I’ve been working night shift for almost 15 years now, I love it. Less people, less personalities, less drama, less management, more money and I get a lot done during the day before I sleep. Day shift co workers are always complaining of everything that happens during the day. I keep a well balanced life with exercise 6 days a week, and I always take my healthy food and snacks for the munchies in the middle of the night. But it’s not for everyone.
I consider you lucky lol I've been working night shifts for a while too now but I feel drained everyday and no matter how much sleep I get. I do get my 8 hours of sleep during the day, I'll go to bed at sunrise and then wake up in the middle of the day but I'll have at least four or five hours in the day to do the stuff that I need to do before either crashing from early evening (before sunset) to the middle of the night on an off day or I would have to cut my day even shorter to try to take a nap before going into work at 10:00 because without that nap I would be even more exhausted. I do feel like my mood has changed a bit, I have been feeling a bit more irritable and frustrated more easily and I do think my social skills have gone down because the peak of my energy now is in the middle of the night when I'm working but there's hardly anybody to talk to but I'm too tired to talk to anybody during the day but it's all subjective and I'm glad it works out for you.
I'm 32 and have done night shift for 4 years total and the sat 15 months. I'm down with it, I'm getting on days in the next month. It's not worth any money. For those who are just considering it, don't do it. Irritation, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, bad diet, and more. U feel like absolute crap 24/7. I will never do night shift again in my life. It is brutal to your body and mind.
i understand how you feel, i find myself falling asleep later and later after work. i get out of work ag 6 in the morning and sometimes i dont fall asleep until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. ive been doing this shift for 6 months now and its been the worst 6 months of my life, i rarely clean anymore, i dont see my family or friends anymore, and i eat like crap and drink a lot more alcohol. i would never recommend midnights to anyone
i've been in night shift since 2012 :/ from 9pm to 5-6 am 5 days a week...in summer its 6 days a week...it feels like somebody is sucking life out me through a straw...if you can avoid night shift work avoid it at all costs
I have noticed that my memory, problem solving, attitude management and even consideration for others all be compromised as a result of working night shift. Fair play lasting 15 years, I've only been at it 15 months haha
i have worked night shift for 3 years now, but i adapted easily because i have been nocturnal my entire life, the thing you gotta know about night shift is that you absoultley have to be someone that can sleep comfortably during the day, if you cant do this because you have too many pets, or too many kids that depend on you, or people that constantly wake you up to ask you favors and errands, with their horrible music and power tool noise, then you cant work night shift, simple as that.
I’m depressed & anxious regardless so I choose night shift because it’s less people to deal with and less things going on that will potentially ruin my mood
I’ve done shifts (including nights) for almost 18 years. I’ve been ruined by it. My dad was exactly the same and was like a bear with a sore head for the entire time. He switched over to days and was a brand new person, a really lovely guy.
Anyone else get better overall working night shift? Once I started working night shift I got healthier and my mood got better. I started working out and eating healthy and started reading again, the stores are always empty in the mornings, so it's nice. I have time for doctor appointments and things like that. I think if you are an introverted person, night shift might be for you. I noticed that I was depressed and very unhealthy working day shifts, so I think for some people they can adjust or it's just better for them to work night shift.
same here. I feel way better since i don"t wake up with an alarm. It changed everything. When i"m done sleeping, i wake up. That"s it. The alarm in the morning was the worst for me. Plus, everything is quiet during a night shift, less stress equals less cortisol. So, if you"re looking to go Night Worker, don"t be discourage by this video. I guess some of us were night animals in another life ;-)
I know a father and son who worked night shift at a local factory. The father died young and the son is rapidly debilitating too and he's a best friend. Both were trapped into earning night shift money, but neither lived or had a life. Take note!
Been on night shift for 7yrs and I live alone. What I've done to combat it. - I stopped smoking weed. - I stopped drinking - I make sure I workout, run,run stairs, skip, lift, jog. - I eat well and intake lots of fruit and veggies. Vitamin D supplements. - Make sure room is COMPLETELY dark and cool at all times. Use "white noise" like a fan or white noise machine. I dont like ear plugs and stuff on my face. Seal the windows in your room from light. - When you can (preferably not before sleep) expose yourself to the sun. Even if you have to sit in front of a window in your house or apartment for 20 to 40min please do so. You wont always be able to get direct sun so when you can please do. - try to keep a similar sleep schedule to your night shift routine on your off days (this is important) the bouncing around will throw the body into chaos. Easier said then done but try. The downside. -Mood swings (Yes not fun) - irritability: Try to be patient with people and inform your friends and family you are working nights so they are aware you might be in a mood to RIP someone's face off... but try to be patient. -depression: its bound to happen. This is why eating well and exercise is important. It will combat this. You will get depression. - loss of libido: Unfortunately this will be effected. Your hormonal release is out of whack, you are not rested much at all so yes, becareful and dont forget exercise and supplements. VITAL! - Social life: you will likely become a hermit because you dont feel like doing much, to tired for social gatherings and would prefer to sleep and be comfy at home most days. Therefore, try to still go out and engage and when your tired go home. This part sucks. Relationships: If you are married I hope you have a loyal and committed partner... if you are not married it will be impossible for you to find love working these hours. Inform your significant of your hours and hope they are understanding but there are big challenges in this department. Dont work them if you dont have to bottom line. Good luck to everyone.
I've been working nightshift for 5 years. Good tips. I've been doing all but eventually times to times a feel soooo tired on eeeeeverything. I want sun light, I miss my day life. I'll quit soon that job. The necessity brought me to that night shift job. I'm saving some money so I can star my own business. Perhaps, part time job during the day. And let's see what happens!! I know, everyone is different, different life style, different everything!! Maybe you can do great working nights 10, 20 or 30 years, who knows but nights are for sleep and your body knows it 🤷♂️
I don't work shift work, I work permanent night shift. I have black out curtains and take a sleep aid. It is essential that you keep your night shift schedule even on your two days off. Accept your shift and live it or die tryin. It is far worse on your body if you try to live a normal life on your 2 days off, that is where people run into trouble. I think we need a little more sleep as a night shifter because our bodies continually try to fight it. That is the key, mental attitude and acceptance is a huge part of it. Its hard enough to physically fight your Circadian Rhythm, but if you mentally fight it too, its not going to end well.
