if you saw how many people get killed and very seriously injured youd not be using anything lithium..... also lithium dont like heat so you make sure you ventilate that battery area... ohh god i cant believe how many silly people buy stupid lithium batteries.

What a wonderful episode! Becka I'm amazed at your electrician skills, Zach your tenacity in problem solving shines thru again. It's fun to watch you guys complete these projects, you work together so well. Battleborns are the best. You guys did a great job of picking and installing that system. Stay healthy and keep those wonderful smiles going!

Im an electronics engineer, and I have to say that I'm super impressed with the care that you guys took when installing this. The wiring looks neater and better labelled than many electricians would do, and the fact that got technical help when you werent sure of something shows great self awareness. I know many fellow engineers who wouldnt take half of the care you took to get it neat and labelled correctly.
Congratulations on a job well done 👍

Watch out, Becka. Being known as a good electrician will make you lots of friends around the marina. LOTS of friends. You'll need a spreadsheet to track all the people asking you for help.
Great work. Very impressive. Not the first time I've been impressed with both of your learning curve. Cheers!

Tell me about it, I'm an IT guy by trade but I'm pretty decent at wiring up boats (done about 8 so far, including my own) and you are not wrong about needing a spreadsheet. The flipside is that any time I'm in need of some spending money I can just drop I do electrical and I'm suddenly swamped with more beer than I can drink >.>

I am an old retired engineer who has done a lot of engineering on 5 continents and lived on 3 of them, I have been responsible for thousands of people working on projects so have some idea of those who can “get things done” you two impress me with your can do and problem solving ability, your both Objective focused not Task driven that’s an important behavior as it drives success , Becka you really seem to know your way around electrical so I am assuming you must have some training in the area by the way you understand how things need to be done to do it safely.
I am enjoying following along , my wife and I lived in England for a number of years near Manchester in Alderly Edge. I really enjoyed your visit to Wales we traveled some of the same motorways while exploring.

I'm an electrical engineer of 80 metre yachts. Quite a step up, but the principles are the same. Somethings you might want to consider:
    - Draw the electrical diagrams from top to bottom. Incoming power at the top, users at the bottom. So, solar panels and shore connection at the top of the page, inverters and chargers in the middle, batteries and breaker box at the bottom. Also, try not to cross wires. This makes it easier to see what's going on.
    - Number the electrical items and cables. Something like E0001 for electrical equipment, and W0001 for cables. That way you don't have to draw everything on one giant page. You can even number the cables in correspondence with the page number. Like cables on page 1 start from W0101, W0102, etc. Cables on page page 2 start from W0201, W0202, etc. ;-)
    - Putting the wire size on the diagram is great. I was just wondering if you're using ship cable (no halogen)?
    - It's hard tell on video if your breaker box has residual-current protection. I'd definitely add residual-current circuit breakers if that's not the case.
    - I would use something like EdrawMax electrical and standard electrical symbols, but use whatever you feel comfortable with.

My friend is a university educated electrical engineer and he chose to have this exact job done by marine electricians certified for lithium installations. Fair play to you both for taking this on, but I hope you get your final instal inspected. Don’t take this the wrong way, but you have amateur installed kit powerful enough to kill you and/or burn the boat to nothing. Well done. Impressive 👍

This is an interesting video. We do this type of power installation all the time when configuring a new cellular site. Consider yourself fortunate to have a hydraulic compression tool for as many lugs as you are installing. This tool requires less effort and is smaller than the equivalent manual tool. Its great for working in a tight space like a boat. Also does a neater job. Its OK to use a match on your heat shrink. Just rotate the cable in the flame for uniform heat application. By the way, using a razor knife to strip the insulation from the power cable is quite OK, Just don't nick the copper wire as it can create premature failure. Also remember to secure your heavy power cables to prevent flex fatigue. Keep up the good work.

Standing the controllers from the bulkhead will assist in cooling for the airflow. Also if you faced any condensate drips down the bulkhead, it will keep the moisture off the controllers.
I realize there is an heat sink helping with the stand off. More airflow the better!

1992 before you were born, OMG. I started as a 16 year old apprentice in communication engineering in 1974 - a very warm summer incidentally. Where have you been :-), missed all the best music and a world that made far more sense than it does today. You are doing well for a couple of ankle biters, you still need a lead acid battery for the starter motor and to protect the alternator against disconnection which would be its down fall.

  • @antoniegill7994
    @antoniegill7994 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hey guys, just a thought. I am concerned about the combined weight of those batteries and the tie down strap. Consider screwing down a thin strip of wood before each row of batteries onto the wooden base. This strip will hold the batteries in position and the strap is then a secondary measure (redundancy is king). If you are rolling during passage or at anchor you have that extra security. More so if you are constantly heeling during passage all that weight is not against the strap.

    Lucky!
Lithium the way to go, more safety.
    New Charger yay!
Put a heat sensor in the cubby hole too.
Be careful with your insurance when buying stuff from e bay that has limited warranty or is used or the seller is not supported by the maker of the stuff,if you need to claim some insurance companies will not pay out. Another thing that is coming up is self build systems that have not been checked by a qualified electrician/ certified in boats are not covered by your insurance. I may have missed it on a past episode, has your been checked? A fire resistant board on the Victron inverter/ charger is now required. May be worth chatting to your boat insurance to clarify.

