Eddy was so great it's a shame he died so young. Eddy and his father were a really good team. I have a "Shaver Live" album that features truly outstanding playing by Eddy with Billy Joe's fantastic songs and outlaw country vocals. Thanks for featuring a guitarist that many people don't know about or may have forgotten.

Watch the video of Dwight Yokum giving kudos to Eddy on 'Little Sister'. As a kid, he was schooled by Dickey Betts on Duane Allman's guitar. Eddy was amazing. RIP Eddy and Billy Joe!

Eddy came from great family. His mama died and his grandmama died and his wife divorced him all within months of each other, and Eddy just fell off the edge of the earth. We all know the music business is hard. Eddy was not a lifetime or career drug user.

I was lucky enough to see Billie Joe and Eddy several times in very small rooms. Eddy was gifted and played so loudly that you could feel it in your chest cavity. I was always exhausted when I left the gig. The playing was always wonderful.
Right on!! I got to see them right before Eddy passed away. I seen them at The Down Home in Johnson City, TN. I hadn't heard Eddy till that night, and I can tell you one thing, I got an education on how powerful a guitar player can be that night!!

You know what's so true about that story? Billy Joe would have done it, whipped his ass right there on the spot.
Weird concept: A hard country singer and a rocker electric guitarist swapping off and giving each other space. Amazing how well it worked. I like how after he's sung his part and has some time to takes a breather, Billy Joe squats down to put the full spotlight on his son. Very touching, especially in hindsight. RIP both of them.

Eddy was a bad ass deluxe..he was vicious sounding while working for Dwight Yoakam too.

He was on fire then and his tone was the best I ever heard him have on those recordings.

Eddy was Yoakam's "Gun For Hire" when I saw him for the first time......His playing was Absolutely Feroicious!!!!
Came back to watch this again after hearing about Billie Joe's recent death. Eddy was a fabulous guitarist and i can't get over how the audience looks like they are in a coma sitting there listening!
Yeah, I've heard other live versions and I do believe Eddy downplayed his playing a little here due to the crowd so they might up-take it better. Well, they were comatose and he might as well just went for it without reservations. Not that he doesn't rip it up, but he can blow it up when he desires and he was playing the both ends to the middle here.
Thank you for putting a spotlight on Shaver. Billy Joe wrote a few all time classics and Eddy was among the very best. RIP.

My dad became great friends with Billy Joe when he met him at the VA in nashville,tn. Eddy and his dad came to our house plenty of times for some party favors and I'm here to tell you that Billy Joe was truly the most down to earth guy you'll ever meet. Eddy didn't talk a lot but you'll never meet another guy like him! Eddy got his wings much sooner than Billy Joe and it's because those fine feathered things in heaven needed a real guitar man. Billy Joe just reunited with his best friend and I hope the devil dodged him. Gone but never forgotten
I’m 64 years old and Eddie to date is the only guitar player that makes me smile so hard that I actually laugh out loud and how ridiculously outstanding this guy played. There’s 1 million great guitar players, but it’s the way that he put things together his improvising, his off the cuff just taking off on riffs and I swear he’s making up on the fly. The guy was nuts, man.
Billy Joe passed away today, I knew him very well, he was a little older than me, but we grew up in the same town, then he moved on to Waco, Tx. I headed south to Houston, Tx. He will be missed. He's the one who introduced me to Eddy and his dad.

I consider myself a better person for having seen him on four separate occasions. Billy Joe gave off energy that was like no other, he gave all when performing and was genuine in his love and appreciation of God. I have read other comments on other postings where people say they would be dead today had they not seen him and had the chance to talk with him. He was truly a Cowboy and Soldier of God.
He will be missed very much. Thank you and God Bless you.
The live acoustic version of this is quite possibly the most amazing thing I have ever heard . The absolute miracle is that Eddy's guitar fretboard didn't self combust during the solo's. See it to believe it!
Its on the "Storyteller live" album. I bet many a guitar player has heard this and gently put his guitar in the garbage and quit playing forever.
Billy Joe is a hell of a songwriter.. it had to tear his heart out when his son died.... very sad. You could see the pride in Billy Joe’s eyes when his son was playing the hell outa that guitar...

RIP Eddie. I actually opened up for Eddie twice! Once with Dwight Yoakum where he was filling in for Pete Anderson and once with his dad. With Dwight he had to play a tele strung with 13s if I recall. I could barely bend the strings! He proceeded to rip it up during the show flawlessly playing all of Dwights hits. He played through 2 twins with a slapback echo on one of them. Then he had a Marshall 4 x12 UNDER the stage. Thunderous! With his dad, he was back to the strat in this video. I think he had 1 twin and also the 4 x 12 facing backwards. Really nice guy and was willing to share his knowledge.

