I love that in the end, instead of choosing violence like always, she just let them be, saying that they are too foolish for her leadership anyways, and goes on to continue her own path. The old Azula would not have hesitated to punish those who went against her orders. So in a way, she did develop, even if it's just a little bit.
Even though she hasn't accepted the truth about herself and figure out what she wants for herself just yet, she still continues to walk her own path, and that's what I like about her.

To those who wanted her to be redeemed in this comic, did you really expect someone like her to be redeemed like that in just one comic, Zuko went through a whole 3 seasons of character growth, since Azula is more messed up it'll would take her much longer to get better mentally

It's refreshing to actually see a villain reject a "supernaturally given" redemption for once. If Azula ever gets redeemed then I would want it to be on her own terms and without any spirit fuckery. She needs to come to the conclusion of what she wants to do with her life on her own. Others may influence her in that journey and give her some pointers but I absolutely didn't want to see her get turned by some random spirit she just happens to stumble over once.

    • @LivInSpace5162
      @LivInSpace5162 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +126

Exactly! and she's more mentally messed up so realistically if she were to get redeemed it'd take her much longer than Zuko to get there.
You can't redeem someone like Azula in one comic so I'm glad she rejected redemption too

    • @Cloofinder
      @Cloofinder 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

Darth Vader went thru similar supernatural redemption arcs and rejected it but did show signs the light in him was still there before in comics (canon and noncanon). So this is no different, tbh this wasn't really well written. It just feels pointless. It's just Azula being Azula and no sign of character development. The spirit is still alive, and the only "change" is Azula looking for more canon fodder.

It depends on how it's written. Spiritual awakenings can be very overwhelming for most people, even for the worse of the worst. Though they have to be in a particular state of mind where one is willing to except it. For example, when your entire world has crumbled around you & you feel unbelievable dispare & anguish, you just want all the pain you're feeling to end. A perfect example of this is in Avatar is when Azula had her mental breakdown & all of her emotions were at their highest after losing to Zuko & Katara. In the bible, Psalms 18:18 states, "When I was at my weakest, my enemies attacked- but the Lord held on to me." This verse means the when we're at our lowest and weakest point, that's when we're able to truly experience the perfection that is His grace; that's when we're able too see the strength and glory of Christ come to fruition in it's greatest form within our lives. In Azula's case, she has to be at her lowest point & be self aware enough to be willing to except any real positive change.

She said it herself. It came out of her mouth: "You weren't there to protect me from dad." She knows her father is trash she just refuses to accept it because of the Ozai brainwash academy she went through.
Interesting that her ideal idea of Zuko is the boy that was never got harmed before he got banished, before the family was separated.

through pure talent alone, Azula outshined her older brother and shared their father's ambition to take charge
Azula was some what responsible for the exile of her mother and the rise of her father to the Fire Lord position
after her brother got banished, she presumably became next in line for the throne
however, by the time of her coronation, Azula had suffered extreme mental breakdown, she became paranoid and fired all of her followers, she also started to hallucinate about her mom

I thought this was the perfect beginning to at least some form of redemption for Azula.
Some people may say nothing happened, but she clearly changed, otherwise she would just have attacked the Fire Warriors at the end, showing she's capable of letting things go.
And some people may say Azula doesn't want or need redemption, but in the end, her behaviour is damaging to herself and the people around her, she can't stay as this "perfect villain" without eventually becoming an unstable, mentally broken wreck.

    • @angelocoll7802
      @angelocoll7802 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      You're right.
All the people wanted and Azula villain Forever don't understand this Little detail: the reasons that making her a villain are the same reasons that making her crazy. If She remain the eternal villain, She Will remain with mental troubles, and this is a problem for her powers and abilities, and we see that. A Crazy teenager is not a real problem, she's unbelievable as a villain now, not with her stops to her full power.
Anyway, a lot of people have a misconception with the word "redemption", because in its ancient origin, the latin verb "redigere" had a different meaning, and It was "to ransom". So, an Azula's redemption will never be the "becoming a good guy", but the more simple "understand why she's in her condition and stop with this". She would become a grey character with a personal and a confused morality indeed the famous stereotype without morality. Because these are her two only possibilities as a character: or she will change or she will die/return crazy. There aren't other possibilities: the other like that One in Smoke and Shadow, that a lot of fans appreciate, are parodies like Space Balls, good for comedy only.

