Maestru Herlea ne inalta in Universul Divin al Muzicii Celeste! Impecabila tehnica si forta vocala, ambitus deosebit, armonie si frumusete extraordinara a timbrului, maiestrita frazare, lejeritare si inteligenta interpretativa...
Unluckily Nicolae Herlea shared the sad fate of many other great opera artists who were born behind Communist Iron Red Curtin. In the 1950/60-ties, they were very rarely invited to perform on western stages. But I know how to find real talents like him or Russian/Azerbaijani Muslim Magomayev and Bulgarian tenor Nikola Nikolov. What western media and newspapers were trying to suggest, I highly disregard. The choice of my mind and heart is all what counts.
This type of dark & luxurious Verdi baritone voice seems non-existent, or nearly so (?) these days. In Herlea‘s case was it a matter of special training & the time involved in such work that resulted in his wonderful sound? I would think so since it is hard to believe that the raw material in such an instrument cannot be developed under the RIIGHT CONDITIONS these days. An even greater upper extension in range is not the issue here. Warren had this & other qualities were what made him a great singer. Some like Milnes even in his best years capitalized on his high notes to the detriment of the rest of his voice (flatting in the upper E Natural to F became a chronic problem) but voices like Herlea & Bastianini, although lacking subtlety & bel canto finesse at times, would still be welcome with open arms these days.
@nisticom Hihi! Col diavolo in corpo.
Mamma mia!!! gigantesco!!!
Damn, he covers each note perfectly.
One of the great Verdi baritones, and quite possibly not sufficiently esteemed or even recalled today.
Inmenso cantante
How on earth did I miss this marvellous voice? This voice was designed for Verdi.

good voice
that voice is just terrifying
Would that he were here today to teach Hvorostovsky, Terfel, Hampson, Gavanelli, Alvarez, Leiferkus, Kwiecen et al how to sing!
@andigrim007
yeah, I do to, but it's scary as hell =P

@TheVerdiBaritone I think he is still alive and teaching. Not positive.
