I lived in Taumarunui for 12 years..married a train driver..way back in 1981..we lived up sunshine way up the top...was a long walk up..esp with a pram..😂❤
Not seen such a long passenger train in New Zealand since the Silver Star? was running Auckland to Wellington. It's about as full as the Silver Star used to be too. That looks like a scrapyard to me.
Hope they will be restored, it would be a big waste to scrap them. Pity KiwiRail didn’t think of putting back a couple of Provincial services to try out the market. Trouble is this present Government are pro-truck and anti-rail, so I don’t see that happening anytime soon. An early morning train Picton to Christchurch would be a good starter, returning from Christchurch about 1600 or 1700 hours. In the North Island Napier to Wellington about 0700, returning from the capital about 1500 or 1600. Another candidate would be New Plymouth. Sadly KiwiRail have no stomach for something like this, so there we are, no long term vision!
@@peterbarrett-v9p If GVR get their DC and other DBR mainline certified, they will have the same equipment as Te Huia and could do the same job for Hamilton City Council for a lot less than the millions Kiwirail are charging them. Food for thought. These cars are in excellent condition inside. Nothing more than a good clean and paint is needed for outside. I can see GVR converting a couple of them into cafe cars and with the two driving cabs, have to complete sets for charter and excursions. Unless of course they commit them to a long term contract somewhere . . . . . . . And make a tidy profit in the process.

'Loco' myself, 1969 to 1974. Bottom of Sunshine.
Bit of an old 'Db' rumble on the climb out of Waimiha. Used to run 1254 on Morrinsville shunt in an earlier life !
The train was 9 tonnes under the max for a solo DBR, so was definitely working hard
There's nothing quite like the King Country on a good day....
The Northern Explorer looks a little shabby these days!

Te Huia carriages are refurbished from SA/SDs
I believe they are to be restored, several of these carriages have been overhauled for both the Te Huia and Capital Connection services
Some of those carriages are definitely haunted
are they being stored or getting scrapped.
When your journey ends at a steel mill, it doesn't look good..
At Mission Bush for Storage for the meantime
@@kiwirailaction3894 good.at least the are being saved.
