I really enjoyed this journey through Chinatown, and I must say that it has more appeal at night with the lights. Paddy's Market has always been underwhelming for me as a local and especially now as it undergoes a renovation. I don't think there's any comparison to Perth as they are two totally different cities, with each having its own appeal. I love Perth and think of it more as a beautiful country town with a relaxed and layed back atmosphere. Sydney is a much older and unplanned city with a much faster pace and a beautiful harbour in which to relax and slow down. I hope you will return in the future and visit other states and territories to really appreciate the beauty and vastness of Australia and the friendliness of its people. I like to think that no matter how far you travel and what beauty you find along the way, there is no place like home.
Yeah, Chinatown - other cuisines are available - is a lot bigger than Dixon St and Market City. I see so many vloggers never venture far from there. There is even a newer expansion to the west at Darling Square. You should have gone for Yum Cha. Get some of those chicken feet into you. The cost does add up if you aren't careful. And if anyone is wondering about the "Darling" name, as in Darling Harbour, it isn't anything to do with someones sweetheart, but General Sir Ralph Darling, who served as Governor of New South Wales from 1825 to 1831.The indigenous name is 'Tumbalong', meaning a place where seafood is found. So, still a place for seafood, although a few more food options have been added to the menu since those days. Haymarket has been a market area since the 1820s. It was the main Sydney produce market, but that is now at Flemington. Paddy's was more of a local market for local people, but much more touristy now.
Obviously Paddy's markets are under renovation with all that cyclone fencing up. You didn't go upstairs more levels of shops, factory clearance etc restaurants and a foodcourt.
Should've had half a dozen beers at the Covent Garden with us, Lee, before you tackled that food court feed. No doubt both of those dishes would've scored a lot better with a skin full. It was a real joy to have had met you that day. Thank you again for doing such a wonderful job showing parts of Sydney to the world. I hope you come back again and see so much more one day.
Spent 7 months in Glebe in '92 while backpacking. Chinatown was our place for cheap food and Bobbys kebabs and the Pie shop on Glebe Point Rd. Loved Sydney, lots of laughs and great memories.
Lovely video nice to see loads of food stalls and having a good browse around the market will score both food reviews 8.1 out of 10 onwards my friends 👍😀
LEE - if you think that's a lot of fruit and veg in one place then you be absolutely blown away by Flemington Markets on a Saturday morning - it's at least 10 times bigger - and there's a huge flea market there too.
Loving these videos of Sydney. Agree that the walk from Bondi to Coogee is worth the effort. Also another great choice for fish and chips would be Doyles at Watson Bay. They have a take away and Doyles on the beach is a great fish restaurant in the quality on your earlier visit to Garfish.
There is a reason that the English pound appears to be more valuable than the Australian dollar, it goes back to when our currency was changed. In Australia the 1pound became 2 dollars, the reason being that 1 shilling became 10c and was closer to matching the original values. Also the $2 coin is smaller than the $1 coin because the $1 came out first and it was better to make a smaller thick coin than a bigger thin one.
Oh Lee, you have no idea how big of a mistake it was to miss out on getting some of those Emperor's Cream Puffs that you walked past. Any local will be happy to tell you just how delicious they are and CHEAP.
Thank you, Thank you for the videos with NO Music on. So refreshing to be able to hear the background noises and your voice. I loath the use of it on films and TV when it is louder than the voices that you so desparately want to hear. Why it has to be on all the time and so loud I do not know. Thank you again.
Chinatown food is very trustworthy. It's best to eat in the food halls where the Chinese go to eat, like Sussex Court, always good. I've eaten there many times. so that's true. The pepper steak is excellent, but remember to have a drink handy. Nine Dragons in particular is excellent. Paddys is very useful for a wide selection of just about everything. and for tourists, not all that expensive and the quality is pretty good for clothes like cotton. Actually, that's a bit quiet for Paddys. Might be doing a renovation or reorganizing. Chinatown is also good for proper Chinese groceries.
Authentic Chinese batter is made differently than the batter we use for fish. I have found that when you are eating something a little bit spicy, you need to eat the rice with it to help with the heat. If that is not enough, you need some milk to take away the burn.
