Hi Adam, it was a good call in the end mate, you were only putting yourself and the dog in danger had you stayed. I have been in a similar situation where we were dropped off late after trying to find a camping spot in the dark we had to set the tent up. It was one that my mate had brought and neither he or I had an Idea on how it was meant to be set up. We were also being bitten alive by midges. We eventually managed to construct some kind of shelter at two in the morning. Next day we discovered that we'd brought far too much gear and that it was going to be impossible to make the planned journey to Easedale tarn. We thought about trying to find another place to pitch our tents but were told to move. The land owners let the cattle out and they had calves and were very aggressive. We were trapped and had to wait until all the cattle had moved before asking a foreign gentleman to help us with our gear. We couldn't find a cheap B&B either. I was exhausted by this point. We took a bus to Windemere and ended up sleeping in the train station. We made a call and we were told that they'd pick us up later that morning. I was glad when they arrived. I will never go to Easedale tarn again unless I have the lightest gear with me. The people there are not very welcoming we discovered. A big Lesson learned I can tell you.
Back in a day in USSR we used only canvas tents. As a young boyscouts we always prayed for rain not to come for two reasons. Tent would always leak and after it was a pig to carry it, very very heavy when soaked. We were living behind ‘iron curtain’ 30 years ago and were jealous when for first time saw a guesting foreign boyscout with his ultra light tent. We used to survive heavy storms by choosing right spot, digging around the tent trench water to escape and covering tent with transparent polythene sheets. Thanks for a video. I wanted to share my mistake happened in Peak District going up to Kinder Downfalls and looking for Kinder Gates. It was evening, getting dark, unfamiliar area. I was prepared, clothing, tent, stove, food, map, watch compass, torch with spare batteries, walking poles. Around 8pm got completely dark, I was about a mile away from Downfalls. It was good going no stress walk till mist came down. It fuc**ed thing up completely. After a while of careful walking I reached Kinder downfalls but could not see anything, just hear some water falling. I felt it’s not a good idea to move in direction of that noise :) 500 metres away was my destination Kinder Gates what took me probably an hour to find. Following as I felt non existing muddy path along the tiny shallow river, getting lost in bogs couple of times made my day. I saw some head torch and further on two lads in a tent pointed me towards the path I needed. In next 5 minutes I was lost in a mist again walking/climbing through bogs. I was ashamed to shout and ask for a direction but those lads saved me again by shining torch. I got back to them, figured it all out again and after another 500 metres I found the place. Those 500m were some experience I never want to do again. Of course I didn’t know I’m in a right place as I could see only 1.5meters ahead so bad was the mist. Next day morning I run to Kinder downfalls and back in less than 10 minutes. It’s amazing how dark and mist can change the visibility and whole hike.
Someone else did say when they were in the army they were instructed to dig a trench around their canvas tent. New technology eh it's come on a long way. I still think the canvas looks pretty cool though and I'll just take it out in future on a nice dry forecast. Thanks for the very interesting story and it just goes to show that you never know what can happen even on the best planned trips! 👌

That's the thing though, hindsight is 20/20, and as long as we learn from mistakes then all the better. All that aside, was a good video, I personally like getting out in the rough weather, as being in a shelter when the weather is crap is one of my favorite things to do, just a shame that evens conspired against you on this one, the canvas tent was stirring up some memories of being in the scouts many years ago. Live to camp another day, looking forward to the next one :)
I know what you mean mate this video is my tribute to "things you shouldn't do" 😂 It was a combo of panicking about losing sunlight and not having poles that mainly did it. I'm the same I like a bit of rain when I'm in the tent but this was a little too much rain ha!

Fair play for attempting a camp in conditions like that. Who cares if you didn't summit Everest, very few even make it to the foothills. I could smell disaster when you set up next to the river, but some brilliant decisions and weighing up all the odds to get out alive though, it could've ended a lot worse!

I felt cold and wet and home watching that video. Like camping in a lake. Lol. Dig a little trench around the tent next time to help filter the water around the then and not through it
😅 it was cosy for an hour until it came inside lol. Good idea with the trench but I've got a feeling that whole bank was close to being covered later on
Never ever camp near a moving stream/river especially in conditions that you experienced. The sudden swell of that water could have completely overwhelmed you and trapped you .please always think of your safety.
Had you tested any of that gear in heavy rain before? Water coming through that groundsheet wtf lol. I've had my lavuu out in 48hr long Amber rain storms and it's remained dry as a bone on the inside canvas. But I spend a week wetting it and drying it wetting it and drying it. Repeat over and over. They don't need any waterproofing at all as long as you wet them out first.
The lavvu hasn't seen a huge amount of rain I'm hoping this will waterproof it a bit more now 👍 with the ground it was more that the water was rising underneath
Fabulous review of different locations, maybe not the best final choice for the conditions but makes for great viewing. You can’t beat forgetting a key piece of equipment 🤣🤣 but you handled it well, never give up attitude but sensible decision. Love the dog btw
Have you let this soak through like this and dry out several times to tighten the weave of the canvas. That's how it can be waterproofed, providing nobody has fabsil treated it before the natural way is the best.

