Guys, Eddy started playing for his dad professionally when he was about 15. He was about 12 when he started to teach himself how to play guitar. He never took any lessons or learned how to read music. He was completely self taught. He played by ear with the beautiful and AMAZING talent God gave him. I have always know Billy to be one of the sweetest, most honest and giving men I have ever met. He gave me a huge hug at Eddy's funeral and it broke my heart. Eddy meant the world to him!!
Guys, This was recorded in 84. Eddy was 22 he was born on June 20th. I was there the night this was recorded. Eddy and I had been married about a year. Watching this video still puts a lump in my throat.
My condolences sweetheart, best wishes as you travel through this life. I sure do love Billy Joe’s songs. Black rose is one of my favorites, of any song any time.
BJS is the best song writer no one heard of. I don't play many covers but Black Rose is one of them. "The devil made me do it the first time, the second time I done on my own." is the greatest hook of all time.
I new Eddy in highschool. He could play anything. he listened to Rush 2112, picked up his Les Paul, put the album on again listened again then played it. my jaw dropped, at 14 I think he and toured with Waylon and Willie. he was an incredible talent. heard Dickey Betts told Billy Joe the boy is going to put us out of business. I was very sad to hear he past away. he was a great person as well as a great guitar player. glad I got to know him when we were kids.
T'was August 14th, 1984...according to the original DVD in front of me. He would have been a few years older, but still could play that damn thing. RIP Eddy.
You know while Hollywood is in the Country Music stage, wouldnt a movie about Billy Joe be something. I would love to see it. I wonder if anyone has purchased the movie rights to his book?? Would love to see that movie.
i was privileged enough in my life to be able to spend time with billy and his family. and i wish i was able to thank them for all there kindness. but i have lost all ties to there family through death. i never even knew how lucky i was!!!
Steve, Eddy loved his dad and they had such an awesome chemistry when they played , but his heart was in playing and listening to Rock music. I remember him being sooo excited about the Delta Rebels. He got his love for rock music from his mother. She loved Rock music also, Billy never really did care for that type of music lol
Steve, Eddy loved his dad and they were so amazing together. Eddy's favorite music to listen to and play was rock. I remember he was so excited when he started playing with the delta rebels. He took after his mother. She liked rock music too. Billy never did like rock music lol
Okay have it you way nobody believes you anyway if you are who you claim to be you wouldn't be on here with a different name let alone on here with the commoners at all
i got to see billy joe and eddy the oct before eddy was gone, a small bar on the ala, fla line. i had a bad dope problem and i guess eddy the same. it was so sad the day i read that eddy was gone, i got in rehab. i hope eddy is at peace, he was one hell of a player. may god rest your soul eddy shaver. rocco
Good to know what is what Rosie. The DVD I bought said October of 79...So I guess this more like it he would have been 22. Never failed to watch Eddy. Even Saw him in Memphis back in the late 80's playing with The RT Scott Band. I even have the album they recorded "DOWN IN THE DIRT". Quite the band Eddy and Steve Ingle from Southern Creed on guitar and Memphis legend and Session musician Greg Morrow on drums. I loved the song "HOWLING AT THE MOON".
@kfc63822 The story goes that Billy was to be on the "OUTLAWS" album with Waylon, Jessie & Willie, but his wife Brenda laid the law down. She thought he'd got a wild enough reputation already without being labelled an outlaw. Happy new year to all readers.
Greg Allman gave Betts 2 of Duanne's guitars. a 56 strat & early 50's 335. Betts gave them to Eddie in the 80's. they are now locked in a safe in Willie Nelson's office.
Unfortunately i haven't Steve. Everyone who ever heard Eddy play knew how awesome his guitar playing was. Unfortunately what a lot of people didn't know is that Eddy was also able to write some great song and had a beautiful singing voice.
Billy Joe's singing and Eddy's picking, music just doesn't get any better. That is why to quote Hank Hill, "I was born in Texas, I'm going to die in Texas and in between I'm going to live in Texas.". Like they say never ask anyone if they're from Texas if they are, they'll tell you, if they're not don't embarrass them.
“They wrote it up in Rolling Stone as Black Rose being heroin, and that just wasn’t it. What it was I was referring to a girl I had, uh well, had sexual relations with when I was 12 years old. These boys talked me into the idea that if ya wanted to be a true Texan your first sexual encounter had to be with a black woman and I bought into it. So I was standing in line there with my three dollars in my hand and all of a sudden the line disappeared and there weren’t no one but me. The woman grabbed my three dollars and you’d be amazed at how fast you can become a true Texan. She said "you’re done” and that’s all there was to it.“ - Billy Joe Shaver
@SteveGaines when did Eddie start playing guitar for his father? I remember reading way back in the 1970's that Dickey Betts taught Eddie & gave him a guitar. And the guitar he is playing here looks very much like the one Betts is using in Blue Sky by the Allman Brothers, Vegas 1999 at a NASCAR show on youtube. Could be the same one and Betts got it back? The one Betts has is a 1956 hardtail with a well used & scarred neck & Eddie later used a somewhat different 57 with a trem bar.
Rosie ever hear some of that stuff Eddy did with Tony Sarno? They guy sounded just like Bon Scott. I heard they played a few frat parties around Nashville I believe it was and I would have loved to have been there. Said they played AC/DC and lots of Stones. I have one CD that was almost finished called The Thunderhawks,. Gosh, that would have been a great band...
I bought the DVD and it says October of 79...So either way Eddy was either 17 or 22...I just got through reading Billy Joe's Autobiography...He took Eddy on the Road with him when he was like 14 or 15....They were "QUITE" the family...LOL
when I seen this guy play...all I remember it was billy joe shaver on austin city lights and the guitarist was hitting notes that rivaled anyone..20 plus years ago WHATS HIS NAME? EDDIE _? what happened to him?
@boblackey1 Eddy played this guitar forever...Look at clip of him here and up until he died..This strat had no STRAP BUTTON on the horn...Eddy hooked his strap behind the body...Check it out...Even in his other videos it's the same guitar.
What a great sound he had. Straight playing ,and no phony tricks with pedals. ' Ya might want to see my "Shaver" portrait guitar on my site...... Jimmybusk dot com . 'Miss ya Eddy.,Never get tired of that live record from Smiths bar !
You are going to get kicked off of TH-cam for even saying anything about this subject. You are not one of the chosen few who can say whatever they want, ha ha!