We always go to the Dixon's House food court when we're in Sydney, cheap and tasty Chinese food, one of the stalls is always very busy, that's the one to head for 😏. It's in Chinatown and you enter it from Hay St or Dixon St. Well worth a visit.
My experience of Thai and Chinese restaurants, Thais usually make everything from fresh but Chinese cut corners and use frozen or tinned ingredients. Genuine Thai is usually better but more expensive. Not all Chinese do this and many are great if it’s done fresh
Yeah they also tip uneaten rice back into the main container in the kitchen and re sell it ...and don't think they don't.. they do in a lot of places ...it's money to them
Hard to go wrong round there Lee. Chinatown suffered hugely during the Covid lockdown but even today hasn't fully recovered ,maybe your video will bring them good luck and prosperity. There's also Flemington markets, Melbourne markets and Salamanca markets in Hobart - that's about as good as it gets, international tourists provides most their money. ❤
Great tour of the food around Chinatown but to be honest Lee, you were spoilt for choice there. To the average person like me, it all looked superb and the variety was amazing. It is one place i would visit more than any other if i was where you are now. You will look back on that choice you had once you get back to Britain and i can see you in the near future somewhere like Rochdale or maybe even Blackpool with Steve and you will be wishing you had that same choice. You will be forever referring to your trip down under and salivating at all the dishes that you did not try. .. Great video once again.
As a Brit who emigrated to Sydney and now Briz 19 years ago, I’m enjoying this series. China town is fine but prefer Thai town and glad to see you stumbled across it. Thai food is much cheaper and better here than in the UK probably due to the large number of thai people and restaurants.
Thai food tends to require fresh tropical and subtropical plants in it. Which is easily grown in areas like Brisbane, not so much the case in the UK I bet ;).
this why a 99 is called - When Cadbury launched its small Flake for ice creams in 1930, the UK ice cream industry was dominated by ex-pat Italians. "So, to appeal to Italians we called our superb Flake a '99'." So, the ice cream is named after the Flake that goes in it, but why were Flakes chosen to add to ice cream cones?
Why there call 99 ice cream Apparently it is so called because the majority of ice cream merchants in the fifties were Italian. The King of Italy had an elite bodyguard consisting of 99 men. So anything elite was called 99s by Italians. So they called the elite ice cream a 99.
Don't call it a 99er here! I did once as I licked at the soft serve with glee..... All the Aussies around me thought I was being naughty and referring to a 69er 😂
In 1922, a man called Stefano Arcari opened up an ice cream shop in Scotland at 99 Portobello High Street. He would apparently break a Flake in half and then place it in the ice cream to serve to his customers, taking inspiration from the shop's address for the ice cream's name...
From the Cadbury website: An Ice Cream served in a cone with a Flake 99 is the UK's favourite ice cream. In the days of the monarchy in Italy the King had an elite guard consisting of 99 soldiers. Subsequently anything really special or first class was known as "99". When Cadbury launched its small Flake for ice creams in 1930, the UK ice cream industry was dominated by ex-pat Italians. So, to appeal to Italians we called our superb Flake a "99".
New Tai yuen has been there since at least 1974. Always my favourite along with Marigold on Sussex Street but i dont know if its still there. Got to try Yum Cha which is normally from 11am.
We love ur videos like that. It's so much more natural and interesting. It's just like we are walking round with you Lee. Thankyou great entertainment.
A green curry and rice in a Thai restaurant in Thailand will cost you about £2. Thai people don't eat a lot of green curry, masaman and I don't recall ever seeing a Thai eat Pad Thai. Their go to dishes are mainly pad krapow moo (£1 minced pork with rice and spices) and som tum ( £1 pappaya salad). Masaman although eaten sometimes in Thailand is originally from Malaysia. I like a masaman.
Love this style of filming the vlog Lee, just as you and not The MacMaster although saying that I love both. Great walk around Chinatown in Sydney. Maybe if you’d waited for you Chinese meal you would have got better. The Lemon chicken looked ok but like you said over battered. That peppered beef and onions looked more preferable. A nice cool refreshing beer afterwards. Paddy’s Market looked a bit hyped up for tourists more like parts of Oxford Street in London. Overall great video.

