    During the last minute or 2 of Sing Sing Sing, the connection between Lionel and Gene are magical. Gene captures the epitome of the pure jazz and no one....I mean no one ever came even close. FYI... Buddy Rich plays in a hectic jammed up concentrated roar that gives even the most seasoned drummer very little time to process. Buddy can’t touch Gene !! Even at 62, his final minute during Sing Sing Sing was and is beyond words. He’s The Godfather of drums....my mentor and inspiration for everything I do on the skins !!!! Can’t imagine how boring of a drummer most of us would have become without Gene in this World. RIP !!!

      "Buddy can't touch Gene?" I am learning to appreciate Gene more, but shaking your head and waving your arms around isn't all there is to drumming. Buddy's technique was unsurpassed and went over many peoples' heads, including "seasoned" drummers. People hear with their eyes. and Krupa was very flashy, but not nearly the technician that Buddy was. - A "seasoned" drummer..."

    It is not possible to have a greater small piece combo then what the goodman quartet was. Wow, everyone was the absolute master of their chosen specialty. Gene was the man.

    Met Gene Krupa when he was playing at the Blue Note in downtown Chicago when I was a teenager in March & October of 1957. He was a great guy, and in October he asked what happened to the redhead I was with in March. I was now with a blonde. And I didn't think he remembered me. What a memory. As I was a young drummer, at that time, he was my musical hero!!

      I saw Dr John in Melbourne; they'd saddled him with 3 rock musos who didn't understand his music, and a small electric excuse for a piano on an ironing board! It's the musicians disrespected.

      Obviously, whoever was in charge knew how to mic an upright piano. Also, it helped that he had help from Lionel. It wasn't like the Oscar Peterson concert I attended, where Oscar had to carry the entire concert by himself, playing his Bosendorfer Imperial Grand with extra bass notes.

      Unlike a horn player or even a drummer, you can't just pack a Baby Grand on an airplane. Pianists tend to play what is there. Whoever tuned and mic'd this one knew what they were doing at least.

  • @1963dodgeboy
    @1963dodgeboy 9 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    There may have been better drummers, such as Buddy Rich, but there was no better showman with the sticks than Gene Krupa, he put drummers on the map.

    • @alancobain2151
      @alancobain2151 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      YOU GOT IT RIGHT, DODGEBOY, HE WAS A SHOWMAN AND HE GOT A LOT OF HIS LICKS FROM THE GREAT BLACK DRUMMERS WHO PRECEDED HIM, FOR EXAMPLE CHICK WEBB, AND BIG SID CATLETT, AND OTHERS, LETS GIVE CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE.

    • @alancobain2151
      @alancobain2151 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      p.s. I could name at least 15 drummers who were better than gene, but because of the color of their skin, and the fact that they didn't have movie star looks, did not receive the recognition that gene did, he knew how to milk the crowd, as they say.

    • @Scrayfish0
      @Scrayfish0 9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      alan cobain
      All musicians have their debts in terms of influences and Gene openly acknowledged his...but he didn't steal anything. Any real musician could identify Gene's sound and ideas. He was no slouch.

      alan cobain chick webb the 1940's dwarf drummer is my altime greatestfavorite.they had to bolt down his drumset which he invented[the modern drumset configuration] so a pioneer and ella fitzgerald[16-17yrs old] fronted his band at the savory ballroom chick was the house band and battled benny goodman and won. kruppa later said ''chick cut us up''. each band had same arrangement. he and his long time wife adopted the teenage ella fitzgeral.....so i love his manhood as well as his musicship.youtub ''battle of the bands savoy ballroom,chick vs benny'' and watch,see which of the 2 great win, plus the lindy hoppers like frankie manning and.....??
