    Spyderco describes the Chaparral as G10/Carbon fiber laminate. See here: www.spyderco.com/catalog/category/all. Peel ply refers to solid carbon fiber with a textured surface, found on some models. This is different than G10/CF laminate.

    I like the video but it ended up being more about the Chaparral than the Sage. IMO the Chaparral should not even have made the comparison, its a much smaller special purpose knife. It would be better to throw the Native in instead. Ergonomically, I've always liked the Sage and its a good all around EDC blade as is the Native, Manix and Delica.
    I do wish Spyderco would get back to their roots and realize that other companies are putting full thickness carbon fiber on their knives at a fraction of the price. They say they do it to keep costs down, but that doesn't seem to be passed on to us customers. For another example, look at the Chaparral price vs the Sage or Native. Why so much more expensive? It actually uses LESS material and grinding a blade is grinding a blade. You start with stock as close to the end thickness you can get and go from there. It just seems to me the only reason for their pricing model, especially of late, is greed. Its too bad, they were (past tense) a great company. Now they are going down the same road Benchmade did...price going up and up and quality down and down. Die hard fanboys won't switch but a lot of us will. I've carried Spyderco's since the first Clipit. As of last week I'm carrying a Steel Will Cutjack Mini...at a MUCH better price (and I get a fun flipper to boot). For anyone interested, Amazon prime has the Steel Will Cutjack Mini for $23USD. That's up $2 from when I ordered mine 5 days ago. Let me tell you, its a Delica killer.

      I know I'm late to the party, but on the cf/g10 argument I've heard arguments that part of the continuing use of the laminate is due to balance reasons. I responded with a suggestion that balance issues would be better sorted out via the size & location of the skeletonizing liner cuts.

    Great comparison video! Per the Spyderco website the Chaparral is a Carbon Fiber/G10 laminate: www.spyderco.com/catalog/details/C152CF/Chaparral-Carbon-Fiber-G-10-Laminate/672
    Peel ply is often confused as being CF/G10 laminate but actually refers to the texture. Peel ply is what you get on nearly all G10 that isn't contoured or polished. The Sage 5 is both, CF/G10 laminate with peel ply texture. The Caly 3.5 is full CF with no texture. As always, keep up the good work!

    • @frederickj.7136
      @frederickj.7136 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ...And "stay sharp!" heh, heh... What about the Caly 3.0, BTW -- is that the same CF material as on the 3.5?
      Also, I note that the Calys do not have the same chamfering bevel to the outside edges of the scales as the Sage 1 does. The Sage 1 was already painful in my own hand *before* even attempting any work. It simply had to be returned. Can sections of a Caly's scale edges be 'rounded' a bit manually with some moderately abrasive tools if it's otherwise a keeper and feel in hand is an issue? I'd worry about the effect on a two ply scale, as on the Sage (delamination?). I know that the Caly 3.5 is a Tyler favorite! Thanks.

    • @Gpknives
      @Gpknives 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct sir, the Caly 3.5 is one of my top 5 carried and used knives. Caly 3 & 3.5 have same handle materials in the CF versions. They should be able to be chamfered a bit around the edges so long as you don't cut into the pins. YMMV I think delamination is fairly rare with Spyderco's CF/G10 but it can happen, mostly from heavy impact such as dropping on concrete.

    I always thought the chaparral was %100 carbon fiber, since it's advertised and described that way by spyderco and every reviewer says it is, but now I'm hearing from other commenters it is peel ply. There's nothing "wrong" with it but there is when companies try to pass it off as %100 carbon fiber and charge as if it was.

    • @tonycanniffe2360
      @tonycanniffe2360 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mt. Baldwin I have seen reviews saying it is ply. Seems like a cost saving measure and deceptive I'd they are advertising it as CF. Bugs me more now as it seems Ganzo uses slabs of CF, NOT ply in a $20 knife! (There's a Ganzo disassembly video I saw last night).

    • @Gpknives
      @Gpknives 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Chaparral in the video is CF/G-10 laminate. "Peel ply" actually refers to the texture on the scales not the construction. The Caly 3.5 is full CF with no texture as opposed to the Sage 5 peel ply CF layer.

    Manix 2 for outdoors and Chaparral carbon fiber (not frn) for the better look for city & work, depending which you have. ¿Only one to do both tasks? Then the Sage 5. End of the story.

    Cool video! I really like your content! I dont want to be one of those youtube police people behind a desk telling everyone they are wrong. But i think you are using the term "peel ply" wrong. Pretty sure peel ply refers to the texture or the way they apply texture to different materials such as g10 or carbon fiber. It really is a dumb name. It really does sound like it would mean a sticky ply of carbon fiber. But again sorry, i really dont want to be one of "those" people... lol
