Here is "Battle Hymn of the Republic" as written by Julia Ward Howe when she published it in February, 1862, in The Atlantic Monthly.

How well I remember! Before the old school burnt down, every child from 4th grade to 7th would meet in the auditorium on Friday for music. If you sang, you’d sit on the right side, if you did not, you’d sit on the left and be the audience. I have sat on both sides. However, it was a requirement that all students, whether they sang or not learn “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” That was mandatory. When it was sung, every student was required to stand at attention and show respect. That song was always sung. Most kids now have never heard “The Battle Hymn of the Republic.” There is a message in that song and most people are missing it.

My church in Canada sang this on Sunday but with more of the lyrics. We are praying for the States, and for our own country. The words seemed to touch a lot of people very deeply. It was the first of the worship songs we sang.

On 8/27/2012 I had been praying in a park, when the Lord started telling me of the judgments coming to America. He emphasized food shortages, chaos in the cities, rampant crime, and so much more. I then had a very brief, kind of mini-vision of a west coast mega-tsunami and a rapture like event where other people (that I hadn't seen before) were rising up in the sky in the most incredibly joyous manner. It could have been dead souls, but the joy was so palpable - I could FEEL (& hear) the music to When The Saints Go Marching In! For that reason I believe it was the Rapture, & that we were not dead souls resulting from the tsunami.
When I pressed the Lord in prayer for a sense of the timing of when these events would begin, He told me 2020. Looking at all the craziness that began early that year, it seems 100% accurate.
This song should be our battle cry! The Lord is coming back soon!! First He comes in the air, as the Groom for His bride (the remnant). Then 7 years after that He returns as the conquering King to vanquish all the rebellious, & unrepentantly wicked people, & every evil entity.
In the meantime, we must guard our hearts and practice spiritual warfare at all times. If you don't KNOW spiritual warfare, I encourage you to learn fast. You're going to need it! The attacks are ramping up against every believer.
We are weary, but not defeated! Jesus has already won the war - but we must still fight our battles. But only for a little while longer! ⌛

Stanza number five has a critical word changed from the original, that was also sung by Union soldiers from 1863 on. "While we strive to make men whole let us die (not live) to make men free" . This shows that people were willing to give their lives to end slavery. I think it's a sacrilege to changer this! WHY this is allowed is beyond comprehension. The writer, Julia Ward Howe who penned this in 1861, deserved better.
