Tony Joe White sat in with my band in Memphis in 1976 and sang Polk Salad Annie. (it was a regular song on my play list) When it got to the part during the talking intro where he said "I Said POLK......SALAD" my bass player and I played that guitar lick powerfully and in unison, and Tony Joe yelled "YEAH"! After the set he told us that he had been on the road with bands that didn't play the lick, and he was very pleased with us for remembering it. It was a great night in Memphis!
This song only proves that Tony Joe White is one of those great American originals with a sound that is simply "too damn good" to ever get played on the radio in a world full of cookie-cutter clones and puppets in the top 40.!!!!!!!!
not familiar with Polk salad Annie.. Rainy Night In Georgia.. Backwoods Preacher Man ? Home made Icrecream is one album I always heard and now own.. perfect mellow background soulful blues countryish tunes to play
Did you ever go to your friends house, where the food just ain't no good? I mean the macaroni's soggy. The peas are mush and the chicken tastes like wood. Awwww Yeahhh. Back when rap was fun, funky and funny. Can't believe I never came across Tony Joe White til seeing old videos on TH-cam this year. Love this Stuff. If Elvis ever walked into the swamp - he would have come out Tony Joe White.
One of the great, great under-appreciated American originals, Tony Joe White was a magnificent songwriter and musician of the top drawer, A-1 type caliber! Just think about it - over 31 years ago this ACL concert was so far ahead of its time, it's shocking that TJW was only known by the general public for the "Polk Salad Annie" song. So many people are so unaware of all of the monster hits by other artists like Elvis Presley, Tina Turner, Dusty Springfield, Brook Benton, Waylon Jennings, the angelic voiced Emmy Lou Harris, John Anderson, Ray Charles, Willie Nelson to name just some of the well-known artists that thought TJW was the real deal! When Tina Turner met TJW, after he wrote 2 huge hits just for her, "Steamy Windows" and "Undercover Agent for the Blues", she said she was shocked that he was a white dude and not a songwriter of color! R.I.P. to one of America's best, We miss ya. Tony!
He has a unique style and a great way of presenting it. I had the privilege of seeing him in Perth Western Australia. Still remember the concert and realised how good this guy was. Thanks for the music man!!
Those days were the best of times! I sure do miss them and the music. Though, luckily, I can see these performers and their music on places like TH-cam.
I'll give my right arm if this isn't the coolest damn rap song ever made....done by a country boy from Louisiana! Have you ever heard a more infectious beat and groove than this! This song only proves that Tony Joe White is one of those great American originals with a sound that is simply "too damn good" to ever get played on the radio in a world full of cookie-cutter clones and puppets in the top 40.
TJ always has a consistant bluesy voice and great guitar/harmonica. Simple but so genuine. His voice has a great rythm and doesn't need all the electronics.
I saw Tony Joe in Toronto back in '69...at a 12 hour long music festival featuring almost any living and breathing popular artist of the day...almost...seriously...(I hadn't even ever heard of him...) and his performance was one of my favorite that day. I'm talking John Lennon, Jim Morrison, and many...more artists that performed there...Poke Salad Annie is forever blazed in my memory bank.
Tony Joe White, man-o-man. There are a lot of comments made, some touching on his guitar playing and perhaps I missed it, but was (just died -R.I.P.) a prolific songwriter. Aside from one of his biggest hits ("Poke Salad Annie"), he wrote, "Rainy Night In Georgia." Eric Clapton once wanted to play with him and did. R.I.P.
This is great rhythm guitar. A lot of rock artists tried to mimic the 'disco sound' of the late 70s but it always sounded forced, but TJW is really feeling the funk here. You can tell he was actually loving the groove, not just pretending.
SWAMP RAP QUESTO PEZZO È QUALCOSA DI BELLO NON MI STANCO MAI DI VEDERLO E ASCOLTARLO , COINVOLGENTE DI UNA BRAVURA CHE PIÙ DI COSÌ NON SI PUÒ E QUESTO RENDE ANCORA PIÙ INCREDIBILE CHE NON SIA PIÙ IN QUESTA DIMENSIONE! UNA CAREZZA SULL' ANIMA TUA!