Mate experience is everything and that’s how you get it like you said nothing wrong with knowing when your done. Pushing yourself is risky but that’s why we do it.

Reminds me of the time I woke up to find a stream not only running through my tent, but through my sleeping bag too from head to foot. Admit it though, it's the wee disasters that make for the most memorable trips out.
Unlucky I have 2 lavvu and neither leaks, right decision to bail out and go home before it got worse. Like the video though so I've subscribed to your channel 👍

Its always easy in hindsight but not in reality....You had to escape simple as and the dog is lower to the ground than you Mate....If I can make a suggestion pop a couple 10 quid SOL EMERGENCY BLANKETS in the bottom of your rucksack just in case you should be in that situation again....Wrap one around yourself and tuck the dog in with you and once war and semi dry you can think much clearer....Glad you both got out safely ....
Yup, I've made mistakes kayaking and uploaded them. It's good to be honest and show them. Although to be honest I'd never have pitched so close to the river in such torrential rain 😬 Keep up the good work 👍😁

@@MrWildWales could have gone a lot worse. I've been down in Dartmoor this weekend. So much standing water. We stayed next to a small brook which nearly flooded but we had a dry night in the tents. Keep the videos coming. Awesome work.

Think id have been a bit para camping that close to the river with all that rain 😂😂 Great to see the BCB stove being used too, absolutely love that thing!! Good job you had the tarp but seemed like the conditions were just too bad lol. Cant believe how much ground rising water there was and all the water coming in the end! It makes me realize how good our lightweight oiled Egyptian cotton material was back in the late 40-50s with 9 days constant rain in the Lake District.
Bet you wont forget your poles again? At least no shortage of water for filtering, and I thought my last wild camp was bad pitching in a peat bog, mind you you have a makeshift raft (cot) to sail home on
Easy to make mistakes...hindsight is a great thing and on a positive note you had plenty o water for a brew,got out in one piece and learnt a bit...everyday is a school day 😉

Fair play mate, theres no such thing as a failed camp, you learned a good bit from that, i assume. I will give you a little tip mate that used to be taught in the military when pitching tents or shelters that don't have a ground sheet. Dig a little trench the whole way around your tent or shelter just below where it meets the ground, then dig the trench in a direction away from your tent so the water runs down your tent, drips off the tent into the trench and flows down that trench and away from you. Doesn't have to be deep, only a few inches but if its going to chuck it down youll want to dig it a little deeper. Hope this makes sense mate 👍
Top tip that could help the flow of water on camps from your tent 👌 I think the bank was a bit far gone this time though but I'll keep it in mind for next time

At the time it hadn't been used for the night. I bought a larger one since and it seems a lot more waterproof it's strange

I felt your pain watching this. Reminds me of the time I woke up to find a stream
not only running through my tent, but through my sleeping bag too from head to foot.
Admit it though, it's the wee disasters that make for the most memorable trips out.
You've got to take the rough with the smooth it sounds like you had it even more rough than me. Like you say those are the memorable trips though

Its always easy in hindsight but not in reality....You had to escape simple as and the dog is lower to the ground than you Mate....If I can make a suggestion pop a couple 10 quid SOL EMERGENCY BLANKETS in the bottom of your rucksack just in case you should be in that situation again....Wrap one around yourself and tuck the dog in with you and once war and semi dry you can think much clearer....Glad you both got out safely ....
I was warm in that tent but like you say defo better to evacuate in that situation.

@@MrWildWales could have gone a lot worse. I've been down in Dartmoor this weekend. So much standing water. We stayed next to a small brook which nearly flooded but we had a dry night in the tents. Keep the videos coming. Awesome work.

'Rain rain go away' so sings Johnny Tillotson, did not happen for you & yep too close to a raging creek & your gonna get soaking.?? Silly or not ya gotta go to the top of the hill & put your tarp over yourselves(2) Quite a cool video & having a washing resource in your porch is unique. I have no doubt that you will survive & maybe next time pick a mountain side & stay away from creeks big /small. Cheers

It makes me realize how good our lightweight oiled Egyptian cotton material was back in the late 40-50s with 9 days constant rain in the Lake District.

Bet you wont forget your poles again? At least no shortage of water for filtering, and I thought my last wild camp was bad pitching in a peat bog, mind you you have a makeshift raft (cot) to sail home on

Fair play mate, theres no such thing as a failed camp, you learned a good bit from that, i assume. I will give you a little tip mate that used to be taught in the military when pitching tents or shelters that don't have a ground sheet. Dig a little trench the whole way around your tent or shelter just below where it meets the ground, then dig the trench in a direction away from your tent so the water runs down your tent, drips off the tent into the trench and flows down that trench and away from you. Doesn't have to be deep, only a few inches but if its going to chuck it down youll want to dig it a little deeper. Hope this makes sense mate 👍
Top tip that could help the flow of water on camps from your tent 👌 I think the bank was a bit far gone this time though but I'll keep it in mind for next time
