Having grown up in Scotland as well as being to this loch, I can say that the hill on the left hand side (if you are on the north side looking south) is actually where the filming occurred for the Prisoner of Azkaban when Buckbeak and Harry fly over the loch. Yes I know that this isn't as much cannon as the books but it is the most likely location. Also, all of the Scottish names were pronounced correctly :)

"Ben MacDuibh" was spot-on 👌
"Loch an Eilean": "Eil" is pronounced like "ale", and "ean" is just "en" as in "given".
"Glenbuchat Castle": the "buchat" is pronounced almost like "bucket", but with a gutteral "ch" like "loch".
(All this said, Scots Gaelic has a bajillion dialects with different pronunciations, so anything can be right really lol)

Ok, J, for the sake of us history buffs, and also of Shadiversity, I must protest your ridiculing of the castle at 8:00, Glenbuchat Castle. By the standards of medieval castles that is a fairly good sized castle, and it even has a good few windows and more than two floors. That's a pretty expensive place for the time period. Compared to some of the castles of the same age in England and France, that's actually a very nice castle. Most were just towers with a few rooms. This one looks like it actually has a good bit of space. The other larger ones you showed were made much later, when people actually built castles as houses (or should I say mansions) to live in, not just outposts to keep an eye on lands around the kingdom. Finally, I must point out, that, despite its state of ruin, it has one very important feature that proves that it is a castle: MACHICOLATIONS!!!!

And for those of us americans that have never seen a castle, I looked up the definition of machicolation: "an opening between the supporting corbels of a projecting parapet or the vault of a gate, through which stones or burning objects could be dropped on attackers." And in my own words after looking at pictures: normally the top floor of a tower extends out a bit around the edges and has holes in the floor that they could drop dangerous objects through to hurt people. The holes are the machicolations.

In such a case the tower is usually a place of habitation, and not defense. Those with the holes are usually set around the perimeter of a castle wall and also above the gate.

I would hope that's the case , lol. It'd be pretty asinine for any students at Hogsmead to have to go all the way to London and take the train to just basically come back home. I imagine that any school-age students that live in Hogsmead are permitted to wait until the evening when the Express arrives with the other students, and they join them at the station to head to Hogwarts.
I mean the track literally ends at Hogsmeade so...
I think for students who live more locally/in Scotland, they use floo powder like Harry and Ron did into McGonagall's office after christmas at the Burrow in HBP. Some might use portkeys I guess, but pretty sure flooing is more popular.
So maybe Hogsmeade based students could just Floo up to the castle?
@@ohheyfiona Hogwarts has tried floo powder and portkeys before, v and they didn't work. As said above the track ends at Hogsmeade so the local students would join with the others there. I think other people in Scotland just go to London though.

If that was Azkaban and Hogwarts was that tiny island castle, then Sirius would have gotten to Hogwarts a lot sooner, explained everything and the story would have been over by their second or third day at Hogwarts.
Azkaban is in the north sea.
I always thought that Hogwarts was sitting on Loch Ness. There is a somewhat rundown and ruined castle on the edge of the Loch. The Legend of the Loch Ness Monster, could just be the giant squid. It is reasonably in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by hills and wooded areas. The place is absolutely huge so the quiddich pitch and greenhouses ect would easily fit. The village/town that is relatively close by would be a good candidate for Hogsmede. Plus the sheer size of the Loch would be a perfect fit for the first years and their traditional boat ride to the castle. It would give all of the older students time to get to the castle in the carriages, while the first years got across the loch. I could be very wrong, but I feel that J.K.ROWLING had Loch Ness in mind when writing the books.
To be fair, Loch Ness Is significantly bigger, but I don't think Cherry Island has a castle on it, much less a ruined castle!

Hey J and Ben. I really like your videos, very informative. That said, I went on google earth and found the exact spot where your location for that castle on the lake is and it doesn't show that blurred spot. But in any case other than that if you watch a series named "Time Team", it's about
archeology, and in many places all over Britain where there were big castles, sometimes remains just a few walls and in other cases nothing above ground and the team must dig to find walls. And that pictures you showed look like it could have been quite sizable castles. I recommend that you'll go and check it out.

This got me thinking, as a Scandinavian this map shows Durmstrang appearing along southern Finland, Estonia or Latvia.
It's described as being in the far northern Europe, and Several times been hinted at as being in Scandinavia.
However in terms of how the movies portray the people it does seem like it hints at it being more eastern.
Additionally what doesn't make sense to me is what language is education in the schools when there are some many different languages in Europe?
Like Scandinavians can understand each other after some practice, but a Norwegian would have a hard time understanding Estonian, and not only that they'd have an easier time with English and travelling to Scotland.
So what gives Rowling? How is Durmstrang so diverse where language almost always is gonna be a problem with such a wide range of areas it probably has to cover, and why is Hogwarts so restricted that only people from the UK attends it?
Because Hogwarts is allowed for muggleborns and half breeds. However Durmstrang is not the same, they only seem to allow students who are pure-blood or half-blood. Hogwarts seems to only admit students from UK because there other wizarding schools around the globe

I use Glenfinnan Viaduct as a point of reference when trying to find Hogwarts on a muggle map...
InventorZahran 327 I’m utter shocked that wasn’t the go to place especially because it’s a lot simpler and they basically put the castle on that Loch and mix it with Loch Lomond and Glen Coe

I believe that Hogwarts is in Argyllshire, Scotland. This is because in the prisoner of Azkaban the fat lady hides in a map of argyllshire. Don’t you think that a map would be quite a strange thing to hang in the castle, but it wouldn’t be if Hogwarts was located there. It was actually the super Carlin bros who brought this info to me in one of their J vs Ben video. I thought that J would bring this fact up in this video.
Yes, me too. Check out Kilchurn Castle on Lochawe. Its close to a railway station, there's a railway pier where the first years' boats can leave from, its accessible by road for the thestral carriages and there are massive tracts of forestry plantation all round it. Case closed 😎

Ive been to all of these places with my dad as a child in the 90s it was an amazing time away from home we visited that lake hiked through some of the cairngorm mountains and even rode the steamtrain that goes over the viaduct in the films (the only route in scotland with a steamtrain and a viaduct)...its really awesome how you pieced this all together :) i have a theory myself of where hogwarts might be but only the location makes sense where as everything here makes sense ;) love the work guys
