    Mate!! This video was so good! I really enjoyed watching how you mix your drums... I am a drum and bass producer but I take a lot of inspiration from rock music and have been using addictive drums to help with finding that organic acoustic sound. Your video really helped me to understand a bit more with how to apply and mix in overheads and room mics into your drum bus, which previously I was confused over...
    I am using the Scarlett focusrite 18i20 3rd gen - I believe it has almost identical ins and outs to the Apollo that you own.
    Would you be able to do more of these types of videos? I’d be really keen to see how you layer / process your drums further and how you mix them in with vocals and other instruments! 🥁 🎸
    Big up from UK!

    Great video fat sounding drums 😎👍 if you are looking for another interface to try: check out Apogee Element R88 great preamps and converters and you get some cool plugins to. if you are looking on a pricepoint the Apollo 8xp expanded via adat lightpipe with a Scarlett or Audient ASP 800 is very hard to beat. The features differs a bit betwen the interfaces but using the hmx or ironmode on kick and snare or on the overheads Can be useful so can the Air mode on the Focusrite. Also mentioned should be Steinberg UR RT the transparent Yamaha D preamp coupled with a Neve transformer is a great combination that gives you the option of a transperent sound or transformer saturation with the Neve transformer switched in.

    Great video! Finally came across something more in my style of music (rock). Question: I can’t seem to find an answer to this, but is there a way to manipulate the UA pres and effects in console during mixing? In other words, after tracking. It’s too burdensome to go back and forth recording, listening, tweaking and then being married to that sound for the mix. I’d like to be able to manipulate the tracks like I do when recording straight into to logic. Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

      I have an X4 with an X16 and a PCIe Octo card. Not too mention 101 UAD Plugs. I do not know how the 8P converters sound. I had a MADI RME FX and Antelope Orion 32 In/Out previously. Still in my rack and in computer. Nothing like having $4800 retail value worth of interfaces and converters you do not use. Of course I am hoping to get about 2K when I finally have the courage to depart with them. You will love the X4. I use it as a monitor controller. 2 HP outs on it. Visual feedback right in front of me of mic pre/line levels. Can change the Unison software plug levels by using the large knob on the X4. I have 6 more D/A of conversion by using the 4 Line Outs into my mixer and the 2 monitor outs. I can use the monitor outs due to my X16 being the monitor converter for Console 2.0. I even used the HP 2 out at one point for its 2 Channels of stereo DA into my mixer using 8 outs total, saving HP 1 for my headphone monitoring. Using the HP2 out for 2 channel DA into the mixer is a little tricky needing to use a cue send. BE AWARE that there are no virtual channels on the X4 since it is a desktop interface. I was not aware of that before I bought it. I make use of my X16 with the cue send with the X4. As far as the sound of the Apollo X converters, they sound very detailed and modern to me. I really like the converters. I can be free to color them with my outboard gear. I think if you are looking for Burl sound, from what I hear it is starkly different. I think after 20 years I have finally grown use to today's audio sonics. Hybrid digital/Analog to me is the best of both worlds.

    I just purchased an Apollo x8p and I’m curious about something. Your tracking drums by yourself and for the final take your burning in the preamps and compressors. How did you fine tune those plugins before doing the final take? Did you have to put down takes and listen back to the printed plugins then adjust and do it again until it was right? Do you use the plugins in pro tools first to fine tune over a demo and then take those same settings and apply them in console to do a final burn in? Or does console let you monitor playback through the console channels until your ready to burn in takes? I’m confused as to how to tune the preamps by yourself without a second set of ears in isolation getting the plugins ready to print.

  • @jonathankessler4684
    @jonathankessler4684 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Question about the mono “drummer perspective” mic! Did you use a condenser and if so what was the polar pattern? Did you just use straight cardioid or Omni? Cause I wanna try this out possibly with a ribbon but not sure how it’d fare. I like the content so far though, consider me subscribed!

    • @AndrewMasters

      I use a large diaphragm condenser in cardioid! It’s one of my favorite positions. I’ve used the gt66 forever because I had one, but I just got the wa87 and it’s great. A ribbon my would probably sound great, I would probably use a mini ribbon over a stereo ribbon unless that is replacing your overheads as the phasing might get a bit confusing. Cheers!

    Hello Andrew. I currently use a Scarlett 18i20 in conjunction with a focusrite Octo Pre dynamic for a total of 16inputs. I like what I've been able to do with them so far, but I am intrigued about the Apollo x8p, specially because of their line of plug ins. What can you tell me about these two interfaces having used them both? Also, do you have any outboard preamps that you use in your studio? If so, do they sound any different from the ones in plug in format from the Apollo? Hope I can get some feedback from you. Your drums sounded great by the way. Cheers.

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, Thanks for the comment. Yes the Apollo is an excellent tool and great asset for the studio. Their plug-ins alone are fantastic. When you get the interface you control it via their "console" software. Being able to record/monitor their plug-ins in real-time with almost no latency is incredible.
      I also have 2 outboard pre amps. They are the wa273 pres from warm audio. They are clones of the neve 1073/1081 pre amp, which is incredible. If I'm not recording drums my signal chain 100% of the time is mic-wa73-apollo x. I will usually throw a UA 1176 in the chain as well. The end result is unbelievable.
      I'll be doing more videos breaking this down as it has improved my workflow tremendously.

      Yes, I have both connected. I use an ADAT cable to receive the inputs from the focusrite in the Apollo “console” the bnc cable allows me to use the internal clock from the Apollo. Which is far better than the clock from the focusrite interface.

    • @gabriellove4361
      @gabriellove4361 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AndrewMasters yeah exactly, the clarret has 8 line inputs and hence an additional adat i/o. but the apollo can only take one adat input. the reason i'm getting the apollo x8p, is so I can possibly run it through some incoming analog compressors + maybe analog preamps on stuff like vocals.

    • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gabriel Love The primary reason to use the Apollo x is the software and quality conversion etc. As far as inputs, I’m not sure if you could connect multiple clarrets together via Adat or what the option would be there. • @AndrewMasters
      @AndrewMasters  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me it’s all in the room I’m mixing in. Is what I’m hearing accurate? Or is it going to change when I leave the room. That’s why I went with the specific room design I did. The room you’re in can cause or prevent problems depending on the acoustics/treatment. Before I had this room I did a lot of car tests with my mixes. One of my first videos was about that workflow back when I was in a small apartment.

Has anyone you know or reading this compared this with the Focusrite Plug ins Red 2&3 suite eq,comp..for pure end result of recording a near studio quality recording ? From a basic understanding the UAD you can use say the NEVE pre amp and add what comp,eq they have available where the Focusrite your relying on there stock pre amps with eq & comp to your liking..Focusrite don't have a pre amp emulation plug in option just comp and eq.

    You have to admit, its easy to just mix a single drum kit. No biggie. Most Home studio's can handle that. When you start to track bass, guitars (especially heavy dropped tuned, over dubbed, lead guitar, guitar harmony, etc...), and all the permutations of vox, this mix will start to show its weakness. When you solo'ed a few isolated tracks, its obvious, you needed to clean up the bleed. Go thru every track to make sure ONLY the sound you want is present on that track. Its not always possible to get it 100% but you can do a lot just by editing out the extra bleed/noise. I would like to hear your "Final Production Mix" with a full ensemble of a band or whatever. Not to mention final mastering which is a totally different discipline. Show us that, then we can tell if you are legit. By the way, your review of Apollo x8p was not bad.