Lori Thoelke your 100% right. I'm a night shift worker 10pm to 6am, been doing it for 3 years now and figured its easier to work nights once you except the night shift lifestyle
I've been at the night shift for 10 years and function both at work and at home fairly comfortably. I found that in my observations one of the largest determining factors for poor health was Diet as night shift workers amongst police, nurses, and doormen usually only have access to fast food places and sugary vending machines. You and I should compare notes sometime.
Been working night shift for 3yrs. I did 10pm-6am, and right now I’m working 5pm-5:30am. It’s finally gotten to the point where I am constantly tired almost no matter how much sleep I get. Balancing school during the afternoon is getting harder and harder. After this video I might switch to days I have an offer I might actually do it. Thank you sir!
I work nights at a hotel, I work 4 nights a week 10 till 7am all on my own, literally never have time for friends family. I'm always exhausted and lazy becuase of it and I dont even get a penny more than minimum wage for working the shifts. Nights are NOT worth it, my health has dropped so much and I've started to notice I'm just not happy anymore with anything
Please respect yourself more by leaving !!! It’s not worth your health I promise you. Find a normal day working job or don’t work at all. Your health always comes first
So I have watched enough videos. I have been working night shift for 3 years now. Ear plugs, black out curtains, mask , make your room cool and go to sleep. Also do intermittent fasting , going to bed while fasted is really great. I have 3 kids, this sort of schedule allows me to spend far more time with them. I have never been depressed. When I go to the zoo with the little ones it's like the zoo is opened just for me . It's a blessing. I also leave out plenty of time for my wife to go and do chores during the day and I can do a lot of stuff as well as all the government entities are open. Also as I said above I do a lot of intermittent fasting and this sort of schedule makes it so much easier. I don't eat anything during the night shift, I have a good lunch and some sort of a light dinner and I'm good. I am not a scientist, every damn scientist is saying it will have negative impact, well it could, but when you weigh in the negative impact of having to go through traffic on a daily basis 5/2 i.e work in standard business hours with thousands of people, see your boss everyday?!? I think the positive effects far outweigh the negatives.
Exactly my thoughts. Most of the complaining is about people being sleep deprived. The fact you have kids and work the night shift, yet still don't feel sleep deprived, is a promising testimony.
I think it depends on the person. Ever since quarantine, I accidentally shifted my schedule to sleeping at 4am or later. I feel fine because as long as I sleep enough hours like 8+ hours even if I sleep late it's fine. I feel like this sleep study thing needs to account for things like people switching back to sleeping a normal time after the days with the night shift. Like 3 days night shift and the rest of the week normal sleep time and whether if it's just the confounding factor of people sleeping LESS because of night shift.
One of the many Joy's of working nights...having friends and family that know your schedule and still show up at your home unannounced and uninvited in the middle of the day and pound on your door and call and text nonstop.
I've been 8 years on a second shift position, and enjoy! I work 4-10's, with a 3 day weekend! Being middle age, no kids, very low stress, traffic, day shift pressure, my company pays 20% shift differential, which ads $10K to yearly salary. It's a good position considering no home family issues, I find it very relaxing, my partner works days, so we spend time together on weekends, and I believe less stress on our relationship, my favorite benefit is driving home at 2am, no traffic, shopping at 3am, it's a whole different world! and I like it! Only problem is, I don't get shit done at home weekly, until the weekend, like mowing the lawn, and making any noise at 3am!
I love the second shift, but i definitely try to get to bed around midnight if i can. True night shift However is not for me at all. I like the nights but i just cannot sleep during day. Also why i try to get to bed around midnight.
I have been working the Graveyard Shift for 15 years and I have adapted to those hours. My internal clock works perfectly so that I can set my mind to an hour or two nap and wake up like clockwork. I am happy all the time and I do not suffer from mood swings or depression nor do I take a sleep aid to be able to sleep. I am healthy and my heart rate is normal despite the fact that I am 65 years old and I don't need a blue pill to stay up. I enjoy having the daytime off, especially in the summertime, and don't mind working the night time which is probably why I have been successful working this shift. I pass my medical exams with flying colors and I eat breakfast, lunch and dinner as any person who works the day shift although my lunch comes a little later in the afternoon. I exercise very little and I drink alcohol in abundance on my days off...perhaps I'll survive the next ten years which is when I will retire...only time will tell.
People can smoke cigaretts their whole life without developing cancer. That doesn't mean smoking isn't bad. Just because you or a small 10% is living an okey life working nightshift. Don't make nightshift or shit s for that matter good. I hate working shift work, especially night shit. I and many others got depressed and were underpreforming at work.
why are you retiring at 75....you probably do absolutely nothing on your job but make sure your patents are sleep. I have been on 3rd shift for 8 years working for Coca Cola and I have had open heart surgery, my blood pressure is always high and I'm always feeling half sleepy...this is not the life for me
Thank you for this video. But many countries in the world couldn't care less about their employees or juniors. Night shifts have made our lives miserable and full of the torment of fear. I remember getting a light department for about 8 months or so. I remember I have never been so alive in a long time because I could actually rest during my night shifts. It changed my entire life for that period of time. That's how serious night shifts are in relation to what you are becoming in life. Change your line of work while you can. Night shifts are not worth it. Really.
It's not so bad. I get to watch TH-cam and neflix all night. Not too many people bother me. I took a paycut even to do the night shift (part of that was a manager I hated, had to get away) but I am happy. How did things turn out for you? I see it's been a month since this post.
