You used to be able to make mazes for the zombies with dirt walls. They would not beat on them and hit your spikes while you ran along the tops. A17 and A18 it was my horde night base. I stopped when they let them dig down because I thought they could break the dirt.
As a long time dirt user, welcome to the Dirt League! Dirt also works for nerd poling up places, blocking doorways during missions and is super fast to duplicate. I typically carry 3 dirt blocks with me at all times - can also craft cobblestone on the run to save inventory space and get a jump on building needs. Dirt. It's the new thing.
Did my own test, and the one caveat to all this is that demos will indeed destroy dirt if you hit their explosion, so depending on how much you lean on a dirt strategy you'd have to be super duper extra careful not to set off demos. Otherwise, damn, this is such a game changer. I just started an insane+deathless run, and one of my strategies has been to build small zombie killing areas outside POIs so I can use the strongest weapon in the game (architecture) - but now I'm thinking I can incorporate a dropper design + dirt build so even if I get 10 zeds piling out of a building I don't have to worry about getting overrun. Edit: just made it in testing and it works a treat. Probably don't need to bother with such an elaborate design until T2, or maybe even T3, but it's good to have in the pocket. I'll see if I can share a screenie somewhere.
OMG....after all the hours I have spent creating bases....I feel sooo....stupid....lmao....glad I saw this, wanted a new and different base..now I got one...inspiring!!
Dirty deeds done dirt cheap. I started experimenting with it 3-4 weeks ago. Found that zombies would attack it much less then regular blocks. My favorite for strength is asphalt (1500 hp) , and topsoil for filling. Yes, i filled in a PoI with topsoil , and made a nice base atop of that. Moat around it too. Weakness is cop and demolition explosions. I guess TFP could "fix" it by duplicating the craftable dirt/ground like blocks so they look the same, but act like regular player placed blocks. Or , most likely, just make them uncraftable.
The reason this works is because you are building "up". If you build a mine shaft with a defensive wall of terrain, the zombies will get to the wall and go into Dig mode through the wall. The only thing you have to worry about is if you build it too long, on horde night it will count as a spawn point, dirt, gravel, topsoil, or anything else you can create in a cement mixer. This was a building method in A20 in the Rebirth mod because he's got giant zombies that start appearing, after level 30, that are just walking explosions (literally every step is like a demo explosion) but to prevent those zombies from getting stuck in holes they create for themselves he made all the terrain blocks immune.
So many applications... this blows my mind. For my current play through, base with attached horde bases. Of course protect your pillars, but two blocks around your fancy poi base and they won't break through that fancy poi you want to keep intact. This is crazy. Literally no mats, your initial shovel, and one dirt block and you could have your first horde base 😮
It's not unpatchable: they already distinguish between worldgen and player placed blocks. They just need to use that flag to allow zombies targeting dirt and your base is done.
oh that looks sooo fun! I need to try it! And in fact it looks and feels more realistic to me to use dirt and mud in a solo apocalyptic adventure than concrete or even cobblestone. I love it
I’m currently doing a pretty sweet build into a mountain between the snow and desert biome right now. Creating Castle Grayskull! My biggest problem is not being able to have access to dev tools and editing, as I’m on console. So building high and big without being able to fly is becoming difficult. Plus no one shot rock tool. Have to pickaxe by hand. So frustrating. Always out of stamina digging or falling and breaking my leg.
Eh I doubt they'd patch that because time wise you're spending more time digging dirt, then making dirt, then placing dirt, then redigging the dirt up. It would be easier to just dig until you get the clay you need. Especially when it's only a couple extra clay after doing that list. Cool in theory, but not in practice
@@BuzzedKitty The thing about TFP... is that they would totally patch something that almost no one does and is just kind of a silly thing that makes you go "huh" and doesnt really affect gameplay. Well... looks like the AI changed with 1.1 so this base didn't survive day 21. They went straight for digging the dirt up after going through the loop the very first time. Damn.

