Why TikTok is Messing with your Brain (On Purpose) | Salari

  • Oh boy, it finally happened, a video on TikTok...
    As you know, TikTok is massive right now, especially among younger, more impressionable audiences. At this time, it's difficult to quantify the effect social media has on a developing brain, but over time it's becoming apparent that what people see online can be incredibly convincing and influential, messing with their self-image and even how they perceive reality.
    This video looks at how TikTok (and by extent other social media) affects children, teens, and even young adults. We'll also explore how the platform actively promotes impossible to achieve beauty standards and wealth, while shaming and shunning users who don't adhere to these standards. We'll also briefly touch on the disturbing amount of control the Chinese government has over the app, such as its censorship of posts critical of it.

    Because of my ADHD, I have limited my social media to Facebook, TH-cam, and a couple niche hobby sites.
    It sucks, honestly. The FOMO is strong, particularly with Twitter and TikTok. I feel like there's this huge part of our global culture that I'm missing. But I know that, in the end, it's a lot better for me.

      It is. TH-cam shorts are destroying my time management. I use TH-cam like 10 hours a day (listen in the background while I work) and I'm seriously considering dropping youtube completely with how often I find myself losing time to the shorts. Everytime I search for videos I'm exposed to those stupid shorts over and over. Can't resist them forever. Removing temptation has always worked better, far better, for me

    I would’ve rolled my eyes to “kids are impressionable” as a kid 😭
    Here’s what would’ve got through to me then: our ability to control impulses and make decisions is something that develops over time.
    Those areas of our brain aren’t fully developed until we’re 25. You can improve them yourself with practice, but full development doesn’t happen until then.
    Companies know this through research. They will use your developing brain to their advantage. Their goal is to make money.
    If you learn the signs of media manipulation, you can make choices you want to make, instead of choices they want you to make.
    I thought this was a great video. Thanks for bringing some coverage to this with some humor.

      Kids usually do the opposite of what the previous generation does. So what would get through is to show a bunch of GenXers/boomers using TikTok the way everyone's aunt now uses Facebook to post pictures of your baby nephew.
      The hippies gave birth to yuppies. Yuppies gave birth to slackers. Slackers gave birth to this new crop which will be forced to deal with some serious global problems so they'll end up being super serious. And then their kids will be useless like the hippies.

It really concerns me that there are so few spaces online for minors to spend time and socialize with each other without predators; certainly there have always been predators on sites catering to minors but at least Neopets and Club Penguin didn't have the kids' real faces and details of their environment that make them easier targets. The internet opened up a whole new venue for them to access kids, and it's even easier because it's anonymous for the predator and there's often no parental oversight for the kids. But the way society works now you're considered a pariah if you don't use social media so most kids have no choice if they want any kind of social life. The clear diffrence between the creation of older social media platforms like youtube or Facebook (not to mention their predecessors) and the creation of apps like tiktok is that the former were created to realize actual posibilities created by the web. Sure they were profit driven and it made them worse for users over time but they were created in times when web wasn't such a huge market and they at least represent cool, new, unique ideas that were ruined by capitalism. On the other hand new apps like tik-tok are pure commodities, typical "innovations" that capitalism offer, nothing groundbreaking, repackaged ideas with some gimmicks, just companies finding ways to make existing products even more profitable (which in case of SM just means more addictive).

    • @thewolfstarfire
      @thewolfstarfire 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Agreed! Tiktok is made from the research of how to captivate people and unfortunately its quite twisted. From my personal experience, Tiktok would bring my emotions on a rollercoaster because of the intensity of varied tiktoks showed at me. I would see two funny tiktoks, then two tiktoks which is “the world is ending” etc etc. Did I train my Tiktok to be like that? Yes. Did I mean too? No. That fine line is accidentally giving into the algorithm by keeping me addicted by making me want dopamine after seeing something extremely bad. I want more, but immediately I’m angry again after two tiktoks.
      Also, tiktok has been sending me spam text messages despite not giving them my real phone number. AND I started to seeing tiktoks related to shit I only looked up on my Safari. I didn’t search it up at all on Tiktok. Tiktok is really shady.

