Goodbye Displacement on Demand - COMP Cams DOD Delete [FULL TIME V8]

  • The Comp Cams DOD delete kit removes the pesky lifters and valvetrain that allow some LS and LT engines to run on 4 of the 8 cylinders. Over time, these special lifters will fail which can potentially wipeout a camshaft and possibly kill an engine. Comp Cams delete kits come in a variety of options for all the LS and LT family of engines. We chose a complete DOD delete kit with a Stage 2 camshaft and springs for our 6.2 liter LS.

    Good idea to replace the o-ring on the oil pump pickup tube while the engine is out. LS engines notorious for that ring cracking and it causing low oil pressure at idle.

    I did a full DOD/AFM delete. Aftet dyno session #1 it feels like a monster compared to oem old cam. #2 I wish I had known about that oil relief in the pan. I had my engine hangjng off the hoist to change oil lines and some parts. Bellhousing, converter was all that was still hooked up. If I had pulled it and put it on the stand it would have been super easy to do.

    Great vid, thanks. I have 6.2L Escalade EXT, and may need to do this someday. Why did you use a hi-lift cam on a SUV vehicle? I would think a very mild cam choice would be better to retain low-end torque, which these heavier vehicles need more than high rpm horsepower.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      On the 6.2, the 600/600 lift is not that aggressive, and Comp did a good job on the grind. We didn't notice any loss on the bottom, but the mid-to-high pulls much better. You can really feel the power curve come in. Don't get me wrong, it's still a big elephant, but it's noticeable. Thanks for watching.

    • @ChevySS1968

      @@Shoptoolreviews - Thanks, I get your point... I have a supercharged Roush Mustang, and hard pulling in the mid to upper range is highly desired in a muscle car, no doubt. But I'm still not sold on the desirability of those traits in a SUV. What is the valve timing like on the Comp Cam. I'm assuming the valves open sooner and close later???? This causes loss of dynamic compression and low-end torque. Thanks again. I gotta say, I absolutely detest AFM, which is IMHO the worst concept that GM ever implemented.

    • @Shoptoolreviews
      @Shoptoolreviews  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In our 6.2, we have VLOM blocked and the DOD turned off in the ECU. The VVT still works, since we only limited the movement with Comp VVT block. You have to tune accordingly. Instead of 20+ degrees of movement, there's only like 8 degrees of movement. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.

    • @jameswiz

      @@Shoptoolreviews So I'm looking to do this cheap and sell the truck. I have the HP Tuners (tuner) so disabling the DOD shouldn't be an issue. Since the Factory VVT will still work, thats great. But my next question is, If I disable the DOD in the ECU, MUST I plug the VLOM as well, or is disabling DOD in the ECU enough? I'm not planning on replacing the lifters, cam or anything else... I just keep seeing people talk about blocking the VLOM, but I really can't find a good break down of the reason, or what is actually taking place. The only site I've seen sell a plug by itself, looks like a metal sleeve, that he pounds into the hole. I guess it blocks the DOD passages, but allows for the Pressure sender to receive oil still... What if that's not installed? And DOD is just disabled in the system? Would that work? (not to "fix" the problem, but prevent it from ever happening?
      Thanks

    Kind of new and learning the LS world. What is that unit (at 20:40) at the end of the wire harness mounted on the timing chain cover just outside the camshaft, it is held on with 3 bolts? I just bought a 2011 Avalanche and mine has that part but mine is not attached to the cover, it is only plugged in and kind of just hangs behind the water pump.

    • @wally7856
      @wally7856 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be the "cam phaser actuator solenoid". It actuates a pin that presses into the middle of the "cam phaser oil control bolt" seen at 20:09 and allows oil to enter the cam phaser to adjust timing.

    • @mikebas7325
      @mikebas7325 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@wally7856 Thanks for the reply. Any idea what that would mean if mine is just hanging on the outside of the timing cover? Not even a spot in the timing cover for it to mount. I'm assuming someone has obviously been in the motor before I bought it but just wondering if that means they may have done a DOD delete. I know there is probably no for sure answer unless taking the motor apart but figured I would try.

    • @wally7856
      @wally7856 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@mikebas7325 Sounds like they did a VVT delete by putting on a regular sprocket instead of the cam phaser and put a non-VVT timing cover on. The VVT timing cover has a hole big enough to mount that actuator that you can remove that oil control bolt at 20:14 through the hole with a socket. If that was done then I'd suspect the cam was changed out to a non-VVT cam as well. I'd guess they probably had lifters and cam take each other out and needed replacing. They probably replaced them with whatever they thought would be best to solve the problem or whatever they had on hand. Good chance they did the DOD delete at the same time. Or they just upgraded the cam to make more power and bought a non VVT cam as there are way more options for those cams then VVT cams. Either way a new cam would require a tune so I'd say you have a really good chance DoD has been disabled.
