  • Get ready for another action-packed episode of our Franna Crane Project! In Part 21, we're diving deep into prepping the front end of the crane. Watch as we blast away years of rust, coal dust and old paint using our Rapidblast dustless blasting system. Next, we'll use a carbon arc gouger to remove unnecessary parts like the stauff clamp mounts and hose brackets that we’ll no longer be needing. But that's not all! We’ll be giving the front end a complete fabrication makeover so we also need to gouge off the toolbox doors, top plate, and guards. To protect the bare metal, we also apply a coat of etch primer to prevent any rust. Stay tuned for more exciting updates as we continue to transform this crane!

Curious about why we're putting so much effort into this Franna crane?? 🤔We like to think of it as our 'passion project' we do it because we love it, not only that, it's our goal to create a fully restored, functional, and visually stunning piece of equipment that's not only a testament to Kurtis skills but also a valuable asset for our business. We hope you enjoy watching our progress and if you've got any questions drop them below in the comments and we'll do our best to answer them 😄👇

I love seeing how you're making it your own. All the modifications Kurtis has in mind and all the personality it'll have in the end. It may be a Franna crane, but it will dedinitely be YOUR Franna.

@@pacificcoastpiper3949 I've only worked with smaller machines, but in my experience the pain is negligible because all the energy went into the stripping. A simple overall is sufficient to stop any sensation. However, you never ever want to be at the business end of that spray nozzle. Pain would be the least of your issues, that is if you still have nerve endings left to allow you to feel pain.

But like a good friend of mine said "we have a box of parts and there is only one way to put it back together. If there is something left, we'll figure it out"
That was when the carburetor of my first car was in 50 or so pieces and I just came back from the bathroom. I expected to find neatly stacked rows of parts to be restored in order, I was horrified to find a container with random parts floating around in degreaser. Mind you this was 30 years ago and I was very much inexperienced with mechanical car parts. Now I do know what to do, but I just pay my mechanic at the garage because I don't have the time or space for such projects.
Kurtis has 20 or so boxes or parts and 20 odd videos to look back to for documentation. We are just here for the ride 🤣

Once you do something long enough, it just because second nature. I thought the same thing when I first showed an interest in becoming an automotive mechanic. Now, 35-ish years later and having become a professional mechanic, removing and engine from an engine bay isn't any big deal. I mean I'm no better than anyone else and I do have my own system of keeping track of things. But from the outside looking in I can definitely see how things seem chaotic. Plus I remember being astonished watching my mentors.
But I'm sure he has a system that helps him keep track. Back in my early days I used a lot of Tupperware, that's for sure!!

In this current culture of throwaway technology, it's very refreshing to see content where a good machine is restored so that it can continue to be productively used, and not just trashed. This sort of content has spurred me to try and repair something before just giving up on it - even if I do not yet possess the skill to do so. Of course, my humble repairs are on a much smaller scale :) Keep up the good work, K & K!

Neighbor went into nursing home sad but life. She had a 1999 es300 80k on clock garage queen. had a dead battery and no major timing belt servicing. It would fail inspection. And not saleable maybe 200 bucks at a used car lot they would they would bring to auction. The daughters asked do you want the car? Well i ended up getting it for 1 dollar. I already have 3 cars. Well i charged battery had timing belt serviced, ouch did brake fluid change new headlight bulbs etc, re condition leather seats, clay bar the car and wax cleaned seatbelts so now they retract. Cleaned plenium and cowel, cleaned engine, oil change next trans fluid change.cars runs fantastic passed emissions easily. Car runs great. It only needed 1400 for timing belt water pump full asian kit did seals too cams and crank. And a lot of my labor. Car is a blast to drive a real looker too. Why did i do it because the lady was very nice to me and loved her car. Now i love it too..only 80k on the clock she is a baby.. and well cared for. Like the sisters wanted, they knew i would care for the car. Now i car shuffle. Also for the challenge.. why not..

Kurtis's work ethic and thoroughness impress me. As an engineer previously responsible for a metals and alloys production plant, watching Kurtis take the time to properly secure the frame from any possibility of falling over during the painting, tells me he's the type of person who takes time to do it right. As with all his projects while I enjoy watching him do the work, it's the care and planning that go into them that impresses me most. He also typically discusses things that he would have done different if he did a project again. His customers are lucky to have access to such a great shop for getting repairs done the right way.

I'm a Retired Mechanical Engineer and I'm also a Machinist (although nothing close to Kurtis's level). I'm also an all-around "gear-head" and car enthusiast. As soon as he said he was going to "customize" the crane my ears pricked up! I can't wait to see how this beast turns out! Probably one of the few (or only) show-car quality cranes on the planet! Considering he's basically going to "re-engineer" the thing to his liking it's gonna be EPIC!

I worked on a dairy farm for the first 5 years of my working life, among duties I did the pressure washing of the cattle bedding areas, cubicle houses etc, after winter, this was a task that took weeks and I often had to hose myself down after each day, not only was I soaked and filthy but of course you can imagine the smell!
Often the bus driver would refuse to let me board to come home so I had to walk about 5 miles straight over fields ( to have walked the bus route would have been no less than 10 miles).
    I remember it well!
Great to see work resume on this project, it’s gonna look fantastic when it’s finished! I just know it will!

I love the franna crane series ive always been into restoration restored a few cars in my life so to see this series of restoring what some would say is scrap is fantastic we live in a society where they throw away everthing but there is a few of us who repair things not because we are tight money wise its because there is fun in repairing something or restoring something and a huge sense of achievement of you can do it thanks for sharing kurtis all the best from london uk god bless

I just spent a couple of hours Water-pressure washing my garage and driveway after the *_Great Flood of Chiang Mai_* (October '24), so I know the satisfaction Kurtis felt using his sand blaster 😂

ahhhh great video. More work on the crane this week, Bonus!. Cracked me up when you paused & showed off the mess involved & that you was covered head to toe with water & sand from all the effort. Done that many a time when i get my pressure washer out thinking to myself "Ahh i'll be ok i dont need waterproof's" then an hour later i'm drenched. Can't wait to see the final result now you have added a twist to the builds by cutting those mud guards off (i'd forgot you are having to build a new cab". Anyway until next week, Have a good week, Don't work to hard m8.

Just so satisfying watching Kurtis paint stripping and cleaning things down to bare steel with the awesome setup. Man, those high frequencies of compressed air and water "esses" is so piercing. I hope ear protection for your both is at maximum! Thanks Karen for getting the turbine helo lifting off. As an aviator I look for it parked there every week, and always hear aircraft engines and propellors flying overhead!

I agree with you when you say, you want to do it that way because it's your project is yours and that's the way you want it.. Don't let anyone change that. Just like everything else I've seen you do I know it's going to be something great. Make it your crane, I'm sure we are not going to be disappointed with the out come. Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more very soon.

Always count down to the 3am EST time for the next episode, then rushing to hit the thumbs up ASAP.....have it down now, consistently within the 1st 250 thumbs up, and that with only 3-4 seconds of the episode.....faithful to the very end of every single production..keep it up Karen and Kurtis...outstanding as always.

Top 3 things i love about this video:
    1) all those L cuts of the tool audio under the fast forwarded parts that just line up perfectly. 👌
    2) Kurtis talking through his safety considerations. 🏗️
    3) feeling like we got to see this stage of the project 'done' once all the primer was on. 🖌️
