I have to say, 2012 RAM 3500 has been down for 3 weeks now and I have tested and tried everything and all seemed okay. I happened to stumble across this video today and this was the issue. Thank you so much for this video, saved me money. I have never taken a truck anywhere to get something fixed and I was so irritated that this would be the first, but not now!!! Thank you again.
My husband's 2007 Dodge Ram has the same connector. He was preparing to have it towed to the Dodge dealership when I came across you video. Thanks for posting!
First off good video. A family members 04 dodge regular cab 2wd wouldn’t start. I looked/checked everything under the hood. Tested starter/ battery/ fuses/ relays/ pulled the harness to the fuse block and from the computer on the firewall. I even cleaned all the grounds in the starting system. Left the truck overnight, came home and hit google. Seen your video didn’t think much of it moved on. Watched a few others and read some forums. Came back to the truck in the morning to give it another go. Looking up under the dash at me was that plug. In the floorboard, the key... Its an aftermarket anti theft device. You happen to have a similar truck. Thank you sir.
Dude! Came across this video by chance, was at the end of my rope and ready to have the truck towed to the dealership and fork out prob over 2k for a module which they said was the issue. I have the same stupid disconnect switch and it was staring at me in the face. I played with it, and the rig fired right up! You saved me a ton of money!!!! Thanks for posting this!!!
Dude, this was a lifesaver! This just happened on my truck today and nothing was adding up to the usual culprits. But this here was the fix! Thanks for posting!
i have a 03 dodge ram 2500 and i had something that looked kind of like what you have i unplugged it cleaned it and plugged it back up and that dam red blinking light was gone and i could start my truck again. Thanks man you saved me.
I have a 2009 Ram SLT and how you recorded the no crank or anything is exactly how it sounds. Gonna try this out and hopefully this will solve my problem. Thanks again!
Kyle I want to thank you for this video. My truck was doing the same thing and I ran across this video. (after tracing and testing for 4 days). Luckily I found this thing and pluged it in and the old girl cranked right up. Go figure
Is a starter interrupt I have installed many of these as the sales dept sold them as added security, they are made to remove the key when you get out and push it back in when you return to the car, these are garbage especially when they are removed and reinstalled many times they get a bad contact and burn best thing to do is remove and reattach the yellow wires solder or butt connector
I thought it might be a module for a court ordered breathalyzer. I've been having trouble with my 07. At first all I had to do was wait and it would eventually work. But the wait kept getting longer and longer. I found this video while waiting, took out the plug, blew on it and presto instantly started. Crazy.
yesterday my truck did the exact same thing.only difference my 2006 ram where it shows what gear u are in lite up every gear. like when u put it in drive the d lights up,all mine had the lite up square around them. but did the same exact thing wld no crank. I didn't know what to do. I rolled it to try to fix a stuck starter. I took off the battery terminal for a sec then put it back on. it started and is ok for now. bur was trying to look up and see what cld have caused it. I'm glad I seen ur video bc I expect I be dealing with this again. thank you
I am having a similar issue with my 1998 Dodge 5.2 conversion van except, when I turn the key, I can hear a click down in the doghouse area. (starter solenoid maybe?) I pulled off my dash and discovered that I have an after market DEI security system installed. I looked up the model number and downloaded the user's manual for it and discovered that it also comes with a starter disconnect option for anti-theft. I did not get a key fob with the van when I bought it and had no idea it had any of this in there. I have that same yellow wire as you have coming from the ignition switch and it has been split and goes into a relay that I am guessing is the starter disconnect relay. I am going to jump the relay and see if it starts. If not, I will test the starter to see if it is getting a signal from the ignition switch or not. Thanks for posting this video as, my service manual wiring diagram shows a brown and yellow wire coming from the ignition switch which I do not have, but I do have that exact same yellow wire as you show in your video and wires from the security system box go into 3 relays of which one is the one that attaches to the split yellow wire.
It is a DEI ignition cut out. It was an aftermarket option for high crime areas, and offered the owner of one of these devices a discount for insurance. Common up to the next gen OBD II wiring. Now, for security, auto makers simply cut fuel sending for security purposes. Simply reattach your starter wire. Problem solved
It is an aftermarket anti theft divice. The Dodge Dealer I bought it from installed it on all their new trucks. My truck is a one owner truck and it had it when I bought it. You disconnect it when you shut it off and take it along with your keys.
You saved me a lot of time! I have a 1999 Dodge Ram. I've been trying to see what I needed to buy as far as parts or battery or a starter. All of them tested good. I'm going to try this!! A little bit of research can go a long way!!! After this I had to subscribe! 💯💯💯
Awesome, I'm glad I could help you out! I have fixed many vehicles through Google and TH-cam, so I'm just paying it forward by posting a unique situation that most wouldn't think about. Luckily it worked for many of us, you and I included 😊
THANK YOU, sent 6-8 hrs trying to figure wtf happened after i did brakes, calipers and ball joints n more but wouldn't start . was going to go buy a starter, watched a video of how to bypass and test. with both the test and the started worked fine. i was at a loss. new relay didnt fix either. after this video i walked out and there it was. mine had one too. slightly different looking. looks like it was original. and still mounted . i owe u a case of beer at least. cant thank you enough 04 dodge ram 1500 4.7L.... btw
This sure as hell helped me, I tested starter, ignition, installed a new/used TIPM and was at a loss. My '05 ram has an aftermarket alarm/theft system, messed with the connector and fired right up. Hope thats all it was!
Saw one of these gizmos on a 90s Camaro, on hers the socket broke, using a multimeter hers had 3 circuits going through it, but the key itself had to be the right key, example pin 1 would go through the key and end up on opposite end on pin 7, pin 2 back out on pin 5, etc etc.......lets say there where 9 different keys made, all had different in/out positions so only a key #3 would start her car......finally ohmed her key out and cut wires then spliced proper in/outs together bypassing that crap. Other comments are correct, it’s an additional anti theft device, apparently popular in higher crime areas, rudimentary starter disable Also watch for the old “pager” disable modules......basically black box car dealers installed for buy here pay here, under dash, if you where late on payment the “paged” your number and car no start......worked similar and very easy to bypass