If you like this click on "Rainy Night In Georgia". Which he wrote. It is a beautiful rendition of a beautiful song. I have been listening to him for years but had never seen a picture of him. was surprised to see he was white.
TJW I had never laid eyes on this Swamp Rap either, but loved all his other well known stuff , this vid Live from Austin Texas is Something special for all those who love this sound. TJ is the man......
Okay guys! I just found this guy and I LOVE him! I was looking for the original 'Rainy Night In Georgia' believing it was a Ray Charles song or ??. I found Tony Joe singing it on a Dutch television show. Imagine me!? I have now been turned on to so many of his songs on TH-cam. My goodness what a man! He can play and Mr. Carlton 'Achoba' Sonnier, you Sir, are ABSOLUTELY CORRECT..."The 'Blues' Tony Joe style, has no equal"!
have never seen anyone blending harmonica into music this awesome! TJW's music is pretty unique, keeps walking on edge of blues and rock'n'roll with special care. listening to his best albums "home made ice creams" and "real thang" always makes me feel good bout everything, hes truly a legend
Cant believe the comments below about not hearing this guy before , all over the radio with poke salad annie many years ago , guess the beachboys sunk in more than this guy
Tony Joe also happens to be something no one else has mentioned. He's a wonderful person. One of the most down to earth people you could ever deal with. South France? Probably but he also owns a place or two in the Hills of Tennessee.
@KingscribThanks for the reply...I remember laying on the grass at Varsity Stadium during that concert, and watching "missiles" of food and garbage projecting through the air overhead like fireworks, while listening to some of the greatest classic rock bands ever....they called it a "revival" then...there is sure one needed today!! Shortly after that I joined the 8 pce band "Breakwater" as keyboard player and we enjoyed a couple of years of fame throughout Toronto's club circuit.
MrRapid tells it like it is.....this is a priceless take on rap music that beats the hell out of anything I've heard from Snoop Dogg and the other gangstas for sure. Tony Joe is the coolest white boy to ever do a rap tune for sure....
I just found this video, never heard of Tony Joe before, but he is wonderful, being a long time Elvis fan I thought no one could touch him-But Tony Joe sure does-Love this video and love this man-Don't know how I could have not heard of him before-He is as good as Elvis.
... Even much much better than the one covered by EA Presley, POLK SALAD ANNIE, I know this song since over 20 yrs, still love his southern Accent, and the veeerryy funkky Sound great SOUTHERN WAY OF LIFE

R.I.P. to one of America's best,
We miss ya. Tony!
I’ve been following him and his career from the beginning. So underrated. Deserved far more recognition than most crap promoted on top 40 radio.
He has a unique style and a great way of presenting it. I had the privilege of seeing him in Perth Western Australia. Still remember the concert and realised how good this guy was. Thanks for the music man!!
This is cool in any decade...loving this and I have watched it 50 times...catchy and not outdated!!
TJW ... the voice, the guitar playing ... it's everything. And not to forget ... the harmonica!
Let's give some credit to the Drummer , he is spot on, the timing is what makes this an Epic Performance. IMO
Was there ever a good band without a good drummer?
@stephenalexander6721
Yes there was!
Damn that tone. Damn that story telling.Damn that groove. Damn that band being tight as F. Funk yeah!
Just discovered TJW.......man, I'm gonna be playing him a LOT. Timeless
Those days were the best of times! I sure do miss them and the music. Though, luckily, I can see these performers and their music on places like TH-cam.
Friend of mine saw TJW in Houston 20 years ago. All he had for a band was a drummer. Said it was the best show he ever saw.
A real underrated talent & still makes me jam out everytime I hear him sing. Rest In Peace Tony Joe White
Loved his voice. The ladies loved him too
RIP Tony, Such a cool and great artist that will never be forgotten.
He was handsome and very talented . I actually baby sat for him a couple times
I'll give my right arm if this isn't the coolest damn rap song ever made....done by a country boy from Louisiana! Have you ever heard a more infectious beat and groove than this!