Good Evening Lee. The answer to your question is...... Yes i do. This style of Content in your video's now is a lot better, because it does feel a lot more Personal, Intimate and just that bit more as if i am walking with You. I really did like Paddy's Market. There was so many Food stalls and loads of different types of Fruit and Vegetables. There was a very Good mixture of different Products and little Moment's that you could Purchase. I really like Fridge Magnets to put on my new Fridge Freezer that is being delivered tomorrow. Chinatown, did look absolutely Superb. I really like your Dishes Lee, that you tried. Very Delicious and cooked so well. Yes, i am a Fan of the All you can eat Buffet. You go up to the Buffet, have a look to see what there is on offer, take a small plate and have a small Portion of different Meat Dishes, some Seafood Dishes and a little bit of Vegetables and Soft Noodles, please do Not Pile or Heap up the Food on your plate, because you can go back as many times as you can manage. That is the Whole idea, of an All you can eat. Some, people get it Wrong, they really are just Greedy so and so's. I only, have as much as i can manage. Only about 2/3 small plates. You have to make room for the Deserts. Chocolate Fountain with Pieces of Fruit to Dip, real Itialian Gelato Ice-Cream, Chocolate Profitteroles and Whipped Cream. I really do know my All you can eat Buffets. You have to pay one price for the Buffet. Always go for any Offers..
Good to see your having something different Lee 👍. Loving Sydney but at the moment Perth would get my vote. Sydney harbour looks lovely but the city centre, not so good. Looking forward to the next vlog.
Good video Lee with so many choices you’re always gonna feel a little regretful. Can I suggest a pub crawl video, you rarely do them, but really liked your Nashville pub crawl 👍🏻
Never heard of a 99! 🤷♀️ My favourite in China town is "Chinese Noodle restaurant" in Thomas Street, Haymarket. Great food, quite popular. If you do go there must try their braised sticky eggplant which they're known for, even if you don't usually like eggplant(which I don't), it's surprisingly good! Crisp on outside and melts on inside. And has a slightly sweet taste. The cream puffs you showed earlier in the vid are infamous around Sydney. Tasty and very cheap. Thai is nice but Vietnamese is probably my favourite. Always feels fresh and cleaner not greasy like some other Asian and south Asian cuisines. Love Vietnamese pancakes - banh xeo. Vietnamese Pho is also popular in Sydney. But the most popular Vietnamese food and a Sydney staple at this point is Banh Mi. The classic "pork roll" is the most popular one. And very filling but cheap eat for Sydney. $6-9 depending where you go. Plenty of places do them but Marrickville pork roll is the OG, authentic and tasty. There's one in loftus lane in Sydney city and Steam mill lane in Haymarket (so in the China town area, I think you may have even gone past it in the vid). I hope you get to try one before you leave. I've mentioned before but" Spice Alley" is great too as it has several SE Asian cuisines all in the one place. And the outdoor seating with the lanterns makes you feel like you're in an SE Asian country eating street food, great vibe. Definitely recommend. It's a short walk from central station.
Go down into the historic “ Rocks” area Lee, near the “;Overseas Passenger Terminal “ ( the Sydney Cruise Ship terminal, in Circular Quay). It’s the site of the 1st convict settlement, and has lots of little laneways that lead to some great eateries. Also while there, check out Sydney’s oldest Pub, “ The Fortune of War” Hotel in George St. The food there is great.
Too late he left Sydney some time last week. Unfortunately, too much time wasted filming fish and chips and Chinese menus rather than what’s really on offer.
Maybe Sydneysider, stop yer moaning like an old bloke and watch tomorrow's video and you'll see I went to the Rocks!!!! Remind me not to invite you to a party. LOL x
@@TheMacMaster Oi! Just saw this. Am neither a moaner, old or a bloke. Was just wanting you to get the full experience. Oh well, too late now. Still lovely and sunny, 30C here tomorrow ;)
Aussies get paid a bit more than twice the dollars than Brits get paid pounds too.....on average. Also, Australia ranks #4 in the world for purchasing power while Britain ranks #12.