I saw Billy Joe and Eddy play a small club back in the 90's. I got to stand right in front front of the stage. They put on a real clinic. It was a joy to see such musicianship and great songwriting up close.
Billy was one of the most fun artists that played at the blues club I worked at. He also performed a really long set...then danced with the crowd (myself included) and then played another set. This channel rings back so many great memories. Thanks Fil!

I think Eddy was under-rated. I like how Fil points out that Eddy was responsible for rhythm and lead. He does it more, and better than most I've heard. He is also very creative with his lines and riffs. Lots of changes and movement. Always interesting. a true virtuoso.
Yeah, Billy Joe Shaver is fantastic. I only found out about him recently thanks to Norm Macdonald on Netflix, and I’m glad to see him make an appearance on this channel as well! Very few TH-camrs cover such a wide variety of genres, Fil, and _none_ that I have seen do it this well.

Saw Eddy and Billy Joe twice in the mid to late 90s in LExington, KY and I was convinced that I saw the Eddy was a guitar god as I came out of those two shows. Blew my mind. (Mark)

Wow! I loved this video, my favorite Billy Joe Shaver song with his son Eddy burning up the lead guitar. You are so well versed in all that 70s Texas music icons I was drawn in by! You know the whole drill as if you were there, Fil. Thanks for appreciative analysis of music I lived for. In my 30s and 40s I kept trying to explain this bunch to my Connecticut friends who'd heard mainstream country radio, missing out on the wit, wisdom and hot picking! Thanks for the affirmations sone forty plus years later, Fil!

guysmalley I was referring to the crappy country radio stations up north in the 70s play Olivia Newton John but not Rita Coolidge. I drink my coffee black, and having grown up in NJ, CT'S not such a big deal: some parts snooty others provincial, plenty of regular Joes. Simply deprived of Guy Clark, John Prine, from an early age, lol.

I got to see both of them playing in a small club just a few months before Eddy past away. I will never forget that night. Eddy's playing was something I had never saw or heard in person before. Eddy was one of the best and had he lived long enough he would have become a household name. The whole thing is just so sad. A day doesn't so by that I don't think of Eddy Shave. RIP Eddy Shaver.

Per Eddy’s dad, he played lead for Dwight Yoakam on Dwight’s 1st 2 albums. RIP Eddy, never forget hearing it from my next door neighbor (who knew Eddie) early New Year’s Day... :(

Yeeehaaaa...that makes my foot bounce. Very articulate guitar playing and great country shredding. And he plays very efficient. It sounds all so easy peasy wich shows the whole band are real pros.

@ 3:18 when Billy said, throwdown Eddy, you just had to know how proud Billy Joe was of his son Eddy. Eddy was the real deal, a true honky tonk, blues bar guitar slinger. Eddy, his mother Brenda, Billy Joe, their all together now, May the Good Lord watch over all them now. They are missed and will not be forgotten.

I did to......Probably the Best "Gun For Hire" Yoakam ever had with him out on tour.....Eddy Shaver is and was Brilliant!!!!
Dwight had auditioned any number of “hot” guitarists, but they were playing their music, not Dwights.
Eddy learned all of Pete Anderson’s guitar parts from a cassette tape, in the airplane on the way to the audition. Then he played Pete’s leads for Dwight note for note. Eddy was hired on the spot.
My nightly routine is walk my Beagle crack open a beer and watch Fil. This one of my favorites and real country, Todays country is like airline food you know you ate something but your not sure what it was. Fil thanks for posting this and if you get time check out some western swing (cowboy jazz) Bob Wills was the king and The Hot Club of Cowtown are keeping it alive today

Yessir, Bob Wills And The Texas Playboys were the inventors of what came to be known as "Western Swing". They are also largely responsible for the success of Cain's Ballroom located in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I've always believed their music influenced all the great Tulsa musicians in the 60's and what became known as The Tulsa Sound (I think of it as The Tulsa Shuffle).
One of the best things about watching Eddy playing with Billy Joe, is that you can just see how proud he was of Eddy.

Father and son reunited in the heavenly band. RIP to two maestros. I saw Eddy and Billy Joe play several times both full band and acoustic and in all seriousness great nights of music every time.
Eddie actually did make one solo album "Baptism of Fire" on a french record label. Dont think it was ever released in the US but it can be found. Took me 3 years to find and cost me over $100 but I finally got a cooy of it. KILLER GUITAR on it. I saw them several times and got to know Eddie a little. We really hit it off and he was the most humble peeson I think I've ever met. No attitude or ego at all. We both loved vintage gear which was uncool at the time.He played through a Mesa Boogie Coliseum head during this period and usually a Matchless combo in stereo with it- Big part of his sound. First time I met him he was getting his stuff ready and they were about to go on stage and I complimented him on his strat and he told me the story about it and we talked for a few and then he hands me the Strat says "Here you wanna play it I got to run take a leak real quick?". Of course I said yes and doodled a minute or two whike he was gone. That guitar was not easy to play but it worked great for.him. Had he got to do the solo album on Antone's label he would have blown some minds. He was working on a style if his own where he effortlessly switched between slide and fretting notes in the same song and even in the same solo. I hate the whole drug overdose story because there was some shady stuff that went on that night and nobody really knows what happened exactly. Just a shame. RIP Eddie. Thanks for posting this Fil. Love your taste in guitar playing man!

