From TRASH to TREASURE: Creating Sails from Recycled Plastic

  • We are down at Kemp Sails in Dorset, and we are trying our hand at the sewing machine this week. And even better, we are using a pretty revolutionary material, which is made from recycled plastics. Is this the future of sail cloth?

    About Us
    We are Becka and Zach, a couple who, in 2020, dreamt of sailing off into the big blue. Trouble is- we were in a pandemic, had a university degree to finish, on a student budget, only had ever sailed dingies, oh and didn’t have a boat. The dream seemed not only unrealistic but pretty insane.
    However, we worked hard, finished our degrees, worked as many hours as physically possible, saved with all our might, got experience and in March 2022 bought our very own sailboat, Teulu. Having little sailing experience and being a young couple, we have encountered a tonne of hurdles and made plenty of mistakes! but for every downfall, there has always been a reason to dust ourselves off and carry on.
    We hope you can join us as we sail around the world and keep #bloodydoingit

    Hope you enjoyed joining us at Kemp Sails this week and seeing how some measurements we took in Curacao, help a design go from data to a tangible sail, that will help transport us over miles of ocean.
    What do you think of the Dimension Polyant Clean-Tec material? Is using recycled plastics the future of sail cloth?

    • @Arnaud58
      @Arnaud58 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Let's first give it some time to show, and probably prove itself. So, we'll just "have to" stay following you two ...!👴😁😉🤭🤗
      (Forgotten to let this stick on top?👴😉)

      I don't know if it is the future of sail cloth but there is a part of me that hopes not. It seems that it is just postponing the need to dispose of plastic as I am sure the sails have a useful life. The world needs less plastic of all types. I noticed in one of your videos that you had a book on Ellen MacArthur who, as you know, was the fastest solo sailer to sail around the world in 2005. I became interested in her because of her advocacy for a Circular Economy. If there was some way to process their used sails into the raw materials to make another sail, that would be great.

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@stig2795 any sails that uses less virgin material, in our eyes, is a win. Obviously 100% recycled would be closer to a circular economy but you have to start somewhere and we feel this is a step in the right direction

    • @stig2795
      @stig2795 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @TeuluTribe Thanks for the response and I agree; I am new to sailing; had my first lessons this summer and did not realize high performance sails are made of plastic so using recycled plastic is definitely a step in the right direction. I just get a bit suspicious when I read all these sustainable sounding marketing names. According to the company that makes 'cleenTEC®'; "The term “cleen” is made up of the words clean and green and is thus intended to encompass all aspects of sustainability." Let's hope so; there is a lot of greenwashing out there.

    So much technology and gizmos in Sailmaking these days but it was good to see a needle and palm, I still have my needles wrapped up in a scrap of oily sail cloth, my trusty palm, lump of Beeswax, Fids, etc. all in my Bosuns bag. Those were great days. Lovely video glad you made it back to the boat!

    Hello to the both of you. I feel invested in you guys at this point. I hope that new material proves to be worth the effort of gettin* it to and up on the boat. This was a very cool video. Most of us have never considered how a sail is made. I know I use sail thread to fix stuff on my Jeep from time to time because it don’t come any stronger than sail thread! Much love to the both of you and fair winds!

    This summer I bought my first sailing boat which I keep moored on the river at Wareham. Great to see you guys in my neck of the woods 🙂. I've been learning to sail it and one thing I was finding is that the leech of the main sail flaps a bit when the wind gets up. If only I'd known about that leech line! So this video was both entertaining and educational, now I won't look like such a rookie with my sails flapping all over the place! 😂 Keep up the great work guys, love the videos 👍

    Hi Becka and Zach. Wow! Brilliant episode this week. Kemp Sails have done themselves a big favour, by letting you film the process of measuring; designing; cutting and making the sails for Teulu. That was an education in its own right. Well done for rolling up your sleeves and doing some of the work yourselves. Can't wait to see you back on the boat, with your new sails hoisted. Fair Winds. I grew up in Dorset so when you said you were at Kemp sails I googled them and found they are just down the road from where I lived as a teenager. I eve n did a little sailing on the river there. My parents ended up living on Poole Harbour. Of course, I lived in Wareham in 1960 so I’m sure it has changed a lot. I live in Dallas in the US now but Dorset is still what I think of as home. O

    Beautiful sail and lovely video. Furling. As you are (will be) furling your front sails and probably can operate this from the cockpit, considering your serious blue water trips, I was wondering if it were possible to furl the mainsail too. I know that the answer is yes, by the way. Then the question would be in-mast, or in-boom. In an after-market situation like yours with a fine mast that still can last years or decades, likely in-boom furling would be the easiest, cheapest, decision. But I don't know. As I cannot oversee implications, I also have no clue of what such an upgrade (?) would cost. And I don't even know if it were possible to furl a mainsail from the cockpit without expensive electric or hydraulic aids.
    But, reefing a mainsail in heavy ocean water can be quite a thing, or at least a challenging feeling - even when you're not faint of heart.
    So, have you considered such a furling option?

    • @TeuluTribe
      @TeuluTribe  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It’s definitely something we have thought about doing. However, we won’t be doing it anytime soon. It’ll be nice for down wind passages that we can now take reefs from the cockpit area 😊

The glass particles will go straight into your LUNGS. Please use your masks bc we want years of your channel. You just learned to wear protective eyewear all the time while working. Someone just needs to make a scientific discovery so that they can integrate solar cells into the sail itself, like sticking solar film onto the sail. Then your entire sail could be a solar panel.