It is a kill switch for the starter. I had to pull one off of a 1994 VW Jetta I purchased years ago because it stopped working all together. I didn't think they still made those. :)
That is a starter interrupt. Usually put in by the car dealership in case you miss the payments they shut it down. It also has a tracking device in it.
I had the same problem with a used Mazda 6 I bought. I ended up removing the after market system that the previous owner put in. Went to the dealer and bought a key phob. Problem solved
Had same problem on the starter of Dodge ram 1500,wiggle wire, changed ignition switch, finally changed starter, tada, it was the starter, oil had leaked on the starter and shorted something out..
Aftermarket security connection for disabling your car/truck. My ford came with one, and I never gave it much thought. I just leave stuff alone that works, but I think I'm going to rewire it back to original to reduce the chance of this happening.
I have an '04 15000 5.7 hemi, too, but mine is a two door. Same exact color, too. Any rate, since i just purchased it with only 87,000 miles and two previous owners, I hoped it would be a dependable vehicle. Well, so far i have had to replace the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. Now I get a transmission indicator light showing up and it looks like I may have to replace the transmission line pressure sensor. Hoping that cures it all, but we shall see. Have you had to deal with that in the past on your Dodge Ram? Thanks for the video.
I think many of these are put in by the dealer. My 2003 dodge ram was brand new 13 miles when I bought it I asked for the alarm package and it looks like somebody put it in at home and the parts are made from China. I have an 02 dodge ram that we bought used that has different parts, but basically the same thing . I think the dealers just pay somebody to put this crap in . You think there’d be OEM wiring harness that can be directly hooked in from the factory, but I guess that would be too easy
My 4.7 same issue. Just happens to be coldest day of the season. So saw this video. Reached under dash and a contraption fell out. Wiggled it truck started. It looks nothing like yours. Some kind of override maybe? Thanks.
I had a Nissan Altima in the 90's that had one of these anti theft devices installed real low- but accessible on the dash. It is definitely made to have the "key" removed to prevent theft of the vehicle.
You may not be a car guru, but there are many that claim to be and actually know less. All I can say is THANK YOU for being limber enough to show us old guys what we can't get to. I give credit to all the guys/gals out there making videos. It's the old saying; "Two heads are bettern one" deal. You keep lending what knowledge you DO have, and FUCK the ones that claim otherwise.
I kid you not I have one of these in my 87 IROC that was there when I got it 20 some years ago, but yep antitheft key chip, didn't think they even still installed these in vehicles
It's a kill CHIP switch and it's generally installed by NEW car dealerships that sell used cars. It's just a gimmick to up sell a security feature and they tell you that you'll save on insurance. It's usually part of your key ring and you are supposed to disconnect it every time you leave your car.
😂😂😂 exactas what it was. I have a brand new starter I don’t need and also checked fuses and wiring harnesses. 😂😂😂 I took that piece out flipped it and it started. Thank you sir
This is exactly what my 2006 1500 is doing , but i cant find this thing, if it even has one . Where is/was yalls located if somewhere other then just under the steering wheel ?
Had one of those on my 1994 GMC that bought new the dealer installed it. Just remove it from the truck and reconnect the two yellow wires together and it will work just fine
Yep say ya get it from a car lot.they use that to track ya in case ya don't pay and they can find where you're at so they can repo it back and sometimes they come loose to cause ya to not be able to start ur truck
Thats an after market immobilizer, it is a manual way to starter kill a car breaking the same circuit that car alarms kill when they go off This was the gheto version, for the budget minded.
Hey bro im on my mothers phone looking up no start isues and came across your video. Ive seen those before im pretty sure its s cheap anti theft device from the 90's thay you are suppose to take out when you leave and plug back in to start your car\truck. Its ridicousely easy to figure out if you take the plastic off the key. It is a fancy kill switch.
Your correct, and it is useless as wired in my vehicle. They clipped all but the interrupt wires so you can easily see that all you need to do is connect the remaining wires to bypass it.
I was driving 70 miles an hour and notheing and mine just costed to the side of the road. After 5000 dollors of work. And the key comes on nothing from starter. Thank you. Yes I'm still looking. Darn thing 30 thousand and still a paper weight. Lol
Thrift lock to keep somebody from stealing the vehicle is smart but if you didn't know your vehicle it will cost you a lot of money and figuring it out
yes its an old school aftermarket Anti-Theft device I just picked up a Ford explorer gentleman made me aware of that device as I purchased the vehicle because he had the same issue that you are having or had bumped it with his knee couldn't figure out why it wouldn't start
Nice find, the Dodge ram ues to be the #1 stolen truck in the country I can see why it was installed. I own a 07 Ram and the first few years I could not sleep at night thinking someone was going to steal my truck .
I have a 04 4.7l quad cab that keeps blowing fuse #25. It will not start. Could this be my problem? Before my mechanic sends it to a dodge dealership. Please let me know
Does anyone know if the 98 ram 1500 magnum has one of these? i replaced the ignition switch and it wouldn’t start still. Took it to the dodge dealership to get the keys programmed to the ignition but they said they aren’t programmable im running out of options the trucks still at the dealer. Need help!
I Have the same issue but I don't have that plug under my dash its been almost 7 months and still can't figure it out and no money to have someone look at it
You must be too young to know it, but that is a secret decoder device to replace the secret decoder ring provided by the Malt-O-Meal company when Little Orphan Annie lost her ring. Probably has great value, so don't toss it. :-)
I have to say, 2012 RAM 3500 has been down for 3 weeks now and I have tested and tried everything and all seemed okay. I happened to stumble across this video today and this was the issue. I'm so glad to hear when this video fixes other people's vehicles. You and I definitely are not the only ones who had this problem.. Glad to help!
i have a 2002 dodge ram delayed start in the winter time . i will check this and see if it is the problem .
My husband's 2007 Dodge Ram has the same connector. He was preparing to have it towed to the Dodge dealership when I came across you video. Thanks for posting!
Glad to hear it helped you out!

