The most exciting high note of any baritone--you might swear it was a tenor, but then it descends seamlessly into burnished oak baritone--just wow.

This is the most beautiful Prologue for I Pagliacci I have ever heard. The high notes are splendid. The whole voice is a wonderful piece of jewelry.

One of the best dark timbre big voiced voices along with Merrill, MacNeil, & Bastianini to handle the Verdi roles after Warren died. Herlea had an exciting sound but was hardly a subtle interpreter in recordings I have heard. For example Rodrigo’s death scene heard on a mid 1960s MET broadcast shows no character to speak of but is still thrilling to hear up to a point. The late Paul Jackson in his second MET broadcast chronicle goes into some detail concerning this. Sometimes I enjoy returning to Herlea’s vocal color which resembles Bastianini in powerful sonority but only in short allotments.

Interesting, balanced perspective! You must be referring to the broadcast with Rysanek and Corelli. I need to revisit that.

He made aa other recording, almost identical, ao probably another take. The only difference is he holds the high note a bit longer, but ends it with a quick short " voi" ( rather then VOOO EEEE like here. I dont k ow why i wasnt worshipping this man while he was actice. Its a very " tight"voice, bel canto, with a quick vibrato. 8n ways the opposite of Warren ( and occasionally Merrill) who could sound overly loose and blowseyl, especially Warren. Its nice to heard a more refined, less prize fighter approach to this music

Yes indeed, one of the most exciting high notes of a TENOR. One of the so many tenors that learned how to fake a baritone voice. Now, I think that his voice is beautiful and his line and style is superb. And he made a wonderful carrier as a baritone. Good for him that knew how to adapt well to his problems as a tenor. I admire him and listen to him very often.

    • @MioaraTraila

I do not agree. He was a baritone all his life, with excellent tenor abilities. Never faked his baritone voice. I saw him live, in extraordinary performaces on the stage, as a very convincing Rigoletto, or Figaro. Powerful, ample voice.

If you heard him in the theater and he sounded as you said, perhaps I was wrong in my appreciation. I never heard him in person. I had this recording from many years ago. Obviously, he sounded great! I would have loved to have heard him in person.@@MioaraTraila

:)) faked his voice?! Funny. He was one of the best baritones in history, if not the best. Just that he was behind the iron curtain and he was a very modest person which absolutely never tried to get on top of other singers. An authentic great artist which didn't come from nowhere. He learnt from amazing singers which were were some of the best canto teachers in the world. His class colleagues were amongst the greatest, too.

the timbre and the where the passaggi lie in his vocal range are that of a baritone. Just has a crazy high extension. Like Cappuccilli.

    • @somerandomguy84

Agreed, @benjamin. A lot of times voices with so much natural/genetic head dominance have unfairly easy high notes. Warren, Herlea, Cap, Murzaev had very easy access to the top notes that were even better than many tenors but they were all baritones.

@jamesaldabo7767 yes it is a ridiculous comment. Herlea's was one of the MOST natural baritones ever. He was born with this voice. And what a voice! The vibrato is free and constant, he flips up to the high note beautifully. Does it sound tenorish? Sure. Its in the tenor territory, but to artificially add weight to it would be unnatural. I cant imagine that note being sung any better. Fantastic. Goose bumps. Check out his Rigoletto with Zeani.

Monsieur. Herlea.
      Avec mes salutations lyriques.