Ashley Poorman it’s been good! The salary raise I get from working night shift makes a huge difference since I just finished university! Also it’s a lot calmer at night at the hospital so I have more time to learn! It’s been a lot easier than I thought and it’s actually easier for me than working during the day! (Less traffic, not having to wake up early, always getting 8hrs of sleep)
@@Loufoca13 are you still working nights? ii just started.. bought a sleep mask . and have glasses.. i work in a cleanroom so i dont see the outside during my 12 hour shift. so theres plenty of light.. im just not used to sleeping .. and my first night shift i woke up at 5am.. started my shift 6pm and got off work at 6am.. so i was awake for 25 hours .. felt so weird and out of it .. hopefully i can adjust..
I had trouble sleeping at night so I switched from working days to night shift. I've been on nightshift for 5yrs; biggest mistake of my life. I'm praying I can go back to days and just take a sleep aide to help me sleep at night. The money is not worth my health.
I’ve been working midnight shift for more than 3 years. No issues at all physically or mentally. Just take care of your body mind and soul just as you would working a regular day shift. There is an adjustment period. That’s the worst part. Lasted ~2 months for me.
I've been on nightshift for 1yrs 3 months now...and I went from happy-go-lucky daytime woman to angry night demon..pray for me cause, I didnt realize being on nightshift would effect my mood so much.
Last night of nightshift after 3 years tonight, I'm so stoked. Tried everything to make it work including, exercise, eating healthy, blackout curtains, white noise, dropped caffeine, same schedule on days off, expensive bed, still nothing really works. I have about 3 years of sleep debt. Was lucky if I got 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
When I tell you!! I HATE being awake during the day! I've struggled and tortured my self trying to live a "normal" life. When I got out of high school and started working grave shift it was SUCH a game changer I was SO alive during the night with NO problems I slept a full natural easy 8 hours everyday including the weekend. I lived almost 100% my life in the nigjt. The only thing was I wanted to be "normal" so I jo9ned the.military and it has been torture. When I get out I'm going to see what I can do to work a night shift. I was never depressed being awake at night It was the happiest I'd ever been. As soon as that sun light hit my body was like yup time to go to be naturally. This fight to have to figure a way to sleep at night has been a nightmare!!
I’ve been on nights for two years and I am constantly trying hold it together. Regular panic attacks, mood swings, and depression. I hate it, but I feel trapped by my job
Same here for over a decade- it really screws up your perception, cognition and your well-being. I was clinically depressed and now, I def don’t have that anymore. No more night shifts.
I’ve been doing 15 years of night shift ..4 per week usually .. I’m in my 30s and I have so many allergies, gray hair, half bald almost, etc. No sugar issues so far; in fact, it’s usually lower than normal. And I do eat rice for lunch and dinner everyday. My weight has been always normal. I have memory issues lately. And I feel like my cognitive abilities decreased. I need a day job I guess.
That was a very long and fancy way to say "take naps and dont eat junk." I was offered a night shift position in security. Turned it down. Not ruining my health for 12$hr.
I have been working on the night shift for around eight years. I believe I have adapted quite well. I eat steady meals every few hours. I limit my sugar intake to a few cookies or coffee twice per night. Once when I arrive at work and the other when the sun rises. I find the hardest time to stay awake to be at sunrise. I beat the tiredness by being active physically and by saving work tasks to keep my mind active. I have breakfast when I get home and usually fall asleep quickly by reading a book or watching a think less show. I keep my bedroom at a consistent 60degrees and have a loud fan to distract me from noises outside. I do wake up once and its usually a bathroom break and to get a drink but then I go right back to sleep. I like working at night when everyone else is asleep in bed. I feel the energy around me more so and I feel alive. I work four ten-hour shifts and spend the fifth day resting to reset my clock and to wake up early Saturday morning. Mondays I make an effort to rest but its sometimes a hit or miss. I feel more creative at night..but when I finish school it will be wonderful to go back to a normal sleep schedule.
I’m the exact opposite, I thrive on nights. I get 8-10 hours of sleep when I get home at 5 am. Working nights is calm, and quiet. You can truly relax at times, whereas days are hectic and everyone is out at once. If you have no children and a spouse that works similar schedules, nights are built for a few select people that can tolerate it. I was put on a day shift for about a year, and I had anxiety, weight gain and stress. Some people are just built for working at night.
I'm very much hoping to have a similar experience. I'm going full time graveyard shift soon. My current schedule flip flops working 3-11pm and 7am-3pm and I hate it! Cant establish any good routines
I've been working 12-hr shift work for 6 years now and I haven't suffered many negative effects. I try to keep my sleep cycle balanced, where I would sleep a 'normal' cycle on my off days and day shifts while keeping my sleep post night shift at the maximum of 6 hours so that I can sleep at night. While doing shift work, I was able to also attend and achieve my Bachelor's degree, Specialist Diploma and now undertaking my Master's degree, all full-time studies while working shift full-time. However, I do know that it is not good for my health to continue this lifestyle for my entire life.
I been working nights for 7 years as a nurse, I do not recommend it. You have no life at all, it's super hard on your mind and body, family time is out the window. I'll be switching to days next month hopefully.
First day of night shift and it was hell. Soon as I got home I could not sleep even though I was exhausted. I probably slept about 4 hours and now it’s time to go back. I might quit already lol
I am so grateful for this video it has answered a lot of my questions. this will be my 8th year doing shift work and i have been off balance and looking for answers. i have learnt a lot great insight thank you asante sana
As a single 23 year old in school, nights have been great for me. For me it’s about the routine. As long as I stick to my routine that I’ve set for myself, I’m great! When I veer off from that is when I struggle mentally and physically.
@Uri Urofferson because I use to say the same thing what @hannah is saying when I was twenty your not the same the older u get life changes it never stays the same why u care wtf I'm writing about . U ever heard of age and attrition bye 👋🏿 Felicia.