    having grown up with ADHD symptoms my whole life with no access to social media until middle school and even then limited access, then getting diagnosed in the first year of high school, the problems with ADHD and social media really scare me. I'm afraid of misinformation spreading, and of the backlash then gatekeeping ADHD just when most people are still learning that ADHD isn't just "look a squirrel!" stereotypes but a disorder that can affect all executive functions, and I'm scared of continued fearmongering around meds that people need and access getting even more difficult, and of the accusations that "barely anyone actually has ADHD they're just lazy/faking for attention/made their own attention spans short on social media therefore any problems they have are their fault" that I've already seen both on and offline. i do obviously want the link to be further explored so we can know the truth and help people but the way society will react either way and already is reacting is absolutely abysmal. please, a short incomplete list of symptoms is never enough to self-diagnose off of, and claiming someone is faking a disorder unless you have verifiable actual proof is just so scummy and does nothing but make disabled people's lives worse. this is more of an add-on to the video than a response. especially since everyone seems focused on how social media shortens attention spans then links that to ADHD symptoms without connecting the dots to any other symptoms, like the interest-based rather than importance-based motivation, executive dysfunction actively interfering with completing tasks, hyperfixations where you become so focused on something you lose the ability to disengage from it (because ADHD isn't actually a lack of attention span but a lack of CONTROL over your attention), etc, and overall it seems really reductive and I'm really really hoping that people will learn about this stuff from actual credible sources and that the research is conducted by people who aren't holding biases of ADHD being mainly a cis white male child disorder.

      @plants_before_people5329 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yes, and also important to note is that just as with autism ADHD isn't something you get, it's something that is part of you and always has and always will be. Certain things (like tiktok) can make the symptoms much more obvious, but the apps do not cause ADHD. It's a biological difference in your brain, not a developed behavioural issue

    • @MsLeanneO
      @MsLeanneO 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t think these studies are distinguishing the difference between having focus disregulation, which is a symptom of ADHD and ADHD Itself. You don’t have to have ADHD to have focus disregulation. I think this is very dangerous consider how misunderstood ADHD is to the majority of people.
      People with ADHD are A-Neurotypical meaning their brains themselves function very differently than a Neurotypical person. Sometimes this means you can physically see the difference between the two on brain scans. A Neurotypical person can develop focus disregulation but that doesn’t mean they now have ADHD. You can’t develop ADHD as a Neurotyical person. ADHD is caused by internal cognitive brain function not external factors like social media.
      ADHD is criminally under diagnosed in women who tend to present different symptoms. Let’s spread awareness and understanding.

      I'm lucky, I don't have a business or anything like that so I can just ignore the hell sites.
      Although even then, I'd avoid it because the website started misgendering me on an account that was never identified with any gender but woman. I think it heard my voice and just decided I was lying about myself- and that's not even to get into the whole part where it actively promotes bigotry in the timeline and I don't need that in my life.

      It's very difficult to avoid FB, it has become so ingrained in our society. Even my local national weather service office only posts updates there. That and TH-cam are the only ones I use, simply because they provide content I can't get elsewhere.

    Good video as usual! Except ducks don't struggle to float, since they have extra insulating feathers that leave lots of air between the outer layer and skin. Ducks actually have trouble diving, because they float towards the surface constantly.
    That said, I'm glad I got to grow up without the internet. I feel social pressures very strongly, and can't imagine what this social media hellscape would have done to my young mind.

      Also goldfish don't have 9 second attention spans. That's a myth based in the false assumption that they couldn't form proper memories. An idea debunked by a child when they actually tested the memory of a tank of goldfish by using a lego block to signify feeding time and effectively conditioning then.
      I would have thought that Salari would know to question ubiquitously "known" ""facts"".

      And yea, having grown up on web 1 and web 2, being the generation at the turning point of internet becoming an essential and not a luxury... I was taken advantage of online as a kid repeatedly by some not so good people. And I was internet smart, I'd been taught the whole "don't trust anybody online" thing long before I used the internet for anything other than receiving funny emails from my nan. I can't imagine the kids today who are just dumped into the netscape and left to figure out everything alone.