I'm glad I could help! I didn't think there'd be many others with this problem, but you proved me wrong
It is a factory option..I bought my truck new with the device mounted under the steering column
I didn't think anyone else would have this goofy disconnect switch. But you're like the 8th person who's had it so far. Glad to be of help!
Gonna look to see if my Durango has one. I'm ready to pull my hair out! And have no one to help, so I'm on my own here. lol Yikes
@@Earthgal1964 I hope this was your problem as well and you don't need to go to a mechanic
@@theisk3 So it is factory?
@@deanfirnatine7814 no it isn't. It's an aftermarket ignition interrupt. The general consensus is its a cheap anti theft device.
Dude, this was a lifesaver! This just happened on my truck today and nothing was adding up to the usual culprits. But this here was the fix! Thanks for posting!
I was on the road and my truck started smoking,,, it is low on oil but I just added two quarts and it still won’t start. What should I do ?
Did you have the same thing he had? Or what did you find out to be.
i have a 03 dodge ram 2500 and i had something that looked kind of like what you have i unplugged it cleaned it and plugged it back up and that dam red blinking light was gone and i could start my truck again. Thanks man you saved me.
Thanks for posting. Dealers are getting too expensive and just throwing parts at it.
2:45 ...'and this funky thing.' Priceless. But I've used the other f-word. Don't know how many times I've been there with my '05. Good work dude!
I am going to dig into my truck before the tow truck gets here. Thank you!!!!
This sure helped me out. Got it going in less than a minute, thank you
I love you man. Fixed my problem right up
But you figured it out yourself!! Strong work
I have a 2009 Ram SLT and how you recorded the no crank or anything is exactly how it sounds. Gonna try this out and hopefully this will solve my problem. Thanks again!
did it work ?
Kyle I want to thank you for this video. My truck was doing the same thing and I ran across this video. (after tracing and testing for 4 days). Luckily I found this thing and pluged it in and the old girl cranked right up. Go figure
It got frustrating didn't it? I'm glad this video helped you out.
It’s an aftermarket kill switch. Eliminate that plug and reconnect the yellow wire and never look back lol. Thanks for the vid 👍🏽
THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH! My '95 has one and that was the problem! Thank you again. You are a life saver! God Bless you!

