After finishing up the installation of the first layer of decking in the forward cabin, I move into construction of the aft deck. Once again I'm changing the lines a little as I add some beveled shim stock to the deck beams to allow the shape to come together a bit easier.
This is this is the story of a complete boat owning and boat building novice and his family, constructing a 41’ full displacement trawler yacht in the backyard of their upstate New York home. While I consider myself a fairly advanced amateur woodworker and DIY guy, I’ve never owned a boat before and certainly have never built one either.
The naval architect, George Buehler, designed this boat, from his Diesel Duck line, with the home builder in mind. This design has been licensed for professional builders in China and Turkey, but George’s goal was always to make the large, blue water cruising boat within the reach of the average person.
His commitment to a design that was attainable for the average handy person, resulted in his first book, Buehlers Backyard Boat Building, detailing the process. His designs often include building materials and fasteners available at the big box home improvement stores.
George believed that a robust, comfortable and safe cruising boat could be built with less than ideal, traditional materials. While he acknowledge that less than ideal materials may limit the vessels longevity and resale value, his design would get people safely out on the water while the other guy remained landlocked saving for a design he would never be able to afford to build.
Many traditionalist scoff at his mostly hard chined designs and deviation from traditional methods and materials. However his maverick approach has made the dream of crossing oceans in a home built boat a reality for many around the world. No matter what the “experts” say, his designs have been proven over and over with literally hundreds of examples cruising the worlds oceans today.

    Hello.
In Denmark, you cannot buy saws that do not have safety screens installed, which protect fingers and hands.
If these are dismantled and the labor inspectorate comes, it will cost two fines, one for the worker and one for the boss.
Have you removed the safety guard yourself or is this how machines are sold in the USA. ?
But that is perhaps why there are apprentices. They can hold the screw because the person who has to screw is missing a couple of fingers.
Now use the security. It is made to protect the worker.

I don't know why but I've just noticed your wood stove, if memory serves your dust collection drops behind your shop. Do you have outside air for your draft and do you have any smoke problems when dc is on? Any info on DC with wood heat would be greatly appreciated. Thanks from Erie PA

Your build looks great and coming along nicely. I have a quick question about your earmuffs. Are you happy with them? I've been using cheap Harbor Freight earmuffs that are just too tight after wearing them about an hour (my head isn't that big either). I was wondering if your muffs have any adjustments for tightness since not everyone has the same size head? I am looking for blue tooth earmuffs as well. Thanks!

In your intro, you mention “crossing oceans”, I would highly recommend starting out crossing rivers, then work your way up to crossing bays either the Delaware or Chesapeake. After that and only after that have your vessel inspected by Lloyd’s or comparable. The alternative is you’ll be swallowed up by the Atlantic and they’ll write another sad song about your demise, sorry but I’ve spent my whole life on the water and have seen this scenario play out a hundred times, Cheers

How thickness the plywood on those side decks? It looked like 3/8" on my phone. That is an area that really needs to be strong. Because as you'll find out once launched, shit happens.

A fantastic project, thank you for sharing a wealth of shipbuilding details. Hipa provides DIYers with chainsaw accessories and consumables, and we have also set up a website to help DIYers find parts and consumables more easily, with very affordable prices. I recently sent you an email, and I wonder if you are interested in collaborating on a video project together to help more DIYers.