I love how Azula's story explores a form of redemption, but not the kind that suits her simply because she's too spiritually-troubled.
The spirit built her visions on lies and ignorance, which is the way Ozai raised her childhood. Even though it doesn't seem like it, Azula truly despises the way Ozai treated her. She recognizes that the spirit is treating her the exact same way, but with different intentions. Seeing Azula's visions getting twisted is a great way to depict how her current idea of redemption isn't possible. The people in her past wont just turn around and magically praise her. She has to work towards praise and respect and the ending shows that by showing her demeanor softening a little bit. This doesn't mean that she'll fully become a good person, but it shows she's acknowledging her past and taking steps to understand it.

I'm not sure if she'll get a redemption arc, but for that to happen, she'll need to learn to respect her comrades' wishes, so she doesn't constantly think that they(and others) are betraying her. Considering she sees herself as the rightful heir to the throne, that's going to take a long time, if it's going to happen at all.

Azula spent her whole life being controlled or told what to do, and her father expected her to be his fire bending weapon, and she never really decides anything for herself. That's why she struggles on Ember Island because for the first time she has nobody telling her what to do, and she is unable to interact with people her age besides the people assigned to her (Zuko, Mai, and Ty Lee are all Fire Nation royalty or nobles so they aren't really her friends or family, just people on her same level), and inevitably destroys her relationships with all of them, and she is beginning to exercise her free will, and that's why at the end she kicks out everyone from the palace and fights Zuko and loses, and in the end her punishment was being locked up, but it was just a continuation of what she already experienced.
She's not a hero or a very good person, but I feel like her finally being free and having NO expectations or roles for her and just roaming the world with a group she identifies and relates with would be a good way to redeem her and give her a ending; not necessarily a happy or tragic ending, but just peace because she is finally free and is no longer Princess Azula, but just Azula.

In the end she dropped the letter where her mom wrote that Zuko isn't Ozai's real son to discredit him as the heir to the fire nation on purpose. Zuko even noted that it's uncharacteristic of Azula to drop it.

I accept this, clearly, she didn't become better under a night. She did kind of started to notice some patterns, even if they trouble her and they still do trigger her. Maybe we will see her becoming better but that need's to be a hell long road to walk, and i'm happy that spirit didn't magically gave her redemption or she suddenly went like "oh, so am i the one with the issue". No, it showed her the truth, it called her out on her lies and at very least, it showed her that that there is a way to live with out taking anger on anything, like she at the end decide to leave those people alone. Will she become better?, that is unknown. If it is a yes, then it will need's to a road for all of us to follow just like Zuko's, if no they well yeah

Azula constantly reminds me of Zira the lioness from The Lion King 2.
Like Azula, Zira is known for her cruelty and deceit. She is also unwilling to let go of, and accept, the past. Something that proved to be their undoing.
The way Azula refused to rescue Chiyou can be compared to Zira threatening Vitani's life during TLK2's climax. That was what led to their followers deserting them.

This comic was great! Loved it! Folks expecting her to automatically redeem herself after just one experience. Redemption is a long hard road, and it's going to be a long road for Azula. Zukos redemption took three long, hard seasons. Bad choices, and mistakes will be made, but I think she will eventually get there. Despite her dark, nonchalant facade, she's sad and hurting. One thing is clear, she loves her mom, and cares very much about her friends and family. Folks forget, she's still just a child, and will be unlearning a lot of bad things for some time.

This comic kind of makes me sad. Does Azula really want Zuko to have died as children? I don't know, as headcanon, I was convinced she still loves him in some way, that she always did. I mean, why did she want to bring him back home at the end of book 2? I always thought she missed him, but maybe I'm too naive. And she did warn him to be more careful in book 3, so I don't know. Also a bit disappointed that there wasn't more Zuko in this comic. I always felt like he would be such an important person to Azula's redemption, or at least more important than Mai and Ty Lee. It's great to have these femals characters and their friendship shown, but Zuko is her brother, and they went through kinda the same shit as kids. I feel like he would be the only person who could somehow understand her. But what really bugs me is that she seemed so nonchalant in the end. She didn't even think about everything that she'd just witnessed, she didn't get rattled or question her desires. The only thing she did was let her followers live and be happy together. She doesn't know how to be part of this group, and she doesn't know that she showed mercy. She disguises it as being appalled by their weakness. Until she finalls understands her actual feelings and doesn't mold herself into a monster anymore, until she gets up the courage to face her mistakes... With Azula, it's not baby steps. It's microscopic steps. But I'm still happy that there are steps😊 Also, this video was amazing! Thanks so much for sharing the comic, I guess there was a lot of effort that went into the editing🥰

