Kill the damn music when you're narrating, would you please? It's goddamn distracting!!
I just heard that my friend passed away, he was a silver star recipient in Vietnam. We talked about his award one night at the VFW. His daughters are my cousins, they're probably going to find his medals and read what he did. Told me he didn't really want them knowing that about his actions that day. Sometimes a small medal can weigh a lot more than you'd think.
Wanna bunch of ribbons then join the Air Farce. They have ribbons just for showing up to physical training.
Do you just not know how to shut the music off so we can hear you when youre talking? Or, do you prefer not being heard clearly even with the TV volume on max?
@@smokejaguarsix7757 got it, thanks for the feedback!
WTF? What are the Fire Guards going to get?
I and everyone in my unit, an Army National Guard unit, received the NDM, in 1991, even though we never went to the Middle East.
In the 1990s, i served in the 31st (AL ARNG) and 81st (USAR) what are the odds, they both fought in the PTO.
They took it away again?
Got one for the first Gulf War. Even though by the time we got our uniforms on the war was finished. Iraq scrambled out of Kuwait back to Iraq. 😅
Turn the music off.
The oxygen medal in my time . 😂
The Gedunk Medal Is Gone??? WOW!
Yet we remain at DEFCON3,
Navy 65 to 69. We called it the "alive in 65" medal. A participation medal, in essence, and like the gentleman below if I had not had my expert pistol medal I too would have been questioned.😎
Joined navy 8 July 1975 right after graduating high school in June . They stopped awarding the Vietnam Era National Defense medal a few months earlier . I was Very glad I got an expert pistol medal as many had nothing on the uniform and other people accused you of forgetting to put on your ribbons ……
1976 - NDSM (USAF) : "The Battle of Lackland"
I got mine at Fort Ord in 1968. We all knew it was just an award to make us feel special for doning nothing...kinda like the bull shit awards they give kids for just showing up to baseball practice......Vietnam 1970 and 1971.....
Watching and learning about my dads medals, thank you for the wonderful video !
You’re welcome, glad you enjoyed it!
I graduated USMC boot camp in September 1990, and was not authorized. I received the NDSM in May of 1991 after I was deployed in support of Operation Desert Shield/Storm. Received subsequent awards in 2009, and 2014 for OIF and OEF. As it was told to me in 90s, the NDSM was only issued during wartime service.
Good point, thanks for sharing.
I'm a tripple winner.
The music is too much. Maybe turn it down in the background. Too distracting when attempting to MAYBE learn something. But I couldn't watch
ok will do, thanks for the feedback.
Thanks for doing this.
My pleasure!
Seems you are wearing a 33rd Degree Masonic ring? And a Breitlking watch? Am I correct?
not the ring, but good eye on the watch, had it since 1968.
I called it the "I showed up" award; because that's what it took to 'earn' it.
I tell people I got it after graduation from basic training
Interesting
I received my “Fire Watch” medal on Parris Island 1971.
Got mine on P.I. in 1969. Semper Fi.
My first medal was the army service medal
Thank you so much for this. I'll show this to my wife. I was awarded my NAM by then RADM Boorda when he was ComDesRon10 in 1988 or 89. I knew it was a bit of a deal when I got it because a lot of other guys were quite mad that a then bootcamper got his before they ever did, if they ever did. Not all did. Um, mine was granted for a single action. I was kinda new, so I didn't know all this info.
I do laugh when I think of all the boots after the cutoff who showed up at their units where everyone else has one.
You do a great job. Thank you
You bet! Glad you liked it.
I got Mine, Panama, Grenada, and Persian Gulf.
Thank you for the information. A question , I was deployed 4 times to the ME (OIF & OEF) I was awarded the GWOT and the GWOTE medals. What are the criteria for adding the stars to them?
My Father fought in Vietnam in the 1st Calvary and then the 11th Armored Calvary Regiment. I never thought the Unit Citations were that big a deal, but I don't think everyone has a VUA/PUC to go along with their Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm.