I had heard elsewhere to put dirt around your pillars to protect against zombies. I have never seen one where the whole base was made of dirt! Great job Josh.
They actually can target terrain blocks. I made a mod that removes their ability to target blocks or go into destroy area, sometimes they will still randomly smack a block still. If the player is under ground they will also go straight to digging to try to reach the player, even though they shouldnt be able to target blocks at all. There is some hard-coded stuff at work. I suspect if you gave them no other option to reach you (such as standing on a dirt covered pillar) they would target the blocks then, however since they have a path it takes preference over trying to break terrain.
now completely cover a small base in mud and fire up some Furness's and see if it fixes the screamers, if so you can make a screamer proof Furness base

Topsoil changes based on the biome it's placed in. If it's desert topsoil will look like sand if you are in burnt forest it will look like burnt ground and so on for the different area's.
I see a few problems. They are probably going to change how much clay that you get when you dig up topsoil and that will suck early game. The fun pimps could also change what the game sees as map generated terrain and player placed terrain. They will more than likely change how much damage cops do to dirt. I hope I'm wrong though

now a good question would be seeing if this works kind of like the old "to world bottom droppers" we never really built a pathway for zombies to escape those. so if you could make your base/convert poi and dig a mote around it with the dropper and path out for them, and not build up only dig would that work the same
tested it out myself, other then one sometimes getting stuck on the wedge to help push them over now and then it does work just building a pit and mote. not sure the minimum width the mote has to be, i made mine 5 wide and 8 deep, when they would go into destroy area they just ran back up the path i made
Top soil, dirt, stone and clay blocks are the terrain blocks you typically can make. They're either made on yourself or the mixer and forge. There are others but those are technically like asphault and special stone type or path type blocks. Surprised ya don't know this.
In a previous alpha (don't remember which one), natural generated dirt blocks were immune to cop spit. I definitely didn't exploit that to make a cop spit proof dropper 😂
This might totally negate screamers, too! Just work away in your Earth ship and let them run. Would they eventually time out and potentially drop loot bags?
In my most recent game I had a perpetual loop system (15 high base and a dropper path I could turn on when I didn't want to fight zeds), and at one point I took my headphones off and thus couldn't hear when screamers had been there for a while. Had a massive horde of zombies including screamers that had summoned screamers, but as far as I could tell there was no despawning; they all just hung around doing the loop.
Someone didn’t watch the entire video did they? He was in a horde night test at the very end of the video. He just didn’t say that because he thought it would be obvious.
@Jawoodle you want an interesting idea to try mate ? I had a bridge with electric fence post under it (well it was the catwalk bridge on the Judie witch poi silo I put the electric fence post under the catwalk pointing toward the silo) the cop broke the catwalk bridge it was 3 tiles wide and the electric fence is 2 tiles and they walked across the electric fence and jumped the 1 tile gap to get to me, could be interesting to see you give this your 2cents.
@@pbsixgun6 funny thing was I turn off the fence so the zombies could get closer to use my melee so I actually don't know if they got stunned when they hit the end
Anyone else thinking that they just didn´t figure out yet, why they don´t attack after falling from 12 or more blocks? And that this propably won´t last forever?
Yeah, since player made terrains have the same code as world ones in most cases… i really don’t think this is even patchable hahaha. Not without a 100% rework of the entire pathing system

You can create stone, destroyed stone, dirt, gravel, topsoil & asphalt. Not sure why sand isn't an option 🤷♂
Because it’s an ingredient for concrete. Requiring a workstation/harvesting adds another hurdle for reaching that tier.
Gravel is the sand really
If you are in the desert "Topsoil" will look like sand, that one matches where it is placed.

Top soil, dirt, stone and clay blocks are the terrain blocks you typically can make. They're either made on yourself or the mixer and forge. There are others but those are technically like asphault and special stone type or path type blocks. Surprised ya don't know this.
Yay! More JaWoodle park!
Minecraft dirt house for the win!
Finally my sand castle can come to life!!!!
Just have a little sledgey boi bonking the zombies and it will be full afk :P even have something to spawn in the zombies to farm them XD
No horde night test? Would have also liked to see cobble opposed to concrete to see if this is viable from day 7 on.
Someone didn’t watch the entire video did they? He was in a horde night test at the very end of the video. He just didn’t say that because he thought it would be obvious.
Shouldn't dynamic mesh do the trick for render distance? Maybe try to up the range and turn off claim block only.
Babe, look! New theory on ancient mound-building cultures just dropped!
What about an internal layer of dirt so you keep the aesthetics but have the backup dirt wall
So dirt around the coffee shop lol
So here's the question. If that works, then why do they burrow into a mountainside base vs coming down the planned path?
that's the best possible path, thru the mountain. this has a different path but by using the dropper they just keep going round in circles
Down has the hard-coded 'DIG' built in now to stop the 'bedrock bases'.
Hmm...Now if you deliberately made a vertical electrical line off the top of that.....
Nice. It's time to get down and dirty 😎