Ex military worked five years of night shifts since leaving and everything you have said I am experiencing now. I need a new job. Just hope I get some luck soon 😲
thank you so much for telling me it would be unethical and cruel to ask me, as a night shift worker, to spend my entire day in darkness and expose myself to light only around the period of my work schedule. I've had increasingly severe difficulties after 11 years of night shift working, and people (who are fortunate to be awake during the days) keep telling me to use black out shades, etc. That would be so depressing to me I'd rather just exit life.
Night shift is fine if your young, you can sleep during the day 6-8hours and feel great during you night shifts, some people just complain to much too lol
My story with nightshifts is horrible. I was an anxious depressed ten before. These shifts done very much damage to me. My mental health is completely done . I have lots of panic attacks, suicidal thoughts and a constant feeling like crap. I’m tired every time, even on my off days. I gained serious weight in more than one year of rotating shifts including the night one. I also develop shift work disorder, cardiovascular disease. My legs and hands are cold like hell every time. I was so depressed and i was eating all the night and drinking everyday. The only thing i wanted to do in the mornings was to get very drunk and to forget about this shitty life. I’m just 19. This makes me more depressed. I need to grow and i have a constant feeling that these shifts won’t let me develop to my full potential. Now i gave up alcohol, fast foods and bad habits. I want to lose weight and gain muscle. The only thing that stops me is the night shifts. I respect you all for working in the nights. It’s such a hard job and i never adapted to it. Sadly, i need to stick more to it because of the lack of jobs in my city. 😔😭 (sorry for my bad english, i’m from Romania)
Been on the night shift for 10 years. You get use to it. The human body can endure and adjust to anything given enough time. So for those of you who say it's to hard or don't do it, you're likely the same time of people who give up on things simply because it isn't easy. My key to life. Nothing in life worth doing is easy. Suck it up butter cup
Maan I am 20 years old and today I started working at night, I have pain in my feet. Working at night is horrible for the mind and body, 4 more days are missing and then I will work on the day.
Ear plugs cannot be underestimated enough. One thing people forget is everything happens during the day. Screaming kids, smoke detectors, your neighbour mowing the lawn. Dead silence is as important as blocking out the light.
Getting off the night shift soon (12pm-8am). I just cant deal with feeling tired all the time, eating comfort food again, i was doing well before but just kinda had a "fuck-it" attitude after starting overnights. I can only sleep like 4-6 hours at a time during the day, the mask on my eyes helped a bit with sleeping longer intervals. I have to break it up into two sleep sessions because i just cant seem to sleep straight through for 7-8 hours. I have started working out a bit because i have developed this weird leg problem, i feel blood circulating through my right leg and feel this weird cramp feeling in my right thigh. I'm only 33 years old time to go back to day shift
I thought I was the only one who had to sleep 2 times because I could never sleep for more than 4 hours. Feels good to understand that others go through the same shit.
You know, I've been working crap hours for years now, on and off graves and days; I've been working only graves for the past 3 years now. I've always been the unhealthy type (eats crappy food, sugar, candy, energy drinks etc etc) but I've never gained weight or anything I've always been like 120lbs.. almost anorexic for my once height and age. Then I started working out in the morning, eating healthy, and being active when I can, I've started to gain muscle over the years and now I'm healthy and built, with that being said.... *Working graves is NOT that bad on your body if you have self control.... BUT it takes a very big toll on your mental and phycological health...* The fact that I am awake when no one else is, I rarely see or talk to people, my "circadian clock" is always messed up and trying to fix my sleep schedule, the sleep deprivation, the moral of the work, etc... This all builds up, and after this long... I'm about done... I miss being awake during the day, spending time with the people I love, being able to actually go and do stuff, I never see my wife, I am never able to spend time with my family, I don't have friends cause no one is awake when I am, I've come accustom to the freaks that come out at night, and most places are closed when I'm awake. I was a HUGE introvert when I started graves, and now I'm trying to better myself and I'm starting to get healthier and I got to say.. Graves suucckk. People under-estimate us and what we have to go through for grave shifts no matter what you occupation is. It takes a special person to be able to do it for a long time and not... take a dirt nap. So I just want to let my fellow night owls out there know that you are kind of the Unnoticed Heroes that keep the nights safe, and functional.
I'm working on year 3 of nights and I will say this much, as far as mood issues I've not had any depression or anxiety. However I will say you do tend to sleep less or you just sleep through the days on your days off due to the nature of the beast, thankfully this is a job I'm working not a career. As for being able to see family and friends I would agree, you see them less my fiance is at work or school during the day so she's up at 0530 I'm home at 0500 and asleep by 0600. All in all I would definitely recommend staying away from nights if it's looking like a long term position.
I'm in my fourth year of doing Nightshift, I'm done with it. it's good in theory, but my quality of life has turned to crap. Suffer from depression and suffer from Insomnia. I've only averaging in 4 hours of sleep MAX with my three little ones running around the house and had some near misses on my way home after a shift. And to clarify the shifts I do, they are an 8 on and 6 off roster at 10 hours per shift. Sounds fantastic in theory but it's compounded on me. I'm 34 and feel like I'm in my late 40's. I wouldn't recommend it for a long-term thing...
I recently graduated from Tech school as an Industrial Maintenance Tech. Unfortunately many jobs make us newbies work the night shift. I really hope I can get at least second shift. I’ve worked night before and I was a total zombie!
Ive been averaging about 4 hours of sleep a night due to doing both night shift work and sometimes daytime work, This has been happening for 3 months at the moment. Whenever I have days off I just want to sleep and nothing else a form of hypersomnia, I have been experiencing enhanced peripheral numbing and burning in hands and feet and forgetfulness and heart palpitations, I am looking forward to changing back to morning, I was healthiest when I did 7am - 3pm shifts.
