      I'm honestly shocked that you paid $200 for this in the state that it was in, sure it's lovely now, but you had to put in a lot of work to get it there

      My grandmother had the entire dining set. Buffett, table w/additional leaves, 6 chairs. My sister has it now!💖

    Most of the time, when Art Deco pieces were brand new, the wood grain was very vibrant and holographic. You notice that with Before & After photos of the Queen Mary in particular. But it darkens over time. So while the oil tone is different from the French polish look it probably had originally, I think it probably closely resembles its original look! It's beautiful!! Art Deco pieces are so rare and to see you sympathetically restoring it is very heartwarming.

    I’m stumped as to how anyone could think the shellac finish of that period is superior to the one you did. All that wood grain hidden for decades. There is no value to a finish that detracts from the beauty of the piece. Beautiful work as always.

    • @generessler6282
      @generessler6282 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +49

      Shellac is a beautiful, classical finish that can be either transparent or subtly tinted. For example check out many pieces on exhibit in the Met in New York. I'm sure the original piece was stunning when new. But when abused via liquid and sun exposure along with dust, it can cloud as here. It's also not as hard as modern varnishes, so accumulated fine scratches impart a haze. With all those flaws, a good shellac finish is still more durable than the oil used here, which will need periodic renewal forever. Finishes - as everything in life - have advantages and disadvantages.

      I wonder how you think Shellack looked in the 1940’s. I think it was a whole different apperance than Today. But, that Aside, as usual, it is a wonderful masterpiece after refinishing! I want it!

      @KairiRatten 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      yeah, this boggles my mind that anyone would look at a dingy, old, dirty and disgusting piece of furniture, with holes in veneer and cracked finish and think "wow, nobody should ever touch this thing cause it's basically perfect!" .... no, it needs to be repaired. look at that cabinet, the front doors took my breath away when finished.

    • @Tenebarum
      @Tenebarum 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      @generessler6282 Shellac can be easily be refreshed and refinished, but it usually yellows. It is super easy to use and smooth though. Can't beat the dry time.

    That woodgrain! Looking at how it has been aligned to match on both sides of the doors so perfectly, that kind of craftmanship deserves to be shown, not hidden under some stuff, and you did it justice! Amazing!

    My first reaction when I first saw this piece was that it’s really interesting. My next reaction was that it was going to take a LOT of work. My final reaction was that Angie can fix it because she can fix anything! And when all was said and done, I was right. Once again, Angie, you’ve done a beautiful job and saved a piece of furniture from deteriorating into trash. This will find a home with someone who will be so proud to own it and display it. Thank you for what you do and sharing it!💕

    I'm with you on the wood grain issue. Why would anyone cover it in a dark shellac when you can let it be a beautiful part of the piece. I love what you did with this item, really brought it back to life. Great job! Thinking maybe you need to invest in some kind of air filtration system for the fumes. Terrific video - I couldn't wait to see the reveal.

    You are a very talented artist, and the passion that you have for the beauty of wood comes out in your spectacular pieces. The goal of a good makeup artist wouldn't be to just put a mask over a person's face. They would use their skills to enhance the beauty that is already there. And that is what you do. You enhance the natural beauty that is already there in the wood. Your pieces are all jaw dropping, and it is a pleasure to see you take such great care and tenderness to give these pieces new life.

    15:55 Tighten the clamping mechanism on the fence to keep the fence stationary (make sure tighten the nut underneath the thumb release too-My husband is a GC).
    Also, you're using the wrong blade for ripping. You want to use a (minimum) 48 tooth blade with a carbide tip.
    All purpose good blades are Irwin, Marathon, and Freud.
    Thanks for the detail you give in your videos. I am an amateur furniture restorer and find that you and I do things similarly - me with "Mr. Know it all" over my shoulder!

    • @TranscendFurnitureGallery
      @TranscendFurnitureGallery  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The blade on it is a general purpose blade that came with it- it’s ok for multiple uses, including ripping but it’s more of a construction grade thing. For finer work, I should be using a dedicated ripping blade, yes.
      I’ve made all the adjustments recommended but still have issues. After doing a ton of research, I discovered many others having the same problem with that style of fence, so tightening isn’t helping. Since this video, I gave up and sold that one to someone who already had one (and knows its issues) and got the dewalt one with the rack and pinion fence and omg what a difference. So much better!

    Your instincts throughout the restoration of this piece were other-worldly. You were right on the money to not cover up that stunning pattern on the veneer. Same with how you applied the veneer to the sides with the grain running horizontally instead of vertically. The effect looks like a continuation of the grain on each of the curved side doors. This could be a museum piece, it's so spectacularly beautiful.
    And you built your own jigs and power tool attachments while you were at it!! #awestruck I'm running out of superlatives!!

      Haha, that’s sweet of you to say, and you’re very right. Often when I’m filming, I’m mouthing roughly what I expect I would say in the voiceover, so that my hand movements (mostly) line up. People often ask why I use music in the background and not shop sounds, and part of it is because all you’d hear would be me mumbling to myself, hahaha!

      @TranscendFurnitureGallery your videos are very well-produced. I love that your finished project and staging shots are always the same format with the same music. It's reliable and oddly satisfying.
      This cabinet really was spectacular. The burled wood did look like 🔥. One of your best pieces imo.

    I adore these old art deco pieces and 100% agree with your treatment of that gorgeous burled veneer. I know it's not everyone's style but I love the natural finish with the beauty of the grain shining through. Another awesome video and it turned out so pretty.

    This is beautiful and I love the 3 drawers (instead of 2). Such a useable piece in a small home. Love the 2 tones and the finish. Glad you kept the old handles! The new drawer handles too.

    Wow!! I know I’ve said this at least a dozen times before, but THIS has got to be my favourite piece so far! The front cabinet doors do, indeed, look like they are on fire; absolutely beautifully matched! The grain on the various pieces, the gorgeous handles, the scrumptious Bakelite … STUNNING! So. Much. Work. OMG!! Thank you for another fantastic video!

It would be interesting to know how much it sold for, after being purchased for $200 and having so many hours invested in it. You've created an heirloom quality piece that will be admired for generations to come.
