great vid... a small tip for your grab bag and in general: make LAMINATED & ELECTRONIC photo copies of all your personal documents in case of loss, theft or emergency, like passport/birth certificate/drivers license/vaccination passport/credit cards/bank cards/insurance docs.... basically any paperwork you think might be of value... takes a bit of effort to maintain the data, but its well worth it

I didn’t think then that I couldn’t actually do it because of my disability, but all these years later I remain an avid armchair sailor. I have many books of sailing adventures, and now I am following a sailing adventure on video. Thanks for bringing me along.
I could not do it, to say good bye for a long time. Wrong, I did do it. I said good bye to my parents and hopped on Pan Am Clipper to America, not to see my parents for 3 years, until I had permanent residency in America. That was 30 years ago. And I never regretted it, it was the best thing in my life. But I did miss out on a lot of family interaction, even though my twice a year visits back to Europe were really special each time. Maybe I could not do it anymore, at my age. What a great video.
Every time you say torch , we Americans are worried that you are about to burn something down. Luckily, at work , our expert for English cultural affairs explained, that that is merely referring to a flash light : ) Love that British culture aspect of your videos, so cute :)
Safe travels - bizarre though it might seem, depending on where you're going having a printer/photocopier on board might be useful - lots of places will expect lots of copies of your passports etc. etc. so being able to print them off rather than have to go and hunt it all down could be useful!
I very much agree. Something I simply did not consider early on in my own (now distant) sailing past. The amount of paperwork that goes with life on the water is astounding, and rather unexpected - at least in my own case. But yes, a printer/photocopier will be very handy if not a necessity. Everywhere you go you will be asked for "papers" and if you can give them copies instead of the originals you will save yourself a lot of potential headaches! It used to amaze me how cavalier port authorities often are with your documents, even losing them. It's always a good feeling if you can just print up a dozen (or more!) copies of all your personal documents as well as those pertaining to the boat, and put the originals in a safe place. I remember agonising about what would be the best "safe place", putting them in a plastic bag hanging near the companionway at first, and eventually deciding the grab bag might be even better.
You may not have heard about this, but tying knots in webbing can concentrate the force at the bends of the knot and reduce the breaking strain of the webbing ... however, don't believe some random on the internet (me) and check it out for yourselves
@@TeuluTribe Knots in tape can be ok, if you use the correct knot - there's really only one, called (not surprisingly) the tape knot or water knot. Best way I've seen of making safety lines is to get a sailmaker to sew loops on the ends once you've measured very carefully. These can then be girth hitched around a cleat at either end of the boat. For extra credit use nylon webbing, soak it before sewing the loop in the 'other' end, then sew it and put in place. As it dries the nylon will shrink and it will get tighter. Not really necessary though, and means you do have to wet the line to put it on or remove it. And you will want to remove them when not needed, they will get sun affected. Obviously quite dependent on deck layout etc; none of this is actually my preferred way to run safety lines. But to Oom Wat's original point, yes, don't trust regular knots in flat webbing.

With a week at sea under your belt, life must be feeling pretty good. The one thing i would remind you of is: The nearest bit of land is usually under your boat. Have a wonderful time and always remember, you have already exceeded most peoples dreams, so you have nothing to prove, its your adventure no one elses.
I know it's far too late, but those bulkhead fitting on the water tanks really don't need silicone. In 15 years I've only ever just relied on the included gasket
One thing you definitely need in your first aid boat kit is 2-Octyl cyanoacrylate like "Dermabond Pen" its impossible to suture a deep wound on a moving boat.

Go bag needs a big bottle of sunscreen. Also, tins of peaches etc. are no good without a tin opener. I'd not have them in a go bag as if they rust or leak all else would be ruined.Stick to MREs and power bars. Same reason I'd have the water separate. Perhaps in a smaller bag tied on.
For the grab bag: Waxed dental floss makes great sewing repair jobs. Already water proof and strong. I have mended many a jacket with this up in Alaska. I even had a surgical sewing kit, but at least get one small upholstery curved needle. That, too, comes in handy. A few cheap hats and sunglasses. I would even go as far as getting silly sunglasses to lighten the mood. Small 8x40 binoculars. If room, a small sea anchor to help stabilize the raft, or something to drag behind the raft with line to help in heavy seas and wind. Small sea anchors are cheap and easy to stow and come with line handy for other things. But the binoculars are handy, being able to see distances when floating in a raft, which we hope won't be necessary, is a plus. Anyway, looks like you got a smart list there.
Make sure you write notes with waterproof pen. I've known a young woman that travelled the world for years on end en had a notebook full of addresses. One day she left it outside on a bench. That night it rained ...

Another great video, once again great to see you rolling your sleeves up and doing the work yourselves. This is important as you get to know your boat and will be able to fix it when things go wrong. One thing that worked for us over the years was to have a small plastic box for everyday first aid items such as plasters, spray plaster (great stuff) pain killers etc saves to searching through the big kit for minor injuries.
For your safety lines, tie a thumb knot before the hard point, pass through the hard point then feed the tail back through the thumb knot following it's self. Much stronger and tidier.