You save my life man thank you I found the “power plug” cleaned it out and put it back In and it turned right up thank you mannn
Maybe not saved your life. But saved you lots of money at the mechanic! Glad it helped you out

Yes I had a dodge nitro and it has that plug under dash. It is just an anti theft system.

That is a starter interrupt. Usually put in by the car dealership in case you miss the payments they shut it down. It also has a tracking device in it.
Well.. you fixed my problem. You get a like and a subscribe
Glad to help!
Are you sure that truck didn't have a blow and go interlock at one time?
Yea it is an antitheft device
My Ford Taurus came with one from the dealer
Great if you leave it at the airport
Or high crime area
I had the same problem with a used Mazda 6 I bought. I ended up removing the after market system that the previous owner put in. Went to the dealer and bought a key phob. Problem solved
I had the same problem, but I had nothing to plug into it . So I cut the wires and put them together . Started right up . And does fine
Wtf really
Had same problem on the starter of Dodge ram 1500,wiggle wire, changed ignition switch, finally changed starter, tada, it was the starter, oil had leaked on the starter and shorted something out..
It's an anti theft device. Old style... the part that you pull out actually has that hole on it it to attach to key ring
Aftermarket security connection for disabling your car/truck. My ford came with one, and I never gave it much thought. I just leave stuff alone that works, but I think I'm going to rewire it back to original to reduce the chance of this happening.

Looks like a disabler wired in to the ignition switch, looks like an aftermarket theft device circuit

This is exactly what my 2006 1500 is doing , but i cant find this thing, if it even has one . Where is/was yalls located if somewhere other then just under the steering wheel ?
It's a GPS with starter interrupter used lots that buy here pay here use them to retrieve cars that are past due
Had one of those on my 1994 GMC that bought new the dealer installed it.
Just remove it from the truck and reconnect the two yellow wires together and it will work just fine

My trucks having the same issues but I have no dash lights and it seems like if I move. Wires under the fuse box sometimes it starts
Magen I turn on my truck, my brake light and abs stays on for a little bit too. Why is that?
It called * vehicle starter interrupter*...a name brand was the PROLOCK...A LOT OF DEALERS WOULD INSTALL THESE TO CHARGE UP TO $1000!!!....

That is a "silencer" and it is part of an alarm system.
It's remote start or ignition bypass for alarm
it is a locktronics system, big in the late 90's
I removed mine when I first got my truck back in 2012 because I work for big o tires and these was common problems for dodge
I have few and use to put them in all my vehicles
I have a 04 4.7l quad cab that keeps blowing fuse #25. It will not start. Could this be my problem? Before my mechanic sends it to a dodge dealership. Please let me know
I had one on my truck, just cut it out and splice the two yellow wires together, problem solved. Mine was installed by the dealer for their security.
Does anyone know if the 98 ram 1500 magnum has one of these? i replaced the ignition switch and it wouldn’t start still. Took it to the dodge dealership to get the keys programmed to the ignition but they said they aren’t programmable im running out of options the trucks still at the dealer. Need help!
Our 97 is doing the same :(
I Have the same issue but I don't have that plug under my dash its been almost 7 months and still can't figure it out and no money to have someone look at it
What’s the name of that pat?
I wish the one I'm working on was a simple as that!
Hmmm...my 2006 Dodge Dakota is doing the same thing....will go look under the dash in the morning...
Good information thanks for sharing
Oml thank you dude that was my problem
not homemade. it was a recall that chrysler had to perform. and yes it is an antitheft. disables the starter. it is supposed to be visible
I see the light blue one it's got to be here because no ones been here
I have a 07 dodge ram 1500 4.7 I have spark fuel and crank but all it does is keep turning over but will not run
That's the remote started device conected.to the switch.
I agree.
Incorrect. Anti theft device. For high crime areas. Seen a lot of them. Remote starters do not have a chip such as this as an option.
The dealer put that on as a anti theft key. they try and sell you it. if you dont buy it,,, they just leave the key in and forget about it.
see them a lot here in va. still dont know who's putting them on the car's i kinda think it's something they do at some car lots
it looks like a remote start from back in the day
Thats a great video, what the hell was that.
Great video.....
Dealers put that on cars to cut it off by compter put the yellow to yellow it will work it can cutt off at any time wirh that black thing on it
You must be too young to know it, but that is a secret decoder device to replace the secret decoder ring provided by the Malt-O-Meal company when Little Orphan Annie lost her ring. Probably has great value, so don't toss it. :-)
Thank you!
I can’t find this, my 05 won’t start
maybe the previous owner did not want his his ol'lady driving his truck around when he was out of town
Thanks a million bro
