    I'm 85. I adored these guys and still do. AMAZING!!!! Imagine a young Mel Torme swinging with the greats of the Benny Goodman era.

      GLENN . . .I AGREE 100% WITH YOU. THERE WAS NOTHING LIKE THIS ERA IN MY LIFETIME AND I'M 76. LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS COUNTRY, MUSIC HAS GONE WAY DOWN TO THE GUTTER. SAD, SAD, SAD.

      @@ChannelMaster720 I agree totally: THIS WAS THE GOLDEN ERA for big bands and amazing talent. the "big music biz" has gone straight down hill since then and especially since the late 60's on. Jazz, Swing, and Big Bands were THE TOP of American musical talent. no doubt about it. Includes, of course, Sinatra and Mel Torme.

      I saw Mel in Hobart Tasmania in '73....it was magical....he brought Butch Miles & rehearsed an Aussie band for 2 weeks.....the room held 300 for dinner.....it still sends chills up my spine when I think of his musicality & gr8 stage presence....I believe that I have seen the 'perfect' music performance.....he finished with a kick-arse encore of Roue 66....phew......I was a working rock & funk player then...and he changed my musical life......I left the gig and walked home in a daze....before realising that I'd left my car in the casino car park!!!!!.....I'm 71......

      Yes I know, he thoroughly enjoys every second, and there’s not a smidgeon of arrogance anywhere in his body. God bless him.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. Drummers belong in the background. That's what drums are and what they should be. A good drummer knows and respects that. Ringo knew that to stellar results. 99.9% of good drummers play solidly in the background. Gene can do what he does because he's Gene. If you really really loved Tiny Tim, you might be tempted to say "everyone should perform like Tiny Tim," but they shouldn't. Drummers that perform with enthusiasm can usually be recognized as copying Gene. I am a Krupa guy 100%, and I copy my style from Gene. I get comments similar to yours on my gigs...you look you're having a great time, you play with so much joy, etc, but really, it's all an act. What Gene does is an act. He's copying some older New Orleans drummers and he just has the schitck perfected and therefore it's so great, but the act falls flat for many other drummers that can't quite pull it off, it comes across as corny. Gene is Gene, other drummers aren't, and that's ok.

    Louie bellson with the double bass drums. This guy was as good as you can get . Because of them I became a drummer .

    Buddy was the greatest of all time, but nobody could match Gene's rhythm. With all the great drummers I've heard play Sing, Sing, Sing, nobody could quite capture Gene's swing. Like Jeff Porcaro's "Rosanna", nobody quite captures the ghost noting. Love 'em all.

    • @TheLarryBrown
      @TheLarryBrown ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll take Gene over Rich a thousand to nothing, starting with the fact that Gene is a nice guy. Gene does many things amazingly well. You might cover much of what he does so well under the catch phrase of "swing," but he does so much creative variety. The freezes, the surprises, the stutters, the creative use of non-drum surfaces like the hi-hat stand, the bottom hat, stick on stick, stick on bass drum, cowbell and woodblock, that zany splash cymbal, stuffing the sticks into the heads, stick on the back of the stick, how he varies each musical section so that his groove is always evolving on a given song, those surprise and delightful blistering wails, the varied sticking (as used to such great effect on Sing Sing Sing and still heard copied to this day), the single stroke rolls, playing in unison with the soloist (done under Benny Goodman's solo on Sing Sing Sing and very cool), the foreshadowing of themes (which you won't notice except on repeated listening, also used under Goodman's solo), and on and on. And all that's BEFORE you even mention the haireography.