Lab tech in manufacturing here. It's traditional in manufacturing to follow a 6-6 schedule (6a-6p or 6p-6a) but I recently am working in a lab that does 4-4 on each side, and I think it's much more equitable. The problem with 6-6 is it too heavily favors the day shift workers while giving the night shift the crap end of the deal. 4-4 is advantageous slightly for night shifters because you get out at 4-430am and it is still dark outside. Assuming you've prepped yourself at the least with blackout curtains, these hours allow you to get home, take some time to slow down, then get to bed without seeing sunrise to disrupt your rhythm too much. A 4-4 schedule shifts equally on both day and night shift workers, by telling the 4am clock-in shift that they've got to set their alarms for an ungodly hour, while telling the night shift that they've still got to work overnight but Hey it's still dark when you commute home. Best way to cover two 12 hour shifts I think, and I wish more manufacturing co.s would pick up on that rather than just defaulting to running 6-6 shifts simply because they cant think outside the norm
I think there's some confusion between working night shifts mixed with day shifts and people working only nights. The latter is much more manageable, in my opinion. After a while you live in a different timezone and can't even sleep at night.
I'm an night owl, and my body has completely adjusted to this shit over the last 8 years. In my opinion, the benefits of working overnight shift outweighs the benefits of working day shift. Case in point: 1. The general public make me depressed and anxious. This shift keeps me away from them; for the most part. I've gone back to the day shift, and was begging to go back to the overnight shift due to the huge amount of intolerable people. 2. I can flip-flop my sleep schedule according to what is going on in my life. My partner is completely okay with me working this shift, and supports me in my decision 100%!!! I am a college student and an aspiring Nurse; this shift allows me to pick any time I chose. I also see family more, and get much more sleep than the people that work during the day. I do not have to fight traffic, and can get all of my grocery shopping done right after work; that is the least busy time of the day. 3. I am less stressed out! Nobody bothers me, nobody micromanages me, no office politics, and I'm pretty much my own boss. I'm sure everyone that works during the day has that ONE MANAGER that breaths down your neck. Well, I don't!!! The worst I get is the occasional email saying what I did incorrectly; THAT'S IT. I respond, "Sorry, I'll never do it again," and it's done. How's that for job security? My current job has me sitting on my ass for 3/4 of my shift, and I get amazing pay. Anyway, the list goes on and on. The most important thing I have to say is I'm healthy and happy. Do what works for your lifestyle, and don't let a doctor or someone that has probably never worked this shift say otherwise. Cheers!
Very interesting video. I've worked Shifts most of my working life - my current pattern is absolutely fine, as I work two twelve hour Dayshifts, followed by two twelve hour Nightshifts then I'm off for four days, before doing the whole pattern again. So with it only being two nights of Nightshift I don't really suffer from any of the negative effects that the graveyard shift can bring. If I get a bad sleep between Nightshift 1 and Nightshift 2, its no big deal - as I know that my days off are just round the corner, and that keeps me going. However - in an old job of mine (For a multi-national IT corporation) - it was a different story - I frequently found myself being put in a position where I was expected to work seven, sometimes eight or nine 12hr nightshifts in a row - I would NEVER do that again - it was torture. You were dead on your feet at the end of it. As others have commented on here - the money is great for working these weird hours - but working several busy nightshifts in a row is just not worth it, as your health will absolutely suffer in the end.
Watching this on my night shift ar 2:50am, well looking at the comments rather, seeing all the others out there that can relate, thankfully my job is super chilled for like the first 4 hours of it I'm a shuttle driver who takes people up to the airport so thankfully I dont have to deal with anyone really until like 4am-8am, i can relate to many of you guys as my sleep schedule is trash and I'm already an introvert so working 3rds just makes it even more extra but I'm use to it so it doesn't bother me but I definitely want more sleep that is truly the key, I did notice that benadryl puts me out, I've been out of it for a bit so it looks like I'll be heading to family dollar when I get outta here later.
If U are an introvert , nightshifts are a bliss ! Where / why people struggle with nightshifts is the stretch that social life causes. Not much partying as long as one works nightshifts But to be honest , one has to grow up some day anyways
Been doing 3 days 3 nights 6 off 12 hour shifts since i was 16. Find a way to get back on track as soon as you get off nights and be as social as you can. It will wreck you but you gotta do whatcha gotta do.
I've been on a rotating shift for 8 years at a job that pays well and I think you have to listen to your body as some people can handle it well and others--like me-- simply can't. If I wasn't making an above average wage, I would have moved on after a few months. My only advice is to not do it, but if it's the big bucks, then save as much as you can, build a little nest egg and move on to better hours the second you can.
I been doing night shift for sometime and i tell u is not easy no life just hard on u in every way dont matter how high ur income i just got to do this for 5 more moths and im quitting this shift been at my jod for a few years im off one day and only sleep at night at Thursday i got the whole thing set up blackout curtains sleeping music but i still feel tired weight gain is just not worth it......i deeply appreciate anyone that works nights .......
I've been on Nightshift for almost a year(4 days straight 10 hrs a night) and I have all the negative effects. Depressive episodes for weeks at a time, anxiety, sleep deprivation, my eye sight has suffered (its a computer job), health is decling. I'm currently in school so I can go back to days as it's seriously doing more damage than good.
I do security for night shift. I like it cause I won't have to deal with annoying people during the day and I got used to staying up all night cause of the lock down, I would sleep all day and stay up playing video games. But the difference is that when I'm on duty for my nightshift, I'm on dispatch just watching cameras and making sure no crack head is trying to jump over on private property, since we're in the middle of Downtown. And looking at the cameras for the whole 8hrs shift can get really boring and makes you sleepy. Some people say night shift sucks cause they can't hang out friends or see their significant other. I don't have any friends and I've been single for 5+yrs lol so basically what I do when I get home from work is work out for 3 or 4hrs, sleep, wakeup up, and if i have time, I'll play a little bit of video games then get ready to head to work again. I guess people say "you can handle it cause you're young" that might be true but I've worked with older people who do have friends and in a relationship that work night shifts and still manage to live socially while also getting sleep. Basically my point is, if you're like me who doesn't like to socialize with stupid annoying people, try out night shift, it's not so bad.