That is an interesting story, I’d much rather have Billy Joe Shaver on that album in place of Tom Paul Glazer. That’s a no brainer trade.
Am I the last person on earth to notice the resemblance between a younger Billy Joe Shaver and a current Jeff Bridges?
A resemblance like twin brothers.
@cridermusic, his ol' Daddy sure looked happy to be there with Eddy. I agree with you 100%, excellent comment.
eddy...i wish i could have him played in person..i love is riffs
I used to sing this song at Willy's restaurant at Indian Point in Brason. the good old days.
Greg Allman gave Betts 2 of Duanne's guitars. a 56 strat & early 50's 335. Betts gave them to Eddie in the 80's. they are now locked in a safe in Willie Nelson's office.
What year was this? Billy Joe always puts on a show. An original outlaw.
Unfortunately i haven't Steve. Everyone who ever heard Eddy play knew how awesome his guitar playing was. Unfortunately what a lot of people didn't know is that Eddy was also able to write some great song and had a beautiful singing voice.
Love Outlaw Billy

I always thought it was about smack too.
I don’t know if I believe this story but I want to believe it.

@john9944 According to the tape I have it's from October of 1979....Eddy would have been 17 here.
"Lord put a handle on a simple-headed man, help me leave that Black Rose alone."
I still talk to RT Scott and he always talks about Eddy. Billy Joe said Eddy told him once..."YOUR NOT MY REAL DADDY...BILLY GIBBONS IS"...LOL
Eddy has such clean tone but it still cuts like a knife
Just the theme song. Unknown Henson Voices Early.
Google Eddy Shaver and The Thunderhawks and it tells the whole story. God Bless.
never could understand why more fame seemed to elude him
