Understanding Active & Dynamic Fuel Management and The Problems They Cause (AFM vs DFM)

  • In today’s video, Jake explores the world of Active Fuel Management (AFM) and its successor, Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM). AFM and DFM are technologies developed by GM to improve fuel efficiency by deactivating select cylinders during low-load driving conditions. This reduces fuel consumption by allowing the engine to operate more efficiently when full power is not required. However, are they as good as GM makes them sound? Jake covers the differences between AFM & DFM, the problems these systems can cause, and what route is best to delete or disable Active Fuel Management (AFM) or Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM). This is your go-to video for all things AFM & DFM.

    What would have been simpler would have been if they just let the lifters work normally while shutting off fuel delivery to different cylinders as necessary. I imagine that with the valves closed while the piston is trying to induct and expel it builds pressure and forces the currently working cylinders to work harder to rotate the crankshaft thus defeating any fuel economy gain.

    The camshaft also needs to be replaced anytime the AFM or DFM lifters. Also, GM has a newer DOD - Displacement On Demand - on newer cars & trucks which has several hundred or more ways to deactivate cylinders.

    I bought a new 14 v-6 Silverado not knowing about the afm. I felt it kick in and knew it was not good for the engine. I only had to add a small amount of pedal to get it back to firing on all 6. I bought a afm delete that now prevents the afm from kicking in. It plugs into the port under the dash with no modifications. It does have a constant drain on the battery so for l/t storage just remove it. Well worth the $$$.

    • @8020Media
      @8020Media  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yepp, that's the best way to do it. If you want a device with less drain, our Boost device only pulls 0.71mA of power while turned off. Range's device pulls up to 6mA and usually sits within 2-3mA so theirs drains battery way faster than ours does.
