Aye. And to think, I only saw it once. Just once, as a child. And yet I still remember it vividly. Perhaps not all the scenes. But the message? Without a doubt. To me, one if the film's greatest quote is "And thus, the tribes came to know the enldess mercy of The Lord, and the short lived mercy of Man".
It is so sad, I can never watch it again. I try but can’t get through it.
We are a flawed species.
There is no hope.
Such an underrated movie. I watched it with my grandmother as a child, and we were both sobbing like babies by the end of it. Absolutely beautiful.

WE NEED MORE MOVIES LIKE THESE! CGI is fine, BUT, the DEPTH OF THE STORY, THAT'S WHAT CAPTIVATES THE SOUL!

@@matelandjo8084 I am more optimistic. Hollywood will pendulum back to the idea of objective truth and claim they discovered the human spiritual condition. Although, the State could creep into full control of the craft.

Man, do I love those epics from the 80s. One of cinema's greatest periods. All today's CGI sequel-prequel-superhero rubbish that has its stars act in front of Green Screens is nothing compared to talented guys picking up a camera and walking right into the real djungle, into the Forbidden City, to India or to the beach at St Andrews. There is something so authentic about this that simply cannot be imitated.
I am so moved by this production to this day. The soundtrack, the story, the actors and their "Mission". This is the film that introduced me to Jeremy Irons, his warmth in character as the God loving Jesuit priest that is challenged in so many ways. The music is so uplifting and heavenly and the scenery of the location is breathtaking. Their acceptance by the Guarani Indians and the accomplishments together was as impressive as beautiful. This film is so moving it gives me an inner joy of what can be done when love and caring are involved, yet the sad truth of corruption and power seems to win at the end...or did it? Life, love and God will carry on. I consider "The Mission" one of the best films of my life...don't miss it!

Jeremy Irons' natural authory has always amazed me. When you watch "The Mission", you easily forget how young he still was when he made this (somewhere in his 30s).
Back when Hollywood still made great movies! - the one was something special!
It's a British movie, but I agree with you. I don't think the European film business is in any better shape.

@@washmabi As such, have not the US stopped making such movie for a coule of decades already? One that is actually in better shape is the Norwegian one though. And it was absolutely a dumpster fire back in the seventies, eighties and nineties.
처음 이영화를 극장에서 보던 날 흐르는 눈물을 감당할수가 없었다. 30년도 더 흘렀지만 아직도 이 OST를 들으면 가슴이 뜨겁고 뭉클해진다. 정말 위대한 작품이자 실화. 그들은 그렇게 영원히 우리 가슴에 남았다.
Robert De Niro needs to go back in his memories of when he starred in this film and what it really is about, because he's serving the contrary nowadays.
