being the Japanese imperials. We had a choice, to drop the bombs in an attempt to show Tojo, the Japanese emperor, that we could easily destroy the entire nation if given the choice. Most Americans were tired of fighting in an already intense war, so the bombs were dropped instead of keeping the war alive. If nuclear technology did not exist at this particular time, we would have invaded the main islands of Japan and fight until Tojo was either killed or captured. Neither him, nor his people were willing to give up and were unwilling to accept defeat, an example of this being a small group of about five Japanese soldiers being trapped in the Philippines who would continue to kill people who wandered near their campsite in the wilderness for nearly 20 years, and whenever someone would try to tell them that Japan surrendered, it would be thought to have been a trick by the allies to get the men to surrender. Millions more would end up dead as result, and is an even worse scenario than the droppings of the two bombs.

    I absolutely LOVE the feel of this one. VERY effective in bringing across the horror of the situation.
    And the situation was FAR worse then we ever realized at the time: look up the "Intruder in Duluth" incident (October 26 1962, while we were at DEFCON III for the crisis) where, due to a wrongly wired intruder alarm, bombers were actually scrambled to initiate a nuclear bombing run on Russia. It was only discovered JUST AS THE PLANES WERE ON THE RUNWAY ABOUT TO TAKE OFF, and standard procedure was to maintain radio silence while on this mission - only the command center sending a car out to literally chase the lead plane down saved the world.
