    I've always loved old Seagull Outboards -- I've never seen on that started and ran as well as yours.

    I've been Seagulling since 1978, got 4 of them, lovely motors, never let me down once. There is a way to deliver that blow to the nut on your own, when you're a Billy No Mates you have to find ways!

    I used to live in Fowey in Cornwall, especially every year during the regatta theres a seagull race down the river, no-one takes it seriously as it's just a bit of fun, highly entertaining with many larger boats totally underpowered full of drunken sailors,
    Great fun 😁

    Wish I had seen this video 10-15yrs ago before I sent my Silver Century to a repair depot for Winter service and they ruined it!

    I have a light weight engine it was left to me by my Grandfather and was used on his hearing boat as a back up engine. We do have another me and my brother. The light weight one runs but has not run in about 20 year's I had it running In 1999. I will do video of it at some point. After I give her a service thanks for sharing this video mate.

    I had an old Sears motor about 20 years ago that was kind of like that. They are great on square stern canoes. They may be a bit crude but there was a reason for that. They could survive abuse. Like the AK 47, you can drag them through the mud and they continue to work. That motor could be dropped in a river, pulled out and start up after changing the fuel and drying the spark plug. Try that with modern electronics.

    Nice little engines!
    The clutch on the Century is dandy, but more difficult.

    My addition to Seagull motors now totals 32 motors. 17 are runners, and the rest in varying degrees of completeness.

    That was a “totally, totally”, good video. The 102 had a clutch too. My ‘Flock’ is now seven strong. 👍🏻

    I had a 40-plus? from 1973 to 1990. I used it on Puget Sound, salt water, near Seattle Washington, and on the Columbia River, fresh water. Noisy, smoky, dripped oil/gas. Unfailingly reliable. Boat sank one time, in salt water, drained the Seagull and it started first pull.

    Interesting and informative, perhaps crucially so regarding future purchase in my dreams of recapturing lost youth! As an 11 yr old in 1958, twenty or so keen young boys piled into a 12' clinker, and the trusty Seagull took us the 300+ yards to the sand dunes on the other side of the channel! Col, NZ.

    Superb Seagull - and video.
    A good few years ago I rebuilt one for a fisherman in Ireland. "It doesn't go."
    Sorted points. Cleaned carb. Went first pull - but NO drive to prop.
    Investigated and found the very cheap square tube 'driveshaft' had worn away internally until round rather than square - so just spun on hardened square gear shaft at bottom ...
    Would have been dangerous if out at sea when it finally failed.
    Cleaned out and reassembled it [new tube] with a dollop of grease internally to prolong the life. Would therefore recommend this on any Seagull with a cheap square tube 'shaft'. Bad design 'feature' ?

    Great stuff really enjoyed it , just got a 40+ £20 it has the villers carb and ignition, I'm determined to make it run again !!!!

    My Seagul was the 102. It had the cylindrical cast iron head and block with circular tube type tank. Very good to me in my early fishing years.

      The round block type were excellent they didn`t suffer from what became known as "block rot" being a superior casting

    Thanks for your interesting video, i just bought a century and had it running today but i knew it wasn't quite right so i shut it off. To my amazement there were 3 cyclinder bolt nuts missing an one still attached. i couldn't belive it ran haha currently fixing it now. cyclinder an piston is near on perfect so i think she'll be a good runner. one guestion i have is, what is the screw next to where the coil wire under the fly wheel used for?

    It is possible to buy a needle for the carbs that increase the efficiency from 10:1 to 25:1 fuel mix. Also replacing the gaskets will prevent drip. I read that even in the old days, owners used a cup to catch the tickle overflow. Not bad polluters at all.

      You can, but I wouldn`t the oil is not just for "lubrication" ! if you want good info on these go to SOS = save old seagulls website probably the most reliable source

      @@poroldchap Not strictly true, SOS do a conversion kit if you want to change the ratio, all 4 of mine are now 25:1, makes for easy mixing!

    Hi - I have a recoil model - think it's a featherweight - but I was trying to start it today and it would go, and now the recoil doesn't pull properly after trying it quite a few times. It did work but has been on the back of the boat during winter. Can I try to start it in the traditional way if I get hold of the starting pulley, if I take the recoil top off??

      Why anyone would want a recoil on a seagull is beyond me ! its more to go wrong its more bulk its increased weight etc.if a seagull won`t start after a few pulls then something is wrong ....
      to answer your question if you remove the recoil in most cases you will find provision is already there for a cord pull if not a pulley can be easy fitted

      I realised that I had not been trying to start it properly and now the part of the recoil that expands when you pull the thing has sheared on the inside so will not pull now! I can remove the recoil and there is provision for the traditional method! Thanks

    I recently got a free century 100 lls that was completely ceased up. I have cleaned the carb but unfortunately
    I will have to risk taking the head off and somehow freeing the piston. Sos did a tutorial but it requires hitting the piston quite hard via a piece of wood and a hammer so I am not sure if it will still be good after that. the good news is it has a perfectly fine carb is fairly corrosion free apart from the heads of a couple of nuts which are slightly rusted. it's not bad considering I got it for nothing (I got it for an interesting project in the restoration and not necessarily for the outboard it's self but it should be nice to play with on my tender)

      100+ is way to big for a tender and I would not recommend a "hammer" to fix any engine !

      poroldchap by ceased I mean the cylinder and the piston are corroded so that they are physically attached to one another. A hammer is the only real option to free them. Saving old seagulls recommend you do it so I may try it and just hope I don't break anything. Also I know 100 is way too big for my tender but I know my tender will take a 8hp 4stroke (max) so this should be ok and since I got given it I couldn't exactly choose which engine. If I had the choice I would go for a 40 featherweight as that would probably be the right size for a small tender. If you can think of any other way of freeing up the piston please let me know as I see you know seagulls quite well. Thanks

      May be a good idea to take the plug out and apply diesel/hydraulic fluid and leave it to penetrate for a few days,

      @@poroldchap It'll be bust or fixed by now but yes, soaking for a week then a bit of heat then cold treatment a few times to get the metals expanding and contracting before a hammer and a round wooden drift the same size as the piston...
