    i laughed to myself when they mentioned girl techs. back in highschool autotech we had a girl and nobody wanted to partner up with. I decided to partner up with her only to find this girl had ocd. we took apart and rebuilt a small engine but what i remember is that i did all the work and she kept me organized by placing everything neatly on the table and labeling parts and torque specs and in what order i gave em to her haha we never started the engines or raced to see who would fire up first but we sure where the first to put it back together and have a free day that week meanwhile everyone else finished up their motors. Good memories.

      Warndog Just after 11:00 you can see the text that they are doing a speed way to and this is a Demo only. They state that they know they aren't following the torque patterns. It's only a "Demo".

    • @Warndog9
      @Warndog9 9 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Of course they know they're not following them. If you know how to assemble a motor you know about torque patterns. Goes without saying.

    • @timramich
      @timramich 8 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      +Warndog Yeah, I don't get that either. If they took the time to do something like line up timing marks, then why not do everything else properly? The competition should have been to build an engine that's put together properly as fast as they can, not just a demo to see who can wrench the fastest.

    • @torque63
      @torque63  10 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      they probably could've used a ratchet with the same results, I 100% agree about the torque wrench use and when a tech is torqueing a bolt it's a steady pull until the "click' happens. This is a demonstration of speed, if everything was done "by the book" it would take a couple of hours to put this together. The guys know the right way to do things, do you see anyone using their turn signals on a racetrack when they pass someone?

      matthew cory Hey Matthew, thanks for asking. I did open my own shop with a partner after 25 years. I'm the shop oriented kind of guy, not the front end/service writer kind of guy, I'm not user friendly. My partner was the service writer type, so when we met we decided to open a shop together, and it was good until he contracted pneumonia and later passed away at 53, and I couldn't do it without him so I closed after three years. My biggest problem with mechanicing is the pay style, flat rate, no other occupation gets paid the same way, and it needs to be updated severly, and also cars are no longer fun to work on with all the computers and the manufacturers stuffing more and more stuff into a smaller space, if you have big hands like me it is sometimes impossible to fit into the tight spaces. I still love wrenching on older stuff and do so all the time, just on my time. I also work on small engine stuff and such, and weld and do carpentry and also create stained glass art.

    I can build entire cars, but I'm not a mechanic...cuz I don't have the ugly shirt. I also set the timing correctly before ever attempting to start an engine. I've never had an engine I built fail to start on the first bump. I've only built 5 though, all old school 60's tech, with points and old school voltage regulators you can actually fix, where you can see if somethings wrong, clean it and get another 50,000 miles out of it...not a bunch of sealed little black plastic boxes that cost 60-80 bucks. Old school, you can get home using coke cans and shoe strings...new stuff, better call a tow truck.

      Most of the american cars went to the scrap heap at 40-50K.
      I'm still driving my 1968 first generation Corolla every day...it's at about 1,2 million...but I DO put fresh rings and bearings in about every 250-300K just for giggles.and I get 50 mpg.

      My father mentioned this. It was even a common folk participating, as in a 'if we can do it so can you'. Now everything's rigged so as to be only worked on by professionals and cost us hefty sums. It's all about the money. On the other hand, the fine men and women at dealerships/body shops would be out of work. =\

      In Top Fuel, Pro-stock. Any professional racing. Top fuel technicians rebuild the engine after every single run. From the car getting pushed into the shop to the car cranking back up, it's around 30 minutes. 8 to 10 minutes to tear it down and then around 20 to rebuild it.

    the nice thing about the sbc is all you need is a 9/16 a 5/8 a 1/2 and a 7/16. just to get the power steering off my mustang it took half the dam tool box. all the old engines were this way. try this with a new engine, it'd take an hr at the very least just because of all the different sockets and wrench sizes.

I know exactly what is involved in just slapping the parts together, honestly on an SBC there ain't much to it. Hitting the torque specs, properly mating surfaces, lubing and tuning ready to rock would make this a much more meaningful performance to me.