Eddy was on his way to being one of the greats. Billy Joe IS one of the greats! Anyone who enjoyed this clip should buy the CD "Billy and the Kid". Awesome haunting songs. A hidden gem.
I had the priviledge of being very good friends, like family, with his niece. We saw him together and he came and set with us during the break and after his show. He told us all the Mad Cow Gravy story and I think later went on to make it a song. He was a very nice man and I'm glad I had the chance to meet him.
Eddy is a superb musician- a master of textured picking, precise rhythms, and also a "Katy bar the door" killer 6-string shredder. I always thought this song was both hooky and meaty. As a Southerner, I've seen the old money and nouveau narcissist hypocrisy and love the humorous way Billy Joe calls it all out in this song. Billy Joe is a master of observation and story-telling. He's got a "survivor's bone" in him that obviously has given him the drive to just keep on keepin' on until that final roll call. We were blessed to have Billy Joe and then doubly blessed to have Billy Joe and Eddy.
Good pick Fil..Billy Joe is truly an outlaw when it comes to country music..great song writer too.
Another funny detail to add to the story of when Billy Joe shot that guy is that he later said, referring to the fact that he had had to use a bullet, "That guy owes me a bullet." Billy Joe is the real deal and truly is an integral part of outlaw country. One more tidbit, he's Norm Macdonald's favorite musician!

Look at Dwight Yoakum's Little Sister video...Eddie was his lead guitarist. Incredible!
The bar where the shooting happened was called Papa Joes, just south of Waco. They had an open mic / jam night at that time, and me and a few musician friends from the area were there when the investigation was still ongoing in the aftermath of that. The stories (rumors) varied widely on what happened, but the consistent theme was insult(s) followed by a veiled threat. Georgia on a Fast Train was a staple cover (I played bass, btw, both bass guitar and double bass). Also, there was a singer in the area that was about 6' 5", played acoustic guitar and would always call Queen's 'Fat Bottom Girls'....which would always blow the roof off the joint...a hundred drunk rednecks singing in unison. Great times. Billy and Eddie are legends and underappreciated, THANK YOU SIR for featuring them.

Eddy played lead for Todd Snider early on. Todd wrote Waco Moon when Eddy passed.

Well deserved time you spent about these guys. I'm not a country fan, but I'm a huge Billy Joe Shaver fan. Seeing him live was unbelievable. Most underrated guy in music until recently, so glad you out the light on him and his unbelievably talented son Eddie.

Eddy liked rock music also. We got to the venue's green room and Rolling Stone song was playing. Eddy connected his guitar and started playing along. He was a great person and fun.
I asked for some advice about music on TH-cam and you were a huge help. I am a huge music buff but not a player and one day I plan to also do one on Eddie and Billy Joe. I came across your channel because I'm a huge Shaver fan, have seen Billy Joe live, and since moving to Texas I've realized how huge he is here. It's about the only country I listen to. Great job!!

Phil, that was a thorough review! I remember seeing the video for this song on mtv (of all places!) 25 years ago. I then became a fan of Billy Joe Shaver. But I didn’t realize the guitarist was his son until 15 years later! I’d never heard of him until after his death.
Like Derek Trucks, Eddy Shaver was a prodigy born of musical talent. Perhaps he had the genetics, but he also had the dedication to perfect his craft. It’s a damn shame he succumbed to heroin. He would’ve been one of the greats.

Saw a vid with him describing a meet up with a formed band Union Rebel i think. Co is Eddy who shows up late. First note thru a 'truck drug' Strat and Marshall cab powered by a Mesa head was said like having a car accident and waking up after a short coma. Staggering!!
btw Billy Joe asked the guy 'where do you want it?' Probably didn't think he'd pull the trigger.

I can't believe it took me so long to find this. I've been watching your videos for a while, Fil. I never dreamed I'd find Eddy here. He was amazing. There is relatively little of him on youtube. Live, his playing would change the way your heart was beating. That strat belonged to Dwayne Allman, and was one of a couple of guitars given to him by Dickey .. I think it's a 58 c neck? and now is being played by Lukas Nelson. There is a long, sad story there. He played accoustic guitar beautifully too. Like Stevie, he had cleaned up before he died, and his 'overdose' leaves me with more questions than answers. He would have been recording 'Live at Antones' just days after his death, and had the advance in his pocket the day he died. So many years ago, and yet the pain, although it dulls, just doesn't go away.
Finally. Thank you Fil. Eddy was one of the best. What a tragic loss.
