Every time I hear that glitch story, I feel like Petrov is the greatest hero mankind has ever had.
Happy Petrov day.
Well he did save most of us from nuclear destruction
dani sechzehn I think of war games
MarzK423 Slav actually comes from a Slavic word, "slovo" meaning "word". They called each other Slavs, because they could understand each other and had the same language (at least in the start). Similar in many Slavic languages the word for German; Niemcy is from the word "nyem" meaning "deaf". This is because they couldn't understand the Germans.
To further prove my point, the Latin word for slave is completely different. The Latin word for slave is servus also meaning servant..
Game2 Game2 I am a German, who took six years of Latin in school, and had been living in St Petersburg for three years, and your explanation was absolutely perfect.
Thank you Russian dude for saving us

Doesn't matter much now though. As Russia as at a tipping point, Putin is pissed as hell and Hillary and Biden are threatening _actual_ military action against Russia if there is a cyberattack against the US that they believe came from Russia. Soo. Yeah.

The earth WOULD have become a living HELL if Petrov didn’t use his instincts.
It wouldn't, his role has been overly exaggerated in the West, pretending you admire Petrov while in actuality spitting on Russia. There was a whole chain of command, someone would notice "Americans wouldn't launch only four nukes on us, and this system is new and still in the beta phase"
@Robert Ortiz-Wilson Petrov didn't obey the chain of command at that time, so he was fired from the military. Though any suspicious launch against USSR would be taken seriously as it was during Reagan's Anti Communist policy, and that 'empire of evil' which where world tension skyrocket.
and it’s not a living hell now?? 😂
@@sockaccount8116 I agree. Even If Petrov had been a complete morron yelling "the capitalists are nuking us!!", the strategic command would have asked for a confirmation beyond reasonable doubt. Especially With just 4 warheads without a clear target.
@Robert Ortiz-Wilson Well, we do know that Petrov simply reported on what he saw on his screen : 4 icbm incomming ! then he added what everybody else whould have thought : It has to be a mistake.
And we know that it was enough for the strategic command to standby, and eventually dismiss the whole thing. Ultimately it was up to them and USSR officials usually cared little for what a low ranking officer had to say ! Petrov's instinct would be secundary.
And I still don't answer your question 😅 but that makes sense...
Wow, Petrov is probably the greatest hero to ever walk the face of the earth...

Stanislav Petrov is the greatest unspoken hero and the greatest hero in general, he saved the world *TWICE* but yet he isn't respected as much as he should, absolutely ridiculous
Western history books would never portray a soviet officer as a hero even if they are.
It’s not even a matter of Western books refusing to portray a soviet hero. Even in his own country Petrov was ostracized and faded into obscurity before death.
you confuse stanislav petrov with vasili arkhipov. He was the one during the cuban missile crisis, petrov was the one in 1983
George W Bush Did Pizzagate Yep you’re right. Which makes it marginally worse when you consider his was the only vote required to stop the missiles from firing. That sub had already decided nuclear war was at hand and decided to fire its payload without first consulting Moscow. (Which I’m sure you know this is just for other people who might read it.)
america was a asshole so they didn't include him.
Why isn't Stanislav Petrov in our history books? He saved everyones life

Don't forget that in September 1983, there was also the Korean Air Lines Flight 007 shootdown incident, where a civilian airliner trespassed (accidentally?) into Soviet military airspace TWICE, and in the end, the Soviet pilot that was sent up to intercept the plane was eventually ordered to shoot it down... which he did, killing everyone on board.
That event damn near pushed the U.S. and USSR into a war... aside from the alternate scenario that was described in this video.
No pilot is stupid enough to fly into no flying areas TWICE. Shooting it down was justified as there maybe a squad of US operatives instead of passengers which you never know until the body bags are pulled out of the wreckage

Petorv rationale was that America wouldn't launch one, two or three missiles. From a strategic point that's illogical. So he gambled that the system, which was brand new, was defective. And it was. It was a reflection form the sun that gave the impression of a launch. Neither America nor the Soviet Union would ever launch one or two missiles. It would always be an full scale launch to overwhelm your opponent.
Nah not always depending on your objective and opponent

4:24 I grew up in the 80's and sirens like this would go off in my town for compartively regular emergencies (fire, medical). But it was always in the back of my mind that it could mean a scenario portayed in "The Morning After."
If I remember correctly, Petrov thought it was ridiculous that an attack on Russia would use so few missiles. I think the radar indicated the missiles came from a direction that didn't make sense. I also think there were other layers of detection you would wait for confirmation from. 1983 was also the same year the NATO ran the Able-Archer military exercise that the Russians feared was a pretense for an actual attack so I believe the Russians showed an amazing amount of restraint that year.
4:41 that is just utterly terrifying. I can't imagine...

4:30 I legit got chills all over my body. Good sound design and great video overall.
David Boucard The explosion sounds are the only fake thing in this. The siren and *kkrrr* sounds are actual sounds prerecorded and will actually sound
Ephjoe Kwon That's what gave me chills. I imagined if all the taxi cabs, subway cars, and chatter in the streets were suddenly engulfed by the sound of that wailing siren and it was too late to leave the city.
Ephjoe Kwon The Krrr isn't that scary, since it happens during any moderate flood.
In some places this siren might be more common. In peaceful countries where there is also very little extreme weather we never hear this siren. The only place we hear it is in war movies. That makes it sound much more scary to us.
maybe to you since it only means a flood to you, but to other people it tends to mean tornado or hurricane
This one been hittin hard as of late

I'm onto you, Skynet.