I'm 21, I've done night shifts since I was 16 (illegally for 2 years, bad company 😂) 5pm-5am for 5 years. I've just noticed that I'm always pale. I can never get any colour on my face. And Im always eating during my shift. Always hungry. Apart from that, I'm good I think 😂
I have been working night shift for about 8 months. I really enjoy all the peace and quite at work. I work at a hotel so it's pretty chill. It has however made my home life pretty difficult. I have almost no social life. I do try to live the Nirmal hours on my days off cause I have 2 young children. I'm wondering if I should be trying to exercise. I am 5'4" and like 110 pounds. I don't want to lose weight, but I am concerned about how little exercise I get now. Can't be good on the heart 😬 Any suggestions?
Exercise is always good, I'd just play with the kiddos. Rest is often underrated though. It gives your system time to recover, that's why we take it easy when we're sick.
I’m in the same boat, except I have 3 kids, 2 are in school and my youngest is autistic. He’s very demanding. I don’t even know how to balance “me time” with motherhood anymore. It’s harder on the weeknights when I do have work 😩
I think the over night hotel job is a great opportunity to go to school for a better opportunity. If you aren't much if a people person. There are a few things that can make it a great job for some, but for mothers, it's very difficult. I wish u the best of luck
i've been doing nightshifts for the last 6 months, 11 nights per month more or less. It's good to know what I can do to minimize the side effects and I'm even happier to see I am not doing so bad since I love my 3 am 20 min nap :D (don't tell my boss).
I work night shifts. Im happy af, energetic, enthusiastic and I dont feel like Im dying at all. I even post to TH-cam during the day lolol! If you work Graveyards... life is different so how you LIVE has to be different too. Since SLEEP is what youre taking from.. you have to Optimize everything else. Eat right. Exercise. Meditate and Socialize, laugh, etc. If SLEEP is during the day you have to Optimize everything else pretty much. Black Out Curtains, a Sleeping Mask, and covering the skin so the light doesnt hit it. Stretching, deep breathing also.
How can there be scientific evidence supporting the negative effects of night shift work and yet so many people that are not compensated for all the adverse effect it can produce. I literally feel myself wasting away on night shift
I feel I have adjusted to night shift. However, my husband and I do things differently from my coworkers. I keep a "normal" schedule aside from it being at night. By that I mean that I wake up, go to work, come home and eat dinner, have family time and go to bed. My coworkers work and then come home and sleep, get up and eat dinner and have family time. Our bedroom is blacked out for daytime sleeping.
Honestly, at first the night shift seems okay, sure you're tired but you get better pay and don't have to deal with as many or no customers; but after a while it eats at you. You struggle to find time to sleep and do daily household tasks, you become more irritable and difficult to be around and your mental health deteriorates. Don't get me wrong, some people will be great at the night shift but I never realised how much it had an effect on me.
Yeah same for me. I thought night shifts would be good for me because I’m a night owl and hated waking up early in the morning. Plus better pay: But after a few months in, I’ve been more miserable than ever and had developed insomnia for the first time in my life. It’s not for everyone. I also ate well and exercised a lot.
Watching this during my overnight shift lol after working I go to the gym to beat myself up with lol spend time with the fam then go to bed around 1:30-2Pm to 10pm. So far so good
I have worked rotating shift for 30 years now. What sucks is I've started over so many times from closures and layoffs, that there isn't that payoff of increased pay and time off. At 60 I have 2 weeks vacation and no time to bid a better job in the company. I see a big difference in the young guys that work alot of overtime. They get very smart assie as I call it, because they are tired. There's just alot of problems with shift work.
I love night shift! I worked nights for 6 years. We worked pretty much 7 days a week some times we only worked 6. I am currently working days now because I finally have the seniority at my work to bump people. Having 3 kids 5, 4, 1, and its not fun working nights. The stuff I got a way with on midnights is unreal. My supervisor liked me alot so when it was slow he would let me sleep and he would come wake me up if he need me. I work in a steel mill make great money for not having to do much but once you get to days it's a different world. Easy job for the most part.
I tried to work night shift but my body would only allow me to sleep for just 2 to 3 hours during the day. No matter what I did I could not get more than that, so I only lasted two months on night shift. It was awful.
I think this is more related to a genetic fact on who is a night owl and who is not. Back on the stone age, there were guys that had to stay awake in order to take care of others sleeping. For me, I've been a night person all my life, I always get comments on how I . can stay awake during the night and yet go to work the next day with a few hours of sleep. I've always been struggling with anxiety and depression on daily basis, as night shift worker and as day shift as well, but that is something that I believe should not be related to staying awake at night. If by some reason you get anxiety or depression, the best thing to do is to go talk with an specialist and work your problem deeply so you can control your mind on not thinking that much, since overthink is almost 99.9% of the depression or anxiety. I took this night shift job, being my second time working on this schedule, about 5 months ago, and I keep loving it even more. Night is amazing for studying, and doing productive things for your mind. But it is really important to have a good diet, get healthy snacks during the night, do some exercise so your body will actually want to sleep when need to, and make yourself understand that if you do nothing during your night shift more than think about your problems, that is a complete separate thing. Human adapt to all conditions. Cheer up guys, and enjoy the nights watch.
I have worked night shift for 1 year now 11pm to 10am Thursday through Sunday. And let me say it is the worst I am 54 years old have never worked night shift or weekends. And getting home at 11am and back in bed at 1 pm only 2 hours of time to myself Takes the life out of you missing all weekend activities and family functions Watching everyone grow further away and trying to transition back to day time every week it will make for a short life I would never recommend this shift to anyone and leaving my wife home alone is by far the hardest
true had to do shift work when i was young two weeks of nights, three weeks of days .had depression anxiety panic attacks never had any issues before shift work did real damage ! to this's day 40 years later i still have sleep problems bouts of depression, seemed to trigger it ,,, if i had only know that then may have stopped years of suffering
I had bad symptoms at first, but for some reason I feel better working nights now 🤷 maybe everyone is different? I love being alone now, no bs to put up with =less stress.
