      I thought it was Opera House! I even Googled Opera House but the first YT video wasn't the same. Must have been the battle music, or something. Thanks, man.
      What are your thoughts on the Hap-40 Lum Tanto debacle? As a 15 year, Sal is my Hero, Spyderco fanboy, I was a bit let down.

      BirdShot IV - I agree! Liner locks are great for simple edc. And the carbon fiber on that one is much more handsome in my opinion.

    The Native and Sage are very similar. We could call a combo knife the Sative or the Nage, ya I think so!

    Speaking of Axis locks... My springs in my Griptilian both snapped. I’m not in the US. Took 6 weeks for them to send me new springs, which I’m thankful for. Just arrived today actually. In that period I couldn’t go without a knife and I exploered Spyderco. I got a Manix 2 LW, then a week later a PM2. Spyderco has changed my understanding or appeal of knives. They are really quite something. The Sage line is super appealing. I’m thinking the G10 version in Maxamet would be a good one as I don’t like the carbon stuff.

    I think Spyderco did a great job on the design of the sage line of knives and Spyderco’s Taiwan factory is first rate on fit and finish.Very slicey blade geometry and extremely comfortable in hand. I agree with Pete,the best way to grip this knife by far is utilizing the forward finger choil.I Love all the different lock mechanisms on the Sage line and i would like to see a new one come out with the ball bearing lock,marbled carbon fiber scales and metal finger tabs..As Pete mentioned,they might look a little vanilla but trust me just use it for a while and you will see/feel the magic,🪄I have three different Sage models,1,2,and the lightweight and they just plain work👍

    G10 has nearly identical density to CF composite, as both are fiber reinforced composites with polymer matrix. No need to worry about weight comparisons between the two.

  • @thomaslanders1162
    @thomaslanders1162 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sometimes boring is good..The peel ply CF dosent bother me in the least.. My Sage 1 still feels like a quality tool..It's been carried and used for years and still looks new.. I can't get a 4 finger grip behind the choil, but it's still OK.. I'm not a big fan of choils or being forced to use one..The Sage 5 looks nice but I'll probably pass due to the handle..
    I've owned 4-5 BM 940's (versions)..One of the best knife designs ever..But, it's the knife I've had the most F&F/QC problems.. No broken springs but always in the back of my mind..

  • @fxrober
    @fxrober 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Just curious, on that 940 you mention...did the Omega spring actually break, or did one end come off and out of its retaining hole? I realize it was disabled either way, as I said, just curious.

    Just got a sage 5. Out of the box the action was stiff and had lock stick on the compression lock.
    The pivot was screwed down as tight as possible. I disassembled it, cleaned, oiled. Put it back together and fiddled with the pivot tension. Loosening the pivot improved the lock stick and action, not perfect but better. If I loosen the pivot enough to get it drop shut smooth, it leaves the blade off center. So right now I've sort of compromised and have the blade slightly off center with a relatively smooth action but far from drop shut smooth. Any suggestions other than letting it break in? Thanks.

    • @StraitClownin909
      @StraitClownin909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just got my Sage 5 yesterday, I am in the exact same situation. I loosened each of the screws about an 1/8 a turn and it drops shut only when i compress with my pointer finger. There is a tiny tiny bit of play in the blade which isn't a big deal to me. I also noticed if I try to compress the lock with my middle finger and my pointer is putting pressure on the pivot it will not want to drop shut. I would much rather have a better flicker than 0 tolerance blade play. Have you figured out your sage 5 since you've been carrying it?

    Why didn't they use s35vn for the sage series? This isn't a complaint about s30v, but the sage 2 would've been a cooler tribute if it used CRK's steel as well as its lock

  • @rodrigoteresa7944
    @rodrigoteresa7944 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Peel ply is kinda stupid imo
    None of the advantages of CF and more expensive then G10. I'd rather they'd just do true G10 or true CF and charge the appropriate price.

    • @StraitClownin909
      @StraitClownin909 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree, I feel they just wanted to give it some personality. I own this sage 5, lil native and a PM2. All compression locks/s30v. I carry the Sage5 more than the other two. It's just the right size and just does everything right. Such an awesoke lesser known Spyderco knife everyone should own.

  • @kerryrwac

    It would be interesting to compare it to the Chaparral .

    • @abc456f
      @abc456f 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've had a chaparral (raffir noble) for about a year and just got a sage 5. The chaparral's slicing ability is insane, it's ground so thin. The sage 5 isn't quite as slicey but it gives you more handle so it's a nice compromise. I prefer larger knives but for everyday light duty tasks, the sage 5 is tough to beat.

    I like Spyderco , I have 3 Para 2's , I bought them at different times , the Quality Control for the lock is trash thou , i just had too many problems with them , all the compression locks work differently , the first 1st was smooth as butter and thats what sold me on the knife , the 2nd one I had to work the lock for about 3 months and a year later its still not as smooth as the first 1, the 3rd still doesn't drop shut ,lve taken it apart , everthing you name it , I did it. PLUS , the problems I've had with the Chinese Fakes invading everywhere, I had to sent 2 , yes 2 back for a refund , thank God it was Amazon , no problems with refunding me, but these other Big knife store Don't want to give your money back, they basically call you a liar or say it "didn't leave the store like that " so you take it in the Ass for $120.00 or so , just alot of bullshit and its ashame . So I just stick with Benchmade's now , I have a few and Never had a problem with the Axis lock, they all dropped shut right from the box , and the last 2 yrs they have really stepped up the QC , like the Benchmade of old , and I don't have to worry about the F--kin Chinese Fakes . Well , thats my 2 cents on the subject.

    Yours is the first Spyderco review which I have seen mention the hot spot issue with that prominant, sharply radiused edge on the deep carry wire clip. In my own hand, I would have to go further, saying that in reference to a Sage 1 (same clip location), I have experienced off-putting discomfort within a minute or so... every time. One of three ergonomic hot spots for me -- deal breakers, basically -- on the as yet unused Sage 1. FYI... YMMV.

    To me the Chapparal seems to be a much better knife to giveaway to someone. Better steel, super slicey (the blade is even thinner than the sage 5), easy to use back lock, no ugly lanyard hole and way cheaper if you go with the FRN version. The only thing missing for some is the fidget factor. But none knife people are not gonna be playing with the knife all the time anyway.

    • @StraitClownin909
      @StraitClownin909 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah compression lock is a must for me. I love to fidget with these knives. My wife would probably make good use of a chaperral in her purse. She wont fuck with the knife like i need to.

  • @quark7021

    Ey Pete, point of clarification on “peel ply”: it doesn’t refer to lamination of cf over g-10 (as in plywood), but rather to a peeling process that gets the rough texture on the cf (and most of Spyderco’s g-10). IIRC the peel-ply cf on the sage 5 is cf through and through, but I don’t have one myself. The “hilly” texture on the laminated sage 1/ chaparral cf is produced by... vacuum something something. I forget what Sal called it. I’ve got a sage 1 and quite like the laminated stuff, fwiw.
    New intro is awesome btw

    I get what you're saying about the knife being a bit dull or crowd pleasing. I also got that feeling, especially when comparing with the Para 3. they're very similar knives but something about the Sage just seems a bit bland. this is more prevalent with the FRN version I believe though, where the CF G10 does seem a bit more high quality and less bland IMO. I believe the satin blade finish with grind marks also play into this. I'd be willing to bet a stonewashed satin type finish would help this blade feel more boutique.