She is trying to pin the blame on someone for making her life suck. I don’t think she wanted zuko to die truly as kids, but her mind was warped to believe him inferior even then. Instead of blaming her father and grandfather for forcing that situation she is blaming zuko because it is easier than understanding that the person you hero worshiped wasn’t worth it. Zuko was the black sheep so of course it was him and her mother that ruined her life, not ozai, azulon, and her own actions

And in EVERY COMIC that shows or mentions her relationship with Zuko, she wishes he was dead. She even celebrated when he got his scar AND tried to murder him MULTIPLE times, both in the animated series and in the comics. She's NOT a good sister nor a good person. She has LAYERS and a STORY that make her an interesting villain.

I just felt bad for Azula in this. Personally, I feel like she was done dirty in the previous comics. She really got discarded and abandoned here. She has nothing but her name at this point, that's why she keeps clinging to the idea of her being Fire Lord. It's the only thing she has in this world. Zuko threw her into the loony bin that treated her like an animal and did not help her mental state. He released her out a year later just so he could exploit her to find their missing mother. Zuko does nothing but treat her horribly throughout the Search comics.
Even in the Smoke comic, Zuko still sees her as an irredeemable person, which is just sad to see. Azula is just as much as a victim as Zuko. Even worse, I would argue. Because she was the golden child. She had no Iroh or Ursa to guide her with good morals, just Ozai. She was raised and indoctrinated to be the perfect manipulative and cruel weapon and was basically neglected by Ursa. (Yes, I know that Ursa's situation was complicated, but I feel like if Ursa and maybe even Iroh tried a bit harder and tried to sway her from Ozai's influence, Azula would be different.) She snapped because of all of the pressure and stresses placed on her at such a young age.

This kinda shows that the one thing that brought her to this mental state in the first place is... She yearned for love and affection, never treated any. So she pushed everyone instead of pulling them closer. All what happened to her is entirely her fault. Yet i kinda feel bad for her.
Before the favouritism and Ozai's Parenthood got to her. She was happy, friendly, loved everyone around her. Envy and hatred eventually pushed her away to steps cant be unchanged. I remember my father's quote back to me, "No one was born evil, there's good in all of us, trapped in a small gate waiting to be opened, the key is love. Without it, the gate grows larger and harder to unlock, until its buried deep, no longer seen."

The spirit was right, she refuses to accept that she is the villain of the story. I'm very interested in knowing how her story will end, if she will redeem herself or if she will die a villain, like Ozai, Azulon and Sozin. Of all of them the one who was most successful was Sozin, he died of old age as the fire lord, but even so his plan failed in the end, the fire nation did not dominate the world.

But when Zuko tells her that despite everything she is still his sister, she abandons that mission for good. Now, the problem is that even though she very clearly did abandon her mission, she holds this belief that only the weak repent. To her, being weak is the absolute worst thing she can be. And so she comes up with convoluted, downright illogical ways to compensate. She went from wanting to be fire lord herself to wanting to force Zuko to be a cruel fire lord. That to me is one of the weakest goals I've ever heard of. I really think that she just needs a justification to be problematic because not doing anything would make her weak.

