  • NOTE: I have noticed a few editing errors that I missed on my watch through apologies for this.
On the 8th of July 2024 The Glenbrook Vintage Railway traveled to Taumarunui with DBR 1254 to stay the night in the yard. The next day (the 9th) they traveled back to Glenbrook towing 4 SD carriages comprised of SD 5652 SD 5732 SD 5842 and SD 3199 marking a big moment in the GVR's history as they add to their growing fleet of carriages. I believe this is not the end either. At some point they will make a return to Taumarunui to pick up a handful of SA carriages they bought with the SDs both of which I assume to be restored for mainline operation. (There might be other plans for them).
My understanding is that there is not enough room currently at GVR to accommodate the both the SAs and SDs due to the entire ADL fleet being stored there, which is why they only picked up the SDs this time round.
As you can probably tell the SDs they have been sitting in Taumarunui for a long tine roughly 8-9 years. Yep crazy to think the last SA train was ran just under a decade ago (makes you feel old). Due to the long storage time and vandals, the carriages are in a real shoddy state, so for their Journey to a new home they had to be speed restricted with a few service stops (at Okahukura, Ongarue, and Waimiha) for safety purposes.
(Off the top of my head these were the speed restrictions):
    Taumarunui - Okahukura 25k
    Okahukura - Ongarue 35k
    Ongarue - Waimiha 45k
    Waimiha - Glenbrook 55k
(So bit of an easier chase)
As I grew up with the SA trains/MAXX Regional Transport in Auckland and because its a historical moment for the GVR I thought it would be pretty special to chase these things being moved, so this video is the result of that chase.
Note: I am hoping to get future movements of the SA/SD Carriages.
Special Thanks to the GVR crew for a Great Chase!
    Enjoy!

I'm originally from Piriaka mid 1960's, (south of Taumarunui) having been a former Rail Employee from Wanganui. Absolutely love the scenic view from this video footage. Unbelievable, the state of those carriages being hauled by that locomotive is a disgrace. Kiwi Rail needs a kick in the backside for abandoning these carriages in Taumarunui, and to allow them to decay and be vandalised.

It will be pretty funny if the GVR are looking to make a heritage MAXX consist. Dont they have another DBR to restore 👀👀👀

      They're getting SA5617, SA5638, SA5695, SA5703, SA5730, SA5743, SA5770, SA5818, SA5829, SD3199, SD5652, SD5762 and SD5842! So they could make several consists and become public transport 😂

Is the GVR going to purchase some of the old diesel multiple units for preservation as well?

Good effort that proves these cars can be safely towed from Taumarunui by rail rather than relying on road transport.

      @bonda01 Fog was insane
      (Not so much for drone)
Was pretty thick from Taumarunui to the south end of the Poro-o-tarao after that was clear as anything.

Neat video, good effects with the heavy fog, imagine GVR running a subbie type service from Pukekohe to Glenbrook, go G-Maxx. 😁

@zanegracie39 Growing up with the SAs I'd love to see one again and film it this time.