Great episode. You made a rookie mistake eating in a food hall rather than more authentic little shops. Amazing how much Chinatown in Sydney looks like the one in Soho. 😂
@Gothic55 rubbish I've had some great food from food halls you have to be discretional as Lee was same as from the little authentic shops had crap and great. What he got looks great
That the phrase was coined in Portobello, Scotland when Stephen Arcari, who opened a shop in 1922 at 99 Portobello High Street, would break a large 'Flake' in half and stick it in an ice cream.
The building where you checked out the menu at "Spicy Joint" has a big food court on the bottom floor (you passed the "Eating World" sign when you entered). I used to visit that place almost daily when I was a student back in the day as there was a load of variety down there amongst all the different outlets and it was relatively cheap (by CBD standards anyway). One of the best places for Chinese food in Sydney is probably the suburb of Chatswood (about 25 minutes by train on the North Shore Line from the city, just down the road a few miles from that Garfish seafood restaurant you visited in Crows Nest), as heaps of Chinese live there so the restaurants tend to be really good & the food genuine rather than "touristy".
37:41 I was told by a relative of someone who had married a Thai lady that Thai restaurants in "the west" are actually serving what is called 'Royal Thai' food, as very few natives can afford to eat like that back home. Perhaps that explains the price premium we also see here.
Where you ate is my favourite restaurant I love their Hot and Spicy Chicken (No.46) while you were eating the chef was sat behind you and kept looking at you great video we love visiting Sydney chinatown when we leave our home in Nelson Bay for a few nights away
I have eaten lamb's brain 🐑 Towards the end of the 80s, I was an apprentice chef at a hotel where we served lamb's brain as a night snack at a wedding. Of course I had to taste. It was a special texture but tasted good. Another great video 👍👌
Should have gone to Burwood, or Flemington, or Cabbramatta or Hurstville. Actually there are Asian places everywhere. My favourite is Burwood. The choice is amazing. You picked all the Gwai Lo options, kitchen knew you were a pallid pom just from what you picked. Food Courts are authentic. There are lots around. A quick way of having lots of choice. You won't get food poisoning in even the tiny hole in the wall places. Not a reason to choose a place. The few times I ever got a funny belly, it actually was in swank restaurants.
With this vlog it seems more as though you're doing a live without the walkbys etc. That market looked more like markets used to be in the UK. Hope you didn't get too much after effects from that spicy beef.
Paddy market is where you save money and you will find your fridge magnets cheaper than in George street.I tried the chicken feet it was ok..You see loads of boomerangs here in the charity shops hilarious.i think you were right to eat from there..great portions..looks Gert lush.Another great video fond memories of being there a year ago and 20 odd years before that..
I suppose you could ask them to cook you a less spicy version. Or just pick a less spicy menu item. I have eaten in that food court before, but not from the shop.
As you like food courts you should try the one in Perth its in the shopping mall between Murry and Hay St and get out of the city for a day up to Perth hills and go for a proper bush walk.
Another great video Lee, relaxing to watch, yes i do prefer these types of video, you get the atmosphere of the place. china town looked great, i actually liked that market as i would have been buying Sydney souvineers 😊
Aw, Lee, you should have gone for the Karaoke - I could imagine you murdering either 'Down Under' (Men At Work) or 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' (Kylie)!
Spice Alley in Sydney is great , it's a small hawker style area for eating , good for curry and also all types of Asian food. It's in Kensington street Sydney
Hi Lee, loved the video! Especially going into the market. Perth and Sydney, very different cities, different vibes. Sydney seems so crowded compared to Perth. Question: Did you buy the hat?
I started going to Dixon Street when I was four and my Grandad took me shopping at the Chinese Markets. He always brought home the fresh ingredients to make us a stir fry at home, and also bought us lots of treats, so I grew up eating things like Chun Piu Moi, Lup Cheong, liquorice flavoured prunes (my favourites of all the dried plums), White Rabbit candies, and char siu bao! I still treat myself to lup cheong and rice, best things ever! Dixon Street had two of my favourite restaurants, but looking at this video, I doubt they still exist, the families who owned them would be long gone by now, but they were simple eateries, like a big family kitchen with black and white tiled floors, free tea from the huge urn - just grab a clean glass and help yourself - and the best Chinese food I’ve ever had. I miss those days!