I have to get a decorative box for all of my Dad's accolades from Vietnam. He "only" was overseas for a year, but because that's twice as long as he was required, he was in the 1st Calvary and 11th Infantry Armored Calvary Regiment. He obtained two great Unit Medals (PUC and VUA), and individually, he was awarded an ARCOM as well as a Purple Heart. However, his saying is, "I paid for it in blood," and he doesn't care. I feel he isn't completely telling the truth, though, because he has quite a few hats with the 11th Infantry "Black Horse" emblem.
I served in the USMC from 81 - 85, we didn’t get the fire watch medal??
Excellent new information. Does anyone know the significance of the battle cry 'Geronimo' when you bail out?
This is kind of crazy I served Vietnam and Germany and I only got one National Defense of Maryland I don't know what all these people getting one for each war zone I've never heard of that
Thank you, my grandfather did not receive his, I am just learning about this and I appreciate you sharing information
I am glad that you found this information useful.
The National Defense Service Medal was the first medal I was issued. The 2nd was my Good Conduct Medal. Nothing for serving in Germany during the Cold War in 1970-71.
Ditto for service in the UK
My dad served with the 30th ID . He was with the 117th IR, 3rd Btn, Co M. Fought through all 5 campaigns. He never liked to talk about the war, and got through it unscathed. It's a real shame that the army records were destroyed in a fire.
This award is no longer authorized yet troops in SYRIA are receiving CABs... Hello..
I got one after basics in the USCG. They gave them to everyone. We called it the ''gedunk medal.'' That means it was handed out like donuts at the closet sized exchange most small CG stations or ships had. If you lost the medal you could buy a new one for $1.25 and another 25 cents for a coffee and donut.
Yup, earned two of these but you certainly went into great detail about the history of the medal. Sadly, it’ll be reactivated within the next ten years.
What unit the Rangers in war world Attached , and serve with 1 Aromor in Germany and the 9th infantry ,how would find out what metals to put a plague
Did anyone ever refuse to wear theirs on their uniform?
That’s one of the medals they gave out ‘like candy’ my Father said from his involvement in Vietnam. Along with the Good Conduct Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Combat Medal and Vietnamese Gallantry Cross (unit citation) w/Palm.
My father received both a PUC and VUA in the Vietnam War. He makes it seem like it’s nothing. From my understanding this wasn’t nothing however. All of those for being in the 11th Infantry during his second half overseas during 1970. I had to go out of my way to get his physical medals (not uniform medals) as he didn’t care to ever get them. However, I couldn’t get a copy of his Purple Hearts for whatever reason (on his uniform medals with 1 Star). His highest medal he received was an ARCOM for his personal actions during Operation Fish Hook. I have to second guess if his unit citations and ARCOM were a big deal because anytime I’ve asked he has told me “ah, I don’t know or care, I was just doing what I had to do”.
I’m a bit confused. My Father served overseas from Summer of 1969-Summer of 1970 in the 1st Calvary and the 11th Infantry ACR. I didn’t see either the yellow/black horse or the red/black horse patches. He received the PUC and VUA during his 2nd half there in the 11th, so I must have missed something in the video.
Good lord, a Fire Watch Medal.... we all were issued one in boot camp in the early 70s!
Ha we called it the cnn ribbon
Ge-Dunk ribbon.
Pizza stain too lol
I'm retired Parachute Regiment, and I did the US jumps at Fort Bragg (1982), also jumps in Belgium (1979) and France (1985). The French wings have to be the largest set of wings out there, but I only wore the cloth US wings on my smock. The British Army has to Pass "P Company" or the Commando course (Royal Marines and attachments) before they can even qualify to go on the parachute course; both courses have a significant failure rate.
Hereford?
@@carldowd406 That kinda goes without saying!
@@canadian_investor7979 but Hereford don't go through P company do they but they are in the same British Army, as same as SPAG do not go through Commando training and they are part of the Royal Navy? Just an observation 🪂🪂
@@carldowd406@carldowd406 That's what I meant; if you pass selection, what would the point of doing P Company.
@@canadian_investor7979 well let me say this to you CI, what if I said to you that the best prepared students for Parachuting came from two particular units one being DEPOT PARA and that there are two courses that DO NOT prepare students in any way shape or form, for parachute training? Think back to your whole training programme and P company, down to the small detail of how you start each height related exercise...
