I knew a guy in the Navy that jumped off an Aircraft Carrier and saved a few drowning Vietnamese who crashed their helicopter off the side of the Carrier during the fall of Saigon. He, too, was in trouble at first but got the medal as an award instead. He was just a regular guy that stepped up to the plate and saved lives.
My father who was at Pearl harbor with the 19th inf on Dec 7th - was in combat in the pacific until Jan 1945. He received the soldiers medal and it was his most prized decoration. He never told me the story, just that he got it for saving a solders life.(He has the Bz star with OLC and silver star) so this was a surprise to me as a kid. I always learn something from your presentations.
what's interesting Kennedy was originally recommended for the silver star by his commanding officer Lt. Commander Alvin Cluster Kennedy was also not the only recipient of the Navy Marine Corps Medal on PT 109 that night, Ensign Leonard Thom, the Boats XO and Ensign George H. R. "Barney" Ross an observer assigned for TD on PT 109 received the medal
The supply sergeant at my ROTC battalion (30 years ago) had won the Soldier’s Medal before taking that post. The way I heard it, a truck had caught fire and he jumped in it an drove it out of a group of soldiers, a safe distance away as it was becoming engulfed.
My great great uncle went through all four years of American involvement in WWII just to get the Navy and Marine Corps Medal in 1946 when some sailors got caught in a dangerous tide
Me and a buddy were asking about the soldiers medal, if your in the reserves and you save someone’s life while off duty could you still receive the medal? How does you chain of command know about the incident?
If your ' off duty' and do something to earn it ,(not related to your civilian job) yes, you can be put in for it. Example was in the early 1990's two (2) Sailors, living off post, was awarded the Navy version for letting folks in their apartment building know the building was on fire, story was in local news media and naval publications.
Why did JFK receive an award that was designed for heroism, not against an armed foe? His award should be upgraded. His actions were against an enemy during WWII.