@@JamaicaZ160R1793010A For Zuko's redemption, he had to first get the thing he thought he wanted: Being accepted by Ozai. Only after he realized how empty that was did he truly start believing in the things Iroh tried to teach him.
Azula on the other hand contrasts Zuko in a really significant manner. Her biggest desire, as revealed in this comic, is to have people admit that they hurt her and apologize for it. Unlike Zuko, this desire is not reachable unless she turns over a new leaf first. Zuko and Iroh and especially Ursa absolutely would acknowledge that they hurt her if she actually swallowed her pride enough to bring it up in a non aggressive way and if she did so without ignoring her own faults, I have little doubt she would get that apology she wants.
So Zuko's path is: I want the wrong thing->I obtain the wrong thing->I feel how pointless and wrong the wrong thing is->I change.
Azula's is: I want the right thing for the wrong reasons->I have to change to get the right thing->But if I change then I won't get the wrong reasons->I won't change->I keep feeling the consequences of my refusal to change.
It's much harder to get an arrow that leads to the "I change" portion. First she has to let go of the wrong reason for wanting the right thing. The wrong reason is the fact that she wants people to apologize to her but has no intention of acknowledging her own faults

Azula doesn't show mercy for Zuko at any moment. Quiet the opposite, in diferent comics (including this one) she blames him for her problems and points out his death as the solution to them. Whatever it takes and however long for Azula to redeem herself, I just hope she doesn't die for it, unlike many other characters whom have 'sacrificed' themselves to conclude their stories. I would love to see for once if a villain lived to tell about it.

well... we have no idea yet as to what happened to her during the years between Avatar Aang and Avatar Korra
we know that she was sent to a psychiatric facility following her failure to be crowned the Fire Lord and losing the throne to Zuko, she was later let out to help search for their mother, but she escaped during the middle of the search and is kind of a fugitive now
she tried to stage a coup and undermine Zuko's reign as Fire Lord multiple times, but she obviously didn't succeed, since Zuko remained Fire Lord till he abdicated in favor of passing the throne to his daughter
Azula's fate by the time of Avatar Korra is left unknown, it is unlikely she died, so maybe she got re-imprisoned

The story needs continuation. Not sure if many know but this, but this is her last appearance in canon. In Korras time what ultimately happens with Azula is never addressed. And Azula is still young in a comic. Hopefully her story continues in avatar studios in some form.

I know two fanfictions that showed a believable redemption arc for her.
In one, she lost her mind during season 2, was saved by Team Avatar, and found a new purpose in life, and in the other, she learned of a greater threat to the world that could destroy them all if she won't help uniting everyone and makes her decision when Zuko saves her from a stray attack from that threat during Sozin's Comet.

Links to FanFiction don't work in TH-cam comments, but I can say their names.
The one in which Azula becomes good at the end of season 2 is called Absolute Trust while the one in which she becomes an ally is a crossover with DBZ, but I don't remember its name at the moment. I know it has the word Saiyan in it.

The thing about Azula is, yes she secretly does have a hunger for other people's love, but she's embarrassed by that desire for love so she fixates on power and domination and delusions of righteousness to try to burn that desire out of her.
This comic was more or less, "Azula in Wonderland." Yes the "spirit" was lying, yes it was a monster, but most of all: it was just Azula's mind playing tricks on her, the insect thing was just what it manifested into, it wasn't spirit trickery, it was all just a dream which exposed the parts of herself and the world around her she was most genuinely frightened of.

I think this comic sets her up to eventually come down the path of anti-hero. I don't think she'll ever be fully good/redeemed, but at least she might become someone who uses her darker inclinations for at least some good reasons even if her tactics/mindset still makes her ultimately antagonistic towards the ATLA protaginists.

I think she'll keep struggling with wanting a normal, happy life on the one hand and on the other wanting power, control and war... In the end she will ask Aang to remove her bending so she can be a normal person not obssessed with power.

I wouldn't mind her being guven a redemption arc, not at all. But what lot of writer's tend to do is that they think that a redemption can last "few epizodes, 30 comic pages or such". Depending of the characther's crimes, it can take less but time does matter, what i really want to see is Azula working out to be a better person, just as Zuko did. It would take her a lot, not just few comic pages and i'm super fucking glad that they didn't give her redemption easy as a pie. We can kinda see that even if she seem's unfazed by the spirit world, it did struck her. We basically seen that in the end, she does see herself as a monster, she does want her brother, her friends to be part of her life and she wants to be praised and loved by her mother too. Her actually stopping herself from taking revenge on those girl's is also a huge step foward, i honestly would love to see her journey. Perhaps, a book which could cover her journey. What also struck me is her need to be around people, or group of people. She really can't handle being alone, she wants to be part of something too.