Someone may have mentioned this, but fresh water is less dense than saltwater, so a couple of jerry cans of drinking water can also be thrown overboard with the life raft and grab bag, if the unthinkable happens, and gives you an extra supply of drinking water in addition to the relatively small amount in the bag.
Please, just work up to long voyages. Build your confidence first so you know what you can do and can be confident in what your boat can handel. Gods speed and fair winds always!
With storing your whisker pole on the deck, just make sure you move it regularly and clean underneath it / let it dry out. I’ve learned this the hard way and now have stains on my GRP deck that I can’t shift :)
To make your safety line work better keep it folded in half but attach it to your harness with a cow hitch in the middle. That way you have 2 clips to work with, you can then stay clipped on when you move between sections on your orange line.
It’s never “goodbye “ it’s till I see you again. Fair weather and following seas. I look forward to watching your adventure and living vicariously through that.
For your safety lines - I would add a (locking) carabiner to the loop clipping that onto the jack line. because of the potential chafing as you move back and forth.
@@TeuluTribe there are a variety of locking carabiners out there. If there is a store catering to climbers go by there. The commonality is that no locking carabiner will open from a strike to the gate. I would suggest picking on you personally can open single handed to ensure you have the second hand available to grab something. If you have spots where you change from one section to another than get two so you can ALWAYS be clipped onto that line.

Well if not got a water maker there are some Portable ones but make sure they are powerful enough and have slandered top water filtering that changes fully from Salt water in to fresh water. A lot of small and even large Yachts use portable ones I think because when getting old it is simple to change for a new modern one and no reliant on through holes. have money easy to get to in case need it or pirates. and Have only expendable gadgets on show Bank details easy to access in memory or a person at home family friend to keep in emergency. Water proof bag to seal documents in Passport and other as another water proof bag for phones cameras small electrical items.

Bit late as you have done it, but putting fittings on the bottom of a water tank means if it leaks you have to figure out how to empty it. Better the fitting is on top with a bit of hose to draw from the bottom of the tank. You will also need a vent line or it can blow up the tank as you try and fill.

Aww bloody loved that video , and you know I am going to mention in to the small space he had to climb he always looks so small , I don’t ever give advice but it came to my mind if you had a little 12 v caravan water pump you could drop it into the blue barrels and move it to the main tank with ease no pouring no funnels reich I used fabulous 22 litres in a min 😊I so hope I meet you both one day regards Paul 😊
I’ve noticed from watching other TH-cam channels you need to remove the paper labels from your canned food and use marker to write on the cans. I believe that some kind of bug will eat the paper labels if they are left on.
Just noticed the Jack Lines dilemma in doubling it up you are compromising the safety line a better way is to double it up and put a Climbers Carbineer in the loop thus shortening the length and keeping the safety lines intended strength as in time you will experience chaffing between the two materials where as the carbineer will keep that intact just a thought Craig

Instead of drilling into the plastic water tanks...heat some 3/4 inch copper pipe and burn it through...seals and no plastic swarf into the tank. :D Years as a plumber with header tank fittings...quick and so much easier.

Get a sewing awl and look up webbing sewing patterns it's really easy 👌

Not sure if you have included, syringes, needles and iv's. Boots do a good kit with these so you won't be worried about second hand needles.

Well if not got a water maker there are some Portable ones but make sure they are powerful enough and have slandered top water filtering that changes fully from Salt water in to fresh water. A lot of small and even large Yachts use portable ones I think because when getting old it is simple to change for a new modern one and no reliant on through holes. have money easy to get to in case need it or pirates. and Have only expendable gadgets on show Bank details easy to access in memory or a person at home family friend to keep in emergency. Water proof bag to seal documents in Passport and other as another water proof bag for phones cameras small electrical items.

Water tank pick-up should be on the top with a tube to go to the bottom. No holes below the top. Don't forget an overflow.

Bit late as you have done it, but putting fittings on the bottom of a water tank means if it leaks you have to figure out how to empty it. Better the fitting is on top with a bit of hose to draw from the bottom of the tank. You will also need a vent line or it can blow up the tank as you try and fill.
The bottom fitting is on the side of the tank for this reason 😊 and the breather tube is through the other tank 😊

Aww bloody loved that video , and you know I am going to mention in to the small space he had to climb he always looks so small , I don’t ever give advice but it came to my mind if you had a little 12 v caravan water pump you could drop it into the blue barrels and move it to the main tank with ease no pouring no funnels reich I used fabulous 22 litres in a min 😊I so hope I meet you both one day regards Paul 😊

I’ve noticed from watching other TH-cam channels you need to remove the paper labels from your canned food and use marker to write on the cans. I believe that some kind of bug will eat the paper labels if they are left on.

Just noticed the Jack Lines dilemma in doubling it up you are compromising the safety line a better way is to double it up and put a Climbers Carbineer in the loop thus shortening the length and keeping the safety lines intended strength as in time you will experience chaffing between the two materials where as the carbineer will keep that intact just a thought Craig

Instead of drilling into the plastic water tanks...heat some 3/4 inch copper pipe and burn it through...seals and no plastic swarf into the tank. :D Years as a plumber with header tank fittings...quick and so much easier.
