That title gave me a heart attack, I was like "there's no way you disliked these episodes." Don't worry 99% of the blind jokes are told by Toph herself, and from what I've heard, it's extremely refreshing for actual blind (or similarly impaired) people, compared to how most shows treat disability, where it's always treated like the end of the world, despite it being their everyday life, that they've learned to live with, and in Toph's case actively laugh about.
I also think Katara blind joke and other jokes of that sort come from the fact that the people in the show often forget that she is blind, because she is so capable, so when Katara said 12:45 she probably thought about the fact that Toph guarded herself off with the tent she build.
just wanted to point out that it’s implied that zhao is the one who burned the fire nation section of wan shi tong’s library. he mentioned at the end of season one, that he’d discovered a great library years before and that that was where he learned of the mortal forms of the ocean and moon spirits. i can only imagine how benevolent wan shi tong once was because if i were him, the burnings definitely would’ve been my final straw smh
Ugh, Zhao is the worst. I feel bad saying that’s a “cool” bit of lore, but I think it’s awesome how the writers sneak things like that in. Thanks for mentioning it! 😄
Ok, so for the longest time, I always thought the "too bad you cant see them Toph" as Katara saying she cant see them cause Toph is over there alone in her rock tent, not cause she's blind. Cause you know how they always forgets Toph is blind. lol Edit: Ah I see this is addressed in then next vid😅
Toph is such a great foil for Katara. They're polar opposites and I'm confident that under any other circumstance they wouldn't be friends. But their loyalty to Aang and the bigger picture forces them to work together. That comment that Katara makes is totally something an older sister would make when the younger one is pissing her off- siblings go right for the jugular when they're fighting 🤣
That moment when Katara made that mean blind joke towards Toph was brought up in a TH-cam essay about the importance of flaws in a character. And I love that about Katara - how flawed she is and, in this case, how b***y she can be 😂 it makes her more relatable- no one is perfect, and I know Katara tries to be perfect so when she’s like this it just makes her more realistic
Oh, it’s interesting you say that-another comment was saying that she is referencing the fact that they’re sleeping outside and Toph isn’t. I’m glad I’m not the only one who interpreted it as you mentioned! 😅
@@Awesomesauce1_8_6_4 I think, while youre obviously correct that most people have interpreted that scene as a blind joke, the INTENDED interpretation was simply that toph couldnt see the sky inside her tent (Katara forgetting, temporarily, that shes blind, as Aang and Sokka do later). The way the scene is framed, Katara says the line about not being able to see the stars *right after* Toph pulls up her tent and slams the "door" in Katara's face, so shes essentially pointing out that *because* she's shut herself in and slammed the door, she can't see the stars. Idk, that's just my opinion but it's how ive always interpreted the scene and i think it generally makes more sense
If you hadn't noticed already/someone hasn't told you- BUT they got a huge upgrade with their animation team for season two and three. You can tell when paying attention, but the artists also had a lot of liberty to just keep scenes moving. When Toph and Katara are standing there arguing, Katara is shaking from anger and still moving while Toph talks back at her. It can be noticed in other scenes too throughout the season, where they had the liberty to be silly with their movements and facial expressions making it a lot more visually stimulating.
19:00 he threw a bucket of water at a guard. Actually he never used bending while being blue spirit at all. To cover his identity, and perhaps the other reason being his feeling of shame as a disgraced prince, so he puts on a mask and desires to be someone else.
Finally, Toph is here! I love her character so much (my third favorite character of the show), she is sassy/bratty and funny but also very powerful (strong female character done right! imo) and might be the best blind character ever. I hope you will love the rest of the season since some of the last 10 episodes of this season has some of the most impactful moment /scenes of the show.
I always interpreted that Katara forgot Toph is blind and her comment to Toph is because Toph is sleeping in her personal tent while everyone else is sleeping outside. Some support for this is that you'll find that as the show goes on, the gang frequently forgets that Toph is blind ("there it is!" in "the Library" is an example). Either way, it is meant to be passive-aggressive.
It’s honestly so fun hearing your thoughts on this show! It is the first show I ever “binged” back when Netflix first started online streaming. I watched the first season over a few weeks, season 2 in a week, and season 3 in two days. It is SO good. Side note: the comics that follow the series are good, but “The Search” is essential. Can’t say why because spoilers, but it is excellent.
Ohh, I’ll keep that in mind about the comics! Thanks for the info 😄 Not immediately watching the whole series is eating me inside a little, so I’m jealous of your watching experience 😂 I can’t wait to see how everything turns out!
The guy who voiced The Boulder is WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley aka Mankind, aka Cactus Jack, aka Dude Love. Initially they wanted to get Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson but he was working on another project. He was basically doing the voice as a take on The Rock’s promo style with multiple third person references.
With as much as you talked about how much you loved Appa, I was WAITING for this episode. I knew you were going to be so worried. Also, I love hearing your thoughts on these episodes and the dynamics they bring our characters. One thing I do like about The Chase specifically is that it really explores our main group and their interactions with one another. Toph and Katara beefing with one another makes a lot of sense and I love to see how they try to come to terms with one another. Zuko Alone and Bitter Work are some of my favorite episodes from Season 2. It adds so much to Zuko's character and just breaks my heart every time I watch them.
Haha, you all KNEW the pain I’d feel at the Appa moment 😅😂😭 To your last point: I can’t wait to someday rewatch this show after watching through all of it. It seems like there’s so much to appreciate after seeing how everything comes together :)
In hindsight, Zuko taking "never forget who you are" as being proud of his status as the prince of the Fire Nation was probably a misinterpretation. His mother wanted him to remember his kindness in the face of the world pushing him to be otherwise.
Katara's comment about Toph not seeing the stars was directly the ONLY time the blind jokes are offensive and purposely done to show her being over the top due to their situation. Any other blind joke they have it's clever and well done typically the Gaang forgetting she's blind
Lu Ten, Iroh's son died. Ozai wanted to be next in line because of that but was denied being told to kill Zuko so he can feel Iron's pain. Ursa (their mother) obviously didn't want her sweet son killed because her nasty husband is power hungry. SO she made a deal with Ozai. She kills Azulon (the grandfather) overnight and they claim his dying words were to elect Ozai as the next firelord. Zuko get's to live and Ursa is banished from the fire nation for killing him. She is not dead.
12:45 Nooo, Katara said that bc Toph made herself the shelter (selfishly) while they sleep out in the open (if I remember correctly). But I have to say there are a few great blind jokes in the series (usually coming from Toph)
@@fullmetaanalysis you said we do not know if he has gone there, but it was said that he has. Also we knew somethings before that because he saw the dragon that Aang was travelling on in episode 7.

4:20 that character "The Boulder" besides being a parody of The Rock is actually voiced by a pro-wrestler Mick Foley.