Just a small thing to add here, the battery calculating table you showed at 23:03 kinda confused my because you were using kWh and kW simultaneously, however one is a unit of power consumption and the other is a unit of energy capacity, so i quickly added the numbers and checked it myself: In theory, if you were using everything at once your total wattage would be 12.2 kW. In reality it wont make much of a difference except for when it comes to designing breaker circuits. If you calculate your breakers based on the 9 kW you assumed, you might run into issues when you have a lot of power consumption simultaneously, so e.g. Watermaker, Air Fryer, Kettle, Water Heater, Cooktop and Microwave together already comes to 8.3 kW. And in the future you might add some more high-power-consuming stuff, what could lead to problems. I also noticed that you added the 3000w inverter in the list, and to my knowledge the inverter shouldn't really use a lot of power for himself, but anyways, just wanted to add this as a quick side-note, might be worth double checking your theoretical maximum power consumption as it is what you need to decide on the amps your breakers should trigger!

Both components shut slowly down with their efficiency when they get over 40 degrees Celsius. Especially the DC/ DC Charger gets very hot. I have mounted mine on a metal panel in between the shelf and charger to have better heat distribution and never faced a downgrade in efficiency so far. 🙋🏼‍♂️

It's not for a boat, although I did put electric motors in two boats long ago. My lithium iron batts are a backup power supply for my cabin in the woods. The cells range in price. $100-150. Best bang for a Buck or Pound in my opinion. I am open to being proved wrong though.

A swollen battery is no joke. They are very dangerous. Not only do they get hot but they start off gassing Hydrogen. In an enclosed space like in a sailboat locker the gas can accumulate to the level were a hydrogen air explosion can occur. If it doesn't blow out the compartment the flash can ignite anything flammable in the location.

So happy for your luck that the hot old batteries didnt do more harm.. and what a well organized and first rate upgrade you both did.. Like a work of Art!!! And i hope you get years of good use from your hard work. 😊

Excellent, 9.6kWh is a huge bank so enable lots of power devices and even more electric cooking, so reduces the amount of gas and faff filling cylinders.
Just one comment, the Victron DC>DC chargers run hotter than the sun. Ours is mounted on the outside of the nav seat with a 3" hole behind it and we still recorded 59.9c in the UK summer. So monitor carefully once you are back in the water and use the engine. If necessary a small computer fan behind it seems to be the answer. Yes its still on our "to do" list, but will get around to it shortly.

Awesome video and demonstration of skills too. Mastering electrical installations is no easy feat - you guys smashed it 👏🏻. Just understanding all the different terms (Watts, amps, volts, current (amps) kWh, Ah etc etc) will have your science teachers feeling like they got something right!!

Heya guys, I zoomed in on the battery pack on your wiring diagram, it looks like you have the positive cable (going to the battery isolator switch) and the negative cable (going to victron smartshunt) coming off the SAME battery. If this is the case, you’re going to cause lots of problems in the long term with those expensive BattleBorn batteries. At an absolute minimum, you want to have the positive and negative coming off opposite ends of the parallel chain, but still going to have issues with unbalanced charging and discharging. Best case is to have all positives and all negatives connecting to a positive and negative busbar, with equal length cables for each run. This will give equal resistance for each battery, allowing equal charge and discharge of all 8 batteries, and setting yourself your for getting the full lifecycle out of these batteries!

We changed this shortly after 😀 so it charges and uses evenly now. All the linking cables and exactly the same length now 😀

Hats off to you both for averting potential disaster, and figuring out some pretty complex wiring on your own! As a commercial and residential electrician, I'm getting more interested in the boating side of things and still have much to learn about the technology. Some suggestions on tools, as your budget allows in the future: a compact band-saw is ideal for cutting metal, including larger-gauge wire. They cut neatly and don't throw smoke/fumes/particles. Milwaukee makes a great one (2429-20). As for cutting wood; absolutely anything but the tool Zach is using!😀. But seriously, there are very good cordless compact circular saws out there, or even a cordless jigsaw! Keep up the good work!

A good solution and some great DIY work again🎉 for a not so great problem suddenly ocurring..so lucky it started and stayed with only the smell😮..I guess all your fire alarms and emergency exits and drills are checked and done too..😊 (PS try to create some extra non electric ventilation of the battery box too..you saw that when electricity fails the batteries can still heat up)

    Ieuw that sucks.
    Glad your alright....physically.
Victron is my choise also. You need to be able to trust the electricity.
I built a lifepo4 with breaker for voltage and amp next to its BMS(JK). It gives me all the protection to feel safe.
I saw grounding issues with on acorn to Arabella and on Flying Coney with Victron. Not sure what s going on there. Something with shore power and or dynamo stray current
Electricity is a mystery by chance.
Cheers. I love all the blue.

Victron over heat. Put a bloody fan on the mppt charge controller. They can get bloody hot. Best of luck with all that gear. I know you young people like doing stuff by yourselves. But some times us old things know a thing or two. Believe it or not, we enjoy helping others make the right choices when going off grid.