    So adhd is a neurodevelopmental disorder, anf its generally understood that you are born with adhd. For the adhd and media use study, another way to interpret it could be that people with adhd are more prone to use social media heavily and this therefore worsen their symptoms. I only could find a resume of the study online so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

    I ended up deleting tiktok sometime last year. After a couple months, I tried installing it again, realized why I uninstalled so I unistalled again. As much as the trends were fun, you can always see those trends on youtube or something. Tiktok is just so damaging that it's not worth it.

    I've always avoided getting into tiktok especially, at first it was mostly because I don't usually like following something very big and mainstream as it's popularity doesn't usually last that long after the initial hype so I don't bother with it much
    But I did watch re-uploaded tiktok videos on TH-cam and it made me glad that I never got the app to begin with because I could easily end up scrolling for hours on end and get nothing done! It already happened several times with TH-cam shorts and I hate it, so much time passes without me noticing
    I've seen it negatively affect attention spans as well, my younger siblings can't Pay attention to anything that isn't very short or simplistic anymore or without music, even my mother watches so much tiktok that she doesn't even want to watch any TV shows or even videos longer than 5 minutes as it's too long for her to watch, yet she spends many hours of the day on tiktok alone

    I have a very complicated relationship with social media, specially places like instagram, facebook and twitter, i barely go there, but when i do, i manage to stay for a very short time and barely really interact (like, comment, watch a video, post anything), but with places like tiktok the thing changes. Maybe i went there to follow a creator i like on youtube to show support and then suddently im watching 5 different videos in different topics and am sometimes unable to even notice it. What i mean is that although i like tiktok for its ability to find the niche you love and show you things you appreciate, i also hate it for it, and for how addicting it can feel.
    Anyway, great video as always! and i love your shoutouts! i always find great artists and inspiration through it
    hope your doing great 🖤

    I love TikTok but also hate it. I have ADHD, and am very dopamine seeking. It can be a huge problem with TikTok as I can keep scrolling for hours and hours. I still use it because of all of the information I get from it, along with the tons of cat accounts I keep up with. It's really frustrating because of how addicting it can be.
    A huge issue with TikTok is misinfo, though. So many fitness/diet people that lie about ingredients and products. It can be really scary how many people are lied to.

I just followed colleagues and accounts about plants, flowers, nature, ect… but the feeling that everyone else was doing something inspiring while I was not made me feel incredibly lonely and sad. The FOMO was intense. If I saw someone post something similar to I did but they got more likes, I felt excluded. If I DID get a lot of likes, it doesn’t make me feel good either, though. Social Approval Indicators are toxic hands down

    As a 20-something that avoided TikTok for years, I just recently finally gave in and checked it out after seeing so many videos about how it works and its dangers. Knowing how the algorithm works, I exclusively focused on things that give me comfort and happiness. Now every time I use it, it's nice animal and wildlife videos that I almost always come away feeling better after using. I almost never feel that way from any other social media platform.
    What I'm getting at is that with significant discipline and knowledge, I think it has potential as a good platform. What's missing is the platform making something like that more accessible.

    It's super weird to me how so many people are talking about everyone being rich, thin, and cool. I follow a lot of neurodivergeant, feminist, plus size creators and my feed is really joyful. I understand a lot of younger people with less experience may thing those things aren't fun or desirable, but a lot of the young creators I follow aren't like that. I think these critiques tend to sweeping generalizations when TikTok is too subjective based on a single person's feed. You can curate a feed to be more positive for your mental health, and maybe younger people aren't doing that but I've had so many positive changes in my life (learning about fat acceptance, finding a therapist, finding the conscious parenting community) through TikTok. Yes, there's lots of goofing off, makeup stuff, funny dances, etc. but those are just small section of TikTok.

    1-3 minutes is a standard competition performance length.
    It used to be videos.
    Then Instagram gave us 15 seconds which wasn’t enough.