Quite relief
Thank you pinky I am starting my night duty today 13/02/2022
@@JTCLAN1 Same here... Have you found any trick and tips to overcome this?
How do you manage your day? Is it possible for you to share your routine?
Okay! I'm not the only one! There are so many benefits to the night owl lifestyle!
Joke's on you, I was already depressed, anxious, overweight and sleep deprived before ever starting night shifts.
Lmao 😂 Okay, me.
Same
Lol
Me too
😂😂😂🍻
I'm 32 and have done night shift for 4 years total and the sat 15 months. I'm down with it, I'm getting on days in the next month. It's not worth any money. For those who are just considering it, don't do it. Irritation, exhaustion, depression, anxiety, bad diet, and more. U feel like absolute crap 24/7. I will never do night shift again in my life. It is brutal to your body and mind.
*done
i understand how you feel, i find myself falling asleep later and later after work. i get out of work ag 6 in the morning and sometimes i dont fall asleep until 1 or 2 in the afternoon. ive been doing this shift for 6 months now and its been the worst 6 months of my life, i rarely clean anymore, i dont see my family or friends anymore, and i eat like crap and drink a lot more alcohol. i would never recommend midnights to anyone
i've been in night shift since 2012 :/ from 9pm to 5-6 am 5 days a week...in summer its 6 days a week...it feels like somebody is sucking life out me through a straw...if you can avoid night shift work avoid it at all costs
I have noticed that my memory, problem solving, attitude management and even consideration for others all be compromised as a result of working night shift. Fair play lasting 15 years, I've only been at it 15 months haha
Thanks brother
i have worked night shift for 3 years now, but i adapted easily because i have been nocturnal my entire life, the thing you gotta know about night shift is that you absoultley have to be someone that can sleep comfortably during the day, if you cant do this because you have too many pets, or too many kids that depend on you, or people that constantly wake you up to ask you favors and errands, with their horrible music and power tool noise, then you cant work night shift, simple as that.
lmaooooo so funny but true
Watching this during my night shift lol
Same lol
😂
Same
Same.
i sleep on my night shift
I’m depressed & anxious regardless so I choose night shift because it’s less people to deal with and less things going on that will potentially ruin my mood
thats true...and when you go out for a smoke and just watch the stars in peace and quiet uhhh nothing beats it :)
Im exactly the same.
Same
Plus it pays more
This is exactly why i applied for night shifts!
I’ve done shifts (including nights) for almost 18 years. I’ve been ruined by it. My dad was exactly the same and was like a bear with a sore head for the entire time. He switched over to days and was a brand new person, a really lovely guy.
hmmm, in which way different?
Anyone else get better overall working night shift? Once I started working night shift I got healthier and my mood got better. I started working out and eating healthy and started reading again, the stores are always empty in the mornings, so it's nice. I have time for doctor appointments and things like that. I think if you are an introverted person, night shift might be for you. I noticed that I was depressed and very unhealthy working day shifts, so I think for some people they can adjust or it's just better for them to work night shift.
@Marko 11:30 pm to 8:00 am
If you have experienced mobbing in the workplace and a toxic dynamic with colleagues, you are more than happy working night shifts
Any tips pls.like what time do you go to sleep and what time do you wake up?
@@d.e.p.5624 I am shifting from a day Job to night job just because of the better work culture and nice people and off course higher pay
Take note!
We’re I’m at we get no differential pay. Same pay as day Or nights
Exactly. It's so sad 😭
Been on night shift for 7yrs and I live alone.
What I've done to combat it.
- I stopped smoking weed.
- I stopped drinking
- I make sure I workout, run,run stairs,skip, lift, jog.
-Mood swings (Yes not fun)
- irritability: Try to be patient with people and inform your friends and family you are working nights so they are aware you might be in a mood to RIP someone's face off... but try to be patient.
Good luck to everyone.
thanks for the tips
Amazing comment!! Thank you so much.
Maybe you can do great working nights 10, 20 or 30 years, who knows but nights are for sleep and your body knows it 🤷♂️
Yeah been doing night shifts 17 years...I am 47 and I completely agree with the exercising and eating well....agree with you 100%
Great comment man. I'm interested on why you stopped smoking weed particularly in relation to night shift?.. if you could dwelve deeper. Thanks
You and I should compare notes sometime.
yes regularity is key.
but sleep aids... not good, because it does not procure natural sleep
@@burlapvest7521 i just smoke a joint when i can't sleep :D seems to work just fine

So how have you been with your new job now pal?
Been working night shift for 3yrs. I did 10pm-6am, and right now I’m working 5pm-5:30am. It’s finally gotten to the point where I am constantly tired almost no matter how much sleep I get. Balancing school during the afternoon is getting harder and harder. After this video I might switch to days I have an offer I might actually do it. Thank you sir!
bro, if you work and do school during the day, youll be tired too.

Heeey, buddy I also work at the hotel and I work night shifts. I would like to get this totally balanced schedule.
Dude, the fact that your not getting any more than minimum wage is illegal. Get out of that place now, so much more to do in life
Please respect yourself more by leaving !!! It’s not worth your health I promise you. Find a normal day working job or don’t work at all. Your health always comes first
Same thing happening with me i feel low all day and my brain gets so warm when the shift ends in the morning i feel like i won't be alive😭
I just tell my family to fuck off they should know what my job entails
They don’t sound very respectful towards you :(
I've been 8 years on a second shift position, and enjoy!
20 percent?! Holy shit. I just get an extra $1.20/hr lol
YOU MA'AM ARE THE SHIT💩
why are you retiring at 75....you probably do absolutely nothing on your job but make sure your patents are sleep.

Really.
I start night shifts tonight and this video is depressing 🤣
That's great! It's the ideal time to work if you study for sure!

