In tonight's video we finally address an issue that causes problems on all 5.3 engines which is dod or displacement on demand. In this video I show you how to disable or delete this from the computer so it no longer actives. There are several methods to do this and this is my favorite option. Do this at your own risk. I show you in this video how to delete dod or afm (active fuel management) using HP Tuners. Once you license the vehicle you have the ability down the road to make other changes as well. Lifter failure is very common on the 5.3. While this doesn't remove the lifters that generally fail it helps by not allowing them to engage or disengage. I also listed the parts needed to delete mechanically.

I know I'm a couple of years behind on your Suburban series...but I did the HP tuner delete for AFM/DOD back in 2016 on my Tahoe at about 85-95K miles. I am now at 233K miles and it's going strong. Once you keep those lifters from being collapsed and expanded, the locking pins pretty much keep them locked open to function as a regular lifter.

I bought a AFM disabler from Amazon $79 & plugged it in. Instantly eliminates 4 cylinder mode. I was getting shudder on deceleration when tran was downshifting and 2nd gear was where it occurred. The only time the light is on the disabler is when the engine is running. KZI AFM DISABLER.

I ended up using the plug in version for $200 and love it. No more lag and hopefully helps me keep the Tahoe running for as long as possible

Yes! AFM delete is a must on the 2009-2013 GM vehicle’s with the DOD or AFM. First thing I did when I got my 09 Tahoe. I used a Superchips tuner to delete mine.

i agree, i have a diablo tuner, but for some reason just sfter disabling the DOD it ran different, like it was hunting for gears. it seemed to shift more than it should, i went back to the stock map because it was annoying... im sure it was user error or something

2 years We bought or 2017 Tahoe with 114k miles on it. We put 22k miles on it. I was towing a few different cargo trailers three times a month one of those was over a grade and through 100 miles of turns in the mountains. Using tow mode. Just like everyone has reported. We had the failure of the torque converter, that breaks apart and since the trans pump is right behind the converter, all the metal gets pumped through the tranny. Destroyed. Cost me 7k at the dealer. Got a warranty now though. But while at the dealer, I had them tell me what the think about the ticking noise coming from the drivers side engine. They call me back saying it’s definitely the sound of the dreaded lifter failure. Since it’s such a long process to replace the lifters and they know that if a lifter goes bad then obviously you are changing the cam too. They said 11k for a new engine. Complete garbage. I bought 3k in parts and have it apart in my garage right now. Just got to the lifter. It’s the non DOD lifter in cylinder 3. Scanner said misfiring # 3 so that checks out. But it wasn’t even a dod lifter. These engines are junk and definitely are not for the even average towing. If I was you I would sell it while you can and buy a Toyota

I don’t mind the technology of lowering the cylinders. I’m on my second Yukon XL after the 2014 model hit 350K miles without any issues of sticking lifters or rattling valve issues, again no issues. Just had the oil changed every 5 k and replaced front brake disc and pads 3 times. I also had to replace the battery.
Oil changes definitely help them from gumming up
My daily driver Escalade (2005) was tboned and totalled out and i was shocked to see a video on this because im looking for info on DOD delete and see that it was YOU who had a video on it! Long story short the truck year range im looking at is 07-09 because i think they didn't start doing ,any AFM / DOD until 2010? if that is correct? I don't really have anyone else to ask questions like this to and i trust you. Is there any kind of advice you can give me for someone who will be newer gen 6.2's (07-09) and i know lower the mileage the better but what would you say is the max milage in your opinion i should look for in these 6.2's IF the 07-09 year range is to be believed?!
I first found your channel because of your trans am, as i got one too 75k 6 speed about to sell it for 20k and use some of that money to buy an escalade to daily but along the way i have come to find that you have a vast array of videos and sooooo much knowledge i trust. If you could please give me some advice on what to aim for the max mileage you recommend i limit myself at and year wise. Picked up a 2011 Chevy Tahoe, your videos have been great help. Want to do a 2-4 went with bell tech front struts, and prob the rear springs same. Question is they say you don’t need sway bar links.. is this true or can you get away with just doing springs ?

I have a Range that I use on my 2017 Silverado 5.3. It works perfect, I have used it on my truck for over a year with no problems. When my truck will be setting for any period of time I simply unplug it from the OB2 port, no battery drain......The Range was 85.00. I have noticed no change in the MPG of my truck, if anything the MPG has imroved.........

The free option is to shift it to Manual 5. It will not go into 4 cylinder mode either.

No issues with disabling. Those lifters will eventually fail. I am sure I prolonged the life by doing this. I would almost guarantee that.

If anyone purchases a vehicle with DOD or AFM from a dealership and you program a vehicle to disable it, you will void your warranty. If you just use a disabler to plug in you are ok and won't void your warranty.

@@TWAMotorsports gotcha, i just purchased a 2015 gmc yukon denali 6.2l 8l90 transmission 86k miles. Purchased a Range disabler drove less than 20 miles and got a cylinder 6 fuel injector code. Maybe was bad before the Range was put in?

After you removed the AFM and the DOD, your vehicle will less likely have the excessive oil consumption which is pretty common

If your LS drinks oil will that stop it? I'm high mileage and haven't turned it off, but do want to do so and also change my tire size. I have an 08 GMC truck, but it does have the AFM on it.
Some say it does fix that but I haven't had that issue to tell you for sure

I physically eliminated the afm system, replaced the camshaft and the lifters and the central plate of the engine, once I started the vehicle it only works with 4 cylinders, it has missfires, my question is, are those faults present because I did something wrong or just It is a matter of reprogramming my ecu and eliminating the afm system from the ecu.

Pro is for a wideband hook up but not required for this. I do have the pro suite however

Not at all. Lifters are still in there. Seems it prolongs the life of them though

The Range AFM/DOD disable OBD2 module only lights up when the vehicle is on. I had one in my 2012 Tahoe and Have one in my new Denali. I put black tape over it other wise it does light up the floor in an annoying way while driving.

Chevy won't do this. It is up about 1 mpg since doing it.

Since I got my 07 Tahoe…. It’s always been in v8 … never switches. Which I’ve heard is what you want. I replaced the motor right at 240k miles…. And within a year of doing that I’m barely getting 200 miles per tank of gas…. I can’t find any videos. Especially videos geared towards women who don’t understand half of the lingo you men use. Helpppp lol
May just need a tune up and air filter. That would be a good place to start
