"The very famous..." (I dig this pause) "... Prodrive!" "It weighs about as much as a human hair, it goes like one too!" Hell yeah! "Relative speed..." Brilliant expression from Jeremy! This car is stunning~ What a shame it won't go into production :(
This thing looks like early models of the Cadillac CTS-V (~2010?) sedan from the front. It's got those parallelogram headlights, standard mesh grid grill, and similar proportions on the entire front end. On a completely different note, that sound when you ;et off the throttle is fucking amazing! Really wish that with all the turbo-ing going on in the car industry these days that more manufacturers would do something fun like this to their turbo spool discharge/release noise. I guess it would be an expensive thing to develop for what would inevitably an annoyance to most people, and therefore not very good return on the investment.
Am I the only one that looks at this and sees an Audi R8 that's had the nose and tail smooshed in? Or rather, when looking at the R8, seeing a P2 that's had the roof smooshed down so that the whole car's splayed out?
The R8's design 'leans forward' a lot and I severely dislike it as a result. This P2 here looks far more balanced, even with all the weird air scoops. But there's some similarity, yeah.
@jfroskate02 anti-lag are the small explosions/bangs you hear when he lets of the gas. They are ment to keep the turbo spinning and thus keep the boost pressure up even when no throttle is being applied. Basicly all rally cars are equiped with this but since the wear on the turbo is immense no production cars usualy have it.
Sad they completely skipped over/derided the technical aspects of the car, which was the reason Prodrive lent them the P2 in the first place. The boss vowed to never lend them another car after this.
It's an entertainment show, explaining the technical aspect anymore than he did (saying it has anti-lag and a clever diff) would just be boring for most viewers.
Well would you rather listen to an engineer ramble on or would you rather watch JC do a practical test to prove it works and demonstrate the prowess of the car?
@casseebest actually anti lag work by making the fuel mix richer and sending it through the exhaust where it ignites on contact with the hot exhaust pipes, which then goes to the turbo keeping its RPM in a usable range to create no lag.
Of all the years that Jeremy Claarkson has been driving turbocharged cars and still insists that the surging "squirrel sound" from the compressor wheel is the "waste gate", couldn't be more wrong. It is the blow off valve, the waste gate is to control your boost pressure. I have heard him refer to "waste gate" too many times in previous episodes.
That is the best use of a turbo yet, not dumping all the built up boost in one go!! I'm glad some is making use of the available technology, we have had this stuff ( gyro sensors, roll, pitch & yaw sensors, accelerometers..... etc etc....) for many years in aircraft, it's time to put it into our autos!!!
Fun fact: Ford actually started as a racing company, sort of. Henry Ford tried to establish another auto firm before the Ford Motor Co. we have today. In an overly simplified summary, Ford entered the 1901 “Sweepstakes” and beat the well established Alexander Winton. The publicity this victory brought convinced investors to completely back and support Henry’s second attempt at a car firm, which would become the modern Ford Motor Co.
Anti-lag - Basically when the turbo is off boost, because the engines at low RPM, the ECU allows car to run rich, causing fuel to ignite in the exhaust manifold. This keeps the turbo spinning even at low revs. ATD is basically Active Yaw Control which is also found in Evos and that noise isn't the wastegate, it's compressor surge and it's bad for your turbo.
That is one of the coolest, most amazing cars in history. Imagine how amazing would it be to own a P2 with a EXE-TC safari suspension! Perfect car for Baja!
Why didn't they bring this amazing machine to production?! It's incredible! I read an article that claimed it "wasn't pretty", maybe not, but it looks really cool. Well, everything but the grill looks really cool.
What that's not anti lag...Anti lag is where you adjust the ignition timing and keep the turbos spooled at low speed (like around corners or from a dig) so you can engage it when you need the power either off the line, in a rolling race or to regain speed coming out of a corner.
@caio20v its a dose basically no blow off valve when you lift of the throttle the air hits a wall goes back wards spins the turbo the other way and make that sound. it's know technically as a compression surge.
I can't believe Clarkson is making that mistake. Thats not the wastegate making that noise, thats a myth. It's actually called Compressor surge, and it's when the throttle is closed on boost, the charge pushes back through the compressor turbine and makes that noise as it slows the compressor. Wastegate flutter only occurs in partial throttle situations, where the throttle position keeps the boost in the wastegate's spring range, so it opens and closes rapidly.
