I managed to keep out of trouble for 10 years and have 3 GCM’s and my brother who served 3 years on Active Duty and 12 on Active Reserve only received 1, but he went to Granada with the 82nd and got his CIB. Our Dad, retired MSG, did 21 years and received 7 GCM’s. The eldest of my two sisters was in the Air Force for 8 years and received 2 USAF CGM’s.

There was a time after Vietnam when most service members were bare chested. During my first formation in officer basic my tact officer informed me that I was not authorized to wear ROTC ribbons on active duty. I had to educate the LT that the Good Conduct and National Defense were real Army awards. I have always been proud of my GCM and the knowledge that this is one medal officers will not be awarded.

I got my good cookie. I knew a guy who managed to get his GCM by 3 days. If he had been NJPd 3 days sooner, he wouldn't have gotten that award. (I was marines not army)

Does it have to be 1 year consecutive and the same operation? I am on my 2nd Combat deployment as a Guardsman (OEF/OFS and OIR) am I eligible for the Army Good Conduct Medal when combining the overall time served in a combat zone especially because the deployments are part of GWOT?