@@phunk8607 I know the exact food court seen in the clip, and whilst yes, it’s far better than your typical food court, it’s nowhere near the level of many restaurants within a stones throw of there. Having been a regular visitor to China Town for over 30 years, I’d be choosing a multitude of restaurants over that food court each and every time.

My favourite in China town is "Chinese Noodle restaurant" in Thomas Street, Haymarket.
@Sydneysider1310 Ah well, He will be back, so maybe on his next visit.😁
Maybe Sydneysider, stop yer moaning like an old bloke and watch tomorrow's video and you'll see I went to the Rocks!!!! Remind me not to invite you to a party. LOL x
@@TheMacMaster Oi! Just saw this. Am neither a moaner, old or a bloke. Was just wanting you to get the full experience.
Oh well, too late now. Still lovely and sunny, 30C here tomorrow ;)
Hope you enjoyed your ‘food Safari’, Sydney. 😊
Get the silver fox in one those outfit in a VLOG
Whats with the sheets? A new thing that passed me by😂
Food looked good plenty of beef and chicken nice walkabout in the market.👍
Fried beansprouts are bl##dy delicious.😉
This is an excellent vid for my family and I , as we are off to Sydney around Christmas 2024
You will enjoy your trip in my hometown of Sydney!! Chinatown is great, so is Darling Harbour, Barangaroo, and The Rocks!!
Highly recommend the food at Spice Alley, just a short walk away from paddys market on Broadway. Not in the China Town complex
Yeah, Spice Alley is a bang'n little spot for an awesome meal
Of course after all those tasty places you choose a food court, Of course!
You’ve got to buy a hat with corks!
I wear factor 50. 👍🏼
Are you coming to Melbourne? We’d be happy to show you around. Maybe even the MCG
Good video mate glad you tried different food looked nice
You can get some cheap genuine imitation luxury items at Paddy's market.
The Chinese food is really excellent down under
Another good video, enjoyed this, loved the walk, thank for sharing 😊
I have eaten lamb's brain 🐑 Towards the end of the 80s, I was an apprentice chef at a hotel where we served lamb's brain as a night snack at a wedding. Of course I had to taste. It was a special texture but tasted good. Another great video 👍👌
Thanks for sharing that, you've put me right off me evening meal
Paddy market is where you save money and you will find your fridge magnets cheaper than in George street.I tried the chicken feet it was ok..You see loads of boomerangs here in the charity shops hilarious.i think you were right to eat from there..great portions..looks Gert lush.Another great video fond memories of being there a year ago and 20 odd years before that..
thanks for the walk around china town Lee I must do that again soon no music for me
Much prefer this type of vid Lee
Don't worry about coming from Mansfield you're as good as everybody else
@@barnowl.Yes there is .
Yes an enjoyable stroll around Sydney was nice, I liked the market? The food you had looked ok, though too spicy for me I think.
I suppose you could ask them to cook you a less spicy version. Or just pick a less spicy menu item. I have eaten in that food court before, but not from the shop.
Relaxed style a winner in my book. All vlogs enjoyable.
Love these kind definitely without the music more interesting my opinion.✔️👍💙
Great video. 👍 😂
As you like food courts you should try the one in Perth its in the shopping mall between Murry and Hay St and get out of the city for a day up to Perth hills and go for a proper bush walk.
and watch out for the man-eating bushes! 🙂
Lee,eating outside in China town has the same health habits as the food courts, its not the risk like eating on an Asian town street
He’s so cautious.
Great video, I like both styles of video, that Chinatown would slay me, way too much choice lol.
Spice Alley in Sydney is great , it's a small hawker style area for eating , good for curry and also all types of Asian food. It's in Kensington street Sydney
Well there is no Kensington Street in Sydney ---maybe in one of the suburbs
Great walk about pal 👍
Hi Lee, loved the video! Especially going into the market. Perth and Sydney, very different cities, different vibes. Sydney seems so crowded compared to Perth.
Question: Did you buy the hat?
Food: walk around Paddy’s Market and head up to Thomas Street.
There lies the food gold.
Can’t believe that you ate in the food court when you were amongst so many amazing restaurants in China Town.
Really, those food court are iconic. Not typical shopping foodcourt mate, these food courts are not for tourist locals eat them.
Sussex centre has fabulous laksa. So sad BBQ king closed 😢
