    I'm glad they kept Capone in the dark. His influence and power is all you need to see. You know the name, you don't need to see the man.

      This may seem like an insane comparison but by never seeing him he’s like the Emperor in A New Hope. You don’t need to see him because the movie assures you just how menacing he is.

      Good point. And, really, if you're going to have Capone in the movie, he surely needs more than one scene, but that, as you say, would make Rooney seem less powerful. I do, however, feel for the actor playing Capone here. You think you're in the film--and then you're not.

    What's almost always forgotten about Capone is how young he was when he came to power. When he took over from Torrio in 1925 he was only 25 years old and he had already been with Torrio for about 7 years even by then. He should be about 31 in this movie. Not as old as he is played here or certainly the older guy that DeNiro played him as in The Untouchables. But even at his peak he was never half as powerful as the New York bosses. They mostly considered him a publicity seeking 'gavone'.

    I like that Capone wasn't in the movie, but instead was simply considered to be so domineering and powerful that you didn't even need to see him in order to fear his name. Plus there's a reason Capone was able to stay out of prison for so long. The guy knew how to operate behind the scenes. So in cases like this, he would make sure never to be seen personally ordering the hits, he'd be secretly directing others to do in order to ensure they aren't connected to him. So it makes perfect sense not to see his involvement.

    The reason this scene was cut is that it makes Jude Laws murder of Sullivan at the end seem less personal. If he's been dispatched by Capone he will get the job done, even if Paul Newman was killed. Without it, it implies Newman hired Law, and thus, after his death, Law's continued pursuit is purely out of vengeance for his face. Makes it more interesting than just Capone getting payback. Granted, Tuccis cooperation implies that capone isn;t after him anymore- but that makes it even more confusing- capone would never let Sulivans crimes slide, even after newmans death.

    I personally think they could have left it, IF they had added 1-2 very short scenes of al being being frustrated and thinking about whether Connor is worth it. Jude Law actually looks too good in this scene.. The had him more ragged out with deteriorating makeup in his other scenes, and here he looks too pretty like his real self. I like the movie very much, and think it’s a top 20 soundtrack of all time in terms of atmosphere. I always wanted a more satisfying kill of Conner, however.

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. It's better that Capone was simplly an ominous and ever-present evil lurking behind the scenes. Something that you couldn't see, but still had reason to fear. Kind of like Sauron in the lord of the rings movies. Plus there's a reason Capone was able to stay out of prison for so long. He knew how to keep himself publicly disconnected from his most serious crimes. So it makes sense we don't see him ordering the hits, but instead just see his underlings doing it, because that's how Capone operated.
      As for the Connor kill, I like how it wasn't satisfying. I think that was deliberate on the part of the director. The point is that after all the atrocities Sullivan experienced, carried out, and witnessed, by the time he finally gets his revenge for them, it's really not a source of pleasure or satisfaction at all. It's just something that needed to be done, like doing your taxes. It shouldn't have been satisfying, because after everything Sullivan did and suffered through, nothing left in life for him was satisfying, nothing except his son.

    This is(as far as I'm informed) exactly how Capone acted. And at this stage in his career, as the movie depicts, he was literally the most powerful single mob figure on this side of the pond. Mario Puzo writes fiction. These gangsters weren't college educated conservatoires. They were power grabbing street educated mafiosi.

    Yea, good decision to cut this film. It goes against the mood of the entire film.

  • @jundiwa

    Good thing this scene was cut from the film because it was not believable. I always thought that gangland bosses do not communicate directly to hitmen / soldiers, they have layers of people to do that for them in order to insulate themselves from legal complications.

    @hammerogod Capone was actually a real funny stand up guy, he wasent the evil strict dickhead guy most movies played him out to be. I mean yea he was the boss he was brutal but besides his mob ways outside of his buisness Al Capone was actually a guy you could have a beer and joke around with, he was a people person, he really only hurt other mobsters...

    @coupycoupon maybe not during capone's time but later when the chicago outfit started skimming the casinos and stuff in vegas during the 60's and 70's they were more powerful than all the 5 families of new york put together

    • @dins5066
      @dins5066 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No they weren't. The outfit was never as powerful as the New York syndicate. Lucky Luciano had more control of Vegas than the Chicago outfit in Capones day and the Gambinos in the 60's and 70's

    Why the hell did not they keep it in the orignal move? It is better than most of the stuff there, and the movie itself was still pretty good! But this scene is one class higher. You know why? It is LIVELY. The movie was rather stiff and depressing. It would look much better with this scene.

    • @Sidious82
      @Sidious82 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because this scene makes Mr. Rooney look weak and submissive. In the final cut, we only know about Al Capone from the last phone call between Sullivan and Nitti, and yet with just that we know he's in command. Without this scene, Mr. Rooney and Frank Nitti look very powerful. With it, not that much. So I think that's the main reason why it didn't make the cut.