😂😂😂😂😂
Last night of nightshift after 3 years tonight, I'm so stoked. Tried everything to make it work including, exercise, eating healthy, blackout curtains, white noise, dropped caffeine, same schedule on days off, expensive bed, still nothing really works. I have about 3 years of sleep debt. Was lucky if I got 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep.
I've worked third much of my life, and it has very much affected my health. I can't wait to be done!
You're gorgeous....had to be said
@@admiralbinky1309 lol!! Simp it had to be said.
Yep life is easier when you stop trying to be like everyone else and their version of a 'normal' day.
I’ve been on nights for two years and I am constantly trying hold it together. Regular panic attacks, mood swings, and depression. I hate it, but I feel trapped by my job
I do it for 5 years, and I am still struggling even after all these years, now I am burnout
i've worked permanent night shift for 7 years. it's exhausting and depressing. i'm trying to transfer to days asap
Leo I’m in agreement with you
Same here for over a decade- it really screws up your perception, cognition and your well-being.
You are being smart! I recently worked a job that would end around 10 pm. Still too late for me!
I actually get more sleep before a night shift than i would before a day shift 🤷♂️
I did full time nights for 12 years..still do them occasionally..they slowly kill you
Never felt something so real
Just like days 😀
How r u doing now?
I am so grateful for this video it has answered a lot of my questions. this will be my 8th year doing shift work and i have been off balance and looking for answers. i have learnt a lot great insight thank you asante sana
As a single 23 year old in school, nights have been great for me. For me it’s about the routine. As long as I stick to my routine that I’ve set for myself, I’m great! When I veer off from that is when I struggle mentally and physically.
Say that 20 years from now when you're 43 I said the same thing in my twenties find yourself a day job asap
Best decision I made. M calm and have so much more energy
thank you so much for telling me it would be unethical and cruel to ask me, as a night shift worker, to spend my entire day in darkness and expose myself to light only around the period of my work schedule. I've had increasingly severe difficulties after 11 years of night shift working, and people (who are fortunate to be awake during the days) keep telling me to use black out shades, etc. That would be so depressing to me I'd rather just exit life.
I have to add, I am 56 years old, and it has been exponentially harder on me the older I get....
Maybe after 11 years it's time for a change?
@@tracyobrien2816 a change is good don't die wondering
I feel you man. Being 18 and having few months in stocking to night shifts, it’s been utter hell for me.
Type of people* not time.
6pm to 5 am
i worked nights for 25 years no problem , we've got the same name must be something to do with that LOL
john smith lmao
I've been working night shift for 2 years and i can't even sleep right on my days off
it is true that i have less social life. I have resigned from my job i've been night shift for 2 and half years. I suffer sleep deprivation.
Been an emergency shift worker for 28 years. Hopefully my body won't go into shock getting regular sleep after so long.
But what if your not sleep deprived?
I recently graduated from Tech school as an Industrial Maintenance Tech. Unfortunately many jobs make us newbies work the night shift. I really hope I can get at least second shift. I’ve worked night before and I was a total zombie!
Watching this on my night shift 🙃I’ve been on night shift for the past two years and I’m starting to hate my life.
Great. Now I know more about scheduling and thus I can work more efficiently, effectively, and maximize my income.
With all this info on health effects why are'nt shift workers given earlier retirement and also sleeping time at work ?
Watching THIS DURING my night shift ...
Been working nights for like 7 years. I’m at my breaking point
I do rotating shift work in a factory including a nightshift for 4 years and it’s brutal. Put on over 4 stone and quality of life has been reduced
Agreed
Not true
Cheers!
i worked 12 hour nights for 25 years i've retired now and i really miss it
@@johnsmith-bx4rn I plan on staying in the graveyard once I become an RN. Sorry you miss it.
💯 Love This :)
Not much partying as long as one works nightshifts
But to be honest , one has to grow up some day anyways
Thanks todd
1. Not planning on getting a family.
2. Already anxious and depressed, I can take more.
3. Not social, I hate people (no offense).
Sign me up, Scotty.
I have always strongly disliked being around people so you are not alone.
Please use periods for goodness sake

Try inner engineering from Isha yoga
I am doing rotational night shift for 3 years. But there is no health issues
Wow, probably half of my adult work life has been working nights, maybe 15 yrs. This all makes sense to so much to my own experience
i've been doing nightshifts for the last 6 months, 11 nights per month more or less.
I wouldn’t trade mids for nothing, I’m happy, healthy, 30, flirty, and thriving!
Well sounds like you had a bad supervisor that favourited certain employees and one happened to be you. Plain wrong!
I tried to work night shift but my body would only allow me to sleep for just 2 to 3 hours during the day. No matter what I did I could not get more than that, so I only lasted two months on night shift. It was awful.
Night shift almost killed me
I think this is more related to a genetic fact on who is a night owl and who is not.
Watching this while trying to sleep after working my nursing 7pm-7am shift in the ER🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
thanks man, it is very useful
Ok watching this to find solution of my sleep problems after my night shift
I have worked night shift for 1 year now 11pm to 10am
Thursday through Sunday. And let me say it is the worst I am 54 years old have
never worked night shift or weekends. And getting home at 11am and back in bed
at 1 pm only 2 hours of time to myself Takes the life out of you missing
all weekend activities and family functions
Watching everyone grow further away and trying to transition
back to day time every week it will make for a short life I would never
recommend this shift to anyone and leaving my wife home alone is by far the
hardest
I'm watching this during my off "night"
Best tips i see before
true had to do shift work when i was young two weeks of nights, three weeks of days .had depression anxiety panic attacks never had any issues before shift work did real damage ! to this's day 40 years later i still have sleep problems bouts of depression, seemed to trigger it ,,, if i had only know that then may have stopped years of suffering
I need to do late nights for three months - a bar in which we don’t get out until 4am. After three months, I’m qualified to work in the mornings.
I had bad symptoms at first, but for some reason I feel better working nights now 🤷 maybe everyone is different? I love being alone now, no bs to put up with =less stress.