@MeeGra123 "Break" refers to the horsepower at the breaks. It's one of the 3 most commons ways to measure power. The other two beeing Rhp and kw. The reason why you have bhp and rhp is that you "loose" some horsepower in the energy transfere frm the engine, to the actuall wheels. So that's why (if Im not mistaken) rhp is what your engine produces and bhp is what your car actually does on the road. Hope it helps x)
Break is when they test the engine on a stand and apply a braking force to it. The alternative is wheel horsepower which is measured at the axle, or more commonly at the wheels. This is with the engine in the car with all drivetrain components sapping some power. Edit: i just saw this was from 11 years ago. I hope you have a bit more knowledge now ;)
Anti-lag drops a droplet of petrol into the turbo which keeps the turbo spinning through let's say gear changes or deceleration so there is never any lag from the turbo. The downside is that the system costs a lot and ruins the turbo.
@jfroskate02 What Buffynajtor is correct. Any car where constant boost is wanted, 2 step launch control is there. Plus im pretty sure Porsches use Sequential turbo systems don't they?
@MrMrShobear I was wondering if this has a WRX chassis underneath? I mean it would save a lot to use that chassis that u can just use the same engine. The only cost would be making brand new panels and interior fittings. Still cost a lot. My point is why Subaru never made such a thing but Prodrive which only mods WRX for races does. Strange world this is.
I'm very familiar with Anti-Lag.. But once in a while top gear will put a basic car out with Carkson or the Stig on a track a without Anti-Lag installed and flames would shoot out the back like a butane lighter!!
It has 345bhp out of that subaru engine, i know for a fact that some of these engines can produce 500+, and with 345bhp its producing 0-62 in 3.8 seconds, this car will be crazy!
@Gigdoat TH-cam uses a different tracker for 300+ views. So new videos will usually see a view count cap at around 300. Then the other system will update the true viewcount later.
@gmanrofl um yes i do. im pretty sure im herring a whhhhoooochhhh sound after he shifts and i have heard real bovs in real life, they dont sound like that, thats what turbo surge sounds like. it seems to be that its not venting enough and making slight surge as a result. i didnt mean non exesting quite so literaly really what i meant is that its not working very well.
The Prodrive P2 weighs around 2400 lbs. with 350hp and 425tq, not to mention having anti lag and diff system. So no it wouldnt be the same. p2 is a whole nother monster.
I have actually been to the pro-drive factory and got a chance to sit in this car. it's actually very boring to look at. bare insides, just grey fabric, great technology though and the representative who showed us around really didn't like Jeremy either lol. the engineers were very cool though, showed us some of the stuff they're working on like Chris meekes wrc mini :D also the Aston martin lagonda's. also I got to sit in the legendary WRC championship winning Subaru Impreza that was driven by Colin McRea. great factory.
@gmanrofl people have no idea. compressor surge is ridiculous. do people honestly think you can completely reverse a turbo compressor wheel just by releasing the throttle? maybe if you were running 300 psi
for anyone who wants to know, i'm pretty sure anti-lag retards the timing so that at idle it barely runs, and the unburnt fmes still run the turbo creating boost at idle, and when the rpms is increased the retarded ignintion is taken off and burns normally, thats why when you go form low to high revs it shoots out a fire ball, i'd be happy for someone to tell me different, i dont know everything, just a vague outline
@TheFenerli10 I point at the Nissan GT-R (Starting at approx £53k), Nissan Micra, Golf GTI, Mitubishi Evo 10, Toyota Aygo, VW Fox. The lastest ford Fiesta, Renault Twingo.. Clio.. There is absolutely some R8 influence here. I like it.
That was the first thing I thought of too. A 3/4 R8. I like it too 👌
The R8's design 'leans forward' a lot and I severely dislike it as a result. This P2 here looks far more balanced, even with all the weird air scoops. But there's some similarity, yeah.

The ATD explanation was actually pretty simple to understand...sounded like AYC on an EVO.
Anti-lag - Basically when the turbo is off boost, because the engines at low RPM, the ECU allows car to run rich, causing fuel to ignite in the exhaust manifold. This keeps the turbo spinning even at low revs.

Its a shame it didnt get in production. It was an amazing piece of enginiering
3:25 looked like Jeremy was talking to James's younger brother or something.
Good thing to know the stig is compatible with the P2's computer :)
@caio20v its a dose basically no blow off valve when you lift of the throttle the air hits a wall goes back wards spins the turbo the other way and make that sound. it's know technically as a compression surge.
@iThoughtOfaUsername turbo lag is where the turbo is spooking up enough to be effective..so an als system is one that minimizes that lag time
If Prodrive plans to put the P2 in production, let's hope there's a sick bag as standard equipment. It's circles around so fast and tight!
That’s what she said.
